CAIRO: Political art in Egypt faces hardships, but activists and artists are hopeful that their struggles can be met and overcome in the post-revolution atmosphere.

On Monday, Egyptian artists gathered to discuss the ongoing struggles of producing political art during the revolution.

The British Council in Cairo, in collaboration with the HaRaKa Project, hosted the new cultural event titled “CriticaliTea”.

CriticaliTea is a series of sessions and talks open to the public, geared towards creating dialogue between artists from the performing and visual arts sector and intellectuals from other disciplines. All to create a better mode of dialogue and understanding.

The first session, titled ‘Performing the Political’, focused on the relationship between artistic expression and the revolution. Since the start of the Egyptian revolution, many artists have struggled to incorporate the political developments into their art.

All of the artists that shared at the talk agreed that they felt a certain pressure to express the revolution in their work. The constant pressure of creating a film on the revolution especially frustrated a young female Egyptian filmmaker. Inspiration, she said, cannot be forced.

There are some who believe that now is the time to create political art because we are living through critical changes.

However, there are also artists, like the ones attending CriticaliTea, who want to be a human first before an artist. It is difficult, they said, to connect with both worlds, as they demand unique types concentration and emotion.

The same filmmaker reflected on the time she was lit on fire while filming a protest in Tahrir. It wasn’t until she got home and re-watched the footage that she was reminded of being set on fire. While she was absorbed in her artistic world, she lost site of what was going on around her.

Creating art during the revolution has been difficult for these artists.

Moataza Salah, a performing artist, needs more time to reflect and process the revolution before she can reenact the event. She feels that darkness and traumatizing personal experiences cannot be easily translated. Salah has not worked since the revolution.

“The first 18 days ties itself with a ribbon and lends itself to art. I was inspired to create a beautiful musical about the revolution. But now I am not the same person and I cannot do the musical,” she said.

While these artists have difficulty producing political art immediately, it will be a matter of time before beautiful, moving, and inspirational art is created.

While there is hope for effective political art in the future, many expressed concern for the future of the performing and visual art community in Egypt.

As the Muslim Brotherhood takes control of the country, artists fear crackdowns and increasing censorship.

The New Reality

While we witness great changes in the political scene in Egypt and the Arabic Speaking Region since the Arab Spring has started, we witness great changes in the nature of art, and in the dynamics that govern artistic and cultural practices. We witness new economies being born, new markets for particular representations, new frames of presenting and representing, we witness the potential rise of censorship and violence towards artists, and the threat of actual violence a like we just saw in Tunisia, and we witness a redefinition of the term 'political'.

And, like every institution is comprised of people, and when people are interrupted by history they must question about their practices, their positions, and what they generate and contribute, HaRaKa's team spent the last year in research, structural development and understanding of the colossal moment, we are living in, without immediately responding to a transient nascent new market for the so-called 'political work' that is justified by the revolutions, and that commodifies the revolution, its meaning, its essence, its symbols.

With the birth of a New Political Reality, great dreams and great doubts rise to everyone's minds and hearts.

HaRaKa's team would like to announce that the way the project has been engaged in developing and pushing the boundaries of what movement, dance and performance are framed to be within our contemporary reality in Egypt and the Arabic Speaking Region, that the project shall continue to do even more so. With the birth of a New Political Reality HaRaKa promises to assess and respond to needs in the artistic scene in Egypt, regardless of setbacks or impediments and to constantly be informed about its practices through the ever-so-changing reality and the new identities that are being forged. HaRaKa promises to be engaged actively to defend freedom of expression and the presence of the body in the arts through collaboratively working with its local partners in Egypt and the Region.

It is with no doubt that the current moment is a challenge to the artist as a profession just as much as it is a challenge to the artist as a political subject. Yet, it is within the arts that we continue dreaming, even through moments of doubt. It is with arts that we assert on the importance of imagining and of rethinking reality and proposing alternative modes of seeing, of doing, and of thinking. It is the duty of artists to collectively be engaged with the current context, and to collectively produce systems of support to their practice, their colleagues and their community, and empower and inspire their communities.

HaRaKa announces its new interdisciplinary program for development and research that manifests in its largest international Dance festival that shall showcase work from Egyptian and Arab artists locally and internationally, a new pan-Arab archive project for Contemporary performative practices, a series of critical encounters taking places over tea, and a line of publications that work on generating a strong body of critical texts around contemporary movement based artistic practices in the Region.

With every great moment of change there are dreams and doubts. And, what we artists should do is to justkeep working, since artists deal with nothing but hardships in every context they operate within.

Hosted at the British Council Cairo, and organized by HaRaKa, Criticalitea aims to bring people to think together, raise critical questions, while enjoying a cup of tea.

CriticaliTea start on the 25th of June at 7 pm with a session titled "Performing the political". HaRaKa will be inviting artists, art critics and political sciences specialists.

Open Source Dance, Tilburg-Holland - Call for Applications

INCUBATE presents:

OPEN SOURCE DANCE

Space that must be filled, the dance program of Incubate, aims to give the audience and community of Incubate a new role as participant. It offers the Incubate audience a stage to show their own dance to the Incubate visitors. The (unwritten) laws of dance and theatre are hard to work with in a spontaneous way. Together with dance curator Sonja Augart, we are looking for a way to offer new insights in this discipline. By creating a rigid form of presentation, the stage is free for whoever wants to use it!

Anything goes, there’s no boundaries between academic styles, folk dance or urban/street/hip hop styles, as long as it fits the dogma we’ve created for the presentation. Performances cannot be over 10 minutes, only a standard light setting is permitted, there’s a maximum of four dancers on the floor at the same time and there’s only a single CD player. Change-over will not exceed 15 minutes and usage of props or décor is not permitted.

The program will take place on September 16, 17 and 18th at Theatre De NWE Vorst in Tilburg. Space that must be filled is a dance program where everyone is invited to give their own insights on dance and movement. The audience can walk in and out of the presentation room, they can choose to stay for a little while or come see a specific performance.

Collaboration unpacked: Cultural activists and artists discuss change

Cultural activists, artists and critics convened for two days late last week to discuss collaboration in cultural production and change as a precursor to redefining positions in a conference organized by HaRaKa, a dance development and research collective.

Though not a conference on the 25 January revolution per se, its programmers recognized that the radical uprising that toppled the regime in Egypt highlights the notion of change and prompts a conversation about how it would unfold in art practice and collaborations in production processes.

Networking and network creation meetings are one such form of collaboration, where groups get together, sometimes responding to the unwritten agendas of their hosts, which are ultimately political. A regional case in point in is social media and digital activism hype, a construct mostly created by the anxiety of outsiders to appropriate the narrative by calling for "activists' meetings and "activists' networks." The process had its reverberations in disrupting a personal and autonomous quest of unpacking collective engagement with online spaces and its political transformation.

Angela Harutyunyan, an art critic, said that we are complicit too in such entrapments.

“Network is a symptom of attention deficiency disorder,” she said, indicating how one is present but not engaged, constantly interrogating a process of managing relations and subjectivities.

Stepping beyond such established relations, Ranwa Yehia, director of the Arab Digital Expression Foundation, spoke of the importance of being critical and lucid. Having herself conceived a "network" of Arab artists and techies concerned about the promotion of self-expression, she constantly negotiates the intricacies of outside factors, such as funding, in a process that develops mostly organically.

“How can we find a balance between protecting the initiatives that have started in the Arab world that are made of concerned and responsible people and engaging in the work they (funders) are doing, even if you have good intentions?”

