Secret Santa Swap

A while ago I "met" Amy (@sukie80) on Twitter and she suggested getting involved in a secret santa swap between Twitter friends. I hestitated for a moment as I always take on too many swaps and then stress about getting everything finished in time, but Amy can be very persuasive! Plus this was a swap that didn't have to be handmade and had a strict $15 limit. Gifts didn't have to be made but could also be bought.

To be honest I didn't hesitate for too long! Especially since I am really enjoying the Twitter playground and getting to know my fellow tweeps!

Looks like a little mouse has already started to nibble at the chocolate. It is Advent after all!

Moda Bakeshop Pillow Tutorial

I love the Moda Bakeshop site. It is such a great resource for patterns using those pre-cut fabrics that you just can't resist buying as they look so pretty. Or is that just me? I cannot resist the cuteness of charm packs or layer cakes.

Italian Pizzerias

Yum! This black check print from Reunion by Sweetwater for Moda, just conjures up images of pizzerias to me. You know the ones - where the chef is wearing checkered trousers or a checkered apron. Every time I cut into I think of Hawaiian pizzas, or broccoli and ham.... Is it dinnertime yet!

I just can't get pom pom trims out of my brain either since a certain ginger monkey started popping them in her projects. And I can tell you something - our cat Noodles is also a big fan of pom pom trims *sigh*. As if it wasn't hard enough around here to get some sewing done, add some pom poms and a frenzied cat into the mix and that's it game over. I'll have to wait until Noodles is off stalking mice to get this project finished!

Anyway this is what I am up to today. How about you?

Oh and Heike Pier from the Berlin Modern Quilt Guild has got a project on the Moda Bakeshop today! Yay for Heike!

Pretty Little Pouch Swap

Purses, pouches, bags and wallets have been a lot on my mind recently. All I have wanted to to do is sew up little projects. It is so satisfying to whip up a few small projects and be finished in a day or two! I think the most time consuming part for me is choosing which fabrics to use. Since the projects are small you want to be able to show off your favourite fabric and choose accent fabrics that really make those projects pop! With a large quilt I can choose many different fabrics but for a small project where I only use 1 or 2 fabrics, I find it so hard to choose!

Anyway, to quench my thirst for making small projects I decided to take part in the Pretty Little Pouch Swap. I have to admit I had been stalking this swap for a while and was desperately hoping that the next round would come at a time when I had a few minutes to spare. And thank goodness it did! My partner for the swap was Kelly from KelbySews. This lady is a fabulous sewist and really has an eye for small projects. Just see all the goods she whipped up for the bazaar she took part in! She is also one of the formidable duo that make up the Pretty Little Pouch swap mamas. So I have to admit that I did feel the pressure to come up with something great.

To top it off Kelly has also contributed to Fat Quarterly, (she made some fabulous coasters as part of the Designer Challenge in the Fall Inspired issue) and I wanted to make her something that would really suit her.

So I went online and ordered a whole load of frames for purses and waited....and waited....and waited. And then turned to plan B!

Kelly had also mentioned she was looking for a pouch for her sunglasses. The perfect opportunity to try out some paper piecing. I followed the tutorial on Kerry's blog and was surprised by how much I actually enjoyed it!

And of course sod's law is that when I was about 3/4 of the way finished with the above pouch, the frames that I had ordered arrived. And of course the pouch that I had made did not fit the dimensions of the frames. Grrrrr.....

But since I couldn't wait to give the flex frames a test drive I made another pouch! In fact I made me one as well which I used to look after my passport and boarding pass when I went to Quilt Market!

But of course the best part of the swap was yet to come. I posted off my pouches and trieed to forget that a pouch would be winging its way to me! I tried not to scour the photo pool and guess which was mine as I really love surprises! And I was really very happily surprised when I received this fabulous swap package from Jen (Bettycrockerass).

I "met" Jen years ago on Flickr when she asked if I would print some robots in pink for her daughter's birthday so I had to giggle when I saw the paper she had chosen to wrap the pouch in!

And just look what she embroidered inside! I feel as if Jen is in the pouch and it makes me smile every time I open it up.

I definitely got a great partner in the swap. Thank you so much Jen for making me 2 fabulous pouches and for all the small details which made it perfect just for me.

Now I'm waiting for the next round. How about you? Did you take part in the swap?

What could be a clearer sign that I am a bit overloaded at the minute than the block I made for fellow Hexed-In Bee member Brooke. At first glance there is nothing wrong with this block, but it is COMPLETELY the wrong colour palette.

