<content type="xhtml" xml:lang="en-US" xml:base="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/balzer_designs/"><div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p><em>At very long last, here is my post about the "Chinese Checkers" class with <a href="http://www.lkperrella.com/">Lynne Perrella</a>.</em></p><p style="text-align: center;"><strong><span style="font-size: 16px;">"Creating offers us an opportunity." - Lynne Perrella</span></strong></p><p>Lynne was here in NYC, teaching classes through<a href="http://theinkpadnyc.com/"> The Ink Pad</a>.  The Ink Pad is Manhattan's only stamp store.  They are an adorable little store in the West Village that is packed to the rafters with stamps!  You have never seen so many stamps stuffed into such a small space.  It's a delight for the senses!  </p><p>I knew about Lynne from her reputation.  When I first became interested in paper crafts, she was the first person whose name I remembered because her work kept catching my attention over and over again.  This is an example of her work:</p><p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef0120a5ab4a03970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="LKP_Kahlo_pages" class="at-xid-6a00d8341c766153ef0120a5ab4a03970c " src="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef0120a5ab4a03970c-450wi" style="border: 1px solid black; width: 450px;" title="LKP_Kahlo_pages" /></a> </p><p>When I called the Ink Pad to sign up for the class, there was an enormous wait list.  I was so sad.  </p><p>But, then they called and said that there were so many people on the wait list, Lynne was going to do a second set of classes!  Yay!  I was so happy!</p><p>But, then they gave me the dates of the new class.  Ack!  I was going to be out of town.  Sad again.</p><p>But, then they called a few days before the original class and said that someone had dropped out!  Hooray!</p><p>All of which means, I totally got lucky and got to take the class!!!  (btw: My husband thinks I use too many exclamation points.  Whenever he reads my blog, he makes fun of me.  But, I just tell him that my enthusiasm cannot be contained ;)!)</p><p>Since the store is so small, the Ink Pad holds classes over at the Westbeth Community Center.</p><p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef0120a553a9ed970b-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="155BankStreet" class="at-xid-6a00d8341c766153ef0120a553a9ed970b " src="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef0120a553a9ed970b-450wi" style="border: 1px solid black; width: 450px;" title="155BankStreet" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;">(I snapped this photo outside the classroom - which is on the left.)</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">It was a wet and rainy day.  Gray sky and a generally damp feeling in the air.  But, the classroom is a lovely place with a wall of windows. I tried to combine three iphone photos for a sort of panoramic view.  Take a peek:</p><p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef0120a5ab586a970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="WestbethCommunityCenter" class="at-xid-6a00d8341c766153ef0120a5ab586a970c " src="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef0120a5ab586a970c-450wi" style="width: 450px;" /></a> </p><ol>
<li>There's a small kitchen through that doorway.  And the kitchen has a pass through to area #2.</li>
<li>This area has windows on two sides.  It's where we gathered for some of the collage activities and ate lunch.</li>
<li>That's the main door to the classroom.</li>
<li>That's the window where we hung our work to dry. </li>
<li>That was my work station.  We each got an entire six-foot table to ourselves.  How lovely!  Here's a close up of my work station:</li>
</ol>

