Patsy has been broody for about a week, every time we go out to the coop we boot her off the nest box and she fluff up like a turkey and struts around . . . silly chicken.

It was Gimpy's turn to lay a huge egg today. Now it isn't as large as the one Naomi laid last week, but above average for sure. Must be something in the water . . .

double yolker

Well, it was a double yolker. Two full size yolks instead of the smaller yolks in a usual double yolk egg. Hannah asked, so I made her a one egg omelet.

On the right is one of Naomi's regular eggs, equal to about an extra-large or jumbo store egg. On the left is the one she laid today. It's at least a double yoker, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were a triple.

Here is a picture of the foot of one of the Salmon Faverolles. They are one of just a couple of breeds that have five toes, a result of Dorkings being used to develop the breed.

Faverolles are listed as critical on the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy's Conservation Priority List, if I had more land I would be tempted to keep a breeding flock, very tempted.

. . . and we went and picked up the chicks and ducklings.

The chicks are Partridge Chanteclers, Brown Leghorns, Cuckoo Marans and Salmon Faverolles.

The ducklings are Khaki Campbells, I ordered four females and one male but we lost one in shipping so we'll have to wait to see if we still have a male or not.

Today we went for a ride to the local feed store, they were supposed to get chicks in on Friday and we wanted to pick up a couple of the more common breeds I didn't order from the hatchery. They were completely sold out. The kids were very disappointed so we headed off to another not as local feed store. Jackpot! They were out of Buff Orpingtons, but we were able to get two Rhode Island Reds (Ruby and Rosy) and four Ameraucanas, also called Easter Eggers. We opted not to get any Australorps, hubby calls them devil chickens because they are coal black with black eyes and the ones we had in the past were a bit, umm, evil.

The kids took turns holding the box on the way home and were very good about leaving the chicks in the box until we arrived home.