Yehia is particularly wary of the notion of ‘creating need’ that is the product of such interventions and the internalization of such constructed needs.

In such a context, funding is an inevitable conversation and site of various critical discourses. As depicted in many other encounters, Western cultural funding is perceived as a post-11 September political strategy, although Harutyunyan extended it to a post-World War II American model of exporting tools of ideological influence. This consciousness becomes indispensible for cultural producers and renders the process of autonomous production a more complex one.

But past deliberate funding agendas, William Wells, director of the Townhouse contemporary art gallery, pointed to lack of knowledge as one of the problems of external funding.

“The funders are bankrupt in ideas. They sit in these meetings of cultural operators, or the diplomat politicians, and they have no idea where to put the money.”

The fact proposes a more politically proactive stance from potential recipients in dictating the direction of such funding endeavors.

Part of the lucidity of producers resides in politicizing their quest for funding. Ismail Fayed, an art critic, spoke about how art operates in a public context and therefore should receive public funding. While public funding in the context of Egypt may have been a luxury in terms of access, it was also a space laden with corruption and nepotism, and now there is a process of re-building where state funding can be reclaimed. This is a particularly enticing proposition given the fact that Egypt's Ministry of Culture reportedly has the second largest budget after the Ministry of Defense.

Hana al-Bayaty, an activist and writer, reiterated that state institutions should be reclaimed and re-appropriated. Such a plea has the potential to put an end to the closed binary of state cultural institutions as opposed to independent institutions, a binary that has led to many reductionist understandings of art practice in the country.

However, Fayed issued a reminder that calling on the public to fund the arts would have its own toll on the practice. “Is art a very limited and elitist practice, or would there be any public support for artistic practices that have been underground and ghettoized?  How do we make the public then fund this?”

The other question, inspired by Bayaty’s comment, is how state funding is pitched as actual public funding. In other words, how public funding can refrain from dictating a subservient practice to the state and become truly public. Here, Harutyunyan proposed crystallizing research as an important practice for cultural producers that can seek public support.

Besides shedding light on the complexities of collaboration and funding in art practice, the meeting touched on a parcel of a practice by hosting director Tamer al-Saeed. Saeed is the director of “The Last Days of the City”, a docu-drama that has been struggling to see light due to constant funding pitfalls, and hence, has been in the pipeline for several years. In the process, its crew had to make a film in constantly changing production conditions.

Saeed used the city as his set, where the spontaneity of its flow served his low budget but was also a challenge to the art of the film. The awakening that was the revolution did not prompt him to change the line of the film, for it is about the last days of the city, where the point of departure is apocalypse. His affecting and engaging introduction to a film we haven’t seen on the niceties of production and autonomy of creative expression became a vivid illustration of the theoretical conversations mentioned above.

After meeting with the artists on 29th of April, the artists and the project partners that were present (Marie Christine Andre and Cristiano Carpanini representing Officina, Toni Cots representing L'animal L'esquna/CRA'P, Adham Hafez and Ahmed Moez representing HaRaKa) unanimously agreed to cancel the last night of performance.

Such decision was arrived at after deliberating with the concerned parties in light of the latest conceptual, critical and political challenges that the local host (HaRaKa) faced and that the artists were witness to and thus agreed to not hold the last night of the event but to instead to hold a private artists talk, in between the artists of the program and the present producers/partners.

Force Majeure, a festival of many performances

The size and architecture of the floor space at the Townhouse gallery gives it a lot of scope to mould and create a certain ambience. On 27 April, on the opening night of the project Force Majeure, the space was separated into different sections by various patterned blankets hung from the wall. This helped with the concept of having multiple performances in one night.

As I enter I find several pieces of video art and a welcome from Adham Hafez wearing a gallabeya (a traditional Egyptian garment), who is one of the organisers and introduces himself as “the other.” Cushions are strewn around and further along grass covers the floor.

Force Majeure, is a part of a larger project called ‘Miniatures Officinae’ which started in 2008 and ends in 2013 in Marseilles. The project, supported by the EU, is a collaboration of several countries in the Euro-Med region, with each country hosting the project for a year.

This year, Haraka Dance Development and Research are the hosts. Ahmed Moez another of the organisers, describes the idea behind the miniatures.

“Miniatures are a type of art, where a very small piece of work conveys a deeper meaning,” Moez explained. “It goes back to the Ottoman period,” he continued and said that this type of art is mainly for paintings. “This was the challenge for our artists,” he said. “They had to turn the idea into performance art pieces.”

The theme of this year’s project was Love and Otherness, however with the recent political events in the region, the title was changed to Force Majeure.

Force Majeure is a legal term for the conditions in which contracts are null and void, including war, riots, martial law, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. "That meant we were released from our contract,” said Adham Hafez, “yet we still went ahead as we were so interested in it.”

The eight participating artists, (two Tunisians couldn’t make it to Egypt), are from Spain, Italy, France and Egypt. Four performances will take place each night.

Christophe Haleb one of the artists, choreographed a piece in the grass section. Several men moved around in slow motion, sometimes lying on the grass and stroking it and communicating with others through hand and body movements.

“The part I enjoyed most about working on this project is meeting young people from the region,” said Haleb. “The idea was to show the variations of distance and what intimate and non-intimate spaces entail,” he continued. “What is privacy and what is public space were the ideas we tapped into.”

During the performance a young man named Hassan Farid repeated the words, “If I were there.” Farid later explained he meant Tahrir Square, the epicentre of the recent Egyptian revolution, as he was out of the country. Enthusiastically he told me that this is his first performance art experience.

Rhuena a former gymnast, performed an act of different acrobatic movements, where she stayed in each position for a long time.

“When people perform acrobatics,” she said, “their movements are so fast you can hardly see the movement itself, their facial expression and the tension of their muscles. It’s only in photographs that you see that.”

During her research she looked at many photographs of gymnasts for inspiration. One of the most important was a still-shot from a documentary about sky jumping by the German filmmaker Werner Herzog.

Video works included Love Dance by Shaymaa Aziz, an animated piece of charcoal on paper that showed two lovers and the awkward and hesitant movements they make when touching amongst the prying eyes of society.

Leo Castro a Spanish artist, took footage of several individuals around Cairo while narrating their possible thoughts and worries.

The project Force Majeure is an artistic encounter that tries to reassemble elements of an event previously engineered by scripted regional politics of exchange, taking a position from which to look at those elements and exchange modes. Through various forms, this encounter is processed publicly.

Force Majeure was conceived by Adham Hafez and Ismail Fayed with the space designed by architect Samir Kordy. The project is produced and organized in Cairo by HaRaKa Dance Development and Research, and is supported by the Townhouse Gallery, Goethe Institute and the Spanish Embassy’s Cultural Affairs Section. In 2009 the HaRaKa Dance Research and Development Project, then in its fourth year, began collaborating with international artists on a series of performances and projects called Force Majeur. The program, set to debut in Egypt in 2010, featured six new dance and performance pieces and four visual art pieces by artists from Italy, France, Tunisia, Turkey, and Spain, as well as Egypt. The topic, suggested by the French contingent, was “Love and Otherness,” and the overarching question, according to organizer Adham Hafez, was, “How can we curate democratically?”

Then, in December of 2010, the Tunisian revolution began, the artists from that country needed to rethink their submission, and the performances were delayed. When Egyptians began demonstrating in January 2011, the event was delayed even further. Now, Force Majeur is finally scheduled for 27-30 April at the Townhouse Gallery. In order to address the surprising manner in which the program itself was shaped and reshaped according to the regional changes, HaRaKa will hold a two-day conference called “Co-Changing Maps” on the 26 and 27 April, also at Townhouse.

