Cream Cheese, Brown Sugar, Caramel, and Toffee Bars...Oh My....

A friend from years ago shared this recipe with me and since then I've used it frequently for gatherings and have shared it with others. It's gets rave reviews every time, as well as repeat invitations.

Below is a recipe for what I've named

The Apple Dip

Satisfies 10-12 Adults

Prep to Serve Time:

15 Minutes - the apple cutting takes the longest

Ingredients:

1 Bar of Cream Cheese, soften (1/3 fat ok)
1/2 of Light Brown Sugar

4 large Green Apples, sliced

1/4 or so of Creamy Caramel

4 Skor or Toffee Candy Bars

1 Pie Dish or a Serving Plate

Step 1:

Combine in a small bowl your Brown Sugar and Softened Cream Cheese

Step 2:

Smear Cream Cheese mixture into/onto your serving dish

Step 3:

Open your Caramel Tub (I try to use Low-Fat when available, makes me feel better)

Grab a large Dollop with your Spatula and begin to spear a layer of it onto the cream cheese mixture

It should look like this when finished.

Step 4:

Break open all candy bars and place into your processor. If a processor isn't available, in the past I've placed all broken candy pieces into a ziplock bag. I've then place the bag in between a dish town and used the flat side of a spoon to mash up the pieces finely.

After mixing it should, can, look like this; some finely chopped and some pieces still large.

Step 5:

Remove all large pieces and place to the side. Sprinkle finely chopped candy over top of dish to evenly cover the mixture below. Add remaining large pieces to the processor and mix again.

Step 6:

Wash and dry your apples and begin to cut them into wedges. You can use an apple cutter but I've found that it's the same amount of time. I like to cut them clean, meaning remove any core pieces from the apple.

Once you've finished cutting, place your apples into an air tight container and marinate them in 1/4 cup of lemon juice to preserve freshness and prevent browning. 7-up works as well.

When ready to serve, assemble apple wedges all the way around the brim of your dish.

Table Runner Project

So every time this year, when operation "Take Down Christmas" occurs, my house looks

so bare, I get into full home decor mode.

I've taken the last few weeks, during my hibernation from sewing customer orders, to fall back in love with Pinterest and thank goodness for so many talented people out there, I've been inspired to add a table runner to

may main dinning room.

I have a For the Home pinboard; organization of what I love for the home, at it's best.

Below are images of the pins that inspired me and where my project stands today.

I'll start by saying, if you're ever looking for a

{Fabric Hoarding Buddy} you've found her! Below is a picture of a shower curtain I've had in my stash of fabrics for at least 6 years. I knew I'd use it for curtains or something one day and I tell you, it was a wise hoarding decision. :) I used it to make a long, 82", table runner (pictures below).

Now, my table runner project is 75% complete because I'm still torn as to which accent I should add. This is where you come in, what should I do? Hubby likes it plain but the images above are so purdy that I think it needs more.

What do you think? Leave it, add ruffles or rosette flowers!

Homemade Chips with Apple Salsa

Happy Holidays all!

I created last week a great appetizer for a PTA meeting and got buzz on Instagram about wanting the recipe. Below you will find a quick, lite, and taste treat, that's easy to prepare.

Specs:

15 minutes prep time

7 - 14 minutes bake time

375 degrees

Ingredients:

3 Gala Apples

2 Granny Smith (tart)

4 Flour Tortillas (10 inch)

1/2 Cup of White Sugar

2-4 Teaspoons of Cinnamon

4 tablespoons of Butter

White Chocolate (optional)

Baking Needs:

Foil

Baking Sheet

Cooking Spray (optional)

Directions:

Preheat Oven to 350 degrees

Cut Tortillas into triangles and place in bowl, set aside

Melt Butter

Mix together 1/3 cup of sugar with 2 teaspoons of cinnamon

Mix together butter sugar mixture over tortillas

Cover baking sheet with foil

Evenly coat foil with cooking spray

Dump out chips to evenly cover sheet

Place in oven and bake for 7 minutes.

Check on, turn over chips, and cook an additional 7 minutes

Due to oven variations, take chips out prior to deep

brown corners for desired chip done -ness.

While chips bake, shave and dice up your apples.

Please in bowl and coat with remaining sugar and cinnamon. You may add more or less of these two, depends on your palate.

