I REALIZE THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HAMTON NH IN GENERAL AND YET IT APPLIES EVERYWHERE I GUESS Why is it that when bosses complain about poor performers, they're never talking about themselves?
Too often, managers attribute all their woes to their lackluster underlings or the mistreatment they receive from their own supervisors. Many are unwilling or unable to even consider the possibility that they themselves might just be the problems that plague morale and performance. Managers with this type of attitude contribute to an illness that undermines many businesses Â bad boss syndrome, or BBS.
BBS is a two-way street that can infect a business at every level: It can affect employees who are burdened by unappreciative managers who stifle their creativity and hamper their growth within the company. And it can also refer to the manager who's a terrible boss.
Unappreciative bosses are the pits. They often believe that if you do the job you were hired for, then you aren't entitled to praise or gratitude from them. It would never occur to them to say thanks or show their appreciation for your efforts. After all, you get a paycheck for that, so why should you deserve more?
I agree that employees shouldn't expect back-patting 24/7, but I strongly disagree with the philosophy of managers who don't offer frequent feedback and praise. Study after study confirms that workers are more committed to their jobs and are more productive when they know that management appreciates their efforts. In fact, the majority of people quit their bosses, not their jobs, when they opt to leave their positions.
Employees Should Communicate Their Needs
While the onus shouldn't be on the individual to beg for praise, as an employee you can try to retrain your boss to deliver the positive reinforcement you seek. For example, explain that such communication motivates you to deliver your very best work. Ask directly for constructive feedback, not just critical reaction, to your efforts. Ask directly for feedback on what you're doing right.
As a manager, ask yourself if you treat your direct reports the same way you expect your manager to treat you.
Recognize good work. When your people put in long hours or contribute great ideas, acknowledge them. This can come in many forms Â verbal credit in front of the group, an e-mail thanking an employee for a job well done, and even a spot bonus that says, "We really appreciate you."
The most basic form of appreciation is perhaps the easiest: Say "thank you." Those two words aren't spoken enough around the office. Managers are quick to complain when something goes wrong, but at the end of the day they're not willing to say thanks for putting in an honest day's work. Try it. Saying thank you Â and meaning it Â pays dividends in any workplace.

I have been out and about this last week so I haven't had a chance to update the site. Above is a picture of the Conway Scenic Railroad as it winds through a gorge and over an old wooden tressle. This is definately something to try when you have the time to do so.

The race to the Holidays is on! Withe Thanksgiving just a few days away and Christmas and New Years right around the corner it's a busy time of year for everyone. We need a big January and February Holiday to keep up the momentum to get us to Spring without the winter blues setting in.

I said the other day I was going too a secret place in Rowley. I did not get there this week. I got distracted by the thought of a big breakfast. For that I chose Nancy's right across the street from AMD Subaru on route one in Rye. I used the cow pictures because everything in Nancy's is cow related. Pictures, curtains, wallpaper, COWS! They have a large breakfast menu with several daily specials as well as an early bird special. The one that keeps bringing me back is her "roast beef has and eggs" It's home made and fantastic! They also have soups and sanwiches for lunch but feature breakfast all day. there are two dining rooms one in front and the other in the rear with a breakfast bar with plenty of room. Give it a try!

WILDCAT SKI AREA OPEN? FROM HAMPTON NH

This is Crazy! The earliest opening at Wildcat ski area in 50 years! They opened yesterday with about four feet of snow on all the trails! This must be like Christmas for all You snow lovers. For me it's like a cruel reminder that we have six months of this cold stuff. Wildcat is located in Pinkham Notch NH just head up route 16 through North Conway.

Well most people are still thinking about Halloween not playing in the snow. Don't forget to turn your clocks back before you go to bed tonight.

I was told about a restaurant in Rowley Ma that I'm going to check out on Monday It's suppose to be a hidden jewel I'll let you know.

The Old Salt Restaurant had it's annual Halloween party yesterday. We went over early for the early bird specials. They seemed to have quite a good turn out for the kids.

By the way if the early bird special is very good just 10.99 you get soup or chowder a main course plus dessert . Good deal Give it a try from 3pm -5pm plus it's not crowded and there is no wait.

Watch for the expansion at RonJillian's restaurant on route one in Hampton! They should be ready to open the new dining room in about two weeks. They also have partnered with Ramano's cafe in North Hampton. From that location they will be serving their famous Brick oven pizza.

Well it looks like a possible stormy weekend thanks to the latest hurricane brewing down south. Today is suppose to be in the mid 70's so get out and enjoy it!

HALLOWEEN SAFETY FROM HAMPTON NH

Well we're getting close to Halloween so I thought I'd put in some basic safety tips early. So here are some good ideas to keep in mind.

Know the route your kids will be taking if you aren't going with them.

The best bet is to make sure that an adult is going with them. If you can't take them, see if another parent or a teen aged sibling can go along.

Know what other activities a child may be attending, such as parties, school or mall functions.
Make sure you set a time that they should be home by. Make sure they know how important it is for them to be home on time.

