Taking The First Step

Assuming you are a novice, we'll take it from the top. Chances are good that your home is filled with a diverse medley of furnishings, art, accents and accessories that have been collected over time.

To create the perfect designer look, you want to first consider the purpose for each room. Deciding how you want it to look, meaning your personal tastes and perference; while keeping in mind the features that can and can’t be changed, and finally, the budget you have available.

Start With The Key Elements

The success of a room’s design lies in the balance you create. The basics of good design are proportion, balance, contrast, rhythm, pattern/texture and harmony. Knowing how these elements work together will help you design your space so that it’s not only beautiful, but comfortable and functional as well.

Proportion

Scale is one of the most important things to consider when creating the look of a room. A room that is proportioned correctly will feel welcoming while an incorrectly portioned room will just feel crowded and unfriendly. The trick is to match pieces in terms of their scale.

A large overstuffed sofa needs an equally large end table or coffee table; otherwise, these accents simply disappear as the sofa dwarfs them proportionally. When considering scale, look to the other rooms in your home for furniture that may be a better fit with the focal pieces you have in your room.

Balance

When creating balance, there’s two ways to go here. The first is symmetrical design, where everything is perfectly balanced. With symmetrical design, there’s roughly two of everything or items are mirrored in the room. For instance, one chair is placed exactly opposite another one just like it.
While this creates balance, it can also make a room look static and lacking any visual interest or energy. Experienced designers use asymmetry to create this interest.

Objects balance well because they are judged by their visual weight, not pairings. For instance, you may have a large sofa on one side of the room that is balanced by two large overstuffed chairs with an accent table in the middle and floor lamp behind. These pieces balance the sofa visually, even though they aren’t equal in size or shape. The design works because there is balance in the asymmetrical layout of the furniture.

Contrast

Imagine walking into a white room with white carpet and white furniture. Pretty boring, huh? Contrast helps draw the eye around a room through the intelligent use of color. Bold use of colors creates energy while the use of muted shades in complementary tones creates calm.

The more contrast you create, the easier it is for the human eye to follow the intended design of the room, moving visually from one space to another, guided by the use of color and contrast.

Rhythm

While creating contrast with the use of light and dark tones can be effective, it can also create boredom. To keep the room connected, you want to use rhythm. This means reusing specific colors, patterns, textures or themes throughout the room.

Pick a couple main colors and repeat them in different ways in your paint scheme, fabrics and accents.

Pattern & Texture

As the eye moves about a room, it picks up specific patterns. These are grouped together, so a blue wall is combined with a striped piece of fabric that has the same blue in it.

Patterns that don’t fit create conflict in the mind, compromising the appearance of the space. Again, you want to pick one or two primary patterns or textures and vary them within the color palette you’ve already created for the room. Right alongside the elements of contrast and rhythm in home decorating is pattern/texture.

Harmony

If you’ve ever heard three singers sing different parts that sound amazing together, then you already know what harmony is. The same is true for the harmony in your home. Different colors, different designs and different proportions combine to create a new look that was never there before, just as new notes are created by singers singing three different parts.

The room is suddenly complete. It has a look that if you remove just one element, won’t have that harmonic feel to it any longer. When you’ve achieved harmony, you’ve achieved your design goals.

American Girl Julie Doll Bed Dream Makeover

Julie is likely one of American Girl Doll's most popular, award winning and sought after dolls and your American Girl Doll collection is likely to be consider incomplete without her.

Julie is one of American Girl's period dolls. She is representative of the 1970's when women's independence and recognition in the work place and the political scene begin to take rise. More on her story can be found in the American Girl "Meet Julie Book" Volumes 1 Thur 6.

Many women during this time period began seeking entrepreneurship; starting businesses and career paths. Julie's story is in part the inspiration for our Dream Doll Bed Makeover. We encourage you to take each and every opportunity to allow your little decorator to develop her skills. Below we have the beautiful and well constructed doll bed from American Girl.

The bedding, linens, pillows, and canopy are bright and colorful. The colors are vibrant, varied, and consistent. It's all a magnificent job that fits Julie and her time period.

