Event: Youth Inspiring Youth - Spring 2010 - Harlem Youth Gathering

Background:
The Coalition to Save Harlem will be hosting its second Harlem Youth Gathering on Saturday, April 17, 2010. The theme of the event this year is “Youth Inspiring Youth”. The theme and program for the event was developed with the input of community youth. The event will focus on youth between the ages of 15–22 years old and is a youth centered informational and educational event.

Because a major goal of the event is to make it as youth centered as possible, there will be opportunities for youth to share their experiences and organizational literature with those youth who are searching for ways to also perform positive actions in the community that lead to a better education, a sense of social responsibility and the development of effective leadership skills.

The day's program will open with libations to demonstrate honor and respect to the Ancestors. Resources and a mini Job Fair will be provided. Also, the program will include interactive discussion groups resulting in report backs. The youth will be encouraged to use their creativity to make “report backs” of what they discussed. For example, youth may determine in their discussion group to “report back” in the form of spoken word, a Hip Hop presentation, a short skit/role playing or other “report back” format of their choosing.

Discussion groups will focus on issues affecting the youth today such as youth organizing around the lost of student MetroCards and school closings, youth organizing around gentrification and other community issues, conflict resolution and information about their Rights (when stopped by the police, obtaining information of school records, etc.).

The "Event: It's All About You - Summer 2009 - Harlem Youth Gathering" is a Youth Centered informational and educational event for Harlem Youth. The day's events will focus on providing Resources, a Job Fair and providing information about their Rights (when stopped by the police, information of school record, etc.).

Because a major goal of the event is to make it as youth centered as possible, there will be opportunities for youth who are positively impacting the Harlem community to share their experiences and organization's literature with those youth who are searching for ways to also perform positive actions in the community that lead to a better education, a sense of social responsibility and the development of effective leadership skills.

There will be sessions where the Youth will be able to do "hands on" conflict resolution, learn about alternatives to incarceration, and "green" jobs.

There will be information available on the Building Trades, Registering to Vote, Housing Rights and Legal Services.

This blog was created by the Coalition to Save Harlem [CSH, the Coalition] as an educational and informational bulletin board for the Harlem Youth about local events and as a Sounding Board on issues affecting your quality of life, safety and right to an exceptional education.

You are our future, the Coalition wants you to have an outstanding one directed by the positive choices that you make.

Are you willing to help the CSH stay on point when it comes to what matters most to Harlem Youth. Are you willing to take on the challenge of interacting with other Youth to provide positive solutions to issues that affect you. Are you willing to blog about all these things?

The Coalition wants to help when we can, but we need to know from you "what is happening" and your ideas as to how to fix and improve things not only for yourselves but for all of the Village of Harlem.
