Gramling Farms - The Real Dirt

Farm Day - July 10th.

We are having our annual farm day celebration on July 10th. It gives us an opportunity to have you as our guest for as long as you want to visit with us and for us to put our best foot forward and show you all we have to offer. We're not just peaches!

Come any time - we will be serving samples of our produce and canned goods throughout the day. From 2pm - 5pm we will serve peaches and ice cream. Buggy rides will be offered from 10:00am - 11:30am and from 1:00pm and 2:00pm. We will have a farm simulator where you can simulate driving farm equipment, corn hole games and a petting area all day. Ask about ordering your custom made corn hole game while you're here.

Our market will be showcasing our garden harvest as well as our garden center, canned goods and other items such as hand made dish cloths and dog food.

We will have information about our fall field trips, wedding carriage service (with the carriage on site) and bulk lime and fertilizer. Just ask one of us and we'll be glad to help.

"Hay" - There are Too Many Titles

As I started to write this post I thought about starting it with the title, "Anything You Can Do" and tying in a video of the song from Annie Get Your Gun. I then found an interesting take off on it where the song was put to the faces of Hermonie and Ron from Harry Potter. I thought it was cute - google it if you have time. Anyway - something didn't seem so funny about that approach as I sat down to write after the pictures uploaded. I then had the Deniece Williams Song - Let's Hear It For The Boy stuck in my head. While that was more funny I thought - the lines, "Now finish cleaning up your room - Let's see that dust fly with that broom - And take that garbage out real soon... yakety yak don't talk back." Seemed to fit too.

After feeling like my brain was an iPod stuck with soundtrack music in it - I decided to stop and just suggest that all these titles and songs would fit - it's just a matter of how you're feeling today. Pick your music and let's continue :)

LADIES. Does your man seem to be messy around the house - and perhaps a little less help than you'd like him to be? If so - you need to show him how Trey and Eric have put their valuable home ec skills to use and applied them to farming. Or maybe we need to call their wives and tell them the farming skills can be applied at home. Notice the hay field below. See how messy and un-kept it looks. It needed to be tidied up a little - and yesterday, Trey and Eric took the initiative to do it. They said it was to get it finished before it rained - but I know it was bothering them that there was a mess somewhere that needed cleaning.

Trey is raking. I think it looks a lot like sweeping. See how the right side of the picture is clean and neat - and everything to his left looks like a bedroom covered with laundry?

Just look - a few passes with this industrial sized broom and he's got it all neatly piled in rows. YEA TREY!

Now that it's in rows - Eric is ready to help.

With his vacuum he drives over Trey's organized rows and picks them up. He's careful to not leave any debris behind because he knows that Trey will be upset if his sweeping efforts are not appreciated. Men like working in teams. Ladies - if you are trying to get your husband to help - perhaps you should suggest they work in pairs. Shown here it seems to help them stay on task.

Once the vacuum is full - it's time to empty it before he can pick up more. Eric gives it a moment to compact itself so that the end result is a neat parcel that will be easy for someone to pick up (with a bobcat). There's that thoughtful nature in men again. Just thinking of how their job can make the next guy's easier.

Once he's finished - he neatly places the hay back in the field.

One could make the rough comparison to a labor and delivery I guess - but that might be too much.

And the end result is this! A nice, neat bale of hay... and a nicer, neater field that looks SO much better than it did a few minutes ago.

Now. Of course the men think they have "cleaned" better than any woman could. They'll come home tired and complain of sun burn, sweat in their eyes and the need of a shower. I think that it's only right to point out - that even though this looks like they've done something great - a woman does this much work every day and sometimes much more - WITHOUT THE USE OF HEAVY MACHINES!

She Thinks My Tractor's HOT (when it's 90*)

This morning my girls and I woke up in Gramling so we got to the farm early to see what was going on. I needed new pictures and today was a great day to be there. As it turns out - there was a regular grand prix of tractor driving going on before the rains this weekend. Here's the line-up as we saw them.