However, we wanted to allow our very own little decorator to have fun with the original bed to make changes, suggestions, and let her imagination soar. Our little decorator is already a huge fan of American Girl Dolls so this project was easy, fun, and educational all at the same time. Below is the outcome of the already well constructed American Girl Doll Bed.

The transformation began with changing out the orange canopy for some of our little decorator's favorite colors, pink and white. She thought it would be best to keep the same shape and design of the original doll bed canopy and only limit the change to the fabric texture and colors.

Our little decorator then decided on a textured fabric containing rose buds for the bed spread and pillow shams. For the bed spread and pillow sham she chose a beautiful and soft bright pink and for the neck roll she decided on another one of favorite colors fuchsia in which she had Julie to present in the picture. Our little decorator also wanted to maintain some of the doll bed's original pillows and accessories. As a result the orange pillow and the multi colored beads remain.

Although, ranching has changed over the years where as trains have taken to the plains, and wagons have been traded in for pick up trucks, and in some cases horses have been replaced by all terrain vehicles resulting in the annual trail ride becoming more of a tradition which is alive and well.

The trail rides of today are vastly diverse, encompassing just about every walk of life. Trail Riders of today range from bankers, children, and fire fighters to the actual modern day cowboys and girls.
The trail rides are exciting, and entertaining. The trail riders enjoy the opportunity to interact with family and friends and experience the outdoors much like the days of yesterday year with the exception of a few modern electronic gadgets and devices.

Labor Day Holiday Weekend Marking The End Of Summer!

So long to the hot, sometimes humid and sometimes muggy weather. While some of us complained and hid from the sun; others enjoyed and took in some of the rays and little Vitamin D.

Ahh Spring Break

It's Spring Break, and while the kids are away enjoying the coast, lake, or bay we can stay at home and be free to maintain a clean house and play.

Yes, I'm fully aware of the sometimes daunting task of Spring Cleaning, which I totally love. Who can't get excited about having the house to yourself and the full uninterrupted and unchallegened reduction of clutter.

When the family returns they won't miss any of the unused clutter that the so dearly cling to. Those worn out shoes in the back of the closet or those magazines that haven't been viewed for months. While they are dancing to the tunes on the beach I will making things clean and neat marching to my own beat.

Yes, this my time to dress my walls and windows that currently have less on them than the beach goers themselves. I will start with my sofa and flooring to develop my color scheme and fabric choice. The flooring will be most dominant as sofas have much shorter life spans.

However, the sofa is relevant and plays a major role in the selection of my window treatments.
Not so much the color but more the style.

The sofa type will generally lead me in the proper direction when it comes to style, whehter it's causal, formal, traditional, or eclectic.

Sofas will also influence the texture of your fabric selection. Silk, suede, and velvet are always excellent compliments to leather sofas; while upholstered sofas will provide the most latitude and the greatest ranges of fabrics such as chenille, cotton, or linen.

Finally, I will allow my door handles, knobs, stair railings, lighting fixtures, and ceiling fans to assist me in the selection of my drapery hardware. I will pay attention to what is present in my room as the last thing that I would like to do is ignore the obvious signs and be forced to reinvest and change out my home's hardware to allow my window treatments to work cohesively.

Once complete, family and friends are sure to appreciate the warm, and comfort of my window treatments and time that I spent working on my room during my Spring Break! I hope that you and your family enjoy your Spring Break as much I enjoy mine.

The union of two pharmacist.

While she was persistent in positioning herself for the medical field, he did not decide until after a few years into college. While their paths, interests, and schools appeared to be very different, they both discovered many similarities from the number of siblings in each of their families to the fairly close proximity of their childhoods growing up.

She has been fellowshipping in the same church for more than twenty years which was located just a stones throw away from the playground that he spent many afternoons as a child. So once married he became apart of her church family as he was unwilling to up root her.

While he’s been practicing pharmacy for nearly twelve years she's celebrating her eighth year. During their five years of marriage they have started their own family that encompasses an one year old Madison and a three year old Allison. The completion of their family is still to be determined as there is hope for a son.

