1:Revamping spree: The year 2011 seems to be a big year for Google as the company has come up with two new projects - Google Plus and Online music store and has also given a facelift to its gamut of services. From YouTube to Gmail, all its key services have undergone a major facelift. Here are some key changes introduced by Google this year.

2:YouTube has reprogrammed its website to make it easier for viewers to find and watch their favourite channels. The facelift is the latest step in YouTube's attempt to make the Internet's most popular video site as easy to navigate. It has been reorganised to display three main vertical columns instead of scattering clips in horizontal rows.

3:Google's black bar has undergone a facelift and the company has come up with a new bar. Instead of the horizontal black bar at the top of the page, users can now find links to services in a new drop-down Google menu nested under the Google logo. The new grey bar has three main regions. On the left, the Google logo contains a drop-down menu with links to Google services that displays when a user hovers over or clicks on it. The central area contains a search box for the Google service the user is currently using. The right side features a share box and notifications to participate on Google+ from any Google page.

4:Gmail gets a new look. Google has also released the refereshed interface for its popular email service Gmail. Users can move to the new look by clicking on Switch to the new look in the bottom-right of Gmail. The new features on Gmail include redesigned email threads that now display profile pictures of contacts. Users can also choose the density of conversations displayed by choosing between three displays: Confortable, cozy and compact. Google had first announced its plans for a Gmail makeover in July this year.

5:Google's mapping technology has been upgraded by including indoor maping. Google's next frontier in digital mapping will span the world's shopping malls and airports. An upgrade of Google's mobile mapping service has been released that includes directions within stores, malls, airports and transit centers in the US and Japan.

6:Google has released its latest version of the Android operating system - Android 4.0, codenamed 'Ice Cream Sandwich'. Google has not only refined the already existing applications and functionalities, but has also introduced a number of new features

7:In a bid to counter Facebook's popularity, Google came up with a new social networking site Google Plus in late June. Earlier, Google Plus was open only to individuals, but it opend the service for businesses also in the month of November. Meanwhile, the company added a social layer to Gmail by adding integration with its new social service, Google plus.

8:Since the beginning, Chrome has been designed to allow apps to do more faster. But Google also made changes in Chrome to make it even easier to access favorite apps and discover new favorites. In the latest stable release of Chrome, the company completely redesigned the New Tab page. The company claims it to be more streamlined now and hence it becomes easier to access and organise apps in different sections on the page.

9:Google's blog-publishing service Blogger has also been given a new look. The company has rewritten the entire editing and management experience from scratch so that it becomes faster and more efficient for users to update and improve over time. Whether the user is on a dashboard or settings page of blogger.com, he can always create or edit posts with just one click at the top of the screen. The post editor has also been expanded and simplified to give users a larger canvas for drafting and previewing their work.

10:Opening a new front in its battle with Apple's iTunes, Google has come up with its much-anticipated digital music store in the US. Some songs are free, while others have been priced at 69 cents, 99 cents and $1.29 - the same prices as on Apple's iTunes. Artists whose work is available right away include Adele, Jay-Z and Pearl Jam. The store will feature dozens of free tracks from artists like Coldplay, Rolling Stones and Busta Rhymes.

Google is in the process of killing a number of its initiatives, which have failed to make the impact as the company had hoped. Google is calling it an out-of-season spring cleaning session. The services which the company has planned to shut down include Google Buzz, Google Wave, Google Knol, Google Friend Connect, Google Bookmarks Lists and Google Gears.

Odyssey,Tech fest of HBTI Kanpur

An idea originates and finds someone through whom it can manifest itself. That fortunate someone, experiences during the birth process, a feeling which is beyond description. Imagine for a moment that you are witnessing the creation of the universe. That’s Odyssey. Odyssey witnesses priceless, rich and heterogeneous cultural tapestry among the youth of this country. Odyssey affirms a pulsating and dynamic competitive platform for the budding technocrats of the nation. Odyssey incorporates the vitality to cajole them into being the custodian of what is actually their birth-right, which is talent, creativity and above all their identity. The seed were sown in 1985 and under the care and guidance of our respected and dedicated seniors it is in full stretch to fruitify. Following their path and layouts this time it’s our opportunity to hold this fest .Odyssey has drawn a footfall of about 10,000 youths from various schools and technical institutes, from all over the country previously and as it’s been 25 years we are in very much enthusiasm and full of zest to take the platform to the next level and floor almost double crowd this year.
Odyssey is the annual inter-collegiate cultural festival organised by the Council of Student Activities at Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI), Kanpur. It is one of the largest cultural festivals organised in northern India, attracting more than 1000 participants and 5000 visitors every time it is held.
It collaborates all the various club like the cultural sub council, literary club, hobby club, sports club, personality development club, photography club, yoga club and N.S.S. It is one of the oldest and biggest youth festivals in the country. It consists of varied competitions, professional shows and lifestyle events, as well as discussions on socially relevant issues of the day.
2009, Odyssey received participants close to a 1000 and more than 4500 visitors. With the kind of diverse event list offered, Odyssey encourages participations from both academically and culturaly inclined students. HBTI was one of the first colleges in India to start with a cultural cum literary festival on its campus.
Odyssey 2010 is expected to be the most successful and rocking festival in the history of H.B.T.I. with the rock band "JAL" to be the center of attraction at the rock night. Kanpur is all set to welcome JAL.

