Wow, has it been that long since my last post? Summer is looming large (I love this time of year), so now I have some time to pick up where I left off.

And what better topic to get back into the swing of things with than one involving filmmaking, Maui, and kids?

Malia Cahill, an energetic young woman who's passionate about all things environmental and who obviously has a way with kids, is the mastermind and force behind the dynamic Maui Huliau Foundation.

I'll let the link do the talking:

Huliau Youth Environmental Film Festival

So, what am I going to be doing tonight? You guessed it -- I'll be at the I'ao Theater enjoying this film extravaganza ... Hope to see you there!

"Hmmmm, 3 years -- that's 3 minutes per year!" my better half noted with an ear-to-ear grin. He of course was being facetious and knew what it had taken to get to this point: the crashed hard drive being the most memorable delay, not to mention the flexible deadline that got the best of me. It was only this summer that I made the decision to finish the darn thing already.

Not that I didn't have a grand time documenting the goings-on at school. And I honed my sports filming skills, practiced my ninja moves around the perimeter of classrooms, and learned how to make people feel more comfortable about being interviewed. And, my Seabury footage library is now bulging, begging to be used in other projects.

The song picked for the video has a story of its own:

"Rainbow Ridge" is from Jeff Peterson's album Maui on My Mind. Jeff grew up in Olinda, and is a true Maui son. The title is very appropriate, given the multitude of rainbows we are blessed to witness in upcountry Maui, and Rainbow Ridge itself is just across the way from campus.

Here's what Jeff says about the song, on his official website:

"Rainbow Ridge: Rainbow Ridge was the nickname of the place where Jimi Hendrix gave his final concert in 1970. It is at the edge of the pasture where my ´ohana lives on Maui. It was called Rainbow Bridge in the film of the concert and Jimi’s Maui visit. I wasn’t born yet, but I have heard all about what a great party it was! This song is for Jimi."

The song's fabulous slack-key riffs and its lively beat were perfect for the script. But it was the upcountry Maui connection that made the song the only one.

The video is now public, on YouTube and AKAKU. And it will soon be embedded on the school's website, for prospective students to enjoy.

I'm proudest of the fact that the video is an accurate portrayal of our school. It took 3 years to bring the video to fruition, and 32 years of being a part of the Seabury community to make it real.

Two fantastic journeys ...

It's not because I haven't been doing anything constructive :D. Most of my postings have been on my Facebook page www.facebook.com/hanahoudigital.

Here's what I've been doing:

•Just finished the Seabury admissions video which will be available online and on AKAKU by the end of the month.

•Busy gathering resources for an amazing personal story about an Italian immigrant family, specifically, the Mama.

•Finished documenting the Meadow Gold Milk Carton Boat Regatta held at Hanakao'o Beach in April. To be shown on AKAKU soon.

•Crash-edited a school event video (Orientation Day) on a weekend, proving to myself that I can indeed speed it up it I need to.

•Just filmed and edited a hula number ("Mele Ohana" by Keali'i Reichel) for a wedding, for the bride-to-be to practice.

Life is good.

(◕‿◕✿)

Just did a "Mahina`O Hoku" practice DVD for my hula class. It can be played at any time, for finessing moves & refreshing one's memory after the big performance. Written by Lillian Awa, the song is sung & played by my Kumu, and danced by his two lovely assistants, w/ words on the screen.

I filmed the dance w/ my wee camera, on the fly. If I were to do it for the business, I would use my big camera & perhaps add features like foot & hand tutorials.

And an outside Maui No Ka Oi background would be the crowning touch.

This is something anyone can do. And in the hula arena, documenting the important work of the various kumu for succeeding generations is priceless.

This is a glimpse at the history of pa'u riding in Hawaii, as well as an introduction to five Maui pa'u riders who ride in the King Kamehameha Day parade in June. They will be featured in a longer, in-depth documentary.
Music by Jeff Peterson.
Video funded by the County of Maui - Office of Economic Development.
So once again, I've made a 180 degree turn, this time dropping my family biopic (just for a week, mind you) to work on a trailer. After all, I've been incubating this Pa'u documentary for almost four years now, long enough to make people wonder if I had bailed.

No, I have not bailed.

Pa'u to the front burner and turn up the heat, Biopic to the back burner to simmer. (Just for a week, mind you.)

Such is the life of a works-in-progress juggler -- love it!

P. S. Co-presenting will be Al Lagunero, on Pa'u history.
Here's their teaser (a 3-minute bellyful of laughs in an upcountry Maui pasture) for tonight's short-film festival :

Meet the Filmmakers for tonight, and Get Your Tickets Online, or pay at the door -- a paltry $5.00 for an evening of film entertainment. There'll be two showings: 5:00 pm and 7:30 pm.

Enjoy!
I was ready!

And, yes, the interview DID go pretty much as planned.

But one of the reasons I love doing bios is discovering information about a person not previously known by his/her family. And it happened again today. It felt like Jack had LEAPT out of his box -- I couldn't help but giggle.

This feeling of delight is what got me hooked on doing video documentaries in the first place. In 2005, I interviewed a certain frail elderly woman who, it turns out, was an expert jitterbug dancer, back in the day. Dancers would clear the floor to make room for her and her partner -- she was that good. The woman's children had no clue about this swinging side of her and when they saw the video, their jaws dropped.

Discovering previously undisclosed information to add to a family's already rich history? Priceless.

These are my first two pieces.

In the works: soccer and basketball.

It's fun to create these short action "highlights" pieces!

The footage that may or may not be included in the finished admissions video will only be a few seconds long. These shorts make it possible for people to enjoy what otherwise would be on the cutting floor, right away.

Here's a snippet from "Seabury Hall: The First Years", with vintage footage.

Seabury has a very interesting history, and I was happy to be chosen to do the series.

The First Years is a 12-minute short that's informative, engaging, and funny. I make it a point to ferret out the humor that's hiding under the facts. It's the crowning touch that makes a piece memorable, I think.

The digital film projects I choose to work on are just plain fun!

After the interviewing and gathering is mostly done, the editing begins. This is my favorite part! I can spend hours on a project, coming up only every so often for a bite to eat or a chore that must be taken care of NOW.

Maui is rich with stories to tell. I'll be working/playing to tell a few of them!
