Motorola Android 2.0 on BGR

Over the weekend we posted some shots that we found regarding the Android 2.0 operating system that BGR managed to get their hands on. Just a day before that BGR also made a quick video showing HELLOMOTODROID which looks to be exactly the same phone.
Now BGR have shown us some full pictures of the phone including a number of angles showing us exactly what it will look like. The phone as mentioned, will run Android 2.0 (which from what I have read looks amazing) and will be slightly thicker than the iPhone 3GS. It is described as the thinnest QWERTY slider phone ever mad. It runs a fast processor and has a nice sized capacitive touch-screen for input.
The keyboard is described as being very usable although apparently it isn’t the final keyboard that will be used. Another unique feature is the docking station that you get with the phone. When sitting it next to your PC the phone tuens in to a multimedia station to present weather information along with time and other various details that you might want to know.
Overall the phone has been described as being quite amazing by BGR. Take a look over their gallery to see exactly what the phone will look like and what you get.

Motorola Announced The Motorola Barrage

Motorola and Verizon today announced the Motorola Barrage. An IPX7 water ingress protection model withstanding 30 minutes submerged in one meter of water.
It is not often we see a new rough phone announced these days. Most new releases are designer deviced with touch screens.
The Nokia 5210 and Ericsson R310 are classics in this segment but these models are no longer available. It has been tough times for Motorola’s mobile division lately. Nice to see them back in business again. I can't recall seeing a rough clamshell before. The Barrage might be the first.
The Barrage specifications won't blow you out of your chair. But that is not the reason why you would buy this phone anyway.

15 Battery Saving Tips For The iPhone 3Gs

Let’s face it, despite the welcome improvements in hardware and software, the new iPhone 3GS still suffers from the same problem that all its predecessors had – battery life is terrible.

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve compiled a list of 15 ways that you can keep your iPhone 3GS juiced up.

Turn off WiFi – Saves power when not searching and staying connected to a wireless connection. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Switch Off.
Turn off Bluetooth – Similar to switching off Wi-Fi you can get more time by turning this feature off. Go to Settings > General > Bluetooth > Switch Off.
Turn off Vibrate Alert - Audio alerts take up less power than a vibration alert. Go to Settings > Sounds > Switch off Silent Vibrate and Switch off Vibrate Ring. You can also flick the Ring/Silent switch on the side of the iPhone.
Turn Off iPod Equalizer – This was an old tip from Apple when they were helping users conserve battery on iPods. Go to Settings > iPod > EQ > Switch Off
Get an iPhone Car / Vehicle Charger - Re-energise your iPhone while you’re driving. Normal charge time via one of these adapters is from 30 – 40 minutes.
Get a iPhone Battery Extender – There are a couple of gadgets out there that allow you to add a battery extender to your iPhone. The negative impact is that it adds extra bulk.
Turn off Location Services / GPS – When switched on quite the juice drainer as it employs a combination of Wi-Fi, cellular and GPS to determine your location. Go to Settings > General > Location Services > Switch Off.
Cut down telephone calls – Only answer the important ones and let the rest go to your voicemail so you can check later.
Reduce Game time - Stop playing Paper Toss and Blowfish – save that battery power!
Reduce Screen / Display Brightness – One that I only recently implemented that has given me more time with my iPhone everyday. Go to Settings > Brightness > use slider to select lower brightness. Also switch Auto-Brightness off.
Activate display of battery percentage - Keep close tabs on how much battery power you actually have left and display this permanently on your screen. Go to Settings > General > Usage > Battery Percentage > Switch On.
Check mail less frequently – Increasing the intervals your iPhone fetches emails or doing it manually fewer times a day can also help battery life. Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data > Turn off Push and set to Manually.
Activate Auto-Lock with short interval – This feature dims your iPhone screen after a selected period of time of inactivity. The shorter the interval the faster it will put your iPhone to sleep and initiate auto-lock. Go to Settings > General > Auto-Lock > 1 Minute.
Turn off 3G - Although you won’t be able to download data as quickly this saves you a substantial amount of power. Go to Settings > General > Network > Enable 3G > Switch Off.
Turn off Data Roaming – Turn data roaming off when abroad especially, to avoid substantial roaming charges when using email, MMS, web browsing and other data services. Saves battery and money! Go to Settings > General > Network > Data Roaming > Switch Off.