Once chips are done baking, set aside to cool.

Assemble chips and apple salsa on a decorative plate.

If you choose to drizzle with chocolate, follow chocolate melting instructions.

Enjoy, and happy eating!

I've been having so much fun with Burlap this year. I had some scrap left over from my Fall Banner, so I decided to make my favorite phrase for a Christmas Banner: Be Merry.

Below are a few images of my new banner, and how I incorporated it into my decor.

I posted this picture to my Instagram account. It's the first place I post anything I'm doing, even before Facebook.

Here it is, displayed with our stockings, in the most popular room of our home...the family room. It's a great way to be reminded during the hustle of the season, stress that might come and unexpected obstacles that might arise

to still BE MERRY.

This series of Small business and Customer Service will be broken into two parts...here's part 1.

I recently mentioned on Facebook how I'd like to share my lessons on customer service...so today's post

While customer service has changed dramatically with the use of the internet, there are still some cases where you get the pleasure of networking in person. I approach each new person I meet, whether in a working environment (Craft Show) or casual, as a future relationship which could lead to referring my business

or being a regular customer. As well, I just love meeting new people hence, social butterfly.

Here's the Facebook post I mention in the video sharing how I made someones day, and they in return, made mine.

I posted this question on my Facebook page, and she replied with an answer and two compliments.

Because of extra time, listening, and talking, I've possibly expanded my customer base. So via the traditional way, I've built a relationship with a buying customer who then could happily share me/Handmade by Hilani, with her friends and co-workers.

Best Rolled Sugar Cookie Recipe

Hi Everyone!

Around this time of year, I round up my baking supplies and grab my boys to make memories in the kitchen. One of our favorites to bake are cut-out Sugar Cookies. I searched the internet years ago and tested so many but

finally came to the very best, and now a staple

recipe this time of year.

The dough makes so much, it lasts all month long. I bake only a little at a time, and freeze the unused dough, which is great for on the fly baking.

The key is to make sure you keep the dough thick when cutting, and roll out fresh from the freezer!

They are a sure fire hit when shared.

Below is the Recipe with tips on how to achieve non, thin, crisp cookies, unless that's your style.

Original Source: Rolled Sugar Cookies

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cup of butter, softened

2 cups of white sugar

4 eggs, room temperature

2-3 teaspoon of vanilla

5 cups of all purpose white flour

2 teaspoons of baking powder

1 teaspoon of salt

Now, the recipe only called for 1 teaspoon of vanilla and I'm a terrible listener when it comes to vanilla, I have a very heavy pour; trust me, more is better.

Prep Time: 20 Minutes

Chill Time: 1-12 hours

Cook Time: 5-8 Minutes

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees or 375 for convection

Here, at high altitude, convection is my preferred baking method

1. In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla.

2. In separate bowl mix dry ingredients.

3. Add dry to wet ingredients.

I used a Kitchen-Aid electric mixer. Be advised when slowly adding your 5 cups of flour, it becomes tough for the machine to function so a little at a time.

4. Once fully mixed, prepare saran wrap in an x shape on your counter. Scoop out and place wet dough down

and form into a loaf. Cover dough with saran wrap and chill in the freezer for 1 hour or overnight.

5. Once chilled, remove from freezer and cut with a large knife the amount you wish to use. I like to work with a little bit at a time.

6. I've learned, for best results, use the dough totally frozen. When working with your warm hands, it tends to soften. Then roll out to 1/4 or 1/2 inch thickness.

7. Once cut, bake for small amounts of time to desired consistency color of cookie. I start with 5 minutes. You do not want brown edges so at about 6 minutes pull them out of the oven, and let sit on cookie sheet for 3 more minutes to prolong baking. Once done, be careful, they break easily but that's the beauty of them.

So there you go...I surely hope you enjoy them as much as our family does. They are a hit all over the neighborhood.

Thanksgiving {Indoor} Scavenger Hunt Printable

I hosted a play date for an entire day and before doing so, I decided to be creative with how we'd pass the time. Among Play-Doh, coloring Fall specific pictures, and painting of mini pumpkins I incorporated this fun Indoor scavenger hunt printable. I asked those participating to search the main level of our home for the pictured items. As you can image, their eyes lite up and pencils came flying out. They had so much fun counting and scouting, they asked for another one, when all was said and done.

