It is an African-American
spiritual compiled by John W. Work II dating back to at least 1865 that is found in both the Lutheran Worship hymnal page 504 and the Lutheran Service Book page 388. It is considered a
Christmas carol because its original lyric celebrates the Nativity of Jesus: "Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere; go tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born." May we never forget God’s first coming to earth and to share the news with everyone.

Refrain
Go, tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain,
That Jesus Christ is born.

While shepherds kept their watching
o’er silent flocks by night,
Behold, throughout the heavens
There shone a holy light.

Refrain

The shepherds feared and trembled,
When lo! above the earth,
Rang out the angel chorus
That hailed our Savior's birth.

Refrain

Down in a lonely manger
The humble Christ was born
And God sent us salvation
That blessed Christmas morn

The Yoke

The yoke is a burden of hardship and toil, as well as of subservience. But Jesus said the “yoke” of serving him is “easy” and that he provides rest for the weary (Matthew 11:28‐30). The yoke also symbolizes human allegiance, as in marriage (2 Corinthians 6:14, NIV).

2010 Lenten Devotions

Lutheran Hour Ministries' 2010 Lenten devotions are now available for free! We at Hanover do reap great rewards from what is “sown” with the Lord. The metaphor is not lost on me, as our efforts continue in the music department. So consider it an open invitation that anyone wanting to contribute musically to the Lord’s Glory may discuss it with me at any time. Our continuing opportunities to contribute our talents are with Handbell practice on Wednesdays at 6:00 pm in the sanctuary where all skill levels are welcome.

Starting February 17, after Lenten services (at 7:45 pm) the vocal choir will be meeting for 6
weeks where we will prepare musical selections for the Easter season. Attendance at
all practices and performances is not required. Feel free to participate when you can. If you have any comments about these or other musical opportunities at Hanover, feel free to contact me anytime.

The Lenten season will be here soon

The Transfiguration of Our Lord—Sunday February 14, 2010
The Transfiguration is always celebrated in our Lutheran circles on the Last Sunday after the
Epiphany. It must not be isolated from what has gone before or what will follow. It forms a bridge between Epiphany and Lent. (Transfiguration Sunday is the last Sunday after Epiphany, and forms a nice bridge between the themes in the Epiphany Season and those of the upcoming Lenten Season.) Immediately prior to this glorious event, Jesus had been talking with the disciples about His rapidly approaching Passion. He knew that soon He would begin His fateful last journey to Jerusalem. The disciples had difficulty dealing with this, sharing the common Jewish expectation of a Messiah who would demonstrate earthly pomp and power. A suffering Messiah was alien to their thinking. The Transfiguration served the purpose of giving them a glimpse of Jesus' true identity, something for them to remember on the dark days that lay ahead of them as their Master would be arrested, tried, sentenced, and executed.

Ash Wednesday, February 17, A day for ashes
Since the Middle Ages, Christians in the so‐called Western Church have observed Ash Wednesday (the seventh Wednesday before Easter) as the first day of Lent. On this day, in many churches, worshipers receive ashes on the forehead as a reminder of their sorrow for their sins. The ashes are often made by burning palm branches left over from the previous year’s Palm Sunday. If you are interested in receiving ashes early that morning, please contact the church office, 3358583.
Services will be held at 11:00 am and 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary with Pastor Kobak

Wednesday Lenten Services: February 24—March 24
The significance of Lent: Lent is the fourth season of the Christian year. Its length is the 40 days preceding Easter Day, not counting Sundays. This means Lent always begins on a Wednesday, known as Ash Wednesday. Lent commemorates Jesus’ fast and temptation in the wilderness of Judea Province, which, according to the Gospel, lasted 40 days. Just as Jesus confronted his temptations during these 40 days, Lent helps Christians focus on our most basic need as sinners: forgiveness. The only way our Lord’s forgiving power can become effective in our lives is by our taking the initiative to confront our sins, confess them and repent of them. In short, Lent is a season of penitence. Some Christians fast during Lent. This denial of bodily comforts can help encourage self‐reflection about the need for Jesus’ forgiveness.

Wednesdays, February 24—March 24
11:00 am—Service in Sanctuary
12:00 noon—Potluck in Meeting Room, bring a dish to share
5:30 pm—Lenten Supper in Meeting Room
(provided by groups in the church—sign up in office window)
7:00 pm Service in the Sanctuary

Lutherans faith is purely “Sola Fide” ...

Lutherans faith is purely “Sola Fide” ...

What does that mean?