Explain to children the difference between tricks and vandalism. Throwing eggs at a house may seem like fun but they need to know the other side of the coin as well, clean up and damages can ruin Halloween. If they are caught vandalizing, make them clean up the mess they've made.
Explain to your kids that animal cruelty is not acceptable. Kids may know this on their own but peer pressure can be a bad thing. Make sure that they know that harming animals is not only morally wrong but punishable by law and will not be tolerated.

Sometimes adults need more watching at their partys! If you have an adult party make sure to keep an eye on the drinking.

HIGHER ELECTRIC CHARGES FROM HAMPTON NH

Something none of us want to here is higher utility costs but that's exactly what Unitil and the other companies are telling us. When the current contract is up in January we will be digging deeper to pay those bills. I heat with natural gas and can expect a 50% increase over last year.

So please send your donations too.... only kidding.

The rain continues maybe some sunshine this weekend. Check out the Independant film festivals weekend schedule of events for some good in door activities. Also there are a few good films out now and more coming this weekend check your local listings. I still haven't seen "FLIGHTPLAN" with Jodie Foster. I think I'll do that on Monday when it's a little quieter at the movies.

Where is the foliage? Although it is coming in up north here in the Seacoast area the trees still think it's summer! The warm days which lasted right through last week fooled them. Now that we have had all this cool weather and rain we should start to see a little more color in the next couple weeks. That is if we don't get another strong storm that knocks all the leaves off the trees! Above is a picture of Keene NH in better times. The flooding of this week and the threat of more on the way Has got to be hard on the residents of the South West corner of our state. I hope they still hold their annual pumpkin contest. By the way if you would like to donate to the relief fund contact the American Red Cross. Make sure you specify where you want the money to go.

TOPSFIELD FAIR FROM HAMPTON NH

The Topsfield Faire is underway on Route one in Topsfield Ma. The Fair will run through October 10th. Thsi is the oldest Agricultural Fair in the country. You'll find plenty of animals, rides, demonstrations and of course junk food! The Fair is open daily at 10:00am. The traffic can be pretty heavy so I would suggest going in the morning if possible.

There are many reasons I'm glad to be in New Hampshire. The lack of crime and corruption is part of that reason. As bad as we all feel for the people of the Gulf coast region I can't help adding this article from the New York Times to the site today as food for thought. So here it is.

The New York Daily News, Sept. 4, 2005 Louisiana .... (Excerpted)

In the late 1990s, the state's school systems ranked dead last in
the nation in the number of computers per student (1 per 88), and
Louisiana has the nation's second-highest percentage of adults
who never finished high school. By the state's own measure, 47%
of the public schools in New Orleans rank as "academically
unacceptable."

These government failures are not merely a matter of incompetence.
Louisiana and New Orleans have a long, well-known reputation for
corruption: as former congressman Billy Tauzin once put it, "half
of Louisiana is under water and the other half is under indictment."

That's putting it mildly. Adjusted for population size, the state ranks
third in the number of elected officials convicted of crimes
(Mississippi is No. 1). Recent scandals include the conviction of 14
state judges and an FBI raid on the business and personal files of
a Louisiana congressman.

In 1991, a notoriously corrupt Democrat named Edwin Edwards ran
for governor against Republican David Duke, a former head of the Ku
Klux Klan. Edwards, whose winning campaign included bumper
stickers saying "Elect the Crook," is currently serving a 10-year
prison sentence for taking bribes from casino owners. Duke recently
completed his own prison term for tax fraud.

The rot included the New Orleans Police Department, which in the 1990s had the dubious distinction of being the nation's most corrupt
police force and the least effective: the city had the highest murder
rate in America. More than 50 officers were eventually convicted of
crimes including murder, rape and robbery; two are currently on
Death Row.

Ten billion dollars are about to pass into the sticky hands of
politicians in the No. 1 and No. 3 most corrupt states in America.

DEERFIELD FAIR BEGINS TODAY FROM HAMPTON NH

"The Sport of Horsepulling"
In the early 1900's when farmers farmed with horses, can't you just visualize a farmer telling his neighbor. "I bet my horse can pull more than yours can". Then to prove it, the neighbor would take him up on that bet and soon there would be some competition between several farmers.
Horsepulling has come quite far from the early 1900's. Although the Amish use horses to do their field work, those horses who labor on the farm for many hours a day usually don't end up in the Pulling Arena on the week-end. The few farmers that use their pulling stock to haul manure, mow hay or cut hay, do not do this on a consistent basis.
So, the Sport of Horsepulling is exactly THAT. It is a sport with a team of equine athletes. The work that goes into them to get ready for competition is endless.

You'll see plenty of horsepulling at the Deerfield Fair today through October 2nd.

I believe the Deerfield Fair to be the closet we have in this area to a real old fashioned New England fair. The weather might not be the greatest for today but give it a try. Your suppose to get wet and muddy at fair anyway.

The weather looks great for today. Yesterday I took a ride by Applecrest Orchards and there were many people out picking apples and all the vegetable stands were filled with all local vegetables so get out and explore the back roads.