<li>She talked about art as an accumulation process.  I love that idea.  It's such a simple statement but it really blew my mind and refocused some of my thinking.</li>
<li>"If you're explaining, you're losing."  This one is hard for me.  I always want the viewer to spot on get what I'm thinking.  I think that's why I use so much text in my work.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: left;">After our chat, we had our first design assignment.  We were given an image to look at and told to cut a silhouette of or find a way to represent some part of it from a sheet of black construction paper.  After we had cut our piece, we were instructed to make a collage, as a class.</p><p style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef0120a6df61b1970b-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false"><img alt="FirstCollage-2Photos" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341c766153ef0120a6df61b1970b " src="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef0120a6df61b1970b-450wi" style="width: 450px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" /></a> Above on the left, you can see students taping their pieces up.  On the right, Lynne is talking about the collage.  Here's a clear view of the whole thing:</p><p style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef012875e16500970c-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false"><img alt="FirstCollage" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341c766153ef012875e16500970c " src="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef012875e16500970c-450wi" style="width: 450px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" /></a> <br />During this exercise, I was struck by several things:</p><ol style="text-align: left;"><li>How startlingly literal I am.  I saw a crown of leaves and cut the leaf frond in the upper right area of the collage.  As you can see, most people were less literal and more creative than I was.</li>
<li>How much absence really matters.  The missing square in the center grid seems to tell a story by its absence.  Or how about the scissors, which are recognizable as scissors because of that center hole.  It makes all the difference.</li>
<li>Collage has always seemed like a faraway idea.  Something foreign and cool that I'm not capable of doing.  This exercise reinforced the idea that its something I know how to do, already do, and isn't an esoteric art.  It's simply about relating disparate objects to each other.</li>
</ol>
<div style="text-align: left;"><p>I could go on and on, but I won't.  Because here's the best part.  Lynne instructed us to get all the leftover bits of paper we had cut away - every single tiny scrap - and add it to the collage.  We got busy with the masking tape and started hanging everything up!</p><p><a href="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef012875e16b87970c-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false"><img alt="Collage2-adjusting" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341c766153ef012875e16b87970c " src="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef012875e16b87970c-450wi" style="width: 450px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" /></a> <br />Here's the result (that's Lynne talking about it):</p><p><a href="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef012875e16c8e970c-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false"><img alt="Collage2-talkingabout" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341c766153ef012875e16c8e970c " src="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef012875e16c8e970c-450wi" style="width: 450px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" /></a> <br />There were a lot of lessons learned here (in fact Lynne calls the first exercise "learning" and the second one "unlearning"), but the biggest one?  Well, I think it's kind of obvious, but I'll state it anyway: <strong>Nothing is garbage.  The negatives and waste product of your intentions, are full of creative possibilities!</strong></p><p>We went to lunch, giving our gesso covered red rosin paper some time to dry, and I snapped these totally fun photos (and completely unrelated to anything, but I wanted to share because there's something about urban decay that I love) on the way back from lunch:</p><p><a href="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef0120a6df75a8970b-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false"><img alt="BrickDoor" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341c766153ef0120a6df75a8970b " src="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef0120a6df75a8970b-450wi" style="width: 450px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" /></a> <br />

<li>You can use them dry.</li>
<li>After applying them, rub with a paper towel to pick up the texture of the background.</li>
<li>Use water to remove some of the color.</li>
<li>You can use them wet - just dip them into your water.</li>
</ul>

there is a tie in and you can tell me or show me how you interpreted
the number five."  At the same time, I spied <a href="http://sassafras.typepad.com/sassafras/2009/12/good-monday-to-you.html">this challenge</a> on the Sassafras blog.  It's super easy, just to use the Amplify collection.</p><p>So I mixed the two challenges together:</p><p><a href="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef0120a7621372970b-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false"><img alt="5Truths-sm" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341c766153ef0120a7621372970b " src="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef0120a7621372970b-450wi" style="width: 450px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" /></a> <br />Here's a close up of that green frame:</p><p><a href="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef01287665280f970c-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false"><img alt="5TruthsDetail-sm" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341c766153ef01287665280f970c " src="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef01287665280f970c-450wi" style="width: 450px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" /></a> <br />Here are a few notes about how the layout came together:<br /> </p><ul>
<li>I traced some Jenni Bowlin packaging to get the bracket shape and then I cut the bracket in half and glued one half to each side.</li>
<li>All five of these photos fit onto a 4x6” canvas.  The sum really is greater than the parts.  It’s such an economical (not to mention a way to get lots of photos on a page) way to print your photos!</li>
<li>I built up the flower at the bottom of the green frame with lots of foam adhesive (you can really see it in the detail photo).</li>
<li>The numbers (fun new-to-me <a href="http://www.studiocalico.com/shop/item/184">Studio Calico stamps</a>) were stamped on white cardstock and then cut out.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>ETA</strong>: Just found out that this layout of mine (also made with the Amplify collection):</p><p><a href="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef0120a76c9b76970b-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false"><img alt="Ben&amp;Matt-sm" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341c766153ef0120a76c9b76970b " src="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef0120a76c9b76970b-450wi" style="width: 450px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" /></a> <br />was one of <a href="http://sassafras.typepad.com/sassafras/2009/12/3-winners-to-announce.html">two winners over  at the Sassafras blog</a>!  Woo Hoo!</p>