Henry was working in the garden this morning on the G. Something about rows and later planting peas. I'm not sure I understood entirely - but this was his tractor of choice. It's little and lean - but can put in a hard days work.

In my opinion it looks like you wouldn't be very hot on this tractor because there was a nice breeze at the farm today and the lack of body and extra metal makes me think... this was an early air conditioned tractor. I could be wrong noticing that he's sitting above the engine... but I'm not sure. We'll have to ask him.

Eric's tractor of the morning is the BIG John Deere. I guess we could start singing another song about Big Green Tractors but we won't... at least not out loud. You go right ahead.

Eric zoomed past me at tractor high speed to get some work done before the rains come in either tonight or tomorrow. At first glance you think he's in a cab where he might have the luxuries of air and possibly radio... but that's your first glance. He's not... and that hood makes it hotter because it's dark green and absorbs heat radiating it down on his head. The side effect of such an environment is terrible. If you've met Eric - you know what I'm talking about... but I'll just say that that much heat on your head might be hard on your hair. :)

Last - but definitely not least in our lineup - here's Trey sporting the mid-size Kubota. It's just right for an average day of work on the farm.

This tractor is what all tractors look like in my mind (or schema file as my mom says). This tractor pulls 5 bin box trailers of peaches, it can be used to spray orchards, move irrigation pipes and equipment and of course - bush hog the fields. Yes - this is the tractor of all tractors in my mind and Trey is just man of all men to be driving it this morning.

More to come about all they did with these machines later. It's hot, my girls are asleep and I'd like to have a moment to myself before someone wakes up.

The Rains Came Down

Well - we've had some good rain lately and it's just what we need to make our garden grow. We've been planting tomatoes, corn, beans, okra, peas and squash - just to name a few things... Every day we're adding more and watching what we planted grow a little more each day...

I haven't been up for pictures lately because I find any outing with two girls difficult - but maybe I'll have time later this week to show you what we've been doing.

I don't know if you've noticed - but the ant population in my yard is exploding as the days warm up. In the past, I've used lots of different things to try and keep them at bay or kill them because I am not a fan of fire ants. This year I have a 2.5 year old who enjoys the back yard and fresh air. Keeping fire ants at bay is a requirement. So is using a chemical that is safe. Sevin is just the thing. I've used it on a few mounds that had started to break through the grass - and they're completely gone. Sevin is an extremely lethal (to insect) poison - but is not a risk to people. If you have children or pets in your yard - and want to keep them safe and your bugs under control - use Sevin. Of course - we have it available in our garden center in liquid or powder form.

Parents (Mom's especially), Pets and Plants

When you think of your weekend plans - you should probably be thinking about your mom, wife or grandmother. It is Mother's Day this Sunday in case you've missed it! We are here to make your shopping easier and your gifts a sure success. Nothing is better than strawberry short cake - or home made strawberry ice cream on Mother's Day weekend. Come by our market and stock up on garden starters like plants (beautiful Gerber Daisies and hanging baskets), gloves, fertilizers and pest controls.

We also have an assortment of gift items like bird houses, hand made dish cloths and a wide variety of canned goods. You can put together a personal gift basket or bag of your choosing sure to please!

As far as pets go - Trey has given us over to the dogs this year. We're now offering high protein dog food in 50lb bags for $15.99/bag. It's a great food that we all use with our animals so we highly recommend it.

We're going to be planting soon! We got our tomato plants in this week and have plowed and are ready to pull beds for our summer garden. This is an exciting and busy time for us. We're also cutting hay (oat and fescue) that we will have available to you soon.

On a personal note - Happy Mother's Day MOM!! I love you and celebrate you daily... And thank you to my family... for making me a Mom. It's the greatest job ever!

We're open daily for the 2010 Season! We have strawberries, hanging baskets, bedding and potting plants with all the tools, soils, fertilizers and extras you need to get the job done! We also have our assortment of breads, fritters, jams, jellies, salsas and pickles along with many other things!

