BRIDGERS TO PARTICIPATE IN NCAA CAREER IN SPORTS FORUM

ECSU Lady Viking One of Three Hundred Student-Athletes Chosen

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- Elizabeth City State University’s Ya’Shonti Bridgers has been selected to participate in the 2013 NCAA Career in Sports Forum (CSF) June 8-11, as released by the NCAA Office last week.

From the over 700 applications from all NCAA Division I, II and III institutions, Bridgers is one of 300 student-athletes selected for the four-day event. She is the fifth ECSU student-athlete (Christen Pelton, Heather Smith, Teddy Warren, C.J. Wright) to be chosen as a participant for the Career in Sports Forum.

A native of Windsor, NC, Bridgers, just completed her junior season as a member of the ECSU Lady Viking basketball team. She averaged around 10 minutes per contest for the Lady Vikings who captured the CIAA Northern Division crown this past season. An accounting major at ECSU, she was recently recognized at the Athletic Award Ceremony as a member of the academic honor roll posting a GPA of 3.166.

Hosted annually by the NCAA, the CSF brings together several hundred selected student-athletes to learn about careers in sports. The CSF works to dispel myths about careers in athletics, as well as, facilitate the opportunity to obtain industry trends and hot topics from current athletics professionals.

The CSF's objectives for the student-athletes in attendance include: 1. how their personal values intersect with career opportunities; 2. understand how behavioral styles impact individual effectiveness; 3. develop actionable plans for personal growth and development; 4. learn a realistic view of the roles of coach or administrator in collegiate athletics or conference offices, as well as, within sports law and the sports entertainment industry; 5. examine the viability of selecting coaching, athletics administration, sports law, sports media and entertainment, and/or officiating as a full-time or part-time career; and 6. network with key decision makers from member institutions, sports law, sports media and entertainment, and the NCAA.

“Filming in North Carolina: An Alternative to Hollywood”

Museum of the Albemarle will host Dale Pollock, Professor of Cinema Studies and Producing at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 1 p.m. in the Gaither Auditorium. Mr. Pollock will present “Filming in North Carolina: An Alternative to Hollywood”. His topic will focus around movies such as The Guardian, Nights in Rodanthe, Brainstorm, Lucky Life, Mississippi Damned, and Rescue Men: The Story of the Pea Island Lifesavers that were filmed in Northeastern North Carolina and why North Carolina has become a place of interest to producers.

Mr. Pollock is currently a Professor of Cinema Studies and Producing at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem. He previously served as Dean of the School of Filmmaking for eight years. Mr. Pollock has produced 13 feature films, including A Midnight Clear, Set It Off, Mrs. Winterbourn, and Blaze. Films he has produced were nominated for four Academy Awards, and starred actors such as Paul Newman, Shirley MacLaine, Denzel Washington, Queen Latifah, Tommy Lee Jones, and Kathleen Turner. Mr. Pollock authored Skywalking: The Life and Films of George Lucas, currently in its third edition and fourth printing. In 2002, Mr. Pollock started and ran the RiverRun International Film Festival in Winston-Salem, NC.

The exhibit will showcase authentic memorabilia – costumes, screen tests, scene props, a script, Vivien Leigh’s Academy Award, and many other items from the James Tumblin Collection. ECSU ATHLETICS CONCLUDES SEASON WITH AWARDS CEREMONY

Eure Named Top Female Athlete; Davis, Sharpless Share Co-Male Athlete of the Year Honors

ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Elizabeth City State University Athletic Department officially brought the sports season to a close with a Awards Ceremony held April 27 at the Fine Arts Auditorium.

For the first time the department under the leadership of Interim Athletic Director Dr. Angelia Nelson, changed the format of the post season awards program. In favor of the traditional sit down dinner, the Athletic Department and supporters were treated to an “ESPY” style awards ceremony, including a video montage and picture projections of the night’s honorees.

Stan Lewter of Urban Sports & Entertainment was the Master of Ceremony for the evening’s festivities.

The top student-athlete honors of the evening went to Paneisha Eure (bowling) as the 2013 Female Athlete of the year while Brad Davis (football) and Angelo Sharpless (men’s basketball) headlined as Co-Male Athletes of the Year.

