THE BLUE BOX
(Elizabeth City, NC) The Museum of the Albemarle's latest addition to its "Out of the Blue: Coast Guard Aviation" exhibit is what is known as the "Blue Box". The "Blue Box" is an early instrument flight trainer developed from Edwin A. Link's first system perfected in 1929. It is representative of a series of over 10,000 "Blue Boxes" that helped qualify more than half a million airmen during and after World War II, and has been used by more than 35 countries around the world.

Called the "C" series, it utilized a unique system of levers, valves, and vacuum bellows, simulating the moves of an actual airplane in flight. Inside, it features a full-scale instrument panel.

MOA's "Blue Box" was completely restored in 2007 by Bobby Pifer of Tampa Florida.

THE SECRET FLIGHTS OF THE WRIGHT BROTHERS
(Elizabeth City, NC) The Museum of the Albemarle's Historical Roundtable will present Dr. Larry E. Tise on Sunday, November 15, 2009 at 2:00 pm. As part of its ongoing free educational series, the roundtable will integrate the current Out of the Blue Coast Guard Aviation exhibit with Dr. Tise's new book, Conquering the Sky: The Secret Flights of the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk.

Serving as the Wilbur and Orville Wright Distinguished Professor of History at East Carolina University, Dr. Tise has completed new research on the lives of the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk. He includes fresh information about the Wrights as they travel to and from the site of the first heavier than air powered flight. Their visits and travel through Elizabeth City and other local areas are explored current interpretations of their history.

Conquering the Sky, released in September is the first exploration into the personalities, character and values of the Wright brothers as they weighed their almost unquenchable-sometimes incompatible-ambitions to achieve fame, wealth, power and a historical legacy.

Aviation aficionados will enjoy the story of how the brothers first attempted to broker, not only their flying machine, but their superior knowledge of how and why it worked, to the competing military powers of the early 20th century-Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States.

After the roundtable Dr. Tise will be available for questions and book signing.

Vikings Capture All Important Division Win on the Road

October 24, 2009 - The Elizabeth City State University Vikings picked up a 38-12 victory over Saint Paul’s College Saturday afternoon at Parkview High School.

The Vikings held Saint Paul's (3-5, CIAA 2-4) to 178 total yards, including 81 yards through the air. Offensively ECSU was perfect in the red zone going 4-4 on scoring opportunities. The Tigers were 2-3 in the red zone but only crossed mid-field into Viking territory a total of four times however two of those possessions ended with a punt and an interception.

ECSU led 3-0 until a 1-yard touchdown run by Cedric Blacknall put ECSU 10-0 at the 14:19 mark of the second quarter (8 plays, 65- yards). The Vikings struck again after Jeff Lynn blocked a punt back toward the goal line where Justin Hamilton scooped the ball 2-yards out before falling into the end zone for a 17-0 lead.

Tiger quarterback Alwan Lee would connect with Keith Duhart on a 9-yard touchdown strike with 2:22 left before the break (extra point failed). Creven Powell called his own number for a 1-yard TD just before the intermission and the Vikings took a 24-6 lead to the locker room.

With 9:04 left the in third quarter the Tigers pulled a little closer, converting the game’s only turnover till that point into a score and a 24-12 ECSU advantage. After a failed two-point conversion the Tigers sputtered offensively and only threatened to score once more but Lee was intercepted at the Viking 20-yard line by Kobi Williams killing the 7 play drive. On the other hand ECSU padded their lead with another 1-yard TD run by Blacknall and another blocked punt, this time courtesy of Hamilton but recovered in the end zone by Sequan Nevels for the game final point spread.

Defensively the Vikings were again led by Malcolm Jenkins who finished with a team high 8 tackles, one and a half sacks for a loss of 11 yards and 4 quarterback hurries. Terry Griffin contributed a solid performance with 2 sacks a forced fumble and 7 total tackles.

The Vikings (6-3, CIAA 4-2) will head to Richmond, VA to take on division leading Virginia Union University on Saturday, October 31st. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Hovey Field. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.

ECSU Albemarle Symphony Orchestra holds fall concert on November 15
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- The ECSU Albemarle Symphony Orchestra will hold its fall concert at 3:00 pm on November 15 at the K.E. White Graduate and Continuing Education Center. The concert is free.

Concert selections will include works by three well-known composers: Alfred Reed, one of America's most prolific and frequently performed composers, with more than two hundred published works for concert band, wind ensemble, orchestra, chorus, and chamber ensemble; Camille Saint-Saens, a French composer and co-founder of the Société Nationale de Musique, who composed of over 300 musical works, including symphonic poems such as Danse Macabre and operas such as Samson et Dalila; and Gustav Holst, a British composer known for his choral part-songs, song cycles, operas and orchestral pieces, such as "The Planets".

