I want to go on the record here by saying that the harley Crossbones really presses all the right buttons for me. If you’ve read any of my chopper articles or visited my chopper site you know that I love bobbers. You may find this hard to believe but there was a time when the majority of Harley riders weren’t Doctors lawyers and dentists.  Back in the mists of time they were servicemen and pilots returning from the second world war.

These guys wanted to recapture the thrills of battle and flying so set about customising their preferred form of transport the motorcycle. They removed as much weight as possible so that the power to weight ration was higher and the bikes handled better. Harley have adopted the look and ethos of these bikes with the Crossbones.  I wonder if  the launch of the crossbones and the number of  servicemen returning from Iraq and Afghanistan is coincidence??

If you are considering the Crossbones personally I would hunt down a Black demim one they just look, right compared to the other colors. Everything from the springer front end with mini apehanger bars to the sprung seat are designed to make the bike look as authentic as possible. If you didn’t know it was a softtail you might easily think that it was a rigid framed bike.

This attention to detail and adding degrees of comfort will make this a real road warrior.

Harley recently revealed their models for 2009 the cheapest model is once again the XL Sporster 883 coming in at under $7000. At just around 25 inches hig this is the perfect bike if you lack height. The lower ride height is achieved by lowering the front and rear suspensions.
If you’ve been to this site before you’ll know how much we love the 883, it’s affordable, looks good and is a great way to enter into the Harley owning lifestyle. I have to admit though going through the 2009 Harley Davidson range another bike jumped out at me and set my heart strings purring… The Cross bones.

Or to give the cross bones it’s full name,The Harley-Davidson Softail Cross Bones FLSTSB I think I’ll stick with cross bones! I am a sucker for retro bobber styling and this bikes really grabs the essence of post war bobbers just looking at it makes me want to start building my own in the garage. There is something just so very right about it. I could see myself riding down long roads and doing hundreds of miles in a day. Something I have no desire to do on full dress cruisers!

Another bike I really like in the lineup is the Harley-Davidson XL 1200N Sportster 1200 Nightster There is just something about nightster that looks just right again. it’s a sportster with attitude and I would happily walk past most of the range and jump on it for a test ride.

If you get your cyclinders bored and have new pistons fitted this modification can cost as little as $500 dollars. If you want to buy new cycliders and pistons and keep your originals intact then you can purchase new cycliders and pistons for around $700-$800.

Obviously you’ll need to have a proper engineering workshop do the boring for you but with just a few specialist tools you can remove the cycliders and pistons yourself. Harleys are incedibly easy to work on so this is a great place to start.