As MVP of the Lady Viking bowling team, Paneisha Eure led ECSU to a tie in the CIAA Northern Division and a semi-final berth at the 2013 Bowling Championship. Next fall she will enter her junior season on the lane as a two-time All-CIAA honoree. Throughout her teams’ season, she was one of the top performers, twice being named MVP at individual conference meets by other CIAA coaches. The Portsmouth, VA native was very active in the Student-Athlete Advisory committee and also was a member of the Academic Honor roll boasting a 3.213 GPA.

Brad Davis and Angelo Sharpless were both MVPs of their respective sports. Davis was the Defensive MVP and the first Viking to ever be named a First Team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association. He was a two-time All-CIAA performer and ECSU’s MVP of the 2012 CIAA Football Championship. Sharpless just wrapped a solid career for the Viking basketball team as the CIAA Men’s Player of the Year and Box To Row Player of the Year. In under three full seasons he scored 1,000 career points, reached the Final Four of the State Farm Slam Dunk Contest and was named an All-American for both Daktronics and the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

The Athletic Department also took time to honor former coach Alvin T. Kelley with the Lifetime Achievement Award; Coach Robert L. Vaughan with the ECSU Legacy Award; Bruce Biggs (Biggs Cadillac, Buick, GMC) and Chief Eddie M. Buffaloe (EC Police Department) both were recognized with Community Service Awards and the Distinguished Sports Alumnus Award went to Abdul Rasheed. The ECSU Pep Squad was also honored with a Spirit Award for their dedicated support of all the Athletic Teams.

Student-Athletes with a GPA of 3.0 or better were honored with Academic Recognitions while the Highest Overall GPA award went to Valerie Edwards (3.882; women’s tennis). The Women’s Basketball team took the team GPA award with an average of 3.145.

Other special awards went to Jairus Wilkins (Thurlis & Brenda Offensive Lineman Award), Jasmine Whitehurst (RL Vaughan Basketball Award-female & the Ralph and Joyce Cole Award), Angelo Sharpless (RL Vaughan Basketball Award-male) & Nigel Rios (Thomas Caldwell Award).

Sprouting Scientists and Hands-On Historians: A Summer Camp with Port Discover and the Museum of the Albemarle

Looking for something fun and educational for the little ones in your life? The Museum of the Albemarle and Port Discover will hold Hands-on Historians and Sprouting Scientists Summer Camp beginning Monday, June 17 through Friday, June 21, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. until Noon.

Campers 5 to 8 years old will begin their adventure at the Museum (Monday – Wednesday, June 17 - 19). Campers will experience three adventures in three days by discovering an Algonkian’s way of life, setting sail on a high sea adventure in search of pirates, and discovering camp life as experienced by a Civil War soldier. Campers then travel to Port Discover for the remainder of their adventure (Thursday- Friday, June 20 - 21). Let your little hero shine at Port Discover as they learn about ways they can make a difference around the world and in their own community. This camp will explore the science of germs, water quality, nutrition, recycling and energy. Campers will be a positive force both globally and locally by discovering ways to slow the spread of sickness and decrease their environmental footprint.

Campers 9 to 12 years old begin their adventure at Port Discover (Monday – Wednesday, June 17-19). Port Discover will transform campers into modern day super heroes as they learn about ways they can make a difference around the world and in their own community. This camp will explore the science of germs, water quality, food production, recycling, and wind energy. Campers will be a positive force both globally and locally by discovering ways to reduce hunger, slow the spread of sickness, and decrease their environmental footprint. Campers will end their week of adventure at Museum of the Albemarle (Thursday- Friday, June 20 - 21) where they will discover how World War II became everybody’s war in North Carolina.

May 2013: Gilchrist Announces He is Stepping Down as ECSU Chancellor

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE----– Elizabeth City State University Chancellor Willie J. Gilchrist, who has led his alma mater for nearly seven years, informed the campus community today that he is resigning his position and plans to formally retire from the University on June 30. Gilchrist said his decision is in the best interests of ECSU, the University of North Carolina system, and his family. UNC President Tom Ross will soon name an interim chancellor to lead the campus during the search for a permanent successor.

