He'd visited my old store, Painted Board Studio, several years ago and tracked me down. He wants his table to resemble one that I'd painted back then. Luckily I keep most pictures on my Iphone and was able to find it.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The table he was referring to was given to me by a friend who lives in a rehabbed old convent. The table was a library table. Very heavy with a solid laminated top.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Funny thing is, after I painted the table my friend ended up loving it and and bought it back! </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So back to Jim's table. It's Oak. It's nice. It's not amazing though and so I have no trouble painting it.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To get started I went to Jim's house and collected colors from the room the table will live in. We loaded the table into my car and I brought it to my studio.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Step one: A light sanding</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Step two: Primer</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Step three: First coat of paint</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Step four: A second coat</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Step five: Decorative painted design</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Step six: A glaze of oil based paint with gold dust added into it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Step seven: Textured surface with a rubber comb</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Step eight: Five coats of Polyurethane</span><br />

I loved seeing that old thing transformed into something beautiful (at least I thought it was at the time). I don't think it lasted very long though. I'm sure I didn't prepare the surface very well.<br />

So in the last 20 years I've learned a lot through trial and error.<br />