Stamped Washer Ornament via {SweetPea}

Hello, Handmade by Hilani readers, I’m Paula from Sweet Pea. I’m delight to be here today to share an easy Christmas ornament craft that’s sure to please anyone on your shopping list.

Supplies Needed:

Washers

Stamp Kit (I got mine at Harbour Freight.)

Hammer

Black Sharpie

Baby Wipes

E-6000 Glue

Ribbon or Twine

How To:

Start by stamping the washers on a concrete surface. Be sure to buy a few extra washer because you are bound to have a few failed attempts.

One washer at a time, go over the stamping with a black Sharpie.

Immediately wipe clean with a baby wipe. The marker will make your stamped letters pop.

Glue washers together.

After the glue dries, tie on ribbon.

Stamped washer ornaments are quick and easy to make and also inexpensive.

I’m a 7th grade teacher and made a washer ornament for each child in my homeroom to hang on their tree at home. Both the boys and girls can’t wait to take these home.

Fall Decorating

Happy Morning All!

I did it! This post is updated from it's original date, back in August. I completed my Fall Decorating Challenge, see the updates below.

We are in full swing with cool mornings, some leaves changing and shorter days here in Colorado.

So, I've decided to challenge myself to decorate for Fall this week. I'm learning things take longer to do now, and if I wish to add new pieces to my fall Decorations, I should start sooner. These new pieces are handmade, creative, and yummy. I'm finding inspiration from my Autumn Pinterest board.

I'm sharing three with you today hoping to inspire you, and to also hold me accountable for bringing them to life.

So Pinterest, a wonderful place that supports and promotes the hoarding of household items like pickle jars, cereal boxes and toilet paper rolls. So, it shouldn't be a surprise that I'm now collecting Empty Milk Containers for one of my Fall Projects.

Though I originally went to school for Nursing, I ended up staying home with my sweet (crazy) kids and opened up my awesome business Evey's Creations. My family is gluten-free and my middle child who has Asperger's also has severe food allergies, so here at Evey's Creations, we strive to provide allergen-safe, all natural products for our clients. I also love to craft and sew! ANYWAY, here is my tutorial and recipe for these sweet Apple Pie Pops!

Here's what you'll need:

1. Lollipop sticks (I like the Wilton brand).

2. Pie dough (You can make your own or you can buy the frozen kind)

3. A circle cookie cutter about 3 or 4 inches in diameter (I actually used the ring of a small mason jar)

4. A small heart-shaped cookie cutter for your vent.

5. Extra flour to dust on surface while rolling dough out!

6. Apple pie filling (PRE-COOKED- See recipe below.)

7. Optional-Cinnamon Sugar. (one part Cinnamon to two parts Sugar, mixed in a bowl.)

Method:

Step One: Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Roll out your dough and cut out equal rounds, cutting out heart vent in only half of the rounds.

Step Two: Arrange your rounds on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. I like to maximize space by alternating the direction they lie in. Fill with pre-cooked apple pie filling**. Place tops and vents on filled pops. Make sure the hears are slightly off center, leaving a vent hole or your pops will leak out due to heat and pressure. (Trust me, it ain't pretty!)

Step Three: Seal those pie pops up! Use a small fork to crimp the edges. It looks pretty and seals the edges!

Step four: Sprinkle some cinnamon sugar over the top of the pop. I like to put more on the heart cutout to accent it. :) Place pops in oven at 375 degrees and bake for roughly around 15minutes or until edges are slightly browned as in below picture. You will see the heart vent puff up as well.

Allow pops to fully cool before standing up or the stick will break through warm dough. I sold this batch at a vendor sale and displayed them in a sweet mason jar!

Speaking of mason jars...I made a mini pie in a mason jar with leftover dough for my hubby to take to work! You can actually freeze it before it's baked (if your dough is home-made) and simply allow it to thaw then bake it at 375 degrees F in a water bath when you are ready to serve it!

SO CUTE, RIGHT?!

Apple Pie Filling:

3 Large Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored and cubed.

1/4 C Brown Sugar

1/4tsp Cinnamon powder

pinch of freshly ground nutmeg

3tbsp flour

Method:

Combine ingredients in a deep saucepan and cook over the stove top on Low for about 25 minutes or until apples are slightly tender.