<ul>
<li><strong>Gesso</strong>: <a href="http://www.goldenpaints.com/technicaldata/gesso.php">Golden</a> - I've tried other brands, but I like the way Golden dries.  The surface is my favorite.</li>
<li><strong>Acrylic Paint</strong>: <a href="http://www.rangerink.com/products/artists/Claudine_Hellmuth.htm">Studio by Claudine Hellmuth for Ranger</a>, <a href="http://www.makingmemories.com/Products/detail/scrapbook-colors-paint">Making Memories</a> - I like the translucent and yet creamy qualities of the Studio paints, and the opacity and quick drying time of the Making Memories.  Color wise, the Studio line has a fabulous skin tone color called traditional tan.  And Making Memories just comes in such a wonderful array of colors (school bus yellow is my fave).</li>
<li><strong>Watercolor</strong>: <a href="http://www.sakuraofamerica.com/Watercolors-Supplies">Koi by Sakura</a> - Great intense colors.  I use the tube watercolors, but their pan watercolors are nice too.  (Here are some <a href="http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091112185449AARvNYK">opinions</a> on the subject of tube vs. pan.)<br /> </li>

<ul>
<li>I buy student grade brushes.</li>
<li>I buy both synthetic and natural bristles.  I'm cheap, so I go off of price.  And usually end up with synthetics.  There's some belief that you should use synthetics for watercolor and acrylics and natural for oil paints (since natural bristles tend to dry out faster), but it's a fast and furious debate with opinions on both sides.</li>
<li>A great starter set of brushes (at a nice price) is the <a href="http://www.rangerink.com/products/prod_brushes_CHstudiobrushes.htm">Studio Art Brushes</a> from Claudine Hellmuth for Ranger.</li>
<li>My most used brushes are a #12 flat, #6 round, and #2 round.</li>
<li>Sponge brushes have their place in the world, but I'm going to tell you that you will be a better painter and get better results if you use a bristle brush instead.  Using a sponge brush is kind of like trying to bake a cake in a box instead of a pan.  It will work in a pinch, but it's really not ideal.</li>
</ul>

<ul>
<li><strong>Dye Based Ink</strong>: <a href="http://www.rangerink.com/products/prod_dyeink_distresspads.htm">Ranger Distress Ink</a> - It's water reactive (runs when it comes in contact with water), archival, can be used for embossing (unlike most dye based ink), dries relatively quickly, and comes in lots of delicious colors.</li>
<li><strong>Solvent Based Ink</strong>: <a href="http://www.tsukineko.com/store/cart.php?m=product_list&amp;c=25">Staz On by Tsukineko</a> - I can't stay away from my StazOn.  It comes in lots and lots of colors.  It is permanent on lots of surfaces (including non-porous ones like plastic and glass) and won't run when you paint on top of it or pour water all over it.  Love that!<a href="http://www.rangerink.com/products/prod_dyeink_archival.htm" /></li>

<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.rangerink.com/products/prod_dyeink_adirondackcolorwash.htm">Adirondack Color Wash by Ranger</a> - This is my #1 favorite.  It is fabric dye and deeply pigmented.  It is also highly reactive with water and other mediums like gesso.  Warning: it will get all over your hands.  Use shampoo to get it off your skin.</li>
<li><a href="http://mytatteredangels.com/shop.php?cPath=25">Glimmer Mist by Tattered Angels</a> - This is the first spray ink I ever discovered.  It's easy to find and easy to use.  I do have some issues with the nozzle clogging, but the solution is not to shake the Glimmer Mist.  Twirl it like a nail polish bottle.</li>
<li>Homemade Glimmer Mist (directions <a href="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/balzer_designs/2009/09/tutorial-make-your-own-glimmer-mist.html">here</a>) -I have Mini Misters full of custom colors.  These are the ones I tend to take to crops and in my traveling art journal case.</li>