Here is Brooke's mosaic:

Nothing whatsoever in common. How I could have gone on my merry way and continued stitching this block is a mystery to me. But I have to admit I do quite like it and the colour palette. I reckon I am a bit obsessed with the yellow, blue and grey mix. I will probably make this into a pillow and then have a couple of days to get my brain back in working order!

Fat Quarterly Issue 4 Out Now!

Yep it's finally here, Issue 4 - Solids! This issue is possibly my favourite ever.

Some of the first quilts I ever made were all solids and somehow I got sidetracked by all the gorgeous prints on offer and forgot how I enjoyed working with just solids!

So I was very excited when we decided issue 4 would be all about solids even though I quickly realised how deplete of solids my stash had become! But that's the best thing about solids - you can find them everywhere! I cut up old shirts, bed sheets and tablecloths to make Mr Fox.

So go gather up some of the old clothes, sheets and tablecloths you have hidden away at the back of your wardrobe and get stitching! (Of course you could also go on a shopping trip using some of the coupons in FQ as well!)

I feel a bit naughty including the pattern to Mr Fox in Issue 4 of Fat Quarterly as he started off as an idea for a swap and this particular pillow was stitched up as my Dad's Christmas present.

Mr Fox was destined for a spot in my Dad's office to cosy up the room and to keep an eye on the warehouse! But he never made it that far. He is now parked in my parent's living room, warming himself in front of the fire. I dare say he is a lot more comfy there but now I will have to make another pillow for Dad's office!

Still it was a lot of fun stitching him together and doing all the hand stitching. I thought before I started that it would take forever but it flew by! The only tricky bit about this pattern is keeping track of where all the bits go! I recommend cutting them as you go.

Anyway if you fancy sewing yourself a Mr Fox pillow he will be appearing in Issue 4 out on Januray 27th!

Bee Germany

Even though I had promised myself I wouldn't sign up for any more Bees I just couldn't resist Bee Germany when Johanna asked me to join last year. It is just fantastic to get to know a whole load of quilters who live close enough to visit. And can you believe there are about 5 of us that live in Berlin! I can't wait to meet them although so far all the meet up dates have fallen on a weekend I can't make! Sod's law. I will be there next meet up I promise!

Anyhoo, Amelie just got a new bunk bed, or semi-bunk bed, for her birthday last week, so she is finally in a full size bed. We felt a bit guilty seeing her all curled up in her junior bed!

A bigger bed needs a bigger quilt and you can certainly never have enough quilts in my opinion. So since February is my month for sending out fabric I am very excited to be able to finally put some of my Far Far Away II to good use to make Amelie a quilt. I bought a whole load of this line and haven't had a chance to stroke or admire or dream up possible projects with it. So I decided that the ladies in Bee Germany would be able to help me make a fabulous new quilt using it, especially since Amelie has been re-enacting Sleeping Beauty at her Kita.

The mosaic above is my inspiration for the group. It seems I am quite into stars and circles at the moment! I hadn't realised until I saw the mosaic!

I can't wait to see what they come up with.

It's getting close to the release of Issue 4 of Fat Quarterly!

We are all so excited about this issue. Not only is it a year since we started Fat Quarterly but we also have a number of great designers joining us in this issue!

My sewing machine is normally parked on the dining room table so I have easy access to whip up the odd block whilst my girls are playing. I kept deluding myself that I would put the sewing machine away between uses but it is time to face the fact that it is on the dining room table to stay. And if it is here to stay then it needs a pretty cover.

Time to get back in the saddle with blogging! I don't know where the time goes. I keep thinking I'll post this week and before I knwo it the month has whizzed by.

But I promise to be a better blogger. Honestly! This time there is no crossing my fingers behind my back!

Part of the reason of being absent is all the bees I have been involved in. So much fun but wow does it suck up my extra free time! Still it didn't stop me from signing up for another bee. This time called the Busy Bees as we are all incredibly busy. Not that anyone isn't!

September is my month for sending out fabric so I snipped up pieces of beige, yellow and pink to send out to my fellow busy bees.

Look at this beauty made by Lynne of Lilys Quilts! Love it! THis is going to be a fantastic quilt.

Hexed In

Hey ho it's off to work we go! Or rather, how about resting your weary head on this pillow after a hard day's work!

I've had some scraps of Heather Ross' gnomes hanging around in my stash forever. I wanted to show them off and didn't really know how. And then it struck me - why not frame a gnome in hexes!