In the consumer gadget marketplace, fierce competition breeds great products. And nowhere has that been more evident than in the world of mobile phones. Ever since the iPhone made companies rethink the role phones play in the lives of consumers, we’ve seen a flood of models looking to replicate Apple’s success. One of those phones was the T-Mobile G1, a touch screen slider powered by Google’s new Android phone operating system. And while it brought some widely praised innovations to the market, many felt the phone was not refined enough to do battle with the other touchscreen mobile devices now going for the throne. To give it another go, T-Mobile (and manufacturer HTC) went back to the lab and came back with the more responsive, more attractive and better featured myTouch 3G.

HARDWARE :
Consumers who couldn’t commit to the iPhone because of its lack of a real keyboard, loved that G1 incorporated one without doing away with the touchscreen. However, leaving in the keyboard made for an exceptionally fat handset. To get the myTouch 3G down in size, they did away with the conventional keyboard and went with a virtual QWERTY keyboard that automatically goes from portrait to landscape mode depending on the application and orientation of the phone. This all together makes for a much slimmer package. The keyboard isn’t as functional as the old one, but after an hour with it, we were breezing through typing. Even with the slim new frame, we expected some internal storage, instead we got a 4 GB microSD card to store songs and videos on. Not bad, but not great. Also not great is the lack of a traditional 3.5″ headphone slot, making it so you have no choice but to use the headphones included with the phone. However, what is great, is the inclusion of WiFi to go along with support for T-Mobiles 3G network allowing you to quickly download web pages and songs from Amazon’s MP3 store.

TOUCH SCREEN :
A popular complaint with the G1 was the responsiveness of the touchscreen, or lack thereof. Scrolling through lists was made difficult as you had to flick the same spot over and over again to just get a response. This time around, the screen feels more high grade: less like plastic, more like some sort of glass, and the difference is like night and day. In addition to the screen, you can also navigate using the trackball located between the “talk” and “end” keys. We found this to be useful when reading a lot of text on a website like the NYTimes, or Complex.com.

SOFTWARE :
The myTouch 3G runs the latest version of Google’s Android operating system, code named “Cupcake.” Cosmetically, not much has changed (the icons and overall appearance appears to be fresher), but take a little time running through the different screens and built in applications and you’ll notice how everything moves much more smoothly. Also made simpler (one click) is the ability to upload your photos to Picasa and videos to YouTube. You still have the endlessly useful multi-desktop feature that allows you to have your apps divided among multiple screens. The biggest add on is the aforementioned virtual keyboard that opens up with every edit box. On top of that, you still get the awesome ability to simultaneously run more than one program at any given time, and the option to customize the look of almost any and everything in the phone—icons, wallpapers, menu’s, etc.

And just because they did away with the physical keyboard doesn’t mean T-Mobile is any less serious about the myTouch being a true communications beast. You can set up email with just about any type of POP3 (most web based emails) or IMAP email systems, as well as full synchronization with all of Google’s services: Calendar, GMail and Google Talk. If AOL’s AIM is more your flavor you can set that up, too, along with Yahoo! Messenger and Windows Live Messenger.

LG Chocolate BL40 Dual-Interface

From July 2009 a new ago, Motorola has a teaser for the latest mobile phones in the line of dark chocolate-label series, the most popular fashion phone from LG. Last Black Label phone allows BL40. At this time, Motorola has a leak on the design of BL40, but only a picture of part of the phone. Nevertheless, the table is interesting enough people, particularly mobile observers and fans of Sony Ericsson mobile phones in particular. The pictures are of them are as below.

Rumors circulated after it was expected that something BL40 specification as follows: HSDPA, a screen with 21:9 aspect ratio and resolution of 800 x 345 pixels, something new for the size of the phone and 5-megapixel camera.