Cultural and political activists, curators, festival programmers, journalists, artists, and anyone interested -- although Hafez, himself a dancer and choreographer, stresses that the conference should be “more talking than listening” -- will gather to discuss “change.” What does it mean and how can the cultural community react to it?

“Everyone is saying ‘change.’ We hope for change, but we just talk about change very abstractly,” Hafez said. He hopes that the conference will yield several more projects in a place where “in light of their political needs, the inhabitants are becoming more and more visible.” This visibility means that art can be used to break free from a mold dictated by politics -- past, present, and future -- ”the scripted politics of culture.”

Hafez previously described dance to Al-Masry Al-Youm as a way to use the human body as a “critical site or tool for self-expression.” In its first iteration following the 25 January revolution, HaRaKa will explore Hafez’s notion, as he described it in the same interview, that “Demonstrations lie in the performative realm. Protestors, including myself, are performing and physically embodying what they want to say.” Much like dancers take to the stage to express themselves, protesters took to the streets to call for change.

This analogy is, according to the press release, a main focus of Co-Changing Maps. “For longer than the past three decades the Arab World and the Middle East have existed and operated in an oppressive political milieu that was assisted and sustained by a network of specific interests that had very little to do with the true needs of the actual populations inhabiting the region,” it reads. HaRaKa cites a “cataclysmic rupture” in the way the region is viewed abroad and by its residents, and hopes to explore that in two ways: on “change” and on “maps.”

HaRaKa’s most recent dance seminar was held in late January, a week prior to the protests that started the revolution. Although that program, which “reflected on choreographic practices within cultures that escape contemporary discourse and aesthetics,” was pre-revolution, it displayed HaRaKa’s commitment to examining, discussing, and redefining accepted modes of discourse in dance. It’s that same commitment that will make the forthcoming program a revealing cultural response to the changes in the region.

More than that, the conference leading up to the performance is a way to attract an audience who might be a little distracted by the same politics Force Majeur aims to comment on. Hafez, a proponent of art as discussion, seems to understand that others need to be convinced of this notion. “If I put a poster on the street now saying, come and watch ten new dance performances and films, no one would come. The only people who would be interested are those who want to distract themselves totally,” he said. And the point of HaRaKa is not to distract, but to engage.

2009 a partnership contract is signed, uniting five institutions from five Mediterranean cities under the umbrella of a “Miniatures” project, supported by the European Union’s “Third Countries” collaborations exchange schemes. December 2010: a revolution erupts in Tunis. January 2011: a revolution erupts in Egypt. Within a state of emergency, and under martial law previous agreements are rendered legally and conceptually obsolete. “Force Majeure” is an artistic position/ encounter that tries to reassemble elements of an event previously engineered by regional scripted politics of exchange, and takes a stance to look at those elements and exchange modes processing this publicly through different platforms.
“Force Majeure” rejects the position of culture and the arts as a commodity offered on smoothed grounds, or as a propagandist political backdrop. It prefers the friction generated within a turbulent socio-political condition as a host, hoping to reassert the position of arts within the current Egyptian reality as a necessary space for alternative political thinking and the artistic moment of encounter as a site for reworking preset givens, or at least as an invitation to step into possibilities.

“Force Majeure” comes as a direct reaction to a contingent political reality, it happens in a context in which an artistic collaboration was supposed to happen with a specific political and production parameters within a no longer existing political reality. This forced the local host, the artistic partners and other involved parties to question the meaning of their position towards each other and towards this so-called collaboration.
The artists were commissioned through a network of five partners: Officina (Marseilles), HaRaKa (Cairo), L’Animal A L’Esquena (Barcelona), El Teatro (Tunis) and Indisciplinarte (Terni). The project “Miniatures Officinae” originally conceived by Officina took the relationship to the other as a departure point, and the Miniature as a form of interest. Miniatures being a historical artifact for the region and traditional format of documenting, illustrating, preserving, perpetuating not only national narratives but narratives about the other was chosen as the form and format for this artistic production process. It thus became an operative concept that allowed the artists to explore its meaning and possibilities, developing such strategies as minimalism, condensation, illustration, abstraction, and over-identification.

The artists used the Miniatures in a way of questioning if there are really shared historical narratives between those partners, whether this relationality could be expressed through this common medium? If this medium is valid at all?

The different ways through which artists responded was an indication of the evolving relationality and the continuous changing notion of otherness as the project unfolded through residencies within the Mediterranean region.
Egypt was chosen as a site for these works to be presented in 2009. In the light of a new unfolding reality and clear conceptual challenges to all kinds of artistic practices and partnerships working in Egypt, the miniatures project now comes under the clause, ' Force Majeure'

The very roles of its partners unpremeditatedly redefined and irreversibly changed. This process comes by 'force' of the events that are taking place across the Middle East region, the so-called 'Other', and raises the question of how valid are the previous assumptions about otherness and collaborating with the other and whether or not these assumptions and perceptions hold true in light of continuing changing reality.
The partners in this project seek to critically engage with this reality and support the position that art practices must adapt and evolve by continually questioning and problematizing the ways and contexts in which they are created.

"قُوّة قَاهِرَة"

"تم توقيع عقد شراكة فنية يجمع بين خمس مؤسسات من دول متوسطية في عام 2009، و ذلك تحت مسمى "مشروع المنمنمات" المدعوم من برنامج الاتحاد الأوروبي لدعم التعاون و التبادل مع دول العالم الثالث.
في ديسمبر 2010 ، اندلعت ثورة في تونس.
في يناير 2011 ، اندلعت ثورة في مصر.
في ظل "حالة طوارئ" و تحت "الحكم العسكري" تعتبر كل الاتفاقات السابقة لاغية و باطلة. "قُوّة قَاهِرَة" هو لقاء فني يحاول استجماع شتات عمل تم تصميمه وفقا لسياسات تبادل ثقافي بين دول هذه "المنطقة" تم إعدادها مسبقا ، و يأخذ موقفا للنظر في عناصر هذا العمل و آليات تنفيذه بشفافية من خلال سُبُل مختلفة. يأخذ "قُوّة قَاهِرَة" موقفا برفض الرأي القائل بأن الفن و الثقافة يمكن أن تشكلا سلعة، أو أداة لتسويق أفكار سياسية بعينها، في الوقت الذي يفضل فيه الاحتكاك مع واقع ثقافي و اجتماعي مضطرب،و يأمل هذا الحدث في التأكيد على الفن كمساحة ضرورية لطرح طرق تفكير بديلة في الواقع السياسي المصري، و التأكيد أيضا على الفن كوسيلة لإعادة النظر في المُسَلّمات ، أو على الأقل النظر إليه كدعوة للانفتاح على الممكن.