“It has been an absolute pleasure to lead this university, its faculty, staff and students on a path that continues to “Elevate Higher and Emerge Stronger,” Gilchrist said in announcing his decision to step down. “While I am grateful for the opportunity to have served over the last seven years, I am eagerly anticipating and look forward to spending more time with my family, along with the other opportunities that retirement will bring.”

ECSU’s many achievements during Gilchrist’s tenure include:

• Ranked among the Top Baccalaureate Colleges in the South by U.S. News & World Report in its “America’s Best Colleges” issue (2010);

• Launched successful academic program in aviation, acquiring 2 airplanes and a state-of-the-art traffic control system, flight radar system, and flight simulators for student instruction;

• Constructed state-of-the art Education Complex, Pharmacy Complex, and a new residence Hall;

• Achieved clean financial audits (2010-11 and 2011-12);

• Achieved full reaccreditation by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools with “no findings” (2010);

• ’School of Business and Economics, Department of Music, and Department of Engineering and Technology achieved national accreditation;

• Implemented Chancellor Young Voyagers program (2008);

• Nearly doubled grants and sponsored program funding, from $8 million to $15 million (2006-2012);

• Executed memorandum of understanding with University of Zululand;

• Executed 44 memoranda of understanding with North Carolina community colleges;

• Increased private giving and alumni participation; and

• Won CIAA championships in men’s basketball, bowling, and volleyball, and well as the 2012 Pioneer Bowl in football.

A 1973 graduate of ECSU, Gilchrist has devoted his 40-year career entirely to public education. He served as a classroom teacher, counselor, principal, and school superintendent before entering higher education administration. He was named interim chancellor of ECSU in September 2006 and has served as chancellor since March 2007. He also served on the UNC Board of Governors from 2001 – 2006 and has received numerous awards and recognitions for his contributions to education and his service to children.

Becton to Serve as Interim Chancellor of Elizabeth City State University

ELIZABETH CITY, NC -- UNC President Tom Ross announced today that former NC Court of Appeals Judge Charles L. Becton, who is completing a ten-month assignment as interim chancellor of North Carolina Central University, will become interim chancellor of Elizabeth City State University on July 1. Becton will succeed Willie Gilchrist, who last week announced that he will retire from the University on June 30 after nearly seven years in the post and four decades in public education.

In announcing Becton’s appointment, President Ross said: “Judge Charles Becton is known and respected throughout the state of North Carolina for his sound judgment and ability to get things done. As he has demonstrated yet again during his tenure as interim chancellor at NCCU, he tackles every challenge handed to him with full commitment, great passion, and absolute integrity. I can think of no one who is better qualified to lead ECSU during this time of transition, and I am grateful that he has accepted this new assignment.”

Born in Morehead City and raised in Ayden, Becton earned his undergraduate degree at Howard University and holds law degrees from Duke University (J.D.) and the University of Virginia School of Law (LL.M.). He began his legal career in 1969 with the New York-based NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and joined the Charlotte law firm of Chambers Stein Ferguson & Lanning the following year. He soon helped establish the firm’s Chapel Hill office, where he practiced until being appointed to the North Carolina Court of Appeals in 1981. Becton remained on the appellate bench until 1990, returning to private practice with the Raleigh law firm of Fuller, Becton, Slifkin & Bell.

Becton also has taught and lectured at trial advocacy skills institutes across the U.S. and beyond, and prior to becoming interim chancellor at NCCU, was the John Scott Cansler Lecturer at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law and a visiting professor of the practice at the Duke University School of Law. In 2010, he served as the Charles Hamilton Houston Chaired Professor of Law at the NCCU Law School.

Becton has served as president of the NC Association of Black Lawyers, the NC Academy of Trial Lawyers, and the NC Bar Association. His many awards and honors include NC Appellate Judge of the Year; the Justice William J. Brennan, Jr. Trial Advocacy Award; the Roscoe Pound Foundation’s Richard S. MS Office 2010 Introduction Class

CenturyLink Foundation to support efforts with up to $1 million match

WAKE FOREST, N.C. – CenturyLink, Inc. (NYSE: CTL) will hold its annual CenturyLink Feed the Children Backpack Buddies Food Drive June 3-7 in hundreds of company locations across the country. As part of this effort, CenturyLink is inviting local community members to join employees in supporting the Food Bank of the Albemarle.

