I joined the bag of the month club because I like to make bags. And $35 for 6 bag patterns is a steal. It is the fourth month and I have only made one of the bags :-/ ... Anna from Noodlehead is the designer of the Campfire Messenger Bag. I actually made it before it came out (March) to test the pattern for her. I love it though!! It still needs snaps. And I need to get that done asap in order to use it this summer. I think it is the perfect size, not too big and not too small. And it has an over the shoulder strap which is a MUST for me for an everyday purse!

I loooove to make bags. And I love anything miniature. And I love this mini toddler backpack! The pattern is Made by Rae and can be found here. It is a quick sew, completed in an afternoon, including cutting and interfacing.

pi day

So in my effort to start to have a more handmade wardrobe for B and me, pi day of the century inspired me to make a couple of things for B. It is more of a little to no sew project but it was just the thing to get me motivated!

pi day is March 14 (3.14) and this year it is pi day of the century, March 14, 2015 (3.1415). And at 9:26 to be exact (3.1415926).

I made a quick and simple t shirt and a belt for B to wear for the occasion. The t shirt is a no sew since I just bought a $2 shirt to decorate and the belt just needed 2 quick stitches.

For the t shirt, I used the negative space from number stickers and some fabric paint. Using the stickers makes a fast and cheap stencil.

1. wash t shirt
2. plan your design, use a ruler to make words/numbers straight
3. cut around stickers and place the "negative" space of the stickers on the t shirt

4. use tape to block out spaces in between stickers to protect the t shirt from getting paint where you don't want it.
5. using a sponge brush, dab fabric paint onto the t shirt ... use an up and down dabbing motion, not a back and forth swiping motion to prevent paint getting underneath the stickers/stencil. this will also prevent visible brush strokes.
6. let the paint dry and peal off the stickers. iron over design to set the fabric paint.
7. wear!

I started the number on the front of the t shirt and then wrapped it around the back...

For the belt, I didn't take any pictures of the process. It is just a simple cotton webbing belt made by threading 2 d-rings on one end and sew in place using a zigzag stitch and fold the other end back a half inch and sew in place, again, with a zigzag stitch, to have a nice finished end.

For the numbers, I just wrote on the cotton webbing with Sharpie. That is it!

mom's super tote

For my mom's birthday, I made her a Super Tote. I knew I wanted to make it mostly, if not all black. I found this Andover Fabric, Downton Abbey fabric, black on black design. I love it! And my mom and I love the show! So, perfect fabric to use! However, I could not find a black that matched to use with the Downton Abbey fabric. Most of the solid blacks were too blue and totally clashed. Well, then I thought I could use leather. Yeah! Leather! That would be awesome! ... or a total fail! (sewing leather can be scary!) I looked in my leather stash and I had some black I could use. Here goes nothing.....

And I LOVE how it turned out!

And the black went along great with my fabric.

All the leather I use is recycled leather jackets from Good Will. I've scored a couple of different colors at around $15 a coat. Look for men's jackets, long men's jackets or long women's jackets to get the most leather. If they are older they tend to be softer, worn in leather.... which I think is the best.

Anyways.... here are some pictures.

I inserted a zipper instead of a snap for the outside pocket. I plan to do this on my next super tote too (a gift for our nanny).

I also did not top stitch the leather. It gets pretty thick on to with all the folded layers.

I still used interfacing on the leather as the pattern suggests. The leather was still pretty thin and I wanted to give it more structure.

On the other side I used some leather to make a trim detail.

Blocks make good bag weights to make pictures! :)

I am super happy that the leather turned out the way I envisioned!

I attended another class by Anna from Noodlehead at a local quilt shop! My cousin, Molly, also was able to attend. We had a great time making Anna's Super Tote!

It was hard to pick out fabrics for this one. There are so many great fabrics out there and I love them all but I'm very happy with both of our fabric choices! Molly's is the gray/turquoise floral and mine is the rainbow chevron/green polka dots. They are both so fun!

pom pom necklace

I was teaching my preschoolers about the letter Y and had planned some projects to do with them with yarn. One of those projects was pom poms! So I made a few too and strung them up and wore them as a necklace. I love the muted rainbow! I also made a headband with just three pom poms strung together (no photos of the headband :-/ )

To add to the playday frock that I made for a birthday gift I also made a pair of crayon bags. one for the birthday girl and one for her sister.

I found the pattern again in One-Yard Wonders.