"يأتي "قُوّة قَاهِرَة" كرد فعل مباشر لواقع سياسي دقيق، فالعمل كان من المفترض أن يحدث ضمن سياق انتهى واقعيا، سواء السياق السياسي أو سياق الإنتاج الفني، هذا "التغيير" أجبر المُضيفين و المؤسسات المشاركة –فنيا و غيره- على التساؤل عن معنى مواقفهم تجاه بعضهم و عن موقفهم تجاه هذا التعاون المُزعم.
تم اختيار الفنانين من خلال مجموعة تعاون فني مكوّنة من خمس شركاء هم "أوفيتشينا – مارسيليا(فرنسا)ا" و "حَ رَ كَ – القاهرة" و "لانيمالا لاسكينا – برشلونة(اسبانيا)" و "انديشيبلينارته – تيرني(إيطاليا)" و "التياترو – تونس"، بدأت في مراحلها الأولى من خلال "أوفيتشينا" الشريك الفرنسي. اتخذت هذه المجموعة "العلاقة بالآخر" كنقطة بدء ، و اختارت "المنمنات" كمَصَب للاهتمام."المنمنمات" تراث فني و تاريخي مهم لهذه "المنطقة" استُخدم في التأريخ و التوثيق و الشرح و الحفظ، و أيضا التخليد لرؤى، ليست قومية فقط و إنما عن النفس و عن "الآخر"، و لهذا اختيرت "المنمات" كشكل و كقالب لعملية الإنتاج الفنية هذه. و بذلك أصبحت "المنمنمات" هي المبدأ الذي انشغل الفنانين باستكشاف أبعاده و امكانياته، مطوّرين في ذلك استراتيجيات مختلفة مثل التصّغير و التكديس (التركيز) و الشرح و التجريد.

من خلال "المنمنمات" كفكرة و كأداة و كنوع فني، تساءل الفنانون عمّا إذا كان هناك حقّا رؤى تاريخية مشتركة بين الشركاء في هذا المشروع، و هل هذه الرؤى و العلاقات –ان وجدت- يمكن التعبير عنها من خلال استخدام هذا الوسيط المشترك؟
لقد شكّلت الاستجابات المغايرة لدى الفنانين لهذه الأفكار و الأطروحات معيارا يقيس العلاقة المتطورة باستمرار بين أبناء "المنطقة" و التغيير المستمر في فكرة "الآخر" ، و ذلك مع مرور الوقت و دخول المشروع في مرحلة الإقامات الفنية في المنطقة المتوسطية.
تم اختيار "مصر" كموقع لاستضافة هذا الحدث في عام 2009. في ضوءالواقع المتغير باستمرار، و مع التحديات القوية التي تواجهها الأنشطة الفنية و الأنشطة ذات التعاون المشترك مع دول من خارج المنطقة، في ضوء هذا الموقف يقع مشروع "المنمنمات" الآن تحت طائلة فقرة "قوة قاهرة".

على غير المتوقع، تغيرت أدوار الشركاء في هذا المشروع و اختلفت بشكل لا رجعة فيه. هذه العملية الفنية تلتقي اليوم مع التغيرات المفاجئة و الأحداث التي تتفجر في منطقة الشرق الأوسط، كما تلتقي مع "الآخر" المزعوم، كما تثير أسئلة عمّا إذا كانت الافتراضات السابقة عن "الآخر" و "التعاون مع الآخر" هي افتراضات مازالت صالحة حتى يومنا هذا، و عما ان كانت هذه الافتراضات و الأحكام المسبقة لا تزال صحيحة في ضوء التغيير المستمر في الواقع.
يسعى الشركاء في هذا المشروع إلى الارتباط بشكل "نقدي" مع الواقع المحيط، و دعم القول الداعي بأن تكون الممارسات الفنية قادرة على التكيّف من خلال التساؤل المستمر و مناقشة المشكلات التي تواجهها خلال عمليات الإبداع الفني مما يؤدي إلى تطوّرها بشكل صحي في النهاية."

Etymology | Change: alter, barter, exchange, bend, crook, turn…

Context | This conference comes at a critical junction in time and space where practice, theory and policy conflate and conflict. For longer than the past three decades the Arab World and the Middle East have existed and operated in an oppressive political milieu that was assisted and sustained by a network of specific interests that had very little to do with the true needs of the actual populations inhabiting this region, but had to do instead with serving certain alliances and certain distribution networks beyond the geography of the so-called Middle East. This “network” scripted and suspended change, in a way that aspired to gauge the possibility of cataclysmic and unforeseen ruptures, the generation of potent new thought, or of unstable grounds

Change of Context | Socio-demographic changes and unforeseen effects of certain developments reversed the course of history and created a cataclysmic rupture within the paradigm through which the Arab world has been viewed, from within or from a distance.

In a moment described by many analysts to be very similar to the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe, the Arab world succumbed to a wave of revolutions that swept away these ailing and aging regimes replacing impotent tissues with the physical presence of, or with the mere thought of, a new tissue of change

The conference works on two planes
On Change: Looking at what it could stand for historically, politically, culturally, or philosophically.
On maps and meshes: Addressing policy, practices, representation, objects, subjects and their positions. Addressing how maps of exchange, of survival or of hegemony are generated, utilized or short-circuited.

Through the brief examining of history as a context for policies and of the creation of maps or networks- where history is not an independent variable but rather one affected by multiple factors such as post-colonialism, post-capitalism, globality and supra-cyber awareness- and by inviting key figures in the fields of art theory, cultural policies, political science, law and culture making, the conference aims at generating thought, publishing texts and initiating processes of practice: on historical, cultural, and political constructs -that were/are being made - and how change breaks epistemological edifices across time and space, opens dense-information, redefines objects and positions, while addressing (re)presentation as a pivotal site in how these policies used to manifest, how policies or dramaturgies of exchange (or scripts that gauge change) co-author artistic processes, products, subjects positions and sometimes the frame of looking.

In the light of the so-called Arab Spring, how do we continue with these pre-manufactured cultural, artistic and political practices and maps that used to obscure the Arab subject (and perhaps the Mediterranean subject also), wondering are we witnessing the replay of old fetishisms and misconceptions, or could we exist in a new map of embodied subjects with articulated (even if fleeting) positions, needs, links and zones of possibilities.

أصل الكلمة "تغيير": غَيّر: بدّل ، حرّف ، هذّب.

سياق المؤتمر: يحدث هذا المؤتمر في توقيت و مكان بالغي الأهمية، حيث تختلط –و تتصارع- النظرية مع التطبيق مع السياسات الحاكمة لهذا الخليط (النظرية و التطبيق). لقد عاصر العالم العربي و منطقة الشرط الأوسط لأكثر من ثلاثة عقود حالة من القهر السياسي الذي ارتكز على دعائم لا علاقة لها بالحاجات الفعلية لأبناء هذه المنطقة، و لكنه كان يخدم تحالفات بعينها و هياكل اقتصادية موجّهة بعيدا عن اهتمامات المنطقة المسماة بـ "الشرق الأوسط". هذه الهياكل كانت تهدف إلى الحد من احتمالات حدوث التغييرات الجذرية المفاجئة ، و إلى تحجيم الجيل ذو الأفكار المؤثرة و الذي يقف على أرضية متغيرة دوما.

تغيير السياق: لقد أدّت التغييرات الديموغرافية و الاجتماعية التي حدثت في المجتمع ، بالإضافة إلى التأثيرالغير مرئي اللاحق لتطورات مجتمعية معينة، إلى تغيير مسار التاريخ و خلق تغييرات جذرية في القالب الذي وُضع فيه العالم العربي.
يخضع العالم العربي حاليا -في لحظة وُصفت بأنها مشابهة جدا لانهيار جدار الشيوعية في أوروبا الشرقية- إلى موجة من الاحتجاجات و الثورات التي تزيل الأنظمة الحاكمة المتهالكة الطاعنة في السن، و هي بذلك تقوم باستبدال أنسجة تالفة و شبه ميتة بأنسجة ممتلئة بالحياة .. هذا الاستبدال قد يكون فعليا –بتغيير الأشخاص و الأنظمة- و قد يكون استعاريا بتغيير الأفكار و التوجّهات المجتمعية و السياسية.