Lutherans are viewed by theologians as a religion of “sola fide”. Faith alone.
We are saved by faith alone. The doctrine of sola fide or "faith alone" asserts Grace,
God's pardon for guilty sinners, is granted to and received through faith or belief alone,
to the exclusion of all human efforts or works.

As one searches for this “faith” you must keep in mind all humanity, it is
asserted, is fallen and sinful, under the curse of God, and incapable of saving itself from
God's wrath and curse. But God, on the basis of the life, death, and resurrection of his
Son, Jesus Christ alone (sola Christus), grants sinners judicial pardon, or justification,
which is received only and solely through the divine gift of faith.

Faith can be looked at as passive as far as our actions are concerned and merely
receiving Christ and all his benefits, among which benefits are the active and passive
righteousness of Jesus Christ. Christ's righteousness is imputed (accounted) by God to
the believing sinner (as opposed to infused or imparted), so that the divine verdict and
pardon of the believing sinner is based not upon anything in the sinner, nor even faith
itself, but upon Jesus Christ and his righteousness alone, which are received through
faith alone. Justification is by faith alone and is distinguished from the other graces of
salvation, which always accompany justification.

Our Faith justifies not as a work, not as a quality, and definitely not as knowledge.
For if faith were only knowledge, then the devil would certainly be saved because he
possesses a greater knowledge of God than all of us, yet his knowledge does not save
him from damnation but faith can be described as the acquiesce of the will and firm
confidence in the mercy of God.

Our relationship with God is not a neutral one. Our faith is active and a intricate
part of who we are as individuals. We are interwoven as His creation, as we would not
even be here if he did not decide to create us. Our faith is based on trusting in God and
what he is going to do.

Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings. By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death;he could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.

“Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. The Old Testament prophets were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. They admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country-- a heavenly one.

Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
Moses by faith kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel. By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned. By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the people had marched around them for seven days. By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient. I could go on and on…Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel
and the prophets, who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies. Women received back their dead, raised to life again. Others were tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a better resurrection. Some faced jeers and flogging, while still others were chained and put
in prison. They were stoned; they were sawed in two; they were put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated-- the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground. These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. They had to wait for the word to be made flesh. God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.”

Our faith comes through God being made flesh. Perfection came through Jesus walking the perfect life in order to bestow a perfect faith Are we really perfected through our faith? We are made Perfect through that same Faith which is not our own creation but is one God has bestowed through Jesus Christ, for you and for me.

*With joy excerpts of this article are directly lifted from Hebrews 11:1-40 to display the incredible relevance and readability of the words of God relating directly to our faith.

~Rev. The Kobak family is from Fort Worth, Texas.

Life in the ministry does not always begin as one would expect. Tony started his first career after graduating from Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics as a Jet mechanic. He was hired upon achievement of his Federal Airframe and Powerplant License with Delta Airlines. He worked for Delta for 15 years. While he was employed with Delta for 15 years, he entered Embry Riddle Aeronautical University graduating in 2005 Valedictorian and Magna Cum Laude, earning his Bachelors of Science in Professional Aeronautics. Tony was promoted to supervisor as a Lead Aircraft Technician in Dallas and Tampa with a promising career ahead of him in the aviation field.

However, God had very different plans for him. After becoming a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Hurst, Texas, he and his wife became active youth counselors. Tony had sung in the Chancel choir for 12 years with his wife Lisa. In 2003 Tony was asked to be the chaplain of the choir. He started out by reading "canned" devotions and slowly started writing his own.

Throughout this process, he also led many different bible studies. People suggested to him that he should go into the ministry. Tony discussed this with Lisa always coming to the conclusion... "Why would God want some greasy jet mechanic to go into the ministry. I have never met a jet mechanic who was a reverend, so I don't think God would want someone like me.

Two weeks after this comment, Tony was sitting at a pot luck across from a 70 year old Reverend, who had just retired. After hearing Tony's a lengthy life story the Rev. across the table said "That is interesting... I was an aircraft mechanic 30 years ago, before I went into the ministry.... You can guess the rest.

Tony enrolled at Concordia, St. Louis in August of 2005. He carried along with him Lisa, his wife of 15 years, Victoria and Anthony his two children. Tony served his vicarage at Hanover Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He developed a strong fervor for preaching while serving as a field worker at St. Paul, Des Peres under Rev. Dr. David Smith.

Tony graduated from Concordia Seminary in May 2009 and has accepted his first call to serve as Sr. Pastor of Hanover Lutheran Church, Cape Girardeau, MO.

Tony loves to share the gospel through his actions and sometimes even words when necessary. His faith shines in everything he does as you can see God working through him to reach the lost. His love for all God's people is shown not just in his preaching but also in working with all people of all ages and races.