Community members who want to help support the drive can bring non-perishable food items and monetary donations (please write check directly to “Food Bank of the Albemarle”) to the CenturyLink store at 104 S. Cobb Street; located on the corner of Cobb and Fearing Street. More information on Food Bank of the Albemarle’s needs and a list of acceptable donations can be found here: www.afoodbank.org.

The CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Foundation has pledged to match donations at $1 per pound of food up to 1 million pounds nationwide, providing the opportunity to increase individual donations with the support of this match.

ECSU holds Advanced Placement training session for area educators

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE--- Efforts are underway to increase the number of students in area schools who are taking Advanced Placement courses.

On June 17th and 18th Elizabeth City State University will host 60 education administrators and teachers from 15 counties for a two-day workshop, “Summer 2013, Building an AP Success Culture and Pipeline,” organized by the College Board. Advanced Placement staff will train local educators to prepare students for the rigorous challenge of college-level AP courses and exams. The AP Program will be introduced in these counties to help local students develop the skills they need for college and career success.

Participating teachers and administrators will come to ECSU from Edgecombe, Nash Counties, Northampton, Camden, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Beaufort, Northwest Halifax, Warren County, Hertford, Weldon City Schools, Bertie, Southeast Halifax, Martin, and Currituck counties. The workshop will be held in the Willie and Jacqueline Gilchrist Education and Psychology Complex. The purpose of the AP workshop is to create a pipeline of involved administrative leaders and teachers who know how Advanced Placement courses and exams can be used to build a college-going culture in their schools.

ECSU Chancellor Willie J. Gilchrist said his vision is to create a central location (ECSU) in northeastern North Carolina where College Board staff can gather annually to train local educators how to increase student access to AP courses and help their students to succeed on AP Exams.

Trevor Packer, senior vice president of the Advanced Placement Program at the College Board, said the nonprofit organization is very grateful to Elizabeth City State University for hosting this two-day AP training. “We hope to inform local high school educators about how AP’s college-level courses and exams can help students to develop the skills they need to earn a college degree and compete in today’s highly competitive global job market.”

According to the College Board, AP courses offer college admissions officers a consistent measure of course rigor across high schools, districts, and states— because all AP teachers, no matter where they are teaching, have to provide a curriculum that meets college standards. When college admissions officers see “AP” on students’ transcript, it demonstrates that the student has a track record of challenging themselves and performing well in college-level courses.

Research consistently shows that students who earn placement into advanced college courses through their AP Exam scores perform as well as — or better than — college students who first completed the introductory course at a college or university. Students who succeed on AP Exams during high school typically experience greater overall academic success in college, and are more likely to graduate from college and earn their degree sooner than their non-AP peers. Art Display at COA’s Elizabeth City Campus

Students of Margie Sawyer (Pictured) and Peggy West are currently displaying their art on the Elizabeth City campus of College of The Albemarle. Works of art may be seen in the entryway of the John Wood Foreman Technology Center and in the central hallway of the A Building. Current displays feature acrylic and mixed media, giving emphasis to the bright colors of spring and summer. The showing is scheduled to continue into July.

Both Sawyer and West teach classes through Workforce Development and Continuing Education at the college and have been sharing their knowledge of art for a number of years. “Originality, life experiences, and the imagination… that is where I encourage my students to draw ideas,” Margie Sawyer stated. “I always want them to be open to new techniques, put forth their best effort, and just enjoy what they are doing. It is such a pleasure to see students begin to blossom as they come to realize they are able to create art, just when they thought they weren’t capable,” she continued. “That is what keeps me going, seeing each one pleased with their work.”

Sawyer is scheduled to teach a day class during the month of July, “Summer Art”. She encourages everyone to come join in...teachers, business persons, senior citizens… anyone seeking to expand their knowledge and creativity in art.