سيعمل المؤتمر على محورين:
-التغيير: محاولة استكشاف ما الذي قد يرمز إليه مفهوم التغيير تاريخيا و سياسيا و ثقافيا و فلسفيا.
-الخرائط و الشبكات: تناول السياسات و الممارسات الثقافية، و التمثيل الثقافي ، و وضع كل من "الأشياء" و "الأشخاص". تناول كيف يتم خلق خرائط التبادل الثقافي و خرائط البقاء أو الهيمنة الثقافية، و الاستفادة منها بل و إنهائها.

يهدف المؤتمر إلى خلق مجموعة من الأفكار، و نشر نصوصها، بالإضافة إلى بدء عملية اختبار التكوينات التاريخية و السياسية و الثقافية –التكوينات الموجودة بالفعل أو التي يتم بناؤها- و بحث كيف يهدم "التغيير" هياكل معرفية (إبستمولوجية) عبر الزمان و المكان ، و كيف يقوم "التغيير" بتفسير الكثافة المعلوماتية في بعض الأحيان و إعادة تشكيل الأشياء و مواضعها بالنسبة لبعضها، و ذلك من خلال:
- النظر إلى التاريخ و البحث فيه باعتباره سياق عمل "السياسات" و رسم خرائط التعاون الثقافي، و ذلك مع الوضع في الاعتبار أن التاريخ هو عامل متغير في هذه المعادلة حيث أنه يتأثر بشكل كبير بأفكار "ما بعد الاستعمار" و "ما بعد الرأسمالية" و "الاتجاه نحو العولمة" و الوعي المتشكل بمساعدة العوالم الافتراضية.
-دعوة شخصيات مهمة متخصصة في "السياسات الثقافية" و "النظرية الفنية" و علم السياسة و القانون و صناعة الثقافة.
كما يقوم المؤتمر ببحث كيف يقوم التغيير بتناول الأفكار و التصورات المسبقة كموضع محوري يظهر من خلاله تأثير هذه السياسات ، و كيف أن هذه السياسات أحيانا ما تتدخل في عملية الانتاج الفني و المنتح الفني، و كذلك في مواقع الأشخاص بالنسبة للأعمال الفنية و أيضا في كيف يتم تقديم هذه الأعمال.

في ضوء ما يُسمّى بـ "الربيع العربي" ، كيف يمكن أن نستمر في نفس الممارسات و السياسات التي اعتادت أن تحيط الشخصية "العربية" و "المتوسطية" بهالة من الغموض، و نتساءل هنا هل نحن نشهد استئنافا للمفاهيم المغلوطة القديمة, الهوس بحبس الشخصية العربية في قالب واحد أم أننا أمام فرصة لإعادة تشكيل هذه الخارطة لتحوي مواضع –و إن كانت متغيرة متحركة- لكل الأطراف و احتياجاتها و الارتباطات بينها و مناطق تأثيرها، بما يفتح الباب أمام جميع الاحتماليات لكل الأطراف.

Live performance by Leo castro - عرض أدائي حي للفنانة ليو كاسترو-اسبانيا

How do I link myself to the quality named “love” in people, places and situations in a context I am not familiar with?” With this position, the Spanish artist Leo Castro starts an exploration process with her body, other “loving bodies”, and a video camera as a principle tool, recording and processing fragments, short narratives, symbols and more. Through different modes of observation, different possibilities of self-positioning and displacement, the artist explores and presents her new “Miniature” that she developed in Egypt during her residency this December, hosted by HaRaKa Dance Development and Research.

This evening becomes a focus on the work of the Spanish artist "Leo Castro", working with live performance, choreography and visual media. It’s an exploration of the artist’s work aesthetics generally, and specifically as part of the "Miniatures Project". The presentation comes at the end of Leo Castro’s residency in Egypt, part of the “Miniatures Project”; a project organized in Egypt by "HaRaKa – حَ رَ كَ" Dance Development and Research, and initiated by l'Officina, Marseilles, and developed in partnership with "L’animal a l'esquina – Barcelona", "Indisciplinarte – Terni" and "El Teatro – Tunis", questioning the form of “miniature” in contemporary practices, with an inclination towards the figure of the other in love contexts, alterity and affectation. The project receives the support of the EU Program "Culture", and "Marseilles-Provence 2013".

عرض أدائي حي للفنانة الإسبانية "ليو كاسترو"
"كيف يفهم الانسان قيمة بشرية مثل "الحب" عندما ينتقل إلى مكان و ثقافة جديدة لم يحتك بهامن قبل؟"
من خلال هذا السؤال، و باستخدام الجسم البشري كمادة فنية و كاميرا الفيديو كأداة، تبدأ الفنانة الاسبانية "ليو كاسترو" رحلة استكشافية في المدينة "القاهرة" لتسجيل هذه القيمة من خلال المباني و الأشخاص و المواقف التي تقابلها في المدينة لأول مرة ..

في هذا العرض يتم التركيز على أعمال الفنانة "ليو كاسترو" و ذلك من خلال مشروع " مُ نَ مْ نَ مَ ات" ، حيث يأتي العرض في ختام فترة عمل مكثف في القاهرة يستضيفها مشروع "حَ رَ كَ" و ذلك في إطار فترة إقامة فنية في مصر.
مشروع "مُ نَ مْ نَ مَ ات" يتم تنظيمه في مصر بالشراكة مع أربع مؤسسات من كل من فرنسا و إيطاليا و إسبانيا و تونس، و يبحث في كيفية ابتكار عروض فنية معاصرة تحذو خُطى المنمنمات العربية و الفارسية من حيث تركيز المادة الفنية في مساحات صغيرة ، سواء مساحات زمنية أو مكانية أو أدائية .. إلخ، وذلك بالتركيز على "الآخر" و"الحب" كموضوع رئيسي.

Workshop “Introduction to Contemporary Dance”
This workshop addresses beginners who wish to be informed or initiated into Contemporary dance. The workshop begins by a series of intense exercises and body work and then goes into material that uses body weight, awareness of weight shifting and the center, isolation and stretching. It also focuses on learning sequences of dance that produce different learning experiences in the workshop attendees. Improvisation will be used to question on the relation between the body and the space around/ the others around it.
The workshop is open to beginners and to amateurs.

Workshop is Five days intensive.

Dalia Naous:
Dalia Began classical ballet at an early age and took multiple training workshops in contemporary dance in both Beirut and Paris. She worked with choreographers and instructors such as El Teatri Del Vento (IT), Sara Gibran (DEN), Anne Colloc and Fabienne Compet (FR).
She holds a Diploma of Higher Studies in the Theater Faculty of Fine Arts in Beirut, a BA in Performing Arts with emphasis on Contemporary Dance at the University of Saint Denis Paris VIII (2006), and a Master degree in the same filed (2009-2010).

From 2001 till 2006, she taught ballet to children at the Russian Cultural Center in Beirut and in parallel participated as a performer in dance and theater performances with several choreographers and directors including among others Teatri Del Vento, Nabil Al Ozon, Roueida Al Ghali Horning and Siham Nasser.
From 2004 till 2006, she was part of the Collective Studio 11 (Lebanese Physical Theater Collective) whom In-Situ performances were played in Middle East and Europe.
In 2007 she co-founded with Nancy Naous the company 4120.corps in which she is a performer.

Since 2009, Dalia Naous is living in Cairo where she delivered in February 2009, a contemporary dance workshop in Alexandria during the Creative Forum for Independent Theater Groups (Europe- Mediterranean). Dalia is currently in preparation for her first year of PHD research around “The body of the post-war years in dance, theater and Lebanese cinema” at the University of Saint Denis Paris VIII.

