Fallston, MD – The Humane Society of Harford County Inc. (HSHC) and Pets for Patriots, Inc. have joined forces to give military veterans, service members and their families the gift of a pet’s unconditional love, while providing dogs and cats a second chance at life. Through this partnership, Pets for Patriots will connect our area’s loyal service men and women to HSHC, and HSHC will introduce them to eligible homeless dogs and cats that are looking for permanent homes. Jarrettsville Elementary Receives Special Flag Presentation

Mrs. Brosnan and the second grade classes at Jarrettsville Elementary were involved in a project this year learning about the United States Air Force and sending care packages to airmen overseas. The airmen, including Mrs. Brosnan’s husband, John, were so appreciative of the support and items from the students that they flew a United States of America flag during a combat mission aboard an F-16C over Afghanistan in honor of Jarrettsville Elementary. DEA Recognizes Harford County for Participation in Nationwide Prescription Drug Take Back Days

(Bel Air, MD) - - Harford County Executive David R. Craig received an award from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)’s Carl Kotowski, Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Baltimore Office, for Harford County’s successful role in the Nationwide Prescription Drug Take Back days.

Over the past eighteen months Harford County has collected 3,750 pounds of unused or expired prescription medications for safe and proper disposal. “In the October 2011 Take Back initiative, Harford County ranked number one in total collection and participation,” Kotowski stated. Read more...

On Wednesday, January 25th, No Kill Harford is taking the first step towards a No Kill Harford County by holding our first public meeting. We are asking the community to “Stand Up For Harford Pets” by joining us and learning about No Kill and the steps that we can take together in order to save the lives of adoptable pets and feral cats in our county.

The meeting is from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm in the Bel Air branch of the Harford County Public Library. We have all three meeting rooms on the second floor reserved and hope to host a positive and productive exchange of ideas with like minded individuals who share our vision of a No Kill community. Bel Air, Maryland: In 2011, ShopRite, the grocery store cooperative with stores in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, donated 40,000 cans of food to local food banks in commemoration of 40 years of its annual Can Can Sale. Ring Factory Elementary School was selected as a 2011 Maryland Blue Ribbon School by the Maryland State Department of Education. The announcement made by Interim State Superintendent of Schools Bernard J. Sadusky named only six Maryland schools to receive this distinguished honor.

Prospect Mill Students Start Nesting Box Trail Project

The “Bluebirds of Happiness” English Language Learners (ELL) enrichment group at Prospect Mill Elementary School (PMES) has continued its study of birds this year by focusing on the Eastern Bluebird.

The combined third and fourth grade students in this group have explored the life cycle, the habitat and the nesting practices of these beautiful birds. As a part of the PMES No Mow Zone project, these students are developing a bluebird box trail. With the help of some very special friends at Home Depot in Bel Air, the students built nesting boxes that will be erected in the meadow in the spring. Read more...

(Belcamp, Maryland) The Harford County Public Library Foundation recently turned over a check for $50,000 to the Bel Air Branch for its Children’s Early Literacy Interactive Space.

More than forty partners for the project including elected officials, members of the community, and representatives from several groups who donated to the campaign attended the check ceremony and reception. The Greater Bel Air Community Foundation, the Bel Air Friends of HCPL, the Morris A.