Lady Vikings Go Undefeated In the CIAA East for the Third Consecutive Season

ELIZABETH CITY, NC - In a match that took less than an hour, the Elizabeth City State University volleyball team polished off Virginia Union University in three sets 25-8, 25-4, 25-13 Tuesday night at the RL Vaughan Center.

With the win the Lady Vikings capture their third straight Division title while finishing with a perfect 8-0 record in the CIAA East over that same time span.

ECSU overpowered Virginia Union (7-19, CIAA 4-10) from the start, serving up 15 aces and almost tripling the Lady Panthers kill output 34-8. The 50 minute match was the sixth time this season that the Lady Vikings disposed of their opponent in under an hour. They have now wrapped up their CIAA schedule and will enter next weekend’s CIAA Tournament in Hampton, VA as the top seed in the Eastern Division.

Senior Jennifer Hendy finished with a game high 9 kills while Xie’Ara Maybank-Smallings contributed 7 kills versus zero hitting errors and 5 solo blocks.

The Lady Vikings will hold Senior Night on Thursday honoring Hendy, Eva Johnson and Ashley Tarasoff when they welcome Lincoln University of Pennsylvania to the RL Vaughan Center. Game time is slated for 6:00 pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.

ECSU VOLLEYBALL TO SALUTE THREE LADY VIKINGS ON SENIOR NIGHT
All-CIAA Trio the Most Winning Senior Class in School History

October 28, 2009

ELIZABETH CITY, NC - The Elizabeth City State University volleyball team will celebrate "Senior Night" Thursday evening at the RL Vaughan Center.

Prior to 6:00 pm game against Lincoln University (PA), ECSU will pause to celebrate three All-CIAA performers Jennifer Hendy, Ashley Tarasoff and Eva Johnson, who will be playing in their final game at the RL Vaughan Center.

Jennifer Hendy transferred to ECSU from Columbia College in 2008 and immediately made her presence felt as a right side hitter. She was named to the 2008 All-CIAA First Team, was an automatic selection for the 2009 Pre-Season All-CIAA Volleyball squad and helped steer the Lady Vikings to the 2008 CIAA Tournament crown.

Ashley Tarasoff began her career at ECSU in 2006 making an impact as that season's Rookie of the Year. Since then the setter, who hails from Castlegar, British Columbia, has become the Lady Vikings all-time leader in assists and service aces. For her career she has tallied 2,163 assists and 254 service aces, setting a personal best with 88 aces in 2008. Tarasoff was named First Team All-CIAA last season as well as the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Region Team.

Like Tarasoff, Eva Johnson came to ECSU as a freshman in 2006 and in subsequent years has become the best all-around volleyball player to wear a Lady Viking uniform. She was named to the 2006 All-Rookie Team and is a two-time All-CIAA First Team performer as an outside hitter. He current holds the school career records for kills (1,222), total attacks (3,238) and digs (1,292). In addition to being named to the AVCA All-Region team in 2008 she was named to the 2007 CIAA All-Tournament Team and was the 2008 Tournament MVP when the Lady Vikings captured the school's first ever CIAA Volleyball Championship.

The three seniors also led the Lady Vikings to the best record in school history in 2008 (31-10) as well as the school's first berth in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament. The Lady Vikings have won the CIAA Eastern Division three consecutive seasons.

The Lady Vikings pick up their 20th win of the season and await the start of the 2009 CIAA Volleyball Tournament next Friday in Hampton, VA.

Xie’Ara Maybank-Smallings led the way with a season high 14 kills and 2 solo blocks As a team ECSU powered past the Lady Lions (8-19) in kills 47-16. In her final game before the Vaughan Center fans Eva Johnson had 9 kills while fellow seniors Ashley Tarasoff and Jennifer Hendy contributed 23 assists and 7 kills, respectively.

The Lady Vikings, who went 6-4 in their season opener hosted by Winston-Salem State last weekend, will welcome six teams in a two match, one baker game competition. The teams include Hampton University, North Carolina Central, St. Francis, Winston-Salem State, Bowie State and Howard University.

Vikings Pitch Second Half Shut-Out; Force Three-Way Tie in CIAA Eastern Division

RICHMOND, VA - The Elizabeth City State University Vikings handed Virginia Union University a 21-13 loss Saturday afternoon at Hovey Field.

