Tanchoi Weaving Pattern
Tanchoi is an elaborate and comprehensive weaving technique practiced in parts of Northern India to create beautiful Tanchoi textiles. This art originated in China and was brought to India by three brothers with the last name ‘choi.’ The technique therefore came to be known as ‘Tanchoi’, which literally means ‘three chois’ (tan – three, Choi – brothers). They introduced the art to the Indian weavers in Surat (Gujarat) and later the Varanasi weavers started making less expensive versions. Since then the amalgamation of Chinese technique with Indian style of weaving was created to form the Indianised version of Tanchoi sarees.

The Saree
The tanchoi weavers initially wove yard age and sarees, which were mostly used by the Parsi community. But today, Tanchoi has remarkably gained popularity throughout India. Employing a technique similar to that of brocade, weavers of Benaras make sarees using colorful extra weft silk yarn for their unique patterns. Tanchoi saree resembles a fine miniature. In tanchoi sarees, the designs are always floral with interspersing of birds. Figures of flying birds, paired cocks amidst floral sprays are worked on them. The usual ground is bright blue, purple, green or red with areas patterned in tabby weave. Sometimes the pallu is done more solidly with peacocks, baskets or bunches of flowers or hunting scenes. Tanchoi silk sarees are also in dazzling floral, geometrical and paisley designs. Some tanchoi sarees have a rich gold border and two gold bands on the pallav. The more exclusive ones have gold checks with lotus roundels all over which are known as butis.

What is Gota Embroidery?

Gota embroidey work is similar to applique, where woven gold cloth or metal is placed onto other fabric to create different surface textures. It is basically a form of fabric ornamentation. Gota lacing is extremely popular and odhni and turban edges of Rajasthan are often worked with it. Many printed or embroidered ghaghras, salwar kurtas, sarees are also trimmed with gota work.

Gota Embroidery Process

Essentially, gota is a band of gold or silver ribbon that varies with width, woven in a satin weave. A metal yarn that is made of beaten gold or silver forms the weft and silk or cotton is used in the warp. Gota work is worked on fabric with the appliqué technique. With a slight hemming or simple running stitch, stylish designs flow from the weaver's fingers on to the garment.

Originally real gold and silver metals were used to embroider but were eventually replaced by copper coated with silver as the genuine way of making it was very expensive. Now a days there are even more inexpensive options available. The copper has been replaced by polyester film which is further metalized and coated to suit requirements. This is known as Plastic Gota and is highly durable as it has a good resistance to moisture and does not tarnish as opposed to metal based Gota.

The popular design elements used in this embroidery process are like flowers, leaves, stylized mango motifs and heart shapes. Checkerboard patterns are also quite a favorite in the region of Rajasthan. Animal figures, like the elephant, bird figures like parrot, peacock are some of the popular motifs used in Gota work. As a variation, floral designs are cut from gota and embroidered on to the cloth itself. The designs can be made more elaborate and rich like the enameled jewellery by filling some sections of the pattern with colored satin. Previously, artisans of Rajasthan used gold or silver dust for Khari printing. This was later replaced by flakes of crushed mica, or cheaper metal powders, called bodal. Nowadays, granular and fine metallic powders, in various colors on a gold or silver base, are used for tinsel printing. The most common motifs, used in khari printing, are the phul, chandani, buti, mor, mogra, keri and khaja. The ground fabric can be of any colour and does not have to be washed earlier as in other printing techniques.

The usual motifs are flowers, sprays, round buties (asrafis) and net patterns (jaal). Sunrise and temple border are also a specialty. Ginni, or coin, is a traditional Chanderi motif. Motifs are drawn from the Earth and sky, hunting Scenes, the tree of life, birds, fruits, flowers, man-woman, heavenly bodies. Great care is given to the buti or motif in the body which enriches the design. A variety of motifs are used such as Ashrafi, Churi, Phul- Patti, Phul-Buta, Bundi, Keri, Baddi Ka Phul, Akhrot, Paan, Suraj Buti, Eeth, Kirkita, Rui Phul Kinar, Meena Buti, Kalgi, Ghoongra, Khajura, Dunaliya, Iknaliya Buti, Iknaliya Buti and Geometric designs are also used. These motifs are used in borders, pallav and main field of the sari. Plain saris are also woven, sometimes zari is also used.