These are the Gerber Daisies that Trey and Ruba have been tending the past few months. They are absolutely gorgeous! (The flowers... not Trey and Ruba)

Berries and Babies

We are picking berries this week. They're absolutely beautiful and the taste... WOW. Come see us this weekend for the start of your Gramling Strawberry season. We're open Friday and Saturday!

The other thing that's happened recently is that Henry is a grand papa again. Here he is playing with Granddaughter 2 in the hospital last week. Now it's really going to be hard keeping him at work! :)

And yes... he is tickling her feet to make her cry. Why do you think he looks so happy about that?

They grow up so fast.

This was what the strawberry field looked like on March 31st. Healthy plants, full leaves.

Look how much they grew in just 7 days!!! I took this picture a week later on April 7th. It is with parental pride and a bit of a mist in the eye that we can look at these and say, "They grow up so fast." But then that mist might be related to all the pollen in the air... who knows.

I also took the time to look at Trey and Ruba's pride and joys... the Gerber daisies. They have been working with them, helping them get enough water, warmth and protection to grow in this early spring so that we will have them full and beautiful by our opening. You know you'll want some for your yard or to consider for your Mother's Day presents. Remember us as Mom's day approaches and we are opening for spring. Mother's love lush hanging baskets, Gramling strawberries and new spring garden supplies and we will have it all!

Making a Farmer

I have a city husband and therefore a city daughter. I love them both dearly - wouldn't trade them for anything - but they are not "farmers" at heart. YET. My little girl loves playing outside - so I think there's hope. She got a sand box for Easter - and spent the first few minutes of it picking the sand out of her toes b/c she wasn't sure about life without shoes. This concerned me at first - but then I thought about the evidence that she may not be a "city kid" all her life and decided to look for proof and share it with you.

She knows how to throw the frills and bows aside for a good yard working outfit and baseball cap.

She walks fence line and inspects it for broken boards that might let the horses out (though she will not touch the horses). She also is learning about what kind of care to give the Bermuda grass before the weeds take over this spring. Apparently there are things you can put over the top of it that will kill the weeds and not the grass. This is nice for her to learn.

After a few minutes in the sand - she adjusted to being dirty and began digging and building things. This made me feel much better. At one point she even lay down in the sand. The bath was extreme that night - but worth it. I loved seeing her have that much fun.

And last - but not least - she shows interest in heavy equipment! Papa's lawnmower, Dad's lawn mower and anything to do with talking about a bobcat is right up her alley! YeeHaw... she might be a country girl after all!

B is for...

B is for Beautiful. This was the view from the field yesterday afternoon.

B is for Berry. The rows and rows with plant after plant of soon to be berries.

B is for Bloom. This is what a strawberry bloom looks like if you've never seen one.

B is for broccoli. We got it planted yesterday. It's hard to believe that these tiny plants will be producing crowns of broccoli in a few short weeks.

Spring Fever and Freezers

While the weather is absolutely GORGEOUS this week - it is important to remember... It's still early. We are being tricked a little into thinking there's no more cold - and while we believe (hope) there's no more bitter cold - it's not yet time to plant your garden or spring plants. Too risky.

This weather makes me want to be outside. Last weekend we did hours and hours of yard work. We pruned, cut grass, hauled off debris, and took time to sit in a chair under our oak tree and plan a patio and back yard renovation (that won't take place for years!). It also made me hungry for grilled and fresh food. Thankfully that was a real possibility. Thanks to Dad's freezer!

I don't know about you - but there are two things I've noticed about food lately. The first is, it seems to be costing more and more. And the second is it never tastes as good as I want it (if I'm thinking about produce from any store).