The victory coupled with Virginia State’s 14-12 win over Bowie State forces a three-way tie for the Eastern Division crown and a berth in the CIAA Championship game next Saturday in Durham, NC. The CIAA office will host the tiebreaker tomorrow afternoon in Hampton, Virginia at the conference headquarters. All three teams (ECSU, Virginia Union and Bowie State) have a 5-2 record in the CIAA and are 2-1 against common opponents Lincoln, Virginia State and St. Paul’s.

The coin toss will be web streamed live at www.livestream.com/CIAA.

Cedric Blacknall rushed for two of his three touchdowns in the second half; with 35 seconds remaining in the third quarter his 10-yard score gave the Vikings their first lead of the afternoon 14-13. Then with 10:19 left in the game he padded the lead with a 2 yard scamper capitalizing on the Panthers fifth turnover of the day. The Vikings defense picked off 5 interceptions and forced 3 fumbles, two of which they recovered. Three of the Panthers’ turnovers came in the 4th quarter alone.

ECSU’s ground game was paced by Daronte McNeill who rushed for 117 yards on 27 carries. Dewitt Dixon had a career day with 12 tackles while Jason Tate contributed 10 tackles (7 solo, 3 assisted) and a forced fumble. Junior Terry Griffin snagged his first career interception which he returned for 33 yards to go with a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, a quarterback hurry and 4 tackles, two of which were for a loss of 12 yards.

Vikings Finish 2009 Season at 7-3 Overall

HAMPTON, VA - Bowie State University won the three-way tiebreaker which took place at the CIAA Office on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm.

This officially ends the 2009 campaign Elizabeth City State at 7-3 overall and 5-2 in conference play.

The accounting firm of Cavanaugh and Nelson administered the coin toss tiebreaker, where the three contending Athletic Directors simultaneously flipped coins; Bowie State Interim AD, Arlene Creek, flipped a tail versus two heads tossed by Virginia Union and Elizabeth City State.

The Bulldogs (6-4, CIAA 5-2) are now crowned the Eastern Division Champions and move on to face Fayetteville State (7-3, CIAA 6-1) next Saturday at Durham County Stadium in Durham, NC.

Elizabeth City, NC — Children will learn all about pigments and color at Port Discover's Toddler Time, Pigmented Turkeys, set for Thursday, November 19. Each child will make their own colorful turkey creations to take home for Thanksgiving. Toddler Time is set for 10:00 am.

Toddler Time is a science program just for preschoolers, ages 3 – 5. Cost for the program is $5 per family and reservations are required. Parents or guardians must accompany the child.

ECSU Closes Out 2009 Season with Best Overall Record in CIAA East

HAMPTON, VA - Elizabeth City State head coach Waverly Tillar and four members of the Viking football team have garnered CIAA Honors for the final week of the season as released by the conference office Monday morning.

For Waverly Tillar it represents his second honor of the 2009 season. This past Saturday the Vikings played spoiler for Virginia Union by defeating the Panthers 21-13 in Richmond, VA. The win forced a three-way tie in the CIAA East which was later won by Bowie State via a tiebreaker on Sunday.

Dewitt Dixon and Terry Griffin have been named CIAA Linebacker and Defensive Lineman of the Week, respectively. Dixon, who hails from Charlotte, NC had a career high 12 tackles (8 solo, 4 assisted) as the Vikings' held the Panthers scoreless in the second half the game. Griffin also had career day as he snagged the first interception of his career, which he returned for 33 yards. He also had a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, 1 sack for a loss of 7 yards and a QB hurry to go along with 4 tackles (2 solo, 2 assisted); including two tackles for a loss of 12 yards. The Panthers crossed mid-field only one time in the second half.

Daronte McNeill and Daniel Mendez round out this week’s honorees. McNeill kept the Panther defense off balance with his third 100+ rushing game of the season. He finished with 117 yards on a career high 27 carries. His longest run was for 29 yards and he also caught a pass for 16 yards. Mendez was 3-for-3 in extra point attempts and booted a career long 67 yard punt in the first quarter versus Virginia Union.

ECSU Tournament Play Slated to Begin Friday at 11:00 am

HAMPTON, VA - Seven members of the Elizabeth City State University volleyball squad have been voted to the 2009 All-CIAA First and Second Team as released by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.

The team is led by three-time CIAA Player of the Year Chekimbrell Jefferson of Fayetteville State University. The Lady Broncos and Lady Vikings had the most All-CIAA representation with seven honorees each.

For Lady Vikings Eva Johnson, Xie’Ara Maybank-Smallings, Jennifer Hendy, Stacie West and Cassie Noe were all named All-CIAA First Team performers while Samarri Griffin and Ashley Tarasoff were tabbed for the All-CIAA second team. ECSU will begin compete in Pool A beginning on Friday at 11:00 am against Shaw University. At 1:00 pm they will take on Bowie State University then will wrap up the day against Fayetteville State at 7:00 pm.