Chanderi Saree Colors

These sarees have a rare fusion of soft and contrasting colors. Chanderi sari is known for soft colors and the perfect balance between the border and the body of the saree. However, there are some typical contrasting combinations like black against red and Ganga-Jamuna saris, with green on one border and red or Kumkum on the other with a natural off white body. The traditional colors are pastel shades of green, peach, pink, and blue. Cream and off white is also used now. Saris in all dark and light shades are being produced. Process of making blue pottery products

Due to its low plasticity, blue pottery cannot be molded on the potter's wheel. The material has to be molded by hand, and given beautiful shapes. The product is molded in parts, and then joined. Phulkari embroidery comes from the colorful state of Punjab in India. The phukari embroidery is known for its ellaborate embroidery work in multi colored threads all over the fabric. Originally this type of embroidery was seen in the traditional odnis or churnis worn by the punjabi women. Over the years this embroidery became heavy and more complex and the heavily embroidered odhinis came to be known as bagh (literally garden). All over embroidery work in Phulkari is not only on seen odhinis but also on saris, suits, bed covers and home furnishing in bright and vivid colours. Phulkari, literal meaning of which is flower-crafting, has become an important part of the trousseau in Punjab. The technique used

The stitch Phulkari consists long short darning stitches. It is a unique method of embroidery. This is because it is stitched entirely on the wrong side of the cloth and the pattern takes shape on the right side. The design is neither drawn nor traced. Phulkari designs are guided only by the embroider’s skill and imagination, without any paper pattern or reference books.

Zari Embroidery is an ancient art of embellishing with fine glittery thread of gold or silver. The word ‘zari’ literary means ‘gold’ in Persian. It refers to ‘kalabatun,’ the fine threads which are made from silver coated with real gold. The Kantha Embroidery is the most popular form of embroidery practised by the rural women of West Bengal. Kontha or kantha is a saskrit word which means `rags`. Basically it is a recycling art. The precious cloths when became worn-out were not thrown away. The women piled them in layers and stitched them. There was another tale associated with the origin of the embroidery. It states that kantha origin to lord Buddha and his disciples. It is said that they used to cover themselves with the thrown away rags patched and stitched together.

The traditional form of Kantha embroidery was done on the sarees and soft dhotis. The thread for this craft was drawn out of the borders of these used garments. Traditionally the discarded sarees were piled on top of one another and quilted. The kantha embroidery is a simple running stitch made on the edges. The design is first traced, then covered over with running stitches. Although the stitch is simple running stitch, there is some unique patterns that make the stitch extraordinary. The cloth was given layers that were kept together by the stitches. The cloth had multiple uses. It could be used to sleep on or as a light blanket. Kantha for the Bengali folk means embroidered quilt.

Limitless Designs of Kantha Embroidery
The entire cloth is covered with running stitches and has beautiful folk motifs, floral motifs, animal and birds figures, images of Gods, and geometrical shapes. Themes from day to day activities are also taken into consideration. Some of the popular varietues are as follows:

Archilata kantha: They are used in small, covers for mirrors or toilet accessories with wide, colorful borders.

Baiton kantha: They are square wraps with elaborate borders used for covering books and other valuables.

The contemporary Kantha is not necessarily done on old multiple layered saris or dhotis. It can also be seen on modern day garments like the sarees, dupatta, shirts, bedding and other furnishing fabrics. For these fabrics and dresses the base fabric used is cotton and silk. For rural women, ”Kantha” is a blessing. Earlier they made ”Kantha” during their free hours in the afternoons, but now, they are getting paid money for their work.