"Hexed In" is my first pattern for Fat Quarterly and I think it is a good way to get used to sewing with hexagons.

Fat Quarterly will be available to buy on April 27th! Not long now and the excitement is killing us!

Lucky Me!

Another round of the doll quilt swap is drawing to an end and wow has it been a fabulous round! This was my first time as a swap mama and I have had a great time! I had a super group of bebes. Thanks guys!

I was again really lucky with my partner. Sandy in Buenos Aires sent me this beauty.

So many tiny details in the house and the fantastic stitching! Thank you so much Sandy!

And look what else she sent! A little bag of basted hexagons all ready to be stitched up!

My partner was Barb (aka Quilting Barbie). It was really fun to make a mini quilt for her as I already know her from Bee Inspired and she was the lovely lady who sent me the West Hill horse fabric which I used for Amelie's horse quilt.

Barb wrote in her preferences that she likes gees bend, aqua and tangerine, birds, trees and circles. So I tried to combine these preferences in one quilt.

I started by piecing together blue strips in a wavy way aka gees bend. To add a bit of contrast I inserted little bits of brown. (Tick Gees Bend ;-) )

Then I added some circle borders in aqua and tangerine. (Tick circles ;-) )

I turned the brown inserts into branches and raw edge appliques leaves and birds. (Tick birds, trees ;-) )

It is fantastic when people have preferences as it gives you something solid to work from. Quilters Preference is always so hard to pinpoint a design! The possibilities are endless!

Now just a couple more quilts to chase up and then my group is done! Now just to count the days until the next round!

Quilt Auction for Chile

Two very amazing and special friends of mine, Katy and Brioni, made this quilt together and are now auctioning it off with the proceeds going towards Doctors Without Borders.

This cause is very dear to my heart as my husband is Chilean and we met whilst I was living and working in Santiago. Most of his family still lives in Chile, as do many of our closest friends and they have all been fairly traumatised by the events over the last couple of weeks. There have been over 200 aftershocks since the earthquake with one only yesterday with a strength of 6.9. Everyday we hear more news about more damaged buildings and problems with lack of food and water in the most effected areas. The main roads are all destroyed and reaching some of the people most in need is proving very difficult.

So please dig deep in your pockets and head over to Brioni's blog and leave your bid.

And a huge thank you to Katy and Brioni for doing such a wonderful thing.

I'm Sew Hip!!!

A while ago I sent off a pdf file to the magazine Sew Hip and was blown away when they said they wanted to print the pattern and asked me to send them the quilt for a photo shoot. But then time passed and it began to feel as if it might never happen. So when my Mum phoned me yesterday the last thing I expected her to say was that she had bought a copy (or probably ALL the copies) of the magazine with my quilt in. Thanks Mum. I am a bit sad that I can't go into a newsagents and see it on the stands myself but super excited to see my quilt in print!

In fact not only my quilt but a few circle blocks that I have made as part of my online bees. You might be able to spot them there in the photo!

So now I am grinning like an idiot and off to celebrate with my girls. We will probably be daring and share a packet of smarties!

International Traveller Block Tutorial

March is my month for sending out my fabrics for the bumblebees, part of Bee Europa. Since March is also my birthday month I thought why not use this opportunity to try and get some more of this quilt made!

I am going to ask my fellow bumblebees to make this block.

From what I can see a 4 patch version of this block is called Arkansas Traveller. Well since this is a nine patch variation which I fudged I am going to call it the International Traveller block.

It really isn't as complicated as it seems. I have sent each of them the fabric and templates for the block. But for those of you afraid of templates I also worked out the measurements so you can cut the pieces with your rotary cutter too.

For each block you need to make 9 small blocks.
For each small block (you need 9)

Cut 2 rectangles from black fabric measuring 2" x 2.25"
Cut 2 rectangles of coloured fabric measuring 2" x 4.5"
Cut 1 strip of newspaper fabric measuring 1.5" x 4.5"

Black Fabric

Take one black rectangle and mark a point 0.5" away from the end along one of the 2.25" sides. Mark another point 0.5" away from the opposite end along the opposite 2.25" side. Draw a line connecting the marks and cut along this line.

Repeat for your second black rectangle.

Coloured Fabric

Take a coloured rectangle and draw a mark 0.25" from one end along the 2" side of the rectangle. Mark a point 0.25" from the same end on the opposite 2" side. Draw a line connecting the marks.

Mark a dot 1.25" from the edge along this line on both sides. Draw a line connecting these marks with the bottom corners as shown in the diagram.