<li><strong>Black Journaling Pen</strong>: <a href="http://www.sakuraofamerica.com/Pen-Archival">Sakura Pigma Micron</a> - In point sizes from .005 to .08, I adore these waterproof, archival, pigment pens.  (By the way, follow that link and you'll see a video I made on the Pigma line of pens!)</li>
<li><strong>White Journaling Pen</strong>: <a href="http://www.jetpens.com/search.php?q=Uni-ball+Signo+Broad+UM-153+Gel+Pen+-+White+Ink">Uniball Signo White Gel Pen</a> - I buy mine by the box full at JetPens.com.  Best white pen ever.</li>
<li><strong>Pen on Non-Porous Surface</strong>: <a href="http://www.sakuraofamerica.com/Marker-Paint-Markers">Permapaque by Sakura</a> - This is a paint pen without the mess of a paint pen.  Nothing to shake and no tip to mush around.  Opaque color in metallic and matte tones.  The markers have a thin tip and a thick tip and I use them instead of Sharpies all the time.</li>
<li><strong>Coloring Pen</strong>: <a href="http://www.sakuraofamerica.com/Pen-3d-pen">Sakura Glaze Pen</a> - When it dries, it's dimensional and slick looking.  (Click through the link to see a video I did for Sakura about their Glaze and Souffle pens.)  They're delicious!</li>

<li>Easy to remove and insert pages.</li>
<li>Bulky pages don't get squished and flattened as they do in traditional post bound albums.</li>
<li>You can include many different page sizes - 12x12, 8.5x11, 6x6, 6x12 - in the same album.</li>
<li>The albums hold a ton of pages.  Love that!</li>

<li><strong>Tape Runner</strong>: <a href="http://www.cropandstick.com/pc-299-1-3m-scotch-atg-714-adhesive-applicator.aspx">ATG</a> - Love the value.  So much adhesive for so little money.  (The gun itself is pricey, but the refills are dirt cheap.)  It takes forever to run out and really sticks.  I have the red gun, which takes 1/4" tape.  Be sure to buy the "gold" adhesive, which is acid-free.  It looks huge, but it's not particularly heavy and surprisingly good for folks with arthritis because the rolling motion is so easy.</li>
<li><strong>Wet Adhesive</strong>: <a href="http://www.goldenpaints.com/products/medsadds/gels/gels.php">Gel Medium by Golden</a> - So much more than just an adhesive, gel medium should be in every crafter's stash.  It acts as an adhesive, sealant, resist agent, transfer agent, and paint extender.  I use a palette knife to apply it, so there's no brush that gets all icked up with glue.</li>
<li><strong>Adhesive Dots</strong>: <a href="http://www.gluedots.com/display/router.aspx?DocID=1085">Glue Dots</a> - I like the ones in the flat package.  I buy mini and craft size.</li>
<li><strong>Foam Adhesive</strong>: <a href="http://www.eksuccess.com/products_detail.php?product_id=2455">EK Success 3-D Dots</a> - Love that they come in black and white.  They are a great height, excellently sticky, and just all around rock!</li>
<li><strong>Glue Pen</strong>: <a href="http://www.eksuccess.com/products_detail.php?product_id=3112">Zig 2-way Glue</a> - I like the ballpoint tip of the Squeeze and Roll one.  Makes it easy to glue on those tiny little details.</li>
<li><strong>Fabric Glue</strong>: <a href="http://www.beaconadhesives.com/cgfab.html">FabriTac from Beacon Adhesives</a> - It smells awful, but it really works.  Holds down your felt, ribbon, fabric, and thread.  And it's washable!</li>

return false"><img alt="Home-sm" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341c766153ef0128760d3b70970c " src="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef0128760d3b70970c-450wi" style="border: 1px solid black; width: 450px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" title="Home-sm" /></a> <br />To create the background:</p><p><strong>STEP ONE:</strong> Take a handful of Prima flowers (any kind, any shape, any size) and spread them across a piece of white cardstock.  I think it's important to go off the edge and not just keep them all in the center of the layout.</p><p><a href="http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c766153ef0120a70b2f89970b-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' );