Then end of July, Motorola has released the complete images of BL40 officially, but the description is not given. Even so, rumors and predictions that the growth of BL40 is a touch screen interface with the S-class, very big is 4 inches with a 21:9 aspect ratio and resolution of 800 x 345 pixels, the thickness of only 10.9 mm , 5-megapixel camera auto-focus camera with LED flash, Wi-Fi, GPS and 3G/HSDPA.

Another interesting rumor is that BL40 is a new feature of the dual-interface screen display 2 in 1 activity can display simultaneously.

Nokia N900 Wins Nokia 2009 Popularity Contest

STUTTGART, Germany – Following all the exciting announcements last week and in the run up to Nokia World 09 Nokia asked the surfers to vote for their favorite product, and received a record number of votes – 2,670 of them.

Stealing the spotlight with the lion's share of the vote is the Nokia N900. Nokia's debut Linux-based Maemo 5 device earned 1,804 votes, giving it a staggering 68%.

In second place, with 15% of the vote, is the Nokia Booklet 3G. The mini laptop PC stunned many when it was first unveiled, and it’s full specs list has triggered a wealth of interest, excitement and controversy. It earned my vote, but couldn’t compete with the popularity sparked by its smaller N900 sibling.

Third on the podium, and close behind the Booklet, is the new Nokia X6 entertainment phone with 11% of the vote. The flagship X series device (the first device to replace the XpressMusic range), the new X6 was a keenly discussed favorite on the show floor at Nokia World 09.

Congratulations, iPhone, you can finally join the cell phone family. AT&T announced Thursday that the long-awaited multimedia messaging would arrive on Apple's device in the United States starting September 25. The iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G will support the service, but owners of the original iPhone will miss out since that handset lacks the proper radio.

In its brief statement, AT&T offered few reasons why it's taken so long to get such a basic cell phone feature. It only said MMS "required us to work on our network MMS architecture to carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from Day One."

The carrier also said it appreciates the patience of its customers (it better) and that it knows that many iPhone customers are "eager" (that's putting it mildly) for the MMS rollout. Other iPhone carriers around the world have offered MMS since the 3.0 update went live earlier this year.

On the magic day, you'll need a software update before you can send your first photo to another phone number. As we reported last month, some users have seen the MMS commands on their iPhone after the most recent software update, but they've been unable to use them.

And in case anyone is keeping score, September 25 is three days after autumn officially begins on September 22. At Apple's WWDC in June, a company exec said MMS would come later in the summer. And one more thing: we're still waiting for that promised tethering support.

Nokia Unveils New Mobile

NOKIA kicked off its Nokia World 09 conference with a bang by announcing five new products — the N900, N97 mini, X3, X6 and Booklet 3G — that are guaranteed to whet the appetite of mobile tech enthusiasts.

With the unveiling of these new products, Nokia believes it can change how people connect with each other.

First up is the N900 Smartphone, which runs Maemo 5, a Linux-based operating system. It is powered by an ARM Cortex-A8 600MHz processor and up to 1GB of application memory. This means users can enjoy faster application processing and multitasking on a live Dashboard, Nokia said.

With the N900, users can chat with voice calls, Internet calls, instant messages and SMS. They can also merge phone book, Skype contacts and other contacts into an all-in-one address book. Additionally they can also share their status, location and mood with their friends.

Users can even keep multiple IM and SMS conversations going and move easily between them.

The N900 can also take photos and widescreen videos using the 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics.

Other notable features include a 3.5in touch-sensitive screen, 32GB of on-board storage, a web browser powered by Mozilla technology, integrated GPS with A-GPS and WLAN IEEE 802.11b/g with UPnP support.

Nokia N97 Mini

The N97 mini, which is slightly smaller than the N97 Smartphone, is designed with a social and style-conscious consumer in mind, Nokia said.

This gadget features a 3.2-in touch display, 8GB on-board memory, Qwerty keyboard and a Customizable Home screen.

