ABC launched a new drama called “Defying Gravity” as part of their summer lineup. The show follows the activities of a team of astronauts on their mission around the solar system.

As soon as I heard about Defying Gravity, I was intrigued by the show’s title. The word “gravity” can be taken in a couple different ways. Gravity can refer to the force that holds us on the surface of Earth. In this case, the title of this show speaks of being unaffected or overcoming gravity by flying, which makes sense because this is a show about astronauts. They fly. Nothing earth-shattering about that.

There is another lens through which we can look at this show’s title. Gravity can also indicate a serious and solemn feeling. With this meaning in mind, the title of the show takes on a new, deeper dimension. Here, Defying Gravity implies resisting or withstanding feelings or situations that are serious and solemn. It’s quite apparent that the astronauts are going to encounter a number of serious, even life-threatening situations throughout their journey. The show’s title implies that they will actively defy their gravity.

Even though our worries here on Earth might not be as severe as those of an astronaut in a spaceship 4 million miles away, we all experience serious and solemn feelings from time to time. Ask yourself this: “What can I do to defy gravity in my life?”

4 Steps to Defy Your Gravity:

Define your Gravity. What is it that is holding you down? Fully defining the grave situations in your life can help illuminate various potential solutions.

Fuel up. Get the tools, resources and help that you need to overcome your gravity. There is always a “right tool for the right job.” Having the best resources that you can obtain always benefits the efficiency of the task at hand.

Launch. You will never get anywhere if you don’t take that first step. Although it might be daunting at first, with each step you take, moving in the right direction gets easier and easier.

Control your Mission. Any sort of life-change you try to make is most likely going to have some type of obstacles. These obstacles can knock you off course. Continuously check to make sure you are on the right track.

Surprise. Surprise. I am starting to blog for the third time in about two years. I am hoping that I can keep motivated to write at least something on a weekly basis.

This time, things should be different. Why? Because I have actually planned topics to write about:

“Random” – If you have lived on Earth for more than 2 days, you have undoubtedly experienced the randomness of this game we call life. Everyone experiences random thoughts, adventures and encounters. I want to chronicle my journey.

“Deep” – Whether it’s lyrics from a song that shake one to the core or a simple quote that touches a universal archetype, as humans we all feel emotionally touched from time to time. I’m not going to pretend to be some philosophical guru, or claim to be supernaturally enlightened. I hope that by simply writing down some of my deeper thoughts, I will be able to better process them myself. Hopefully, you gain something from these musings as well.

“Technology” – I sit in front of a computer at least 50 hours per week. The rest of the time I carry around a mini-computer (iPhone) in my pocket. I don’t want technology to be the overwhelming or defining aspect of my life. However, I am surrounded day and night by all sorts of tech… and I happen to like it a lot. Hopefully I can convey not only the coolness factor of technology, but also how various technologies can help improve the quality of life.

“Science” - Science is fascinating. If you don’t agree with that statement, you are a boring person. Okay, maybe that was a little harsh… But seriously. There are some very interesting and exciting scientific advances happening every day! I want to share or at least link to some of my favorites.

If any of these four topics sounded remotely interesting to you, I invite you to subscribe to my blog posts here, or follow me on Twitter. Hopefully there will be some intelligence to my scribblings… you can be the judge.