I am a Woman who loves beautiful things, and my passion is Jesus the Lord, my family and my home. I have always been inspired by Martha Stewart's saying "It's a good thing!"

For me she is saying " that good home decor offers much to be enjoyed"! Martha Stewart has added so much to my life as a mother and wife. She has enhanced my journey with excitement and joy!

Laundry is not my favorite chore, but when I think about the words "It's a good thing!" I think of beautiful towels folded so perfectly, and in an instant, I get excited to fold them just as a luxury hotel would.

Just to know they'll be waiting for my husband after he's has enjoyed a nice long bath or shower makes me enjoy the effort that goes into the perfect fold of each bath towel. I think that every wife should be able to create a space for her family that says's you are from a special place.

Additionally, I also love Mrs. Kathy Womack! My heart melted while visiting her Austin Gallery where I was lost until the gallery found me. I was blown away by each pair of lovey Beautiful Drapery and rich paint colors pallets and wall treatments.

I took advantage of my opportunity to pick up three of her paintings in Austin a few years back.

Not seeing the difference does not always justify not paying the difference! This especially applies when it comes to beautifully done custom drapery.

The following are the top five under-appreciated things about custom drapery:

"A picture is worth a thousand words." Unfortunately, with beautifully done custom drapery, that saying doesn't quite apply. July 4th Independence Day Celebrations

The July 4th Independence Holiday is one of the largest celebrations of the year. This holiday is widely celebrated outdoors since it's summer and the skies are generally clear. Most states and cities generally offer some level of a fireworks displays as long as weather permits.

While many families get together for backyard poolside barbeque's and cold refreshing drinks. The gatherings are likely to run throughout the day from early morning to very late into the evening as the fireworks displays are best viewed at night.

In the heat of the summer there is no shortest of light peering through your windows. Particularly the two story Texas sized windows. The bigger the better or the bigger the window the bigger the utility cooling bill.

Who says that Dads and Grads can't enjoy a Happily Ever After Home? Yes it's that time of the year for the celebrating of our new graduating class. So many have work very hard for these memorable moments. So in an effort to make the most of this special time and milestone in their life, we will host celebrations to show our graduates how proud we are of their accomplishments and set the tone for our expectations of them to not just cross over the stage with the diploma but to cross over from partial responsibility to full responsibility.

Maybe not all at once, but at a good and steady pace. So our party will be a bit more sophisticated than celebrations of past. All our decorations may even seem to be more formal and corporate as we are sending a message in the festivities that the corporate world is ready and waiting for you. Along with landlords and utility companies.

Of course we are ready to get started with assisting them to make furniture selections and offer decorating tips that they are sure to reject. A special day of public acknowledgement and appreciation! I’m sure that many would agree that one day set aside to acknowledge and show appreciation for mothers is hardly enough. William and Kate to be named Duke and Duchess

It's official! Prince William marry's his bride Kate whom now desires to be known as Catherine.

These newly weds will be now known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The royal family announced this shortly before the wedding which should avoid giving the newest member of the royal family Duchess Catherine any title that would implicitly compare her to Diana, Princess of Wales.

Yes this was a wedding of all wedding and sure to be recorded in history this way and modeled for many years to come if not longer. From the ring to the carriage ride. Some many little princesses around the world will hold on to this fairy tale of a nuptial.

Of course, this is just happily ever after home's cup of tea. From the ring, dresses, to the hats, all so royal and whimsical. We simply love the uniforms and the dignitary. All so formal and adorned and well appointed.

Toddler Has A Zebra Ballerina Princesses Tea Party!

We made it! The party is done and it was a success! So many elements to the Zebra Ballerina Princesses Tea Party!

Selecting a party planner prove to be the most beneficial, to the entire process. The planner was punctaul, efficient, and detailed in every aspect of the party for our toddler right down to the labels for each of the hot pink sippy cups. Which I found to be valuable as they are little people and of course who would want their little girls pretty outfit soaked with liquids.