A new feature called “life casting” will premiere on the N97 mini. Here, Nokia has partnered with Facebook to integrate the social networking service into its mobile phone.

With life casting users can publish their location and status updates directly to their Facebook account from the home screen of the mobile device.

The N97 mini also comes with Ovi Maps, which makes searching, finding and navigating easy. Users can access premium content from Lonely Planet, Michelin and Wcities, thus turning the N97 mini into what the company claims is the world’s smallest travel companion.

Additionally, users can personalise the home screen of the N97 mini with different applications and services available from the Ovi Store.

Nokia Music Lovers X3

The X3 is designed for music lovers and is the first Series 40 Ovi Store-enabled device. On the surface, the X3 is a sleek and compact music device that comes with stereo speakers, built-in FM radio and a 3.2-megapixel camera.

As for the X6, it is an entertainment device that is capable of playing up to 35 hours of music. It offers up to 32GB of on-board memory with a 3.2-in finger touch interface. The X6 has a 16:9 widescreen optimised for photos, videos and browsing.

To make the most of the entertainment experience, Nokia also introduced the Nokia Mini Speaker MD-9, which is a pocket-size speaker and the Nokia Bluetooth Stereo Headset BH-505, an ergonomic and lightweight neckband headset.

Nokia Green is a multi-channel service where people dedicated to a sustainable lifestyle can explore and enjoy the world. Through Green Explorer people can share information, give guidance and communicate about eco-friendly travelling. Eco-Friendly Green Explorer is company's latest eco savvy services that provides information on a range of travel issues including tips on the most sustainable methods of transport, eco-friendly places to visit, and a way to offset the CO2 emissions when one must fly. Here some details on the changes to the previous version.

Green Explorer now has a new Ovi look and feel and you can use your Ovi account to access the service. This is a real improvement since have difficulties with the registration emails.

The Sony Ericsson G502 is a communication, email & internet focused 3G mobile phone. This phone has a solid bar design casing which is available in two stunning colours which include a stylish champagne black coloured casing or a sophisticated brilliant hazel coloured casing. The overall size of the casing makes it easy for the user to carry & handle this compact mobile phone. The Sony Ericsson G502 is 13.5mm deep by 109mm tall by 46mm wide & the handset weighs 83.5 grams including the fitted rechargeable battery. Advantage to iPhone users who's had Facebook Account.

Come to Review.

This is Review Facebook for iPhone 3.0, Facebook for iPhone 3.0 coming soon to the iTunes App Store for iPhone and iPod touch.

When I first installed the app, I was frozen with anticipation. I have seen some sneak peeks on Facebook’s app page, but that was it. Now with it in my hands… Let’s begin by looking at the basics.

Home Screen
Facebook 3.0 has a brand-new redesigned home screen (see above). From here, you have access your fundamental Facebook actions such as your News Feed, Profile, Friends, Inbox, Chat, Requests, Events, Photos, Notes and Search. Notifications have been relocated to a very accessible location on the bottom of the screen that tells you the last notification you have received and the total number of new notifications. Tapping this bar brings up a notification list that is practically identical to the notifications list you have on the Web Browser. You can also tap the title bar at the top of the page to return home any time. For example, if you are commenting on a post and you are done, you can tap the word “Comments” at the top of the page and it will return you to the home screen. Tap again, and it takes you back to your comment. Nice.

New Feed
The News Feed has several new features. For starters you can now “like” posts! Yes, you now have the ability to comment and like a post on Facebook for iPhone (you can also unlike too). You can also add a video (with a 3GS) and record and upload directly to Facebook from your iPhone. If a post has a Web link in it, the link will now open within Facebook to view the Web Page. You no longer have to leave the app to go to Safari, through this is an option if you want.

If you separate your friends and paged into different lists, these have also carried over into Facebook 3.0. You can easily and quick access your News Feed, Links, Pages and more from one spot.