After working outside all day Saturday, we made a Taco Salad for dinner. While there's not that can be messed up about lettuce and onions from the grocery store - the rest of the salad is special to me. I used some fresh corn that I got from Dad's freezer, along with one pretty good grocery store tomato to make a corn salsa. I just drained the corn and added some spices, the diced tomato and a few hot peppers from a jar and let it sit all day in the fridge. I'll put together the entire recipe and share it at a later time - I was experimenting with it but it turned out okay :) And no - there's no picture of the finished product b/c I ate it all before I thought about that.

My point is - you can have fresh veggies all year - and now is the time to start planning for next year. If you see people running ads for freezers - think about buying one this year. It's so easy (and cost effective) to freeze fruits and veggies. We use Ziploc freezer bags which make for good portion sizes and that's all you need! Most veggies have to be blanched before putting them in the bags - but it only takes a few short minutes to do that and you can eat well all winter.

Stock up on your bags and clean out your freezer! Also save glass jars if your're interested in canning - we'll have lessons in that as the time draws closer. When our crops come in - you won't want to miss out on the freshness and the deals of buying this summer and putting up for your fall and winter. It's something you, your family and your bank account will thank you for!

Sunday Weather Surprise

So - Who was surprised with the weather yesterday? It was something else. I had the pleasure of being in Gramling yesterday during all the hail, wind and rain - so I took a few pictures as it stopped to show you.

Henry and Eric were at the market as the storm was peaking yesterday - and reported that the strawberry plants were protected b/c the row covers were still on them from the cold the night before. This provided a blanket against the direct blows from the hail. The young peach trees can be hurt by hail - but they thought that things looked okay yesterday. The real checking and looking will take place this week and as the trees start to bloom and develop leaves in a few weeks - but right now we think things are okay.

Let's hope that the rest of the weeks weather is like this.

Popcorn on Peach Trees

Monday afternoon my 2 year old, Polly, and I were driving from our home in Spartanburg up to Gramling for dinner. It was a nice day - a little brisk - but nice. She was enjoying her first bowl of popcorn, ever, as we drove up the road. We talked most of the ride about popcorn, how it was like chips, but soft and that she wanted more, More, MORE! Thankfully I had a bag that we popped as we left the house and I was able to keep her supplied. It's nice to add a new snack to our menu... keeps it from being boring.

Anyway - as we got close to "Papa's Market" as she calls the Gramling Farms Market - she pointed and said, "I see popcorn!" Sure enough... there was popcorn on peach trees! I stopped and took a few pictures. I knew we had to be getting close to bloom time - but didn't realize it was here. Maybe when we go back up again this week we can see more and take pictures with her playing among the trees. It was a little too wet Monday for me to want her in the orchard - but here's what we saw.

After photographing them - we went on to my parents house and found Papa (aka Henry) at the barn. We played with the wagon, sat on a bobcat and found these!

Yes - we're going to plant more broccoli soon! We are so excited. It's the only kind of broccoli that Polly eats! Look for it - in the market soon.

A Lesson in Pruning with Trey and Eric

Our young trees have really grown this year. Eric, Trey and Henry have taken excellent care of them and may have set some sort of growth record in trees during this first year. Now that they have started to establish themselves - it's time to give them a little structure. They need to be pruned to know how we want them to grow for the best yield and most efficient maintenance.

First, Eric and Trey look at the trees to determine which cuts need to be made to give the tree the desired shape and also to leave the tree healthy, strong and ready to grow this spring and summer. The right cuts can help you predict how a tree will grow. Did you know you can actually train a tree to do what you want.

After looking and deciding - we cut.

Re-evaluate.

And admire our work.

Do you see how the trees look like slingshots or "Y's" This allows them two main branches for growth and production. The main branches grow into the meadow strip between the rows and there is not part of the tree that grows towards another tree in it's row. This allows us to plant more trees per acre than the previous style of pruning. More trees/acre (aka High Density Farming) mean that it takes less fertilizer, lime and time to maintain a higher number of trees than we could in the past when the trees grew farther apart. This helps keep the cost of production down and the orchard looking very neat and tidy.