I made a few changes to the pattern::
- two inches taller
- simple pocket inside
-crayon holder on one side only

I also added a monogram with felt on each bag.

I used all of the fabric from my stash! I was glad to use some of it up to make room for more ;) And I love the bright colors together!

playday frock :: pattern from one-yard wonders

I made this little dress for a sweet little girl who just turned one. This is the second time making this dress and it is a super simple sew. (Find the first here.) I added a few changes and sewed it up using French seams.

The pattern is in One-Yard Wonders. Your can find it at Barnes and Noble here. I was browsing my patterns to find some gifts to make and this was perfect!

The fabric I choose is from Hobby Lobby. I just love it! You may have seen it before in my other projects. (I bought the whole bolt!! :))

Added a sweet little polka dot fabric to the top of the pockets to break up the pattern a bit.

And a tag in the same polka dot.

I. Love. French. Seams. I have been using them on everything! It looks so professional and no raw edges!

I hope you are not bored seeing all the same bag over and over ..... I have a pattern addiction. I can not just make one of something!

Here is another Cargo Duffle! This time for me!!! :)

The pattern is from Noodlehead for Robert Kaufman Fabrics. Head here to get the deets and link through for the FREE pattern!

All fabrics are from Michael Miller's Waterfront Park collection. (except the lining.) There was a sample at my local quilt shop using these fabrics and I knew I wanted to make mine with the same!

I added a lining again with some simple pockets.

The fabric was easy to quilt and keep the lines straight since I followed the lines of the fabric.

I still need to add snaps. I am waiting to get these ones from Joann's. I love the hexagon shape!

Manicure Wallet :: pattern by Noodlehead

Anna from Noodlehead let me test her new pattern for Robert Koffman! A Manicure Wallet! It was super fun to make! There is a place for 4 bottles of nail polish and a zipper compartment to hold clippers, files and such. This would be a great gift for your polish obsessed (?!?!) friends. A great gift for your bridesmaids. And an awesome way to travel with your nail polish to keep your nails in tip top shape on your trips this summer.

And read about it on Noodlehead here. It will lead you to the pattern. It is free! (Awesome!!!)

For my wallet I used a fabric I found at Hobby Lobby a few years ago. I bought the rest of the bolt. I just love it! And a medley of polka dot fabric for the compartments inside. I also used the same fabric for the exterior as I did the lining.

In lieu of batting or fusible fleece I used a piece of cheapo felt. I use felt sometimes instead of batting or if the pattern calls for heavy interfacing. It helps keep the cost down on some projects. Fabric, interfacing and batting can really add up!!

I also straight lined quilted the exterior at a 45 degree angle.

I used a strip of 4 inch Velcro in place of the two snaps. Worked out great. Next time I will place the Velcro closer to the edge of the top flap. When it is closed the flap sticks up a little.

diy fridge mats

I've had this idea in the back of my mind for a while now and I finally got around to complete the project! First, our fridge needed a major cleaning! Spilt dried up milk under the drawer, sticky syrup in the door. It was bad! Second, I wanted to get shelf liner type things made specifically for refrigerators. Well, I'm a do it yourself kind of person who is very frugal at times and I didn't want to spend a lot on specialty fridge liners. Next best thing? $2 Target plastic place mats! They are easy to wash, can be removed from your shelves for a deep cleaning if necessary and can be cut with a scissors or utility knife to fit your fridge! Oh, and they were only two dollars a piece!

First I purged expired items, threw out old leftovers and scrubbed down the fridge using a vinegar/water/dish soap mixture.

Then I cut (I used a utility knife and a straight edge, but scissors work well too) and placed the place mats on the shelves, using only a few pieces of rolled tape underneath to keep them from sliding. It turns out I only had to cut off about half an inch to be able to fit the width of my fridge, the place mats fit perfectly depth wise.

As you can see I made the place mats to fit past the shelves to have extra protection from spills dripping down onto the shelf below.

PLEASE NOTE: I have a side by side refrigerator, which is way the place mats were near perfect size. If you have a full width refrigerator you could still use place mats but you would most likely have to use two or more place to cover one shelf, and there would be a seam where the place mats would meet.

I organized the door shelves too but I did not put place mats in them. I do have two extra (I bought six) so maybe if I get to them!

(Blue bin below is for snacks and washed/cut fruit and veggies placed into bags for easy grab and go. Bin is from The Dollar Tree.)