مقدمة عن الرقص المعاصر للمبتدئين

هذه الورشة مخصصة للبالغين الراغبين في تعلم الرقص المعاصر. ورشة العمل ستبدأ ببعض التمارين الإحمائية على الأرض لإعداد الجسد للحركة، ثم يليها تقديم عن تمارين التنفس، دعم الجسد، تطوير الوعي بوزن و وجود الجسد على الأرض و الوعي بمركز ثقل الجسد، تمارين "العزل" و في النهاية نقوم بتمارين الارتخاء لإراحة العضلات.
سيلي تمارين الإحماء مجموعة من تمارين الارتجال الحركي ، حيث يقوم المتدربون بارتجال حركات راقصة تحت إشراف المدربين، و حث المتدربين على تطوير وعي كامل بأجسادهم في الفراغ و أيضا بأجساد الآخرين الذين يشاركونهم نفس المساحة من الفراغ. كما سنحاول تقديم مبدأ استخدام الاتصال الجسدي كوسيلة للتعبير و التواصل، كلغة منفردة تحت التطوير.

داليا ناعوس – سيرة ذاتية

بدأت داليا ناعوس دراسة الباليه الكلاسيكي في سن صغير، و تنضمت للعديد من ورش العمل في كل من بيؤوت و باريس. اشتغلت مع كثير من مصممي الكوريوجرافيا و المدربين مثل "إليتياتري ديل فينتو – إيطاليا" ، "سارا جبران – الدانمرك" "آن كولو و فابيان كومبيت" من فرنسا.

تحمل داليا ناعوس دبلوما الدراسات العليا من كلية المسرح للفنون الجميلة في بيروت، و درجة الباكالوريا في فنون الأداء مع التركيز على الرقص المعاصر من جامعة سانت دينيس باريس في 2006، و أيضا درجة الماجستير في نفس المجال في العام 2009-2010

في الفترة من 2001 إلى 2006 قامت بتدريس الباليه للأطفال في المركز الثقافي الروسي في بيروت ، و بالتوازي مع هذا قامت بالمشاركة كمؤدية في العديد من عروض الرقص و المسرح مع العديد من المخرجين و مصممي الرقص مثل "تياتري ديل فيتو"، نبيل الأذن ، رويدا الغالي و سهام ناصر.

في الفترة من 2004 إلى 2006 كانت جزء من فريق ستوديو 11 (فريق لبناني للمسرح) و الذي تم عرض عروضه في الشرق الأوسط و أوروبا.

قامت في العام 2007 بتأسيس فرقة 4120.كوربس بالتعاون مع نانسي ناعوس.

تعيش داليا منذ العام 2009 في القاهرة ، و قامت بإعطاء ورشة عمل في الاسكندرية عن الرقص المعاصر خلال المؤتمرالإبداعي لفرق المسرح المستقلة (بين أوروبا و البحر المتوسط). تتحضر داليا حاليا للسنة الأولى من رسالة الدكتوراه عن "الجسد في مرحلة ما بعد الحرب في الرقص و المسرح و السينما اللبنانية" و ذلك في جامعة سانت دينيس باريس 8

This program of dance videos and films aim to showcase different aesthetics and references in the Spanish dance scene. Spread around between Madrid, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Berlin, the artists that created these films and videos stand on different points on what dance could be, and what the intersections of movement and image could be. In Diego’s “Geistern”, we are confronted by a daily and habitual landscape, while in “Chromatic Mirage”, Pere presents us a witty contemporary dance musical, and Roser dances to Abel’s camera in “Fil”, bringing a very intense physicality to the screen.

This talk discusses the interaction between dance and social dynamics. From a sociological perspective, the speaker demonstrates how dance is not just a repository of meaning, but a producer of meaning each time it is performed and re-performed. Reda Troupe performances and legacy are explored for embodiment of values of work ethics, demonstration effect, gender issues, social stagnation, as well as social inclusion.

"What is the essence of the dance?" This is the constant question that artist Ahmed El Sayed "Roby" repeatedly asks himself and his collaborators. How could the camera or the image transform dance into other multilayers or objects?

Ahmed El Sayed Ahmed, is also known as Rouby. A very experimental Egyptian artist, Rouby started his presence in Egyptian arts circles through his work with “Performance art” and “Visual Theatre’. Co-founder of “Sabeel for Performance Art”, an ambitious project that started with the desire to support and launch a platform for this very transient and ambiguous art form in Egypt, and ended up becoming reduced to one member in Egypt and another in Switzerland; artist Omar Ghayatt, with whom Rouby collaborated for years on several projects that were widely presented in Egypt, the Arab speaking region and Europe.

At HaRaKa's latest screenings, Rouby presented his films “Shadow Shape”, “Euphoria” and "Resonance". The films take dance and the moving body as a main point of departure and inspiration. They engage with this notion in many ways, from abstraction, to creating new material, to new documentary attempts. The artist also works through different strategies each time he approaches the moving body in his work. In “Euphoria”, Rouby explores a fixed angle and re-texturization of a captured image of young Egyptian dancers in an improvisation workshop with the very exciting and mysterious Spanish choreographer Germana Civera. The film explores transient moments where bodies float, and a movement is frozen in time and is captured into an image. In Resonance and in Shadow Shape, two figures seem to interact together, at one time they are peers and at another time they are self-projected images.

Rouby views dance as a language. Movement and gestures start constructing sentences, sentences start creating a language. Roby always looks on dance from a music or verbal language analogy. What this particular language would be able to deal with for him is exciting as an observer.

In a discussion after the films were screened, Rouby stated that for him sound and images that are created in these videos and filmes are processed in a way that tries to create a state of mind and place the audience within such state. It creates its own line of thoughts and events or its own dramaturgy this way. In one of the videos, the intention was to work on colour, and just make dance totally abstract, it is only colour in one of these videos. In another film, the dance itself was extracted outside space and outside its spatial moment of happening, it was cut out as an image and placed against a monocoloured background in the final image produced.
Ahmed “Roby” uses Space and colour reduction as an attempt to reveal what might be the essence of a dance itself, through such minimal approaches.

"ما هو الجوهر الكامن في فن الرقص؟ ما هو سر جمال هذا الفن؟"، هذا هو السؤال الذي يلح باستمرار على الفنان أحمد السيد "روبي" ، متسائلا كيف يمكن استخدام الكاميرا أو الصورة لاستكشاف ثنايا هذا الفن و خباياه من خلال التركيز على التقاط جوانبه المتعددة التي لا يتم التركيز عليها عادة عند تصوير الرقص ..
الفنان أحمد السيد –المعروف باسم روبي- هو فنان مصري معاصر مولع بالتجريب ، بدأت علاقته بالمشهد الفنّي المصري من خلال أعماله في فن الأداء و المسرح البصري. أحمد السيد هو من مؤسسي المشروع الطموح "السبيل - لفن الأداء " ، الذي بدأ بهدف دعم هذا الفن و انشاء منصة لانطلاق العديد من المشروعات المتعلقة بهذا النوع الغير معتاد من الفنون في مصر. لكن المشروع انتهى إلى أن صارت عضويته مقصورة على شخصين فقط، منهم واحد فقط في مصر ،و آخر في سويسرا هو عمر غيات، الذي تعاون معه روبي في العديد من المشروعات و الأعمال التي عُرِضَت على نطاق واسع في مصر و المنطقة العربية و أوروبا.