Because - after all - it's about keeping the orchard neat and tidy.

Old Pictures.

I was cleaning out and going through a box of old pictures and found a few "farm related" that I thought I'd share. Of course - they were pre-digital pictures - and since I don't have a scanner I used today's clouds as a wonderful opportunity to get as good a replication as possible (when photographing a photograph). If you're curious - this is best done in natural - filtered light (a cloudy day) without using a flash on your camera.

The first is an old pic from about 1980 of my mom and me. We were planting apple trees on one of the farms and went to see the goings on. I guess this is how to give someone an early start in farm life :)

This is our current market under construction in 2002. We've come a long way!

And this - this could be the saddest, most horrific picture any farmer or lover of all things produce, green and spring could ever see. The date in the corner was March 20th 2001 I believe... and if you can't tell... that's sleet and snow around blooming peach trees. Let's all hope this doesn't happen this year (or any other year for that matter).

Spring in Savannah, GA

This weekend we (my husband, daughter and I) were in Savannah, GA for a quick stop. We discovered that they already have flowers blooming in some places - and it was nice enough to walk on the river front with a light jacket and enjoy the fresh air.

That must mean that spring is just around the corner! I really don't want it to snow this week - but if it does... at least we can be assured that maybe it'll warm up and stay that way soon. There's fun to be had and work to be done!

*And no - she didn't want to pose for a picture. All she wanted to do was run around the City Market and point at the horses. This was the best I got.

The down and dirty, Friday List

So - It's Friday. It's windy... and just because - I am going to give you the down and dirty list of things going through our minds this morning.

The strawberry plants have been covered with frost protective sheets. This keeps the blooms safe on cold windy days and cold still nights.
We are on track for berries in mid April.
Next week (barring no snow event on Tuesday) we are planning to plant broccoli plants and should be harvesting that in about 45 days. This is about the same time as the berries.
Henry needs a camera to send more pictures to me to update the blog :)
With fertilizer and lime season starting - we really hope it doesn't rain or snow on Tuesday - but if farmers could choose the weather - we'd be better off.
It's almost time to do ground prep work for our early veggie plantings.
In about a month - you should be seeing pink in the trees up here as the peach blossoms usually come in late March.
We are super excited about this season!

Fertilizer and Lime Season... starting now.

It is Fertilizer season by the calendar, but the weather does not seem to cooperate. It has been a long and wet winter. I did not try to remind you about applying fertilizer and lime last year because the prices were abnormally high. If you could skip a year, 2009 was the year to do just that. Fortunately prices have declined some.

It is time to replace the nutrients that were used and leached out if the soils last year. In the past most of us have used the “do what we did last year” method for deciding what rate or analysis to use. Due to the cost of nutrients today, I would recommend that everyone get soil samples to determine their exact needs and the cost of sample testing is only $6.00. Fertilizer is too expensive to waste. It is easy to take samples and in my experience those that rely on sample information usually apply a more efficient fertilizer which saves them money.

So, what can you expect to spend on nutrients?

These prices include delivery and spreading fees.

Lime - $50.00 per ton (1 ton per acre)

Fertilizer- ranges from $490.00-550.00 per ton (depending on analysis and mix)

Normally, we apply 350-400 pounds of fertilizer per acre. This equates to about 5 acres per ton of fertilizer applied.

Good Weather Weekend

Go out and enjoy the weather this weekend. Some of us are in the mountains, and some are at the shore. Where ever you are - enjoy and have fun. Sun and Sixty degrees will be incredible after the snow and rain we've had lately.

This taste of spring is just what we need to keep us looking forward for the next few weeks until our season really starts. You may wonder how it is that I have such an accurate count until the middle of May. It's not that I am really counting the days to strawberry season. I mean - I am... but that would be weird... but I am due that week with our second baby - so therefore the countdown is really easy to remember b/c it's about the same time.

