Etsy Combined Shipping

Etsy Combined Shipping is one of the discounts we offer at our Zipper Store, allowing customers to get better per zipper pricing when buying multiple zipper lots. For example, we charge $3 to ship 25 zippers in the US. So, if you purchase 25 zippers for $9 plus $3 shipping, your zipper cost is $0.48 per zipper. If you purchase two 25 zipper lots, Etsy will combine shipping for you, and you will still pay only $3 for shipping, so the zipper cost goes down to $0.42 per zipper. We also offer reduced shipping costs to our international customers.

How does Etsy Combined Shipping work? If you purchase several items from the same Etsy store, find the item with the highest shipping cost, then add the additional shipping costs from the "with another item" column for the other items. Etsy will adjust the shipping cost as soon as the items are added to the cart, so you will know the total shipping cost before completing the purchase. Please note that all Etsy stores are independently owned, so you will not be able to get the combined shipping discount if you purchase zippers from our zipper store and, for example, jewelry supplies from someone else. I am excited to share these new 7 inch zippers and 4 inch zippers listings with YKK zippers color chart. For quite a while, I had been wanting to give my customers more options and the ability to pick and choose the colors included in their assortments. And now I am able to do that. At this time, I can offer this option only for 10, 15, and 25 zipper lots as I am afraid I will not be able to fill special requests for larger lots as of yet (like 50 zippers in just 1 or 2 colors), but if you are interested in 50 or 100 zippers, with 1-5 zippers in each color, please do feel free to contact me by convo for special listings :). I hope to include more colors in this color chart soon and give you some more options in other zipper sizes as well. If you would like to suggest a color you frequently use and see on popular designer fabrics, please do let me know by commenting on this post.

Fun YKK Zippers

Being a YKK zippers supplier, I tend to notice YKK zippers on Old Navy Jackets, Oshkosh Toddler Clothing, tents, handbags, and many other things. Today I am sharing my latest find - the cutest "The Cat in the Hat" toddler boots with fun red and white YKK zippers. My friend's daughter was wearing these the other day and I couldn't resist asking to take a photo. Let me note that I am a Big Fan of Dr. Seuss books and The Cat in the Hat in particular! "The Cat in the Hat" embellishment is super cute, and the red and white YKK zippers make the boots even more fun! I will have to look for these YKK zippers - I would love to carry them in my Etsy store. I wanted to add a link to a store that sells these boots (just in case you would like a pair), but the only place I could find them was Ebay. My friend's daughter got these as a gift about a year ago, so I am not sure if they still sell these... Seussland.com seems to have the best selection of merchandise with Dr. Seuss characters, so I am guessing that's where these boots came from :)

Etsy Direct Checkout

Etsy is introducing "Direct Checkout" - a new feature that will allow Etsy buyers sumbit their orders and, instead of paying by Paypal, use credit cards to pay for it. I know I lost quite a few Etsy Sales by being unable to take credit cards if buyers didn't have a Paypal account, so I am thrilled that Etsy will now allow us to take credit card payments. Of course, there's a fee charged for every credit card sale - 3% of the sale amount plus $0.25 transaction fee and, depending on the total amount of the sale, it may turn out to be more than what Paypal charges (1.9-2.9% plus $0.30 fee per transaction), so, if you are an Etsy seller, that's definitely something you may want to consider when deciding whether to take advantage of the new Direct Checkout. If offering Direct Checkout brings extra sales, it will be well worth the price. If you would like to learn more about Etsy Direct Checkout, be sure to read this Direct Checkout Announcement on Etsy Blog. For now, I got on the list of Etsy Sellers interested in trying out the new checkout option and hope to be able to take Credit Card payments at my Zipper Store soon :) It is also good to know that Etsy has no intention of discontinuing the Paypal checkout option, so Etsy buyers and sellers will be the ones who will choose how to pay and get paid.

