The best in Enviromental Graphic Design - 2011 SEGD Design Awards

There was projects from multi-milion dollars to low-cost middle school supergraphic painting job project was at the top of highscore list for 2011 SEGD Design Awards. SEGD Design Awards is the annual program honoring the best in communication design for the built environment.

John Lutz, chair of the 2011 SEGD Design Awards jury says that variety of projects, budgets, places and years of contractors tell us that EGD is doing good and can impact to people how they could use public spaces.

"In addition to projects from expected venues- museums, sports facilities, corporate environments, and hospitals-we saw innovative graphics for parking garages, parks, schools, and even churches."

The winning projects were not only highly functional as signage, wayfinding, or exhibition design systems, but were often fully integrated into the environment, added Lutz.

"In a field of more than 450 excellent entries, the Design Awards program showed us how far the reach of EGD has extended," said Lutz, principal of Selbert Perkins Design."

Tips n' Tricks: Design Great Infographics - Part 1

Let's start. You all know what's infographics (or "Information Graphics"). For those who don't know please visit: Wikipedia. Infographics is the best way to compose complex information in stylish yet powerful and simple way. Infographics are the best way to present gathered and systematised data in the easiest way. They have been used all over the world, not only on Web and computers, but in magazines and metro stations. However, it's not easy to create an infographic, because you have to gather and sytematise data and combine into infographic and still make it to look good. This article will help you on your way creating your first infographic (those whom is not first time, will surely find something useful).

In this article I'll talk you about organization, accuracy and relevance.

First ingredient is organization.

Well organized and accurate (precise) information is the basis of every great infographic. You have to organize your infographic contextually and visually. If you have a great idea where to find data for your infographic, you're already did a lot of work. You really should know some things about your topic. Make sure the data you gathered is relevant to your topic and your sources of information is always the best one. Even the best designed infographic isn't interesting for reader if it isn't well organized. If you're technology geek, believe me, sometimes Google isn't enough, so visit your library for more information on your topic.

The best example I found researching for this post is infographic about earthquakes is a collaboration between GOOD and Column Five Media.

Second ingredient is accuracy.
When designing an infographic you have to be precise and accurate. Accuracy is essential. When scaling your data in charts and graphs it's very easy to make mistake. You should use mathematical equations, compare the numbers, compare the numbers again and then trough proportions divide your graphic, pie or donut. Never draw your statistic graphic, pie or donut by hand. You can use style for graphic which you want, but DO NOT draw it without base scale.

There's great example by by Column Five Media we can see perfect proportions being used.

Third ingredient is relevance.
It's simple. All graphic and style should be relevant to your topic. If you're creating infographic with topic on technology you should use techy styles and graphics, if your creating ifographic with topic on history you should use some oldie styles, etc.

The best example of relevance of style to the topic is the infographic by Visions Service Adventures.

This day, 2nd June 2011 is the date when life was given to this blog. We're just a little roster (?), but our time will come.
Now, seriously, every blog has his first post (aka "Hello world!"), so this, too.

May we remember 2nd June, so we all could celebrate our 1st birthday on 2nd June 2012.
