Organized by Nike+ NRC, the event was led by Mike Saes of the NYC BridgeRunners. Hundreds of people came out to run, pedal and push in celebration of Harold, with $13,500 raised in support of the Harold Hunter Foundation ($6,000 from individual donors and $7,500 from Nike).

The exhibit will feature artwork by OG New York skateboarders Nuri Bell, Jamal Simmons, Quim Cardona, and Ryan Sikorski. A special tribute will also be paid to the life and times of the late, great Harold Hunter. In addition, photos by renowned music industry shooters Mike Schreiber and Eric Johnson will be on display, with live music served up by DJ Brian Johnson and hip-hop collective Neo Canis.

A portion of proceeds from the event will support the development of the New London Skatepark Organization (NLSO). The NLSO is a skater founded and operated public charity on a mission to raise funds to aide the city of New London in building a skatepark in the downtown area.

With this year being the tenth anniversary of Harold Hunter Day, instead of a one-day event like usual, things were amplified to create an entire Harold Hunter Weekend. Huge thanks to primary sponsors Zoo York, G-Shock, Skullcandy, HUF and Volcom for helping to make it all possible.

The festivities kicked off on Friday night, May 20th, at City Lore in the East Village where a special “Skate Industry 101” panel discussion was held featuring Steve Rodriguez (5boro Skateboards), Ryan Clements (The Boardr & Excel Management), Jefferson Pang (DC Shoes) and renowned videographer RB Umali. The four industry vets broke down the ins and outs of what it takes to find success on the business side of skateboarding. Pro skater Austyn Gillette made a guest appearance as well.

On Saturday, May 21st, The Boardr Am hosted the NYC stop of its international contest series at the Coleman Oval/LES Skatepark. A special addition to Saturday’s event was the first-ever HHF Wildcard Contest presented by Skullcandy. The level of skateboarding was seriously elevated, and when it was all said and done, Jake Ilardi finished 1st, Maurio McCoy finished 2nd, and Derek Holmes finished 3rd. Derek also won the HHF Wildcard Contest which earned him a spot on Skullcandy’s new nolabel program. For crushing the competition, both Jake and Derek will receive an all-expenses paid trip to compete in The Boardr Am Finals at the Summer X Games in Austin, TX, this June.

On Saturday night, G-Shock hosted a special party at their SoHo store. Good times with good people!

The main event went down on Sunday, May 22nd, at the Coleman Oval/LES Skatepark. Like every year, Harold Hunter Day X brought together NYC’s tight-knit skate community in an amazing celebration of everything Harold loved most—skateboarding, music, friends, family, and the Big Apple.

More than 1,000 skaters and spectators flooded the park, with appearances by local legends and top pros. Live music kept the energy high, and throughout the day a variety of Best Trick contests were held on various skatepark obstacles. When the event was wrapping up, a massive product toss took place featuring free decks, headphones, t-shirts, hats, and much more.

Established in 2006 after Harold’s untimely passing, and managed by the non-profit Harold Hunter Foundation (HHF), Harold Hunter Day X will once again unite the tight-knit skate community in a celebration of everything Harold loved most—skateboarding, music, friends, family, and New York City.

Traditionally only a one-day affair, this year the festivities will be significantly amplified in recognition of the event’s tenth anniversary milestone. It will truly be an entire weekend dedicated to the life and times of the late, great Harold Hunter.

Brand-new this year is an exciting partnership with The Boardr Am, a renowned international contest series for top amateur skateboarders in which the winner of each stop receives an all-expenses paid trip to compete in the Finals at the Summer X Games in Austin, TX, this June. The NYC stop will take place on Saturday, May 21st from 11am-5pm at the Coleman Oval/LES Skatepark. Included in this stop of The Boardr Am will be the first-ever HHF Wildcard Contest presented by Skullcandy. Open to 20 local skaters, the top placing competitor will receive the same X Games trip as the overall contest winner. “I’ve been planning and executing skateboarding contests on a global scale for the past 20 years. When the Harold Hunter Foundation contacted me about having The Boardr Am partner with HH Day this year, I was instantly down to make it happen,” said Ryan Clements, co-founder of The Boardr Am. “I’m stoked on every trip to NYC, but especially when we get to host an Am contest. Dealing with pros and legends is rad, and a total honor, but working with amateur skaters and providing them with an opportunity that they may not normally get is truly fulfilling. In addition to The Boardr Am-sanctioned contest on Saturday, Harold Hunter Day X will also feature an all-ages skate jam on Sunday, May 22nd from Noon-5pm, with appearances by local legends and top pros. Throughout the day, a variety of best trick contests will be held on various skatepark obstacles with cash and prizes generously provided by event sponsors. Live music will be served up by acclaimed DJ, producer and lifelong skateboarder, TJ Mizell; son of the late Jam Master Jay of Run DMC. At the conclusion of the event, a massive product toss will take place featuring free skateboard decks, headphones, t-shirts, hats, and much more.

“It’s hard to believe my brother has been gone for a decade now,” said Ron Hunter, board member of the Harold Hunter Foundation. “Harold was truly one-of-a-kind; he was loved by so many and had so much love to give. It warms my heart to see his friends, family and even skaters who didn’t know him personally, band together through HH Day to skate, celebrate his legacy, and cultivate the positive energy that Harold was known for. HH Day is always one of the most fun skate events in NYC each year, and this year is going to better than ever!”

Additional activities slated for Harold Hunter Day X weekend include a special “Skate Industry 101” panel discussion hosted by Ryan Clements and 5boro Skateboards founder Steve Rodriguez. The informational session, which will take place on Friday night, May 20th at City Lore in the East Village, is a unique opportunity for the amateur skaters competing in the HHF Wildcard Contest to learn about the ins and outs of working in the skate industry from a panel of esteemed veterans.