Use your ruler to cut 0.25" away from these lines as shown in the diagram.

Sew Together

Make nine of these small blocks and then sew them together to make one large block.

Loopy for Lines

I am always on the lookout for inspiration for quilting. I think it is definitely the area of quilting that I give the least attention. I spend 90% of my time making blocks and piecing tops together. Now I want to try and concentrate more on the quilting and how to get most out of my patchwork designs with the quilting.

I am really digging straight line quilting at the moment. Especially horizontal and vertical lines.

I saw this quilt yesterday from la vida compartida. And I just adore it! The quilt itself is fabulous. The mix of different size rectangles and the splattering of applique circles keeps your eye moving around the quilt. But what is really fantastic is the quilting. All straight lines, but in some sections the lines are horizontal and in others the lines are vertical. In some sections the lines are close together and in other sections the lines are further apart. Genius!!!!!

I am already thinking which quilt I can use this type of quilting design on!!! What is even better with a design like this is that it should be "relatively" easy to quilt a large quilt on my small machine in this way.

Pillow Talk Swap 2

Yayyy, the time has finally arrived for the second round of the Pillow Talk Swap (see link on the sidebar). I love this swap. As much as I love making doll quilts there is only so much wall space to hang them on. Whereas cushions I could cover the whole house in. I have been having fun today pulling out fabrics and trying to work out what would suit my partner the best. This little collection of fabrics I keep coming back to and I think this is what I am going to use. I just hope my partner likes them!

What makes a good pillow / cushion in your opinion? Do you like slip covers, zippers, quilted, non-quilted?

All about the block

I've recently been enjoying making more traditional style blocks. I like improvisation and wonky log cabins a lot but sometimes I can't help feeling that the oldies are the goodies. I think sometimes I am put off making more traditional blocks because they are sometimes more complicated to make. Making sure points match up, or using templates seems much more headache than whipping out a log cabin or a group of half square triangles.

I picked up this book a while ago and I just adore browsing through the blocks and imaging them in different fabric combinations. I feel a new quilt coming on every time I flick through.

So when Vanessa from the Another Quilting Bee group asked for a traditional style star I turned immediately to this book.

I really like how it turned out and can't wait to make more of these type blocks!

Thermofax Printing Equipment

For those of you who have asked how I print my robots here is a quick overview of what you need!

Things you will need for printing:

Squeegee
Old spoons
mixing containers (with lids to store any leftover ink)
SOFT paintbrush
fabric
fabric screenprinting ink

When I had my thermofax screen made I was advised to use the long white squeegee in the photo above. It is a bit like a window squeegee and has a very flexible edge. The thermofax screen can be damaged easily and this squeegee does not exert much pressure on the screen.

However, I found my printing results were hit or miss (to be honest mostly miss) with this squeegee. When I tried with the more standard screen printing squeegee my printing improved about 100 fold! I use mostly the small Speedball brown squeegee.

Surface for printing.

You get better print results when you print on a slightly soft surface. I copied Celestina Carmen (an absolutely must read blog for any wannabe screen printers out there - it is a mine of information and Tina is fabulous and helps you out with any problems!). I bought a wooden board from the diy shop, stretched some batting over and some canvassy fabric over the top and stapled the lot down.

Clean up

You have to be quick when screen printing. If the ink dries in the screen it can block the holes making further printing impossible. Work quickly and efficiently. Have everything to hand and wash up as soon as you are finished.

It is useful to have a packet of baby wipes to hand to make sure you don't transfer ink all over the place. Cover the surroundings with newspaper and make sure you have plenty of space to hang prints to dry.

To wash up a thermofax screen use COLD water only! Hot water will damage the screen. Use a SOFT paintbrush to clean the screen and a few drops of washing up liquid. Then you can use warm water to wash your hands and the squeegee!

To start printing is fairly easy. You don't need too much either. It is not very expensive to get a thermofax screen made. It is easier to get started using these screens than normal screen printing. Craft Chi sells custom made screens on etsy and in Germany you can get them made here.

Next time I print I'll take photos of the process!

Amelie's Horse Quilt

I started this quilt for Amelie last year sometime when she told me she absolutely had to have a horse quilt! I set to work immediately but got somewhat sidetracked!

I made up the blocks as I went along. There are a couple of improvised blocks, a couple of bento box blocks and a couple of other scrappy blocks. It was great fun to make with all my scraps!