The hot pink sippie cups were a perfectly fitting, and coordinated well with the little princesses' tiaras and zebra stripped wings. There was a mural that carried the theme of the Zebra Princess Ballerina Tea Party.

The theme of the party became so varied do to our attempts to blend the toddler's zebra inspired room decor which was one of her largest birthday gifts, which included a zebra cowhide rug, zebra comforter, pillow, and the most beautifully done custom drapery.

Many of the girls arrived with adorable ballerina tutu skirts that were simply breathtaking. With the assistance of the party planner we were able to introduce the Tea Party element by bringing in plastic formal Disney tea sets. The party planner thoughts were that the Disney tea sets would allow the girls to enjoy tea time while simutamously eliminating the concerns of damaging the more fagile tea sets.

In the years to come the girls will be able to transition to more fine china such as The Mud Pie Tea Set pictured above. This was one of the birthday gifts purchased by Mommie and Daddy from the Chic Baby located in Houston, TX 281-397-8700

OR, Mommie's favorite collection by Royal Albert, Pattern, Old Courntry Rose, one of the most high collected pattern in the world..

The birthday hat could only be used as a prop, seeing how the 1 year olds seem to be disagreeable to wearing it for any extended amount of time. The party planner exercised her creativity when it came to placing many of the treasured items, that were purchased so long ago when the theme had not been quite established.

If there is to be a princesses, then there has to be a throne, and at this Zebra Princess Ballerina Tea Party, there was one that was completly outfitted with it's very own black and white tutu.

The Party Planner provided a large cardboard castle and washable colors in which the little girls had a blast coloring in washable colors. This turned out to be a great, safe, and fun activity for the little girls.

Finally, the party planner had the little princesses to sit around indian style for the reading of a popular Tea Time book. She simply enchanted them as she read so beautifully to them.

We adorned the Birthday Girl with a custom made zebra birthday shirt with the numeral 1 on it all trimmed out in pink, provided by the party planner as apart of her packages. The outfit was completed with the noisy squeaky shoes by Moo Shoe, which I found at the Chic Baby in Houston, TX

The birthday girls' God Mother found this zebra pinyata for party, which I personally feel in love with.

Desserts, desserts, and more desserts. Total of five different bakers for pastries. Lemon bars from Sweet Luxuries here in Houston, http://www.mysweetluxury.com/ Ms Heather, delivered them to the door, each one with a little note of the words from Psalms 23, which was a big part of our little girls birthday party. We did our best to include it on anywhere it could be printed, from the invitations to the Thank You notes. The Cookie Art Cart here in Houston http://www.thecookieartcart.com/ , Mrs. Janice delivered the most beautiful numeral 1 shaped cookies to the door. The party planner Mrs. S. Monique, provided the Zebra marshmallows, brownies, fruit skewers. Too many cupcakes to count, some provided by the bakery at, Kroger Grocery Store in hot pink, white, and of course a little black. We purchase the cake from the bakery at HEB in Spring, TX which would be a total suprise as the baker had no sample of what type of cake we wanted, only a picture that we provided. Although, there was no evidence of them every making a cake that resembling any of the pictures we provided, it turned out great; both the main cake and the smash cake. The custom made hot pink and black gift basket which included baby wipe case covered in Zebra, trimmed in hot pink, bib, baby doll, and blanket with her name, and so much more was provide by Mrs. Tammy Silva 281-250-6616 in Pearland,TX was one of the birthday girl's more personalize gifts, and will always be a reminder of her very first birthday.

Mission Accomplished, with the assistance of the party planner and Daddy working behind the scenes to carry out all the little details like the wooden tea pot cut out for the front yard, the tear down, and clean up afterwards, and the returning of all borrowed and rented items, Mommie was able to provide the birthday party that she had been dreaming of for her little baby birthday girl. So much Thanks goes to our fanatasic party planner Mrs S. Monique here in Houston, TX, she blew my mind with the sandwiches in the shape of a Crown for our little Prinesses. I hope one day she can show me how she did that, so I can have them for Hope in her lunch box when she goes to school, to make sure she remembers she is Mommies little Princess along with her other two sisters, and two Prince brothers.
