A Day in the Life of Barbara Logan

Marketing Director Barbara Logan is one of the most organized people I've met and/or worked with—ever. Being someone who thrives in a certain amount of chaos, I looked forward to getting an inside peek at her daily routine here in the office.

What is the first thing you do when you get into the office each morning?
Each night before I leave I print my list of to-dos for the following day. It's one of my favorite iCal features. Sometimes I even rank them in order so that they will prompt me in the morning. So when I arrive each morning I get a glass of water, get a handle on my inbox and then take a look at my list to see where to focus my attention first.

What communications medium helps you the most during the day? (IM, email, the phone)
All three! I like the instant help I can get from IM when I might be on a call and need a quick answer from someone. But I like email for the record it creates. I have a LOT of email folders and subfolders that I constantly refer to.

How do you divide your time each day between projects?
I try to work through things in order of their urgency. The flow of work generally sets how I divide my time, although I am usually jumping from one thing to another all day. I don't mind though—it definitely keeps things interesting and makes the time fly by.

What three software programs do you use every day and could not live without?
I use some of the basics everyday like Excel and Word, which while functional, aren't that exciting. On the other hand, while I don't rely on them every day, Keynote and Skitch are must-haves for me when working on presentations or with images.

What is your favorite non-electrical tool you use for work?
Post-it notes because I really like lists.

Thanks, Barbara! I'm going to go check out these "to-do lists" that you speak of...

According to The New York Times, it seems that the newspaper’s last typographical face-lift was in 2003, but it wasn’t until last night that I noticed that they use at least four different fonts on their front page. They cap some, but not others. Some run ragged while others are left-aligned. I’m not sure what made me notice it now, but I’ll never look at their front page the same way again. Perhaps this is an example of how when print design is truly successful, the reader doesn’t even notice. And maybe that’s the whole point.

Getting into the Holiday Spirit

Everyone has different ways and traditions to help them get into the spirit of the season. For some it's decorating their Christmas tree, hanging their wreath on their front door, watching It's a Wonderful Life or baking their family holiday cookie recipe.

This year, in an attempt to get into the holiday spirit, I went to see a performance of David Sedaris' The Santaland Diaries. I know, most of you are probably thinking David Sedaris is not the person to help you get into the festive spirit, but I have to disagree with you there.

I'm a big David Sedaris fan. When I first read Me Talk Pretty One Day, I laughed harder reading a book than I ever had. His work is wonderful and brilliant, and having the opportunity to see him read his work in person is magical. His observations of human behavior are uncanny and I find him hugely entertaining.

Last year, I spent most of the week of Christmas in the car -- I traveled over a 1,000 miles. A friend of mine who is an avid reader and knows of my fondness for Sedaris gave me The Santaland Diaries on CD. What a perfect gift! I was in stitches for hours in the car, listening to his adventures from working as an elf at Macy's.

This all explains why, when a friend invited me to see The Tennessee Repertory Theatre's performance of The Santaland Diaries, I jumped at the chance. So last week I barreled in the car with some girlfriends and headed downtown for some laughs. We had a great time, but I have to admit that during the show all I could do was to think of how I wished I had be watching, or at least listening to, David Sedaris himself. Regardless, the night was really fun and definitely helped me get into the holiday spirit. Granted, some might opt for more traditional fare, like driving around the neighborhood looking at lights or watching A Charlie Brown Christmas (I do love that too), but hearing stories about overzealous parents, poorly behaved children and adults working as professional elves leaves me full of the spirit of the season and a smile on my face.
