New Year New Products!

Last year I spent most of my time tucked away in my studio or on my sewing machine. I have managed to build up quite a collection of fabrics and images waiting to be transformed into lovely prints.

I've started this new phase of development by creating one off cushions with my hand printed or salvaged vintage fabrics. The Wild Mustard Vintage Cushion seems to be a favourite on Etsy where you can also check out my current line. I'm also going to be promoting my Royal Diamond Jubilee Velvet Cushion very soon in preparation for the Royal event!

My next aim is to complete a custom order for some cushions then I'm going to be moving onto a Tea Towel Range and Lamp Shades! I'm quite excited about the Lampshades. I'm visualising over sized floor standing lamp bases with possibly pom pom trims (I used pom poms on my cushions and LOVE them).

I've been carrying out a little bit of Lamp Shade research and really like these ones ...

This one is from Heals: Black and Gold Lampshade Large. I like the contrasting lining on it.

This lamp shade is available from House to Home: It's a Laura Ashley design. I really like the size of the shade compared to the bed side table. I also like the bright pink colour, it really stands out next to the dark wood and pale bedside table.

I thought I'd post a quick blog to wish everyone a fabulous festive time. I'm so excited, I can't wait to see all my family and relax. I've just wrapped my last few pieces, I feel quite organised! It's normally the night before and I'm still adding the finishing touches.

Now available on my Etsy shop are my hand made Lavendar Bags, sold in a set of three these would make an ideal gift for relaxing after the rush of Christmas.

I'm quite excited about my next event! I'm sharing a stall with one of my friends on Saturday the 10th of December at the lovely Colston Hall in Bristol. We're going to be showcasing a combination of home products, Tea Towels, Cushions, Pictures, and other pretty items, all ideal as Christmas gifts. St Werburghs Arts Trail 2011

Well, a week after the trail and I think I've recovered. It was awesome. The weather wasn't that great and 'Brisfest' was on over the same weekend but we still had over 80 people visit us. It was so good to talk to everyone and hear feedback. I also find it really interersting hearing peoples own stories they have to tell, about arty things that they like doing or used to do.

I think the trail is inspiring for both artists and also the visitors, I know that it helped me to plan the direction of my work more. There was such a varied mixture of artists and performers taking part that there really was something for everyone.

St Werburghs Arts Trail 2011

I'm going to be opening our home again this year for the St Werburghs Arts Trail. It will be on the Saturday the 24th and Sunday the 25th of September. I'll be showcasing my new Tea Towel designs along with some new product ideas which I'm rather excited about!

Design Work

I've been tucked away in my studio for the past couple of months working on my designs. Here are a few to look over. I'm working on a collection along the lines of 'Royal Oak' or something royalesque, I'm not quite sure of the exact name but I really like the theme. I've been working with water colour and pen & ink, I recently got Photo Shop for my laptop so will soon be transferring my designs into screen images and repeat designs ready to be transferred into textile images. I'm so excited!

We're going to be rather busy over the coming week as we have a plan of action to try to get the house completed by the beginning of July, my sister is coming to stay and we want to impress! I don't know what to do next with my design work though, I've got so many ideas for my textile products I just don't have enough time to do everything!

I'll post some more images of the house soon as it's starting to come together now.

There seem to be quite a few well established company's within the UK that still offer screen printing services rather than digitally printing paper which I'm really pleased about. I still want my work to be unique and have that hand finished touch. Here are a few of the companys I've found so far that offer wallpaper / mural printing services:

My designs on Vinyl Flooring!!

I am researching methods how I can get my textiles produced and found this awesome website. Printed Space offer a service to print any image on to padded vinyl. Imagine walking on my designs!

This example is very fishy inspired. Printed Space offer a 10 year guarantee with any design/image of your choice.

I think I may keep this company in mind for future aims. You could also use the vinyl as wallpaper, easy clean and hard wearing!

We cleared out garden of all out building rubble last weekend so I'm now planning our summer project. Our garden isn't nearly as big as this space but I do like the idea of having a little hide away space to go and read my book. Perhaps I can use my weaving skills but on a larger scale!