Now the fridge is a colorful happy place! And hopefully it will stay an organized, colorful happy place! :)

Another Cargo Duffle! (Pattern from Noodlehead.)This one went a lot smoother than my first. I worked out the kinks with the first and now with the second I knew the pattern and what I was doing. Oh, they are so fun!

This one is going to a little boy who just turned two! Not a very exciting present for a two year old but it is something he can use for years to come. And it was an excuse to make another duffle!

For the pockets I decided to put some Velcro instead of snaps, easier for little hands.

And added a lining. Love the lining idea! (Find lining tutorial here.)It covers all of my not so good to look at sewing lines. Top side looks good, inside (canvas side) looks bad. I just hand sewed it in.

... there may be more to come. Working on one for myself now! :)

cargo duffle

Have you made Noodlehead's Cargo Duffle yet? You should! I'm on my third one now! I love it! It does take some time to make but after you are done you'll want to make another! :)

I made my first one at a class Anna was teaching at my local quilt shop. It was so nice to have her there to ask her questions, get advice, and for her support. So fun! And I had all day to focus on making and completing a project without household interruptions (dirty dishes, laundry, sweep the floors.....).

I made this one for B. It is the perfect size for a night or weekend away at Grandma and Grandpa's!

I found the state fabric at Hobby Lobby. I love it! I was brushing up on my capitals while making it! I found the navy and red pocket fabric at Hancock Fabrics.

More duffles to come......

i'm back!

Well hello there!

It has been a while, a long while. I stopped blogging over a year ago. It was not intentional to stop blogging but life got busy and exhausting and it was put on the back burner. Here is a short little story ....

My last post was about about 17 months, and a lot has happened in those 17 months!

In November of 2012 I started a little project. My husband and I found out that we were expecting our first child. And I jumped right into this crochet blanket for the little one. Choosing gender neutral colors because we wanted to wait until the birth date to find out. (More about the blanket later.) Then life got busy preparing for the newest member of our family to arrive. Doctors appointments. Teaching. Searching and searching for a house we wanted to buy and move in before the due date in July 2013. And everything became a little exhausting and I didn't have the time or energy to blog. I did manage to make a few projects during that time though :). By this time the blanket I was working on was only about a 12 inches, just working on it here and there.

In April 2013 we finally found a house! We signed the papers and got the keys on the 12th. After painting and putting in new floors and other minor repairs (as me as a supervisor:)) we were going to move the last of our stuff into the new place before the first of May since our lease on our apartment was up.

On April 26th my husband and I went in for a routine doctors appointment. They determined that I was at risk for early labor and ordered me to bed rest in the hospital that day. So as I lay in bed family and friends packed up our things and hauled them over to our new place. So grateful for them!

Since I was bound to my hospital room I had plenty of time to finish that blanket! And I got about three quarters way done and then ran our of yarn! The yarn had to be ordered because the store was out. While waiting for the yarn to arrive I was sent home to spend the rest of my pregnancy at home. Well, seven days later our little boy B joined the world seven weeks early. He had to spend 3 weeks in the hospital and is now a perfectly healthy growing boy!

After adjusting to our new life I finally finished the blanket!

Whew! That took longer to say than expected! Thanks for sticking around! Now for some pics....

The pattern is a simple wave. Increasing stitches at the "peak" and decreasing stitches at the "valleys."

The yarn is I Love that Yarn and was purchased at Hobby Lobby.

After finishing the blanket, I made a plan to start blogging again, taking better pictures by learning how to use my camera, sew more, and learn new crafts along with a few other things. So, thanks for reading! I'm excited about what the future brings! :)

chapstick holder keychain

Always loosing your chapstick? Time to make a chapstick holder keychain!! Keep your chapstick on your key ring and you will always have some handy... unless you loose your keys ;).

The dimentions used are for a regular size chapstick tube.
What you need:
- two 7x2 pieces of fabric {look through your scrap pile!}
- one 7x2 piece of lightweight iron on interfacing
- one grommet
- basic sewing supplies

Iron on the interfacing to one of the 7x2 pieces of fabric.

With right sides together, sew around all four edges leaving a gap for turning. Use the edge of your sewing foot as a guide for the seam allowance. {it is about 7/16th of an inch}

Clip corners.

Turn, press, and top stitch one of the short ends.

Fold the top stitched end up 2.5 inches and pin like so...

Starting at the bottom, top stitch up one side, across the top and down the other side. Stay close to the edge but make sure that you are sewing through all the layers...

See stiched sides here....