Should they advance out of pool play in the double elimination tournament, ECSU will face off against either the winner or the runner up of Pool B at 5:00 pm or 7:00 pm in the semi finals on Saturday. The Championship game will be played on Sunday at 1:00 pm.

On October 14, 2009, the Congressional House acknowledged the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway Association with special recognition on their 10th anniversary (H. Res. 465). The Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center, (the first Welcome Center built off an Interstate Highway), sits on the banks of the alternate route of the ICW. The Canal is the oldest operating artificial waterway in the United States and has been placed on the National Register of Historical Places, was registered as an engineering landmark in 1988, and was included in the National Park Service's Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program in 2004. It was once a 22-mile-long waterway that supported commercial vessels traveling between Virginia and North Carolina. In 1929 it was purchased by the Federal Government for half a million dollars and incorporated into a larger transportation network. Today, the Dismal Swamp Canal is an integral part of the waterway. Director, Penny Leary-Smith states, "As an AIWA board member representing North Carolina, I am proud to recognize this anniversary resolution and the organization’s many accomplishments."

House Resolution 465 state that the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AIWW) was authorized by the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1937 to provide a safe inside navigation channel for commercial shipping, support and encouragement of interstate commerce, and safe harbor and protection for shipping from inclement weather and wartime enemy attack. The AIWW, completed in 1940, runs along the southeast coast of the U. S. from Norfolk, VA to Key West, Fla., and measures 1,088 miles long. According to the Corps of Engineers, in 2007 the AIWW supported the transportation of 2,543,000 tons of freight traffic, including commodities such as wheat, corn, soybeans, electrical machinery, iron, coal, gasoline, fabricated metal products, and electrical machinery. It also supported a total of 34,184 trips made by recreational, commercial, and military vessels.

The AIWW has enhanced the lives of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida residents as well as the greater southeastern United States for more that six decades. The wildlife, flora, and fauna along the AIWW provide ample recreational opportunities for birdwatchers, photographers, and boaters.

The AIWA was organized in 1999 to address the navigation challenges of the AIWW and to encourage the continuation and further development of waterborne commerce and recreation on the AIWW. It is an advocate for maintenance of the AIWW to promote safe, cost-effective navigation for commercial and recreational vessels. The Association promotes the AIWW as a vital marine highway along the Atlantic coast. The AIWA has worked over the last decade as an advocate for keeping the waterway open and safe for navigation, earning the title of "Voice of the Waterway."

The AIWW is also used extensively by recreational boaters. Studies have shown that recreational boaters bring millions of dollars to State budgets. The waterway is also used by vessels not equipped for ocean travel or when weather conditions make the ocean too rough to travel. Congressman Henry Brown, Jr. (SC), states, "Since it runs parallel to Interstate 95, the waterway has the potential to become a major marine highway, serving as a safe, fuel-efficient, and economical alternative to congested highways and rail lines."

As this waterway continually faces funding challenges, it is very rewarding to receive the accolades bestowed on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway Association for its hard work and achievements.

Lady Vikings Top CIAA Eastern Division for Third Consecutive Season

HAMPTON, VA - For the second consecutive season Elizabeth City State head volleyball coach Linda Bell has been named the CIAA Volleyball Coach of the Year.

Now in her sixth year at the helm of the Lady Viking volleyball program, Bell has led ECSU to its third consecutive CIAA Eastern Division Championship. The Lady Vikings are 20-14 overall and finished the regular season with a 13-1 mark in the CIAA.

ECSU will open up the 2009 CIAA Volleyball tournament tomorrow (November 6th) at 11:00 am against Shaw University. They will face Bowie State at 3:00 pm and Fayetteville State University at 7:00 pm. Brooks and McNeill Tabbed for 2009 All-Rookie Team

HAMPTON, VA- Josh Brooks and Daronte McNeill were named to the 2009 CIAA All-Rookie team as voted on by the CIAA Sports Information Directors.

Defensive Back Josh Brooks has been named the 2009 CIAA Defensive Rookie of the Year after turning in a solid first year as a regular in the Viking secondary. He tallied 25 solo and eight assisted tackles for 33 total tackles. The Washington, DC natives had three interceptions, one pass break up, four passes defended, and two forced fumbles in 10 games this season. Brooks had season highs against Virginia State University (8 tackles) and Chowan University (5 tackles, a forced fumble, and an interception).

McNeill was named to the to the All-Rookie offensive team after leading ECSU in rushing in 2009. His rushing average ranked 6th in the CIAA and he was second in the league in touchdowns (scoring) with nine in 8 games.
