Haringey residents invited to ‘grow hope’ this Sunday

Organised by the Haringey Multi-Faith Forum and Haringey Multi-Faith Youth in collaboration with Haringey Council, this weekend’s gathering will allow local people the opportunity to: stand against hate and extremism; acknowledge the challenges facing Haringey communities and come together in a collective show of respect, strength and tolerance.

The afternoon’s activities, which will include clearing and tidying an area towards Turnpike Lane, a poetry writing activity and planting a rose bush, are in response to the recent countrywide arson attacks, increase in hate nationally and growing anxiety and fear within the community.

The rose flower has been chosen as a symbol of hardiness and strength and is meant to symbolise an acknowledgement that attendees wish to celebrate hope and love and stand together amid these uncertain times among our communities.

Light refreshments will be provided by local businesses and faith groups at the meeting point behind Café Roj in Ducketts Common, which – as the scene of the ‘Battle of Wood Green’ in 1977 – is a historically significant site for countering extremism and hate.

It’s hoped that the apt setting will serve as a timely reminder of the collective, community-based strength we have here in Haringey, and to remind everyone in the borough of the importance of togetherness and unity.

Hate has no home in Haringey.

Part of the Crouch End Festival, there will be activities for kids and children’s entertainment in between the café and the tennis courts and at the Philosophers’ Garden, where little ones* (*aged between two and eight) can enjoy a performance area, sing-alongs and storytimes between 12noon and 5pm.

Food and drink will be available from the Pavilion grassed area, with an eclectic mix of local music being showcased on the Pavilion Stage throughout an action-packed day.

The Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Dawn Barnes, will officially open proceedings at 11am followed by theatrical performances from nine local schools and a kids’ choir – each representing different decades across the 100 years of the park’s existence.

The London Metropolitan Brass Band, the Pan Nation Steel Orchestra and three other bands will be performing in the afternoon (from 1pm to 5pm, with ‘The Big Gig’ organised by the Crouch End Festival taking centre stage in the evening (6pm-11pm).

The Crouch End Festival are generously providing a lot of the equipment and staffing, but there are still many expenses associated with staging a community event of this scope and size.

Donations to help support the Friends of Priory Park cover the costs would be greatly appreciated and you can do so over on their SumUp webpage.

The Friends are also looking for volunteers on the day anytime from 2pm to 6pm to help with the following regular shifts:

Pack-up crew for taking down gazebos

Finding connection and conversation at your local library during Loneliness Awareness Week

Whether it’s for a chat, meeting in a group or simply a space to share, our libraries are community hubs that help bring people together not just for Loneliness Awareness Week, but all 52 weeks of the year!

Marcus Garvey Library will be hosting a ‘Coffee and Connection’ morning on Tuesday (16 June, 10:30am-12noon) in support of Loneliness Awareness Week and you’re warmly invited to attend for a chat over a cuppa.

Visiting your local library can help you feel more connected and less alone. You are always welcome in any of our nine libraries here in Haringey and you can find your nearest one on the Haringey Council website.

With 2026 being the National Year of Reading too, you can find books on loneliness – and discover some handy pointers and tips on how to counter it – by using the council’s online catalogue.

Whatever you’re into, why not ‘Go All In’ at your local library?

There are lots of fantastic arts and crafts and storytime sessions to celebrate Windrush Day (22 June) later this month.

You and your child/children can make your own ship and decorate it however you want at Hornsey Library (on Monday 22 June, 3:30pm-4:30pm, Suitable for ages 4+), craft a fun, creative and colourful carnival mask at Marcus Garvey Library (on Monday 22 June, 3:30pm-4:30pm, all ages welcome) and build a ship at Muswell Hill Library (on Tuesday 23 June, 3:45pm-4:45pm).

The author Everol Wilson will be presenting a historical Windrush exhibition and film screening entitled ‘Windrush 1948 – Through A Different Lense’ at Hornsey Library on Friday 26 June (12noon-5pm).

This event is not to be missed as it will explore what went on behind the scenes in Great Britain and its colonies before – and during – the so-called ‘Windrush years.’

Small Island (2009, Certificate: 15) – a movie about two women trying to fulfil their ambitions during World War II across London and Jamaica – will be shown at Marcus Garvey Library on Saturday 20 June (2pm-5pm) and Muswell Hill Library on Monday 22 June (2:30pm-5:30pm).

We’ll be showcasing powerful documentaries and feature films – telling real stories, exploring history and celebrating the voices that helped shape modern Britain – in Wood Green Library every Thursday at 4pm.

There’s also a special Windrush storytime at Muswell Hill Library next Wednesday morning (17 June, 11am-11:30am), when there will be a reading of John Agard’s ‘Windrush Child’ along with some other fun stories from our picture-book collection.

Funding sought for deaf pupils’ enrichment activities with new school minibus appeal

Staff at Blanche Nevile Primary School for Deaf Children on Storey Road in Highgate (N6 4ED) have set up a JustGiving page with a £10,000 target to go towards the expected £36,000 costs needed to replace their old minibus, which is nearing the end of its life cycle after 18 years of service.

Blanche Nevile School’s co-headteacher, Kathryn McCarthy, commented:

For most of our children, many experiences that are taken for granted by others are not always accessible for them.

The school minibus is the only way many of our pupils can attend trips, as public transport can pose a significant communication barrier for deaf people.

Additionally, the majority of our pupils rely on their local authority-provided transport to get home due to the distance they travel to attend our specialist school, so the minibus is essential to ensure they can attend trips further afield without the risk of returning late.

We also use the school minibus for pupils to travel between our primary and secondary sites for special events and celebrations as a school community.

The minibus at Blanche Nevile is used several times each week for a range of trips and visits, including:

Sports events, such as the London Youth Games and other competitions for young deaf people or those with disabilities
Educational visits, including art galleries, Kew Gardens, The Science Museum, the Tower of London and places of worship
Residential trips, which are an important part of the Blanche Nevile pupils developing their independence and exploring new adventures and places away from home and school
Weekly swimming lessons
Experiences such as competitions and visits to meet and mix with other deaf peers and deaf role models, as well as trips to ten-pin bowling, ice skating, the local cinema, theatres and the seaside

Kathryn added:

Many of our pupils come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Without a school minibus, we would be unable to offer these enriching experiences as part of our pupils’ education and cultural capital.

Any donations you can make to help us reach our £10,000 target will enable us to continue to enrich the lives of our deaf pupils. All donations will go towards the expected cost of £36,000 for our new minibus.
