You can’t say that Ashley Olsen, 23, has retired. But when she wants to get away from her new career as designer for the fashion label The Row she shares with twin sister Mary-Kate, who’s still living the actor’s life, Ashley retires to Montauk. “I like to stay in most of the time, or out on a boat,” she told Hamptons Magazine. “I like secluded places. Montauk ... it’s different. You feel like you’re at the end of the world almost. You actually feel like you went away.” One spot you might catch her out in public is her favorite East End restaurant, The Beacon in Sag Harbor.

Could it be the work of Tea Party sympathizers? The $ sign burned into the synthetic turf of East Hampton High School's football field was, according to a five-page anonymous letter, a protest against the waste of taxpayer money.

Tea Party protests — named for the pre-revolutionary Boston Tea Party — have popped up around the country in the wake of TARPs, auto bailouts and stimulus expenditures that have ballooned the federal deficit. But this $ vandalism may cost taxpayers as much as $100,000 to fix. How much tea would that buy back in 1773?

Southampton, where Howard Stern built a home with his new wife, Beth, followed Old Westbury (up Island) at No. 10.

According to Forbes there have been 1,725 listings in these five Long Island communities over the past three months.

Talk about preaching to the choir!

Artist and Sag Harbor homeowner Eric Fischl will be signing his new book from 6 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 1 at the Rizzoli Bookstore at Empire Gallery, 197 Madison St. in Sag Harbor.

It’s called “Beach Paintings,” and the signing will be accompanied by an exhibit of selected works from the 200 paintings, photographs, watercolors and charcoals featured in the book. Hamptons residents — steeped in beach culture themselves — will surely consider adding the 4-pound tome (Rizzoli, $65) to their beach house coffee tables.