My customers often ask me: "What colors are included in your Zipper assortments ?" Every assortment I put together turns out to be a little different. Ykk Zippers Color Card includes over 400 colors. I usually have 30-40 different YKK Zippers Colors in stock, and the assortments in different zipper sizes vary. However, there are some colors I usually try to stock in all sizes, and you will frequently find at least 17-20 colors to be similar in each zipper lot you buy from me. The photo to the left should be a good reference as it shows most of the colors you will find in the 25-50-100 zipper assortments purchased at my Zipper Store. I usually include 4-7 neutrals, 3-5 blues, a turquoise or a teal, 3-4 greens, 1-2 reds, 2-3 pinks, 1-3 oranges, 1-2 yellows, 1-3 purples (including lavender, eggplant, and lilac), depending on what I have in stock at the time you place your order. If you do not use neutrals, or yellows and oranges, for example, you can always include a note to me at checkout (however, if you only request certain colors, you may get a zipper lot with fewer than 25 ykk zippers colors). Ykk Zipper Color Card doesn't include color names - only numbers. For example, I carry vanilla zippers in YKK color #121, but YKK actually makes vanilla zippers in 4-5 different shades. Here's a close-up of the same Zipper lot with my color names and YKK color numbers below.

"I am born and raised in Kailua Hawaii, have 3 boys, 4 months, 18 months and 4 years old. I used to be a sales rep but when I had my second decided to be a stay-at-home-mom. I got the itch for some type of entrepreneur and had been sewing for a long time. I first opened my fabric site, sweetkapua on etsy, to see if it would get any traffic. I didn't see many prints like the ones I had. I had my first sale after 2 weeks and I was hooked. I opened my bag site: madeofaloha. I update it regularly but I have found that my fabric supply site is more lucritive than the pouch site. Once sweetkapua started to take off, I decided I wanted an independent website that didn't have any site name attached so I started KawaiiFabricShop.com and I recently started on ebay. I also have two blogs: sweetkapua, which is where I feature new fabrics and talk about my daily finds in design and crafts and mothermana'o where I tell the tales of mothering 3 boys all under the age of 5 and surviving.
Being a stay-home-mom I am doing all of this business in between naps, feedings and preschool drop off and pick ups and 99% of it is through my iphone. Running these website keeps the business woman in me fullfilled while allowing me to stay home with my sweet boys. I enjoy every minute of it!"

I asked Kristin to tell me a little about her business, and here's what she had to say:

"I have been sewing and embroidering for 15 years and have made almost everything from curtains and quilts to prom dresses and Halloween costumes in sizes for people and dolls :-). As for me and my dolls. Dolls are little girls that never grow up. Well-made commercial clothing, both human and doll, is hard to come by. I live in a small community where retail choices are limited. My girls were tiny when they were little and commercial clothing was either too long for their short stature, or too grown-up for my taste. Sewing allowed me to outfit my girls in clothes that lasted them twice as long and I didn't have to succumb to the styles forced on us by retailers. One of my biggest pet peeves is when adults dress their children like mini-adults in clothing styles that are really not appropriate for the age. I loved making dresses, jammies, and pants for my girls and their dolls when they were little. I still make holiday dresses and the occasional dance dress. Now that they have grown, I get to make doll clothes for other girl's dolls. I love the creativity making doll clothes allows me. I don't have anybody saying they don't like the color or the pattern makes them uncomfortable. They never change size, so fitting them is easy. Best of all, no matter what I make them and how crazy the fabric (such as the jeans in the photo) they always love it and wear it with pride. I think it is important for girls to be girls for as long as they can. My clothes reflect that concept by keeping clothing as conservative and child-like as possible. I love the innocence of childhood and want to keep that a part of their lives for as long as possible."

K&C Supplies is now carrying a new type of zippers - YKK brass Zippers. These are new YKK brass zippers with closed bottom. Perfect for Jeans, Pants, and Textile Crafts.

According to Wikipedia,

"Metallic zippers are the classic zipper type, found mostly in jeans today. The teeth are not a coil, but are individual pieces of metal moulded into shape and set on the zipper tape at regular intervals. Metal zippers are made in brass, aluminum and nickel, according to the metal used for teeth making. All these zippers are basically made from flat wire. Are YKK zippers food Safe ?