Check to make sure your chapstick fits and make adjustments if nessesary.

At the top, mark where to put the grommet, cut the hole and attach the grommet.

I put a little super glue {or you can use fray check} around the cut edges of the hole to prevent fraying and wear and tear. I use super glue because it is cheaper and you can get two small bottles of it for a dollar at the dollar store!

Attach a key ring.

All finished!

Easy, little project! These would be great gifts and stocking stuffers for friends and family!

tiered plate stand

Here is a project that I completed this past summer. Rummaging at Goodwill I came across some plates and candle holders to make a tiered plate stand.

The supplies for this project were very inexpensive. The plates and the candle holders were less than a dollar a piece.

I used a two part epoxy to bond the pieces together.

I chose three different dish sizes. The largest one is a shallow bowl. They all have a scalloped edge. One silver details and one gold.It was fun to go through the plates at Goodwill. I saw a lot of fun designs but I chose simple, white designs to make it more versaltile.

The candle holders were brass. A tall one for the bottom and a shorter one for the top.

{excuse my unfinished project in the background :)}

I used the epoxy to bond the candle holders to the large and medium dishes first. I allowed them to dry.

Glued the the rest together...

Use for treats...

jewelry organizer...

tea? :-D

It is currently in my sewing room to hold and organize thread, buttons, etc.

Keep an eye out for fun plates at thrift stores, rummage sales, or even your own old plates to make your own!

bias tape maker

Every time I am at the craft store I linger by this bias tape maker thinking that it would make my life easier since I struggle when it comes to making bias tape. I really don't enjoy it.

If I need a lot I usually just buy it and it never comes in fun colors and patterns. Then I was at Walmart {our Walmart has a pretty awesome craft section!} and found it on clearance for $30!!!!

It took me half a second to snatch it up. Usually I have seen them go for $60+! So it must have been fate.

Now it is so fun to make bias tape. So easy and fast with this little gadget!

Dana from Made has a wonderful, easy to follow tutorial for these simple skirts for girls. {For full tutorial go to Made.} I made a few for my friend's daughter's birthday. Once you start you cannot stop making them! And they are quick and don't take that much fabric!

Perfect gift for a little girl!

Pair them with some biker shorts or leggings and they can be worn all year.

Super fun to cordinate fabrics and trims!

I also made this "Playday Frock" dress from One Yard Wonders. The pattern was designed by Rachel Knoblich. Again, easy to make and takes less than one yard of fabric!

Hello blog friends!
I know. It has been a while. Life got a little busy around here. My new teaching position is going so great! I have been really focusing on my job these past two months. I have still been crafting! But writing posts have been put on the back burner. I have even had some projects go out the door to family and friends without taking pictures of them! Oops! I do have a couple of posts lined up to show you my projects these past few months!

One project I have been dying to share is a wedding gift for my cousin that got married in August. Between finishing the project, mailing the package, complications with the post office, and then mailing the package again, it has finally arrived at their house and I get to post about it!

I wanted to do something personal for their gift. I have had this tree idea in my head and I just needed to execute it somehow. I decided to make an embroidered picture to hang in their home. A tree with their initials and their wedding date inside a heart....

I first traced the tree on some paper to get an idea of what it would look like. Then I transfered it onto some fabric with a pencil. Then I got to embroidering!

I haven't embroidered anything in a long time and it was fun to get back to it!

I wrapped the fabric around the glass of the frame and popped it in a wooden frame.

It is the first day of school tomorrow! Doing some last minute preparations...

Inspired by Pinterest I made these for my students. A fun treat to take home after the first day of school!

Here is a PDF of the printout. Included is preschooler through sixth grader and a separate link for middle schooler. Just print on cardstock the grade you need, cut around the border and fold in half. Fill a snack size bag with Goldfish crackers and insert the top of the bag inside the fold and staple.

back 2 school

Hello friends!

It has been a while since I posted anything! :-/ It has gotten a little busy in my life and posting got pushed to the side for a while.

What have I been doing?? Well, weekend trips, wedding projects, summer fun, camping, and preparing for my new job starting in a few weeks! I will be teaching four-year-old kindergarten this fall and I am very excited! :-D

So, I have been on Pinterest to get some classroom ideas and I knew I wanted to make this...

I started out with a cardboard ring (hot glued two together to make it more sturdy), then wrapped it in red scrap fabric that I had.

Started gluing crayons on with hot glue.

And added ribbon and a bow!

