Hopefully you’re going to take advantage of a nice cool upcoming weekend by getting some overdue yard chores done. Only supposed to be in the 80′s and low 90′s-what a blessing!!

If you have a lawn, now is the time to get it ready for the long summer ahead. This is a great time to dethatch, aerate, and to make sure that your sprinkler system is working properly.Thatching and aerating will insure that light, nutrients, air, and water will reach the soil and roots more effectively. Thatching removes the layer of built up old growth, aerating opens up the soil and improves water penetration. The two processes done together can really improve your lawns ability to grow new roots, stems, shoots, etc. Doing these 2 things however can be negated if your sprinkler system is not delivering enough water. I just got off the phone with a long time customer who just aerated and still had brown spots. We had them measure the water output in the “hot spots” and they were only receiving about an inch of water over the period of 7 days. It takes around 3″ of water per week to have a satisfactory bermudagrass lawn!

So dethatch for sure(this time of year, not in the fall when overseeding!),aerate if you can and please check your water system output!!

If you need help give us a call we can walk you thru this or come out and consult if need be!

Here is a YouTube video of detatching a lawnclick on the picture!! Have a great cool weekend!!

Got Grape vines? If you do the notorious “skeletonizer” is on the prowel! Start checking the under side of leaves for the black and yellow striped caterpillar, and or looking for the little purple moth fluttering around your garden. These hungry rascals make a “skeleton” of your grape leaves in no time! B.T. aka “thuricide” or “dipel dust” is the safest and most effective control!

The winners this week for our $25 gift card are: Judy Wood, Scottsdale and Chris Fuller in Mesa!! Congratulations on your winnings and remember if you don’t, you can’t!!

The weather this week is going to be a roller coaster. Hot and windy then 20 degrees cooler by the weekend. Be sure you are monitoring your watering system and schedule! Mulching is very important in helping plants through stretches of hot and windy weather, be sure you are adding organic mulch around your most heat sensitive plants, flowers, and vegetables!

With a few very warm days this week the telephone and emails have been lively with questions about: what’s happening to this plant, how much do I water this, is it too hot for that…..Well it is time to adjust your watering system, hopefully. I say hopefully for a couple of reasons. One, the Harper Boys hope you adjusted your system for cooler weather this winter! So that would mean you need to increase the frequency of your watering now. One of the best tools for determining how and how often to water is the “watering by the numbers” guide put our by AMWUA and “Water Use It Wisely”! Click on the link to our website where you’ll find this brochure or you can pick up a copy FREE at either of our locations.

Other ways to improve your plant’s health and save water are:

Be sure your sprinkler heads are working properly

Adjust and or change to low flow sprinkler heads

Be sure your sprinkler timer is set to correct time and date and the back up battery has been replaced

Mulch,Mulch,and Mulch some more!

Using bark mulch or organic compost to insulate and keep moisture in the ground longer around your plant is perhaps the single most underused gardening technique here in the valley. Perhaps it is because of the decorative rock nature of our landscapes and folks are hesitant to put “litter” around the base of plants , we’re not sure. If you want better looking plants, less weeds, and you want to use less water, than apply 2-6″ of bark, mulch, clippings…any type of organic material ( it doesn’t have to be composted to use this way) at the base of your plants and I guarantee you’ll see the difference!! This is especially effective around rose bushes, fruit trees, flower beds and vegetable gardens. Low water use plants will benefit also. Go into the desert and see how native plants grow. They are branched clear to the ground and under neath is a layer of “litter” or leaf drop that “mulches” the plants and helps them get through long hot summers! If Mother Nature pruned her desert trees and shrubs off the ground and vacumed away all the leaf litter-I’d venture to say most of even the toughest of these would be severely stressed out by Summers End!

Click on the “Rosie On The House” coupon to save 20% on any Grow Well soil or bark product this weekend!!

Good Growin’ and stay tuned to 92.3fm KTAR Saturday at 8am for more great garden information from the Harper Boys!