Are you concerned whether YKK zippers are food safe and whether it's ok to use YKK zippers on kids items and items that come in direct contact with food, like snack bags? Here's some information from YKK Facebook page, regarding CPSIA compliance:

"The CPSIA regulates the amount of lead content permitted in children’s (12 years and under) products. YKK does not make children’s products, but YKK items may be included in children’s products by the manufacturer. The current CPSIA standard for lead in the substrate of a children’s product is 300 ppm. Beginning August 2011, the limit for lead in the substrate of a children’s product will drop further to 100 ppm unless the CPSC Commission determines that a limit of 100 ppm is not technologically feasible.
... The company has been successful in lowering the lead content in the substrate of most of its products to 90 ppm well in advance of the 2011 standard... YKK tests its products internally using EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer) technology to ensure these lead levels...

A little update from the Outer Banks

Thank you to our customers for checking on us and keeping us in your thoughts. As you may already know, Outer Banks took a direct hit from Hurricane Irene, and caused a lot of damage around here. We were very happy that we evacuated from the Beach - it was pretty scary. Our neighbours witnessed how Water came Rushing in from the Sound, filling up streets with 3-4 ft of water in minutes. Our garage got flooded - we had 2.5 feet of water, so plenty of personal belongings ruined, but we certainly didn't get it as bad as those in Columbia (45 minutes away), where houses are completely gone after a tornado went through. One of the craziest things I have ever seen is fish swimming in our back yard!
It will take some time, but Outer Banks will recover and keep on being a popular destination for tourists. In fact, many people are already coming in for an Outer Banks Vacation. But from what I heard, roads to Duck, Corolla, and Corova are still closed to tourists, and the highway south of Nags Head is also closed indefinitely - Highway NC 12 was ripped in several places, and the only way to reach Hatteras and Ocracoke at this point is by boat...
As for our Zipper Store, we are now back open and operating. Thank you for your business!

Tonight I logged into my Etsy shop to find everything in My Etsy Shop in German. For a minute, I thought that Etsy was in the process of making changes and it was a temporary "hiccup". But then I decided to look through some of the shop settings and ended up at "Einstellungen" tab. I clicked on the "Preferences" tab under "Einstellungen" ("settings" in German), and sure enough, my Etsy Shop language was set to "Deutsch". I know I didn't change any of the settings, and my Etsy shop looked just fine a couple hours ago, so I am a little puzzled as to how the Shop language got changed, but I reset it back to English. I did a search on Twitter, and someone had mentioned the same problem with Etsy language settings 6 days ago. I am not sure if Etsy is slowly introducing all shops to the new Shop Language setting, but it is certainly weird that my shop language got changed with the shop location being the United States. Anyways, I am glad I got the "little bug" fixed.
You may be experiencing the same problem with your Etsy Shop being in French. The instructions for changing the shop Language settings would be very similar. "Settings" is the 4th Link in your account panel on the left.

How do you measure a zipper? A zipper is basically measured by the length of the zipper coil or from top metal stoppers (that prevent zipper slider from coming off the zipper) to bottom metal stopper (or retainer box for separating zippers). The overall zipper length is usually about 1-1.5 inches more for seam allowance.

The zipper in the photo is a 7 inch zipper with overall length of 8.5 inches.

We are all used to seeing YKK zippers on clothing, bags, tents, gadget cases, and about everything else that has a zipper on it. But what does YKK on zipper mean? Is YKK a type of zipper or a zipper brand? YKK is an abbriviation for Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikikaisha. In Japanese, Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikikaisha means "Yoshida Industries Limited". YKK company was founded in Tokyo in 1936 by 24 year old Tadao Yoshida. According to Wikipedia, YKK Group is world's largest zippers manufacturer. Besides fastening products, YKK also manufactures artchitectural products and industrial machinery. YKK Group fastening products include zippers, hook and loop, plastic buckles, webbings, metal snaps, buttons, and other products. YKK makes nylon, brass, nickel, and aluminum zippers. There are also eco-friendly YKK zippers Natulon that are made out of recycled bottles and discarded polyester fabrics. Molded plastic zippers, invisible zippers, jeans zippers, upholstery zippers - it will be difficult to find a type of zipper that YKK does not make.