HARCOURT BUTLER TECHNOLOGICAL INSTITUTE, KANPUR

Harcourt Butler Technological Institute, Kanpur is an academic autonomous engineering college under the Uttar Pradesh Technical University. Its programs have been conferred autonomous status under the university.^[1] It is the second engineering institute in Uttar Pradesh after the former University of Roorkee. The institute holds ISO 9001:2000 Certification. It offers Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral degrees in engineering, as well as Masters degrees in Business administration and Computer Applications.
In 1959, when the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur was established, IIT classes were held in the canteen building of HBTI until IITK had its own campus.^[2]
HBTI is also the mother institute of the National Sugar Institute, the Government Central Textile
Institute and the Glass Institute.

History

The history of HBTI, Kanpur, dates back to 1907 when the Indian Industrial Commission at its Nainital meeting proposed two institutions for engineering — one at Roorkee and the other at Kanpur.
Thus the Government Research Institute, Cawnpore was started in 1920. It was housed in two rooms of what was called Sher Wali Kothi. The old majestic building is still intact at the north-west corner of the Company Bagh crossing, Nawabganj. Dr. Annett was then the principal of the Opium Research Laboratory of which the new institute was an adjunct.
On 25 November 1921, the Governor of the United Provinces, Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler (1869–1938), K.C.S.I., C.I.E., laid the foundation of the present building. It was rechristened Government Technological Institute in 1921.
In 1926, it got the name Harcourt Butler Technological Institute. Its first principal of Indian nationality was Dattatreya Yashwant Athawale (Rao Saheb Rai Bahadur).

National ranking

HBTI has been ranked 26th best engineering college in survey of outlook magazine'2011.
HBTI has been djudged the Best Government Engineering College in 'Star News National B-School Award 2011' in recognition of leadership, development, marketing an institute and industry interface.
HBTI was ranked as the 17th best technical institute of the country in 2009 for its contribution to research in the last decade (Current Science Journal Vol. 97, No. 3, 10 August 2009), above many institutes of national repute.
HBTI was ranked 1st among all (around 600) college affiliated to UPTU.
HBTI was ranked 25th among top 50 government engineering colleges in India and 25th overall by Outlook India in 2008.
HBTI was ranked by India Today magazine at 25th rank amongst 100 engineering colleges of India in 2007.
HBTI was ranked 21st among top 100 institutes in India by Dataquest in 2005.

Campus

The institute is spread across two campuses, the east campus (77 acres) and the west campus (271 acres) situated 3 km apart. Thus, the institute campus is a conglomerate of two campuses:

East campus (academic block)

The academic campus shares a border with the CSA university campus. It comprises :

The main building which is a stone structure inaugurated in 1921; it houses the main academic block and department of Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology, along with departments related to Science and Humanities.
Five department buildings of Computer Sciences and IT, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, Civil and Leather Technology.
Computer centre, Library Building, Auditorium, Workshop, Oil Technology Association of India (OTAI) head quarter, Council of leather exports central region office, Paint and Coatings Technology Association(PACT) head-quarters.
Three girls hostels, two boys hostels and one under-construction boys’ hostel.

West campus (residential block)

The West Campus features three boys’ hostels: WCH-1, WCH-2 and WCH-3, and faculty residential quarters.

Till 1970, HBTI conducted courses in Sugar Technology, Textiles and Glass Technology. Subsequently, three new institutes - the National Sugar Institute, the Government Central Textile Institute and the Glass Institute were created out of these departments.
In addition to bachelor level programs, Diploma Courses of DOEACC, MCA, M.Tech. (both part-time and regular), MBA (through STEP-HBTI) and Doctoral programs in all the discipline of Engineering, Technology and Basic Sciences courses are available. Besides playing an educational role, the Institute also runs research programs sponsored by government institutions and research organizations.

Research

The faculty has contributed with research papers in national and international journals and presentations in India as well as abroad. Sponsored R&D schemes with DST, UGC, ICAR, DRDO, UPCST, CSIR, DAE, ICMR, DOE and Ministry of Civil supplies have been completed. HBTI was declared as 17th best technical institute of the country in 2009 for its contribution to research in the last decade.

Science and Technology Entrepreneurs' Park

STEP is a project sponsored by HBTI, Kanpur along with the Department of Science and Technology, government of India, New Delhi. It is also financed by financial institutions like IDBI, IFCI and ICICI along with funding from the government of Uttar Pradesh, through its Department of Science and Technology, and Department of Industries.
It was established in 1986 at the institute, for motivating science, technology and engineering graduates to take up entrepreneurship. It has been engaged in the activities of technology development, technology incubation, technology transfer and technology applications in industry. STEP- HBTI has been working as an apex organization for transforming technical education into entrepreneurship.
The management programme leading to an MBA degree at STEP-HBTI is also offered as a course.