قام الفنان روبي –في آخر عروض الأفلام المقدمة من حَ رَ كَ- بعرض ثلاثة من أفلامه: "الظل" و "يوفوريا- نشوة" و "ريزونينس-رنين". كل من هذه الأفلام يركز على الرقص و الحركة كنقطة انطلاق و مصدر للالهام،و ذلك في ممارسات فنية بعضها تجريدي، و البعض الآخر يهدف الى استنباط أشكال جديدة من تدوين الفن و انتاج صور جديدة منه، حيث يقوم روبي بالعمل من خلال استراتيجيات و طرق مختلفة في كل مرة يتخذ فيها الجسم المتحرك كنواة لعمله. في فيلم "يوفوريا – نشوة" يقوم روبي بتغيير خامة تصويرية التقطها بكاميرا مثبتة لمجموعة من الراقصين المصريين أثناء ورشة ارتجال حركي مع الفنانة و مصممة الرقصات الاسبانية "جيرمانا سيفيرا"، و يقوم روبي من خلال الفيلم باستكشاف مناطق مختفية في ثنيات الرقصة مدة كل منها أجزاء من الثواني ،نكاد لا نلحظها و ذلك مثل ما يحدث عندما تطفو الأجساد في الهواء،و عندما يقوم بابطاء الصورة حتى تصل الى درجة الثبات و كأنها صورة فوتوغرافية للامسك بتعبير على وجه أحد الراقصين ظهر لجزء من الثانية. في الفيلمين الآخرين "الظل" و "ريزونينس – رنين" تبدو الصورتان اللتان تم تصويرهما كل على انفراد، تبدوان و كأنهما تتفاعلان مع بعضهما البعض لانتاج قصة أو حكاية يمكن فهمها من سياق حركة الجسمين. فبينما يحاول في فيلم "الظل" اان يروي قصة من نوع ما، نجد أنه في فيلم "ريزونينس" يقوم تدريجيا بالقائنا في عالم من الألوان بحيث تتحول الأجساد الى ألوان و لا نعود نلاحظ في النهاية الا ألوان تتداخل مع بعضها البعض في استعراض لوني قد يثير البهجة و قد يستحث غريزة الخوف !!

الرقص عند روبي يشكل لغة ، "كل شئ في الكون يرقص، الدخان، السيارات، حتى حركة الطيور في السماء بها شكل من أشكال الرقص"، الحركات و السكنات تشكل جمل،و الجمل تتراكب لتشكل لغة .. يرى الرقص كأنه لغة و ليس لغوا، و تثير حماسته دائما –عندما يجلس على مقاعد المشاهدين- ما يمكن ان تشكله هذه اللغة من حوارات و معاني.
في المناقشة التي تلت عرض هذه الأفلام مؤخرا ضمن برنامج حَ رَ كَ، وضّح أحمد السيد أنه عندما عمل على هذه الأفلام عكف على اختيار دقيق للصور و الأصوات المصاحبة لها بحيث تستحث حالة معينة أراد أن يحسّها المشاهد و أن يستقبلها بهذا الشكل دون سواه، و بالتالي يصبح لكل من هذه الأفلام شخصيته المميزة فارضا على المشاهد رؤية معينة من خلال بناء متماسك للعمل الفني. فأحد هذه الأفلام يركز على على الألوان كمادة بصرية مستخدما الأجساد كحامل متحرك لهذه الألوان، و في الآخر يستخدم تقنية اللونين الأبيض و الأسود مركزا على الحركة التي ينتجها الراقصون متجاهلا أي تفاصيل أخرى قد تكون موجودة. روبي كفنان يلخص المستقبلات الحسية من صوت و لون و حركة لاستخلاص الجوهر الكامن في الرقص ، كعطّار عربي بارع بين أعشابه و نباتاته ..

يسعدنا في حَ رَ كَ أن نقوم بتقديم مشروعنا الجديد "تحت الحصار"
مشروع "تحت الحصار" يأتي كمحاولة لمكاشفة الحدود السياسية و المشكلات التي نواجهها كمواطنين في التحرك عبرها ، و من خلاله نحاول اكتشاف كيف تم استخدام الأجساد كأدوات سياسية و إلى أي مدى تمادَينا في هذه الممارسات في المنطقة العربية.
هذه الدعوة موجهة إلى الفنانين العاملين في مجالات الرقص و الأداءالحركي لتقديم فكرة مشروع عن عرض يودّون ابتكاره مع فنان آخر في بلد عربي آخر. الفنانين سيكون بإمكانهم استخدام المدونة الخاصة بالمشروع (بلوغ) و كذلك القناة الخاصة به على موقع يوتيوب من أجل التواصل معا، و لآداء تجارب الأداء و انتاج الأعمال.
سيتم اختيار عدد من العروض المقدمة الينا و سيتم تقديمها على قناتي المشروع (المدونة و اليوتيوب). سيتم اعطاء الأولوية في عملية الاختيار للمشروعات التي تراعي مناقشة واحدة أو أكثر من المفردات التالية في المشروع: (حرية الحركة – التجمُّع – الحدود – القهر – تأشيرات المرور – تسييس الأجساد\الجسد المسيّس – الدخول ممنوع).

:سيتم اختيار الفنانين على حسب المعايير التالية
-يجب أن يكون الفنان من قاطني أحد دول المنطقة العربية و يعمل بأحدها أيضا.
-ينبغي أن يكون الفنان من حاملي جواز سفر أحد الدول العربية أو أحد دول منطقة الشرق الأوسط فقط بدون أي جنسية أخرى.
-سيتم الترحيب بالفنانين الذين يفضلون العمل تحت أسماء مستعارة، و كذلك سيتم الترحيب بالأشخاص الممنوعين من الحركة و السفر لأي أسباب

مدة المشروع ستة أشهر. خلال هذه المدة ، سيتدرب الفنانون على مشروعاتهم باستخدام الانترنت من خلال النصوص، و الفيديو و الصور و ملفات الصوت. سيتم تمثيل الآثار المتبقية من الأفكار الأساسية للمشروعات في مساحة افتراضية على الانترنت طارحين التساؤل عن كيف تتماكر و تتفاعل المساحات الافتراضية مع الحدود السياسية و مع تحجيم حرية الحركة.

CALL FOR ARTISTS

HaRaKa gladly announces its new project “IMMOBILE”.
”IMMOBILE” comes as an attempt to confront political borders, problematic mobility while looking at how politicized bodies are in the Middle East/ Arab Speaking World. Artists working with dance and live performance are invited to submit a proposal on a performance that they want to create with another artist at another Middle Eastern/ Arab Speaking Country. The artists could solely use the “IMMOBILE” Blog and the “IMMOBILE” YouTube channel to communicate, rehearse and produce their works. Selected performances will be presented on the Blog and the YouTube channel of the project. Our priority in the selection will be given to projects that engage with one or more of the following keywords: Mobility, Meeting, Borders, Oppression, Visa, Political Body, Denied Access

Criteria to Apply
- Artists must be living and working in the Middle East/ Arab Speaking World .
- Artists must hold a Middle Eastern/ Arab Passport ONLY and no other nationalities .
- Pseudonymous Artists, and other politically immobile subjects are encouraged to apply.

The project Duration is 6 months, during this period the artists will be rehearsing together online, via text, video, image and sound. The resulting “traces” of the original performative ideas, will take place within cyber space, questioning about how cyberspace negotiates political borders and oppressed mobility.

“Euphoria” - Films by Ahmed El Sayed (AKA: Roby)- Followed by discussion with the Artist.