Inspirational recycled pouffes

I'm doing some market research at the moment to try and identify where I want to sit in the market. I stumbled across these lovely colourfull pouffes that have such a childlike fun aspect. I really appreciate that they are made from recycled fabric.

Dusk consists of two pouffes made of recycled textiles from the furniture industry. Around the middle of the pouffes is a belt made of material. The height of the pouffe can be adjusted by the width of the belt. Pictured is one pouffe at a seating height suitable for children and another at a height for adults. The pouffes are inspired by childish memories of making tassels – to a different scale, but just as colurful. They have their own personality and brighten up the greyness of everyday life. via

New Studio Space

I moved into my new studio space today. It's at Hamilton House on Stokes Croft in Bristol. It's ran by an organisation called Coexist who re-invent unused spaces. It makes the most out of the spaces for the local community. Taken from 'Bristol Listings' . . Coexist Spaces and History Hamilton House is made up of three blocks.

The block facing Stokes Croft is the creative hands of the Coexist project. This block has a range of spaces available to the community – info/expo space providing various advisories, exhibitions and retail space for workshop and tenant creations, movement and dance studios, community meeting spaces, music recording facilities, cinema room, audiovisual conferencing, holistic healing area and of course Stokes Croft’s newest music and arts venue.

In the middle block at the top of the building is the Coexist hot-desking space. This is a hive of enterprise, education, art and social change initiatives. The remaining floors of the middle block are home to studios and workshops.

On the upper floors of the block at the back of the building you will find desk-based organisations including Bristol Wireless and Bristol Foundation Housing, 2QAB and The Adventurists. On the ground floor of this block opening onto City Road is the home of Jakes Bikes and The Bristol Bike Project.

I can't wait to have my own space set up where I can leave out all my creative materials and just concentrate on designing and doing. I think being surrounded my such people will also be a big motivational drive for me. I'm in space 3C which is a corner space with lots of windows and very good light. I'm sharing with two other textile people, a costume designer and a knitter.

Only four days to go until the St Werburghs Arts Trail, I've still got a lot to do. This mainly involves getting the space ready to hang my work, Dan's still got plastering to do in the living room! Then we're having a painting extravaganza on Wednesday night to get the living room white washed. My job tonight is to finish the painting in the hallway and then start deciding which pieces I'd like to exhibit. I've got some lovely frames to use for some of my research work. I can't wait to see what the finished pieces will look like.

If I have enough time I'd like to bake some rock buns to entice people into the house! Fingers crossed I'll get everything ready in time. I'm quite excited about hanging the bunting on Saturday morning, I think it will feel like we've reached a massive goal post with the house, getting so much completed.

The Arts Trail will also be the launch of my new cards, I picked them up this weekend from The Bristol Business Centre. I'm really happy with the outcome, you'll have to come and have a look . .

I'd like to invite you to come and saunter round the lovely area of St Werburghs whilst taking in the local artists vast array of skills. From Illustrators, Textile Artists, Photographers and Story Tellers there are plenty to keep you entertained.

With various sites taking place, The City Farm, The Farm Pub, The St Werburghs Community Centre, Communal Green Space at the yard, not to forget the Miners Arms. You will definitely know St Werburghs better after you had a nosy round the different events.

Preperation for the local St Werburghs Arts Trail

Phew we've been busy. Since my last blog we had family to stay in August, we then commenced work on the hallway and the living room. Hopefully I'll finish the painting of the hallway this weekend, Dan's still got quite a bit to do in the living room before we can start painting in there, it may be bare plaster walls for the trail! Dan ripped the fire place out so needs to make a new surround to fit, which I have a feeling may take a while. I'm sure it will be worth it though.

I've started to research companies where I can get my images printed onto cards, I found that Bristol Business Centre do a good deal. I'm quite excited!! It seems very professional, I'm looking forward to getting a few samples next week.

The inspiration for these images came from wooden printing blocks. I've created a series of these. I quite like the depth and the roughness to them.

I really like these images, anything paisley related takes me back to my student days at Glasgow School of Art.