Of course - that means that Henry (my dad) will likely be MIA from the field and market some during the first week - or maybe he just won't meet the baby until after the picking and selling is done - but whatever the case it's an exciting time. If you see him at the market during the first week and he's beaming... you'll know why and can ask to see pictures... I'm sure he'll have them ready to show off.

So - today's countdown - 8.5 weeks to go... until berries that is :)

Strawberry Fields Forever... Almost.

Well - back in the fall (September to be exact) there were days of activity plowing, and preparing the soil for pulling the strawberry beds. This is what the pulled beds look like before the plants are put in.

The beds are pulled in perfectly prepared soil using a tractor and this weird thing (that's the real name for the attachment as far as I know) that gets pulled behind it. Oh - I'm sorry - that's what I call Trey who rides on the weird thing sitting down to push the bed maker into the dirt. The machine is really quite impressive to watch. It lifts the dirt to build the bed and shape it, lays irrigation tube along the top of the bed and under the plastic which it also rolls out and tucks back in as it drives along the rows. Trey says it's a lot of work riding with your hands behind your back and that it is exhausting at the end of the day. I'm sure it is - I get a cramp just looking at him - but imagine what it'd be like if we didn't have this machine. About a week after we pull beds - the plants arrive and are planted. It's really neat to watch.

Of course - my afternoon was spent taking a few pictures of the men working and then enjoying the rockers on the front porch and a few apples with mom and my sweetheart. She finally learned to appreciate raw fruit this year... at the very end of fruit season. Oh well - that's another reason to look forward to spring!

Anyway - I show you these old pictures to tell you - I have no current pictures of the field - but it is currently covered with fabric (we call it row covers). They were put on with good, old fashioned muscle and man power (and some woman and teenage power) in January to serve as frost and freeze protection for the plants and also to force the plants into an earlier bloom and growth as the days start to get warmer. It is a lot of work to pull these covers b/c they're long, heavy and it's always windy when you have to mess with them - so we hope to not have too many cold nights after we remove them.

So - there's your fall/winter strawberry lesson for the week. More to come - and hopefully more pictures also!

Rain, Sleet, Snow - I'm Ready for Spring!

Though the snow hasn't slowed down my little girl lately, I am ready for winter to be over. How 'bout you? At Gramling Farms - the rain and snow is much appreciated in filling up the ponds and ground with water to help us get ready for spring. The guys are finishing some winter projects like building fence for customers and some indoor wood working.

Our freezer and pantry is getting to the back and bottom from all the veggies we put up last year - and we're ready for more! Nothing is easier - or tastes better - than having your own veggies (canned or frozen) to pull out all winter long. It makes the best soup, side dishes and sauces for your meals - and is much more "bank account friendly" than buying it all winter.

We're thinking ahead for berry season because it is only about 9.5 weeks away and are already thinking about strawberries on cereal, pies, ice cream and pound cake and of course... making jelly and jam with the leftovers. Get excited! It's almost time!

Hello Blog Land. It's been too long. I know the winter has been cold, long, and rainy - and according to the ground hogs last week - we have 6 more weeks of winter - but not to worry. Spring is coming!

We are gearing up at Gramling Farms. In (probably) mid April we will open with home grown broccoli and our yearly favorate, Strawberries! We will also have garden supplies, hanging baskets and bedding plants.

We have made some refreshing changes to our website to start the season - and will keep it updated (and do better about blogging) so that you always have the most current information.

A quick note - we have fresh, farm eggs for sale - all year long! For information about that - contact Ruba Nix @ 864.809.3135 to arrange to get yours. The prices are $2.25/dozen or $3/flat (30 eggs).

Berries, Baskets and Bushels of Fun

We've got plenty of strawberries at the market this week so if you've missed out this year, you need to come on by. We also have fresh hanging baskets and fern to bring a touch of spring to your front porch or window. We've got some spring produce (potatoes, onions, tomatoes, etc...) and also farm raised eggs.

There is a lot going on at the farm and we're just getting started!