HaRaKa invites Roby for this month’s screening, featuring a few of his dance films. He is known to be one of the few artists experimenting with movement and choreography frequently in his videos and films in Egypt, having collaborated with several choreographers himself (Laurence Rondoni, Adham Hafez, Germana Civera…etc) while producing his movement/image work. In the film Euphoria, Roby explores the transient shared moments in dance, the “floating” images and body parts, notions of freezing time and capturing what might be the essence of a choreography, the Euphoria of Dance.

"يوفوريا - نشوة"

يدعو برنامج "حَ رَكَ" الفنان أحمد السيد "روبي" هذا الشهر لعرض عددا من أفلام الرقص التى قام بخلقها، تصويرا و أداءً. أحمد السيد معروف انه من القِلة من الفنانين الذين يمارسون تجربة تصميم الحركة و أدائها في أشرطة الفيديو والأفلام له في مصر و المنطقة العربية ، متعاونا في انتاج الصورة و الحركة مع عدد من مصممي الرقص مثل: (لورانس روندونى ، أدهم حافظ ، خيرمانا سيفيرا... الخ). في فيلم "يوفوريا" ، يقوم روبي باستكشاف اللحظات الضئيلة المخفية في ثنايا الرقصات: اللحظات التي تبدو فيها الصور و الأجسام عائمة في الفراغ، و يقدم أيضا مفهوم تجميد الزمن و التقاط ما قد يكون مختفيا مما قد يعطي الرقصة عبيرها و شخصيتها المتفردة .. انه يقدم يوفوريا (=نشوة) الرقص.

Ahmed El Sayed (AKA: Roby) is a multidisciplinary artist, working in the fields of Performance, Installation, Interventions and Film. His work has been presented widely in Egypt, the Arab Speaking World and in Europe. He established several platforms for Performance; “Street Performance Platform in Geneva”, “Sabeel Platform” in Cairo, and several intervention series, including “Exotic Cameraman” which was presented in Egypt, India, Spain, Germany. Ahmed Roby studied Theatre at the Faculty of Arts- Helwan University, in Egypt, and specialized in Drama and Criticism. Currently, he is developing “performative machines” for multimedia performances

Invites artists from various disciplines to submit a single proposal for its joint project Miniatures Officinae.

Miniatures is a joint project between 5 Mediterranean partners, and is funded by the European Union's Grant
The project brings forth the concept of Miniature as a historical form popular in the region (Persian Manuscripts, Ottoman Manuscripts, Book of Hours,…etc) and raises the question of the possibility of how can a miniature be created in a contemporary setting.

The guiding theme for the project is relatedness to the other in a specifically emotive relationality: how do we relate to the other? What defines such relation? What constitutes desire? How can "love" be a central strategy for such configuration?
Are among the many questions the project seeks to raise.

The project is open to submissions from artists or artistic groups from across the disciplines (dance, performing arts, visual arts,….etc)

Selected projects will be co-produced by HaRaKa in Egypt and in another partner organisation with the network of this project. The project will be premiered at the Miniatures Presentations in April 2011, within the framework of an international event bringing together aritsts, theorists and researchers from different countries to meet and present their work in Egypt

Deadline for submission of tentative proposals is 25th of May 2010

A meeting with the shortlisted applicants to discuss their initial idea will be taking place the week after that, and the selection of the final projects will be annouced later in June 2010

يتقدم مشروع "حَ رَ كَ - للبحث و التنمية لفن الرقص" بالتعاون مع مؤسسات: "أوفيتشينا – مارسيليا " و "التياترو – تونس" و "لانيمال الا سكينا – برشلونة " و "انديشيبلينارتِه – تيرني " بدعوة الفنانين من مصر من مختلف المجالات الفنية للمشاركة و التقديم –بعرض واحد فقط- في المشروع المشترك "منمنمات أوفيتشينا

مشروع المنمنمات هو مشروع مشترك بين 5 مؤسسات من دول المنطقة المتوسطية و يتم تمويله بمنحه مقدمة من الاتحاد الأوروبي و من المؤسسات الشريكة الخمس।

يستدعي المشروع فكرة المنمنمات ، باعتبارها شكل فني تاريخي شاع بين دول المنطقة (كما نراه في المخطوطات الفارسية و العثمانية ، و كذلك في كتاب الساعات) و يدفع بسؤال عن كيفية تقديم فن المنمنمات بشكل فني معاصر و بالخصوص فى الاداء الحركى।

الموضوع الرئيسي لهذا المشروع يتشكل حول العلاقة مع الآخر ، و يتم تقديمه في إطار حسِّي عاطفي، مثل: كيف تتشكل علاقتنا مع الآخر؟ و ما الذي يحدد مثل هذه العلاقة؟ ما الذي يشكل الرغبة؟ كيف يكون "الحب" هو المنطلق الأساسي لمثل هذه العلاقات؟ ॥ هذه الأسئلة هي بعض من العديد من الأسئلة التي يسعى المشروع إلى طرحها

يرحب هذا المشروع بالعروض المقدمة من الفنانين – أو المجموعات الفنية – من مختلف المجالات الفنية (رقص، أداء ، فنون بصرية ॥ الخ)

سوف يتم انتاج المشروعات المختارة بانتاج مشترك بين "حَ رَ كَ" و واحدة من المنظمات الأربعة الأخرى المشاركة في هذا المشروع، و سيتم تقديم المشروعات المختارة في القاهرة فى الفترة ما بين أكتوبر و ديسمبر 2010
،ثم فى ابريل 2011 في فعالية فنية ستشمل جميع العروض المقدمة من كافة المؤسسات المشاركة في المشروع في اطار دولي يجمع الفنانين، و الباحثين و النقاد من مختلف الدول لعرض أعمالهم في القاهرة।

آخر ميعاد لتقديم طلب مبدئي عن التصور المقترح للمشروع هو يوم 25 مايو 2010

.يفضل إرسال قائمة بجميع الأعمال التي قام بها الفنان سابقا أو سيرة ذاتية مفصّلة للفنان-
.نماذج من أعمال سابقة للفنان ، على اسطوانات مدمجة أو دي-في-دي أو رابط على الانترنت-
.نموذج طلب التقديم مكتمل البيانات-
عرض المشروع ، و يكون على صفحتين من النوع (أ4) و يوضح فكرة المشروع ، و طريقة العمل، و أسباب اختيار هذا الموضوع ، و خطة و جدول زمني لتنفيذ المشروع

سيتم عقد اجتماع مع القائمة المبدئية للفنانين المختارين لمناقشة الفكرة المقترحة بعد أسبوع من الميعاد النهائي للتقديم، و سيتم إعلان القرار النهائي في بدايات شهر يونيو 2010

In this lecture, Claudine Claudine Dussollier will discuss how performed/ choreographed movement is placed within landscapes, museums, cities .. etc, and how dance practice can twist and reform itself to fit the new mold, the outdoors. She will also present pictures from the DVD "Exterieur Danse".

برنامج مارس 2010

في الثامن من مارس تقدم "ح ر ك" محاضرة تلقيها "كلودين دوسولييه"و هي المسؤولة عن برامج التنمية والتعاون في منطقة البحر الأبيض المتوسط مع مؤسسة زنك / اى سى ام (لا فريش بيل دي ماي- مرسيليا)، تتحدث عن ممارسة جديدة للرقص تعتمد على الخروج من المسرح كسياق معتاد إلى الشارع حيث تختلف طريقة العرض تماما. تعتبر هذه المحاضرة تمهيدا لاستضافة "ح ر ك" أحد الفرق الفرنسية التي اختبرت هذا النوع من الرقص من قبل في خلال برنامجنا في الشهر القادم.