My plan for the next week is to finalise the card images to get printed then start framing some of my work for the show. I'm going to show some drawings that I haven't exhibited before, I'm quite excited about these as I've got some unusual ideas on how to display them!

House Renovating

We've been in our home now for two years and a month. It feels like a long time, we've done quite a lot, but still have a fair bit left to do.

We've now completed the kitchen, whooo hooo. After a lot of deliberation we finally settled on colours. It's quite difficult compromising, when I would love to go really girly and Dan loves black and white, we aimed for a retro feel instead (I thought I can girlifie it later with curtains, pictures and
soft furnishings, I 'll just slowly ease them in! sssshhh!!).

We opted for Dulux Apple White - A classic, clean pale green which can make a room feel fresh and alive. We used this on most of the main walls, but stayed below the dido rail. Above we kept fresh and clean with a pure white.

Then we used a dark Overtly Olive - A calm, muted green that has an air of sophistication about it. On the chimney breast wall. As you can just about see in the below right image.

By using the same colour but in different shades you can create interest in a room without being too overpowering. Overtly Olive works well with Apple White.

The next project is to complete the bathroom, this was started about Easter last year.

Since then we've been having a bath every morning, this started out as a luxury but soon wore of it. You get a bit fed up of getting up 20mins prior to bath time!

Dan has been very good and made us a lovely swish bathroom. It feels such a luxury to use it now. We have an awesome walk in shower that Dan designed and made for us. If anyone wants a bespoke shower you know where to come!

I have to give lots of praise to Dan as he has been working so hard, I can't keep up with the pace he's going at. Dan really encouraged me to apply to take part in the St Werburghs Arts Trail this year. This has really spurred me on to start thinking creatively again. It has also however given Dan a very tight deadline to work to. Dan's aim is to complete the majority of the building work in the house prior to the Arts Trail which is at the end of September. This involves getting the living room in a usable state, it has been our store room for the past two years, then also decorating the hallway and landing. If anyone would like to lend a hand painting get in touch!!

The bathroom is almost there, we now have everything plumbed in and working. It's quite long and thin so we opted for quite pale, light shades to make the space feel as big as we could. However, we did splash out a bit and just added a feature wall of GOLD! How bling! I wasn't quite sure about it at first but I think it actually works really well. It's not too over the top.

As well as getting the bathroom to a more finished standard our spare bedroom needs to be completed Oooo I'd say in about 2 weeks tops! We have family coming to stay so have a lot of work to do. I'll upload more pics of this work soon.

Although I am living down in Bristol most of my family live in Dumfires & Galloway in the South West of Scotland. It is here that my creativity was first ignited, where a lot of my inspiration comes from. Members of my family have recently been working very hard to open a gallery that exhibits talents from three generations.

The Screen Printing Process . . .

A good supplier of screen printing equipment is 'Wicked Printing Stuff', they stock just about everything you can imagine that is required for screen printing, they also offer very good advice. I thought I'd include a step by step guide for new printers on the process . .

Screens are made by putting a chemical emulsion on a mesh surface.
Vector artwork is taken from Adobe Illustrator or Freehand and printed out on a film type paper or vellum.
The screen is then exposed on a light table with the artwork under it.
The light solidifies the chemicals around the design, and where the light failed to pass through, the chemical breaks down.
The screen is then rinsed out and what is left is the area where the light hit.
When screen-printing, one colour at a time is applied and therefore the cost will increase with each additional colour applied.
Likewise a separate screen is required for each colour.

You can then have fun experimenting! Enjoy.

I found out this week that I've not missed the deadline for the St Werburghs Arts Trail, this means that over the weekend period -

Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th September

Our home will be open to all whilst I exhibit my work. If you're free please come along and visit.

I'm quite excited as I haven't shown any work since, oooooo last June!

Myself and my partner Dan have been concentrating on bringing our little home back to life. It was a little run down. Now however, we have almost completed the kitchen and the bathroom and so can start inviting people over.

So, I have roughly two months to get the house in order and decide how to show my work!! Exciting!!