The backing comes from an old duvet cover I found in a flea market. It just matched so perfectly the colours in the quilt and is so cheery. To make it fit the quilt I added a couple of rows of half square triangles. The same as the top and bottom borders on the front of the quilt. I almost like it more than the front of the quilt - almost!

The quilt is very plump and cuddly as I used a high loft batting. I love it and can't wait to snuggle up in it as it is soooooo cold here at the moment. We had yet MORE snow today. But that is a different story.

I quilted it in "straight" lines with the feed dogs down. I reckoned that since it was an improv type quilt that wonkily straight lines would suit the quilt better than clinically straight lines.

Sampler Blocks and Tutorial

The 3 x 6 Min Sampler Quilt Bee is lots of fun. The idea is that we all make one block for 6 other people. Each person can say what colours they would like but that is it.

It was difficult to begin with to think of what block to make to suit 6 people's tastes. In the end I decided upon a pinwheel within a star. A couple of my group wanted wonky so I wonked their star points and borders. I hope they all like the outcome!

Melanie asked for a rainbow block.

Sheridan asked for red / aqua.

Katelyn asked for rainbow with critters.

Amanda asked for pink, grey, white and wonky.

Carla asked for green / turquoise and wonky.

Jo asked for eye spy.

In case you are interested in making these blocks yourself below are instructions for both the normal block and the wonky / liberated block! Have fun making them and let me know if you used this tutorial!

How to make the Basic Block

4 x 2.5" squares for corners (white)
2 x 3" squares of each pink, green, blue and red
8 x 3" squares white

2 strips 8.5" x 1.5" white
2 strips 6.5" x 1.5" white
4 strips 2.5" x 1.5" (pink, green, blue and red)
4 strips 3.5" x 1.5" (pink, green, blue and red)

2 x 3" squares white
2 x 3" squares yellow

Centre Pinwheel

Draw a line down the diagonal of 2 white 3" squares. Put right sides together with the 2 yellow squares. Sew 1/4" from the line on BOTH sides of the line. Cut along the line and press open. Trim to 2.5" square.

Arrange the 4 half square triangles to create a pinwheel. Sew together.

Borders

Sew pink and green 2.5" x 1.5" strips together to create a strip 4.5" x 1.5"
Sew red and blue 2.5" x 1.5" strips together to create a strip 4.5" x 1.5"
Sew pink and red 3.5" x 1.5" strips together to create a strip 6.5" x 1.5"
Sew green and blue 3.5" x 1.5" strips together to create a strip 6.5" x 1.5"

Sew borders to pinwheel.

Star Border

Draw a line down the diagonal of each of the remaining white squares.
Put each white square right sides together with each of the remaining 3" squares. Sew 1/4" from the line on BOTH sides of the line. Cut along the line, open, press and trim to 2.5" square.

Arrange as diagram

Sew block together.

Instructions for Wonky Liberated Block

4 x 2.5" squares for corners (white)
2 x 3" squares of each pink, green, blue and red
8 x 2.5" squares white

2 strips 8.5" x 2.5" white
2 strips 6.5" x 2.5" white
4 strips 6.5" x 2" (pink, green, blue and red)
4 strips 4.5" x 2" (pink, green, blue and red)

2 x 3" squares white
2 x 3" squares yellow

Create centre pinwheel as described above.

Add wonky borders to pinwheel by adding first border and cutting at angle.

Add second border and cut to make 8.5" square.

Star border

Cut each of the coloured 3" squares in half along the diagonal. Place right sides together on top of a 2.5" white square at an angle. Sew a 1/4" seam.

Open, press and trim to 2.5" square.

Sew border and block together as above.

A quilt for me!

I have totally fallen in love with a quilt in this book.

But nobody else in this house likes it. Amelie simply doesn't like black. "Oh Mummy why are you wearing such ugly clothes?" is her confidence inspiring comment whenever I dare to wear a black top. Hanna follows her sister's lead. Luis hummed and hahhed and said "It's not your usual taste". So I know full well he hates it.

So this quilt is for ME! I love it and I am going to make it regardless. But instead of the Double Bed size I was contemplating I have decided to make a snuggle up on the sofa size.

I've made 3 of the blocks so far. But I am not sure I can include this one! I think I was still smarting by the lack of enthusiasm in my family ;-)

I think the family will probably prefer the blocks I just made for Holly for the ten make two Bee.

She is making a rainbow spiderweb with monochromatic spiderwebs. I am in love with it already. I can't wait to see it take shape, it is certainly going to be a stunner.