DIY symbol pillow

Pillows are an easy way to change the decor of your room. I like to have pillow inserts and then make covers for them and make new ones and change them out for a whole new look. They are easy and inexpensive to make.

A trend I have seen lately is to use letters, munbers and symbols in decorating. For this project I choose to make a pillow with a "&" symbol on it.

Using the freezer paper "screen printing" technique I created my own print on fabric and created a pillow cover.

You will need...

- fabric {pre washed}

- pillow {mine was 18x18}

- fabric paint

- sponge brush

- freezer paper

- exacto knife, iron, sewing supplies

Trace a large letter, number, and symbol on freezer paper.

Use an exacto knife and cut around the symbol and iron onto the fabric {shiny side down}.

Paint and let dry.

Peel off freezer paper and iron to heat set the paint.

For a 18x18 pillow, cut a 20x20 square with your printed fabric. I off centered my symbol.

Then cut two other pieces of fabric for the back of the pillow. One 20x13 inches and one 20x16 inches.

Double fold and sew a hem one 20 inch side on each piece.

Place your front of the pillow fabric right side up.

Place your smaller back pannel right side down on top of the front. Line up the edges and corners.

Place the larger piece on top. Line up the edges and corners on the other side.

Pin and sew all the way around with a 1/4 to 1/2 seam.

Turn inside out and insert pillow!

After I sewed around I serged each edge to prevent fraying. You could zig zag if you don't have a serger.

Easy cover to update some pillows!

Try monogram letters, a lucky number, @, #, heart, or peace sign!

Recently I was over at Lines Across to share a little project in the Craft Stash Bash. Here is the tutorial for the fabric scrap coasters I made.

Hello! I'm Stacy from handmade by stacy vaughn. I am so excited to be posting in the Craft Stash Bash here at Lines Across! Thank you Rachel for the opportunity!

One thing you should know about me is that I am kind of a fabric hoarder. I love buying fabric and I have a huge stash that needs to be used up. I also save my scraps. Even the little tiny scraps that probably couldn't be used. But I can't just throw them away! So I have boxes of fabric scraps. What should be done with them????

How about some fabric scrap coasters?

Ready to use up some scraps?
Lets get started!

Gather your supplies...

Cut your scraps in strips so they are easier to work with. You will be wrapping the fabric around the rope and then coiling the rope into a circle to make the coaster.

Start at one end of the rope. Using glue wrap a piece of fabric around the end...

Add more fabric by gluing and wrapping.

Start to form the coaster by gluing the end and coiling...

Add more fabric and coil until you reach your desired size.

You can even use your tiniest scraps...

Once you have it to the size you want, finish the end by wrapping fabric around the end just like you did in the beginning...

Finish covering any remaining rope.

Glue the end down.

You now have a scrappy coaster!

Repeat to make a set!

Fabric scrap strips also make a fun ribbon for packaging!

Customize to fit your color scheme and style.

Makes and easy, inexpensive gift!

Make them as small or as big as you like.

Try using ribbon scraps too!

Protect your coffee table with style. :)

Here is a simple fabric rose that you can use to embelish items in your wardrobe. Attatch them to a purse or bag, hair tie or hair pin, or make it into a pin and pin it to jazz up a shirt.

They are quick to make and can be made in any fabric. I used a red poly satin fabric for these roses. They are going to be attached to some clutch purses that I made.

You will need...

- long strip of fabric

- glue gun and glue

- sewing supplies

- safety pin

What you do...

Cut your fabric into a long {one yard or so, the longer the strip the bigger the flower} narrow strip, about 1.5 - 2 inches. {My in the picture is A LOT shorter than the fabric I used for the final flower.}

Fold strip in half with right sides together and sew along one side.

Pin a safety pin to one end to help turn the fabric right side out to form a tube.

Shown right side out...

Take one end of the tube and start forming the flower by rolling up the fabric using hot glue.

Twist the fabric, glue, roll. Repeat. Twisting the fabric gives the flower more texture. It doesn't matter wich way you twist it, I do both ways to give it more texture. Keep doing this with the entire length of the fabric.

When you get to the end of the fabric tuck it under and glue the end to the back side of the flower.

If you are adding a pin or hair piece to the back you can add a piece of felt cut to the size of the flower to the back to cover up the ends.

Super simple way to add to your accessories or wardrobe!

They can make them any size, just shorten your fabric to make a smaller one or use an extra long strip to make a large flower. Strips of fabric can also be sewn together to make a longer one.