Profile
Your Facebook Profile is now here in it’s entirety! Profile pages are divided into three sections: Wall, Info and Photos. Wall remains relativity unchanged, however, Info gives you a lot of information now. For instance, when viewing another persons profile, you can see how many friends you have in common, their number of total friends and what Pages they are a fan of. Clicking on any of these choices will take you to that list. From their profile you can also send them a message, Poke them and add as a favorite on your home screen! That is right, the home screen can also be customized with your favorite friends or pages!

Friends
This section contains your typical listing of friends, but now if they have their phone number in Facebook, you are given an icon to tap next to their name. When tapped, it will display quick links for their numbers. Example: Land, Mobile, SMS. Very nice if you don’t have every single friend in your address book, this is an excellent replacement! You also have your Pages here too. This is a great, quick way to access the pages you are a fan of.

Inbox
The Inbox remains relatively unchanged except for the added option of Updates for your pages. If a Page uses this feature and you have it activated, you will see your favorite Page updates in the Inbox too under its own section.

Chat
Chat is another section that has not altered too much from Facebook 2.0. One of the new feature is the Online/Idle icons next to your friends so you know their status.

Requests
Not much here, any pending friend requests you have will appear on this button of the home screen with the red badge number of pending requests.

Events
New to Facebook 3.0, events have a simple scrolling list of upcoming and past events. When you tap on an event, you enter your RSVP and see a guest list broken down into Confirmed, Maybe, Declined and Awaiting. Very nice. Do you also enjoy the Birthday feature of Facebook on your desktop that shows you when your friends have a Birthday? Well, Birthdays have been added to Events as well! Click on the Events tab and you have a whole list of your friends Birthdays divided by month.

Photos
Photos in Facebook 3.0 have had a big change. First, when you tap an album, you get a page of thumbnails like the Photos app on the iPhone. This makes it a lot easier to find photos or get an overview of an album. You can now very easily show or hide tags. Previously, it seemed that tags would appear randomly, now it is much easier. You can Like and make a photo a profile picture right from Photos!

Notes
New to the mix of Facebook 3.0 apps is Notes. When you tap on Notes, you get a listing of all of your notes on Facebook. You can edit notes and create new ones. I was curious about the note creation process on the iPhone and decided to enter some basic HTML to format my note, just like on the desktop. Know what? IT WORKED! That is right, you can add basic HTML tags to your notes and it will format the note accordingly. The only thing missing is the ability to attach a photo to your note. This new feature has me debating whether I should bother with my own traditional personal blogging and just blog from within Facebook… we are almost there…

Search
Searching from the home screen gives you a few filters. You can search for Friends, Everyone or Pages. Typing in a name for Friends and Everyone behaves as you would expect, but the new ability to add pages is really awesome. I am using Facebook more and more for product, news and general “fan” updates. This new feature is really convenient.

Posting
Posting has one of my biggest grips addressed from the previous version of Facebook; the “Send” button (renamed to Share) has been moved to the TOP of the screen so I no longer post accidentally while typing!

Add a Favorite
Lastly, from the home screen you can add your favorite friends and pages to the home screen. You can flick to the left just like the iPhone home screen and have quick access to you the people you care about the most.

Issues and Conclusion
This is one phenomenal update to Facebook for iPhone, however, it is not without its shortcomings. To name a few, you receive an error message when you try to play a video that has been uploaded to Facebook. The error reads “Facebook Video cannot yet be played on this device”. Not sure what that means, but it tells me that it will be coming in s future update. If you have posted a YouTube video to Facebook though, it will open YouTube’s site in the Facebook app and you can watch the video.

I have also encountered the infamous ”Error, Your comment could not be posted at this time” message. I had thought this was resolved in the last version of Facebook. I have not seen this error for quite some time.

Overall, I could not be happier. This version of Facebook is leaps and bounds better then version 2.0. The developer, Joe Hewitt, deserves kudos for his work her. Joe has also promised push notifications and other enhancements for 3.1 to be released later this year.

The promise of the iPhone is to have a mobile computer in your pocket. The iPhone is able to deliver on this promise because there are developers out there like Joe Hewitt that keep making apps better and better.
