War Graves Week invites people in Harrogate to discover the stories behind war graves in their local communities and share their own connections to the World Wars. War graves in Harrogate contain personal stories of First and Second World War service hidden in plain sight. The mother of a young model who sadly died from brain cancer at the age of 24 has been left “gobsmacked” by the quality of treatment-friendly clothing designed by degree-level students from York College. A range of dress shirts has been produced in the memory of Emily Rhodes by the first-year BA (Hons) Fashion Design and Garment Technology undergraduates in collaboration with fashion brand EmAble. Thousands of children in care are set to receive stronger support to maintain relationships with their brothers and sisters with a proposed new law that has been shaped by the experiences of a North Yorkshire care leaver. The planned legislation places a clear duty on all local authorities in England and Wales to promote and arrange contact between brothers and sisters who are separated while in care. Parliament has supported the new framework, which has been shaped by the efforts of campaigners including Jonny Hoyle, who was a child in the care system before becoming a North Yorkshire Council employee.

Ripon Runners trio celebrate their first London Marathon

Ripon Runners members Sara Barker, David Brown and James Pollington-Clyne are all celebrating the successful completion of their first London Marathon, which took place on Sunday 26th April. As well as the huge achievement of completing such an iconic event, their sterling efforts also helped raise money for worthy causes – including the MND Association for Motor Neurone Disease and the Blue Cross animal welfare charity. Sara, from Coxwold, first had to recover from knee surgery last September, before embarking on a Couch-to-5k program to regain her fitness and build up her distance and stamina from there. Arran Barber has been with North Yorkshire Council-owned property consultancy Align since 2022 and currently works as an apprentice architectural technologist. Rare Massey‑Harris tractor in the spotlight after remarkable restoration journey

A rare mid‑1950s Massey‑Harris 744D tractor is set to take pride of place at Tractor Fest this summer as part of the event’s celebration of Scottish engineering. The tractor has been restored by Ripon farmer and wagon driver Mark Dean who, together with his father, spent 18 months bringing the tractor back to life, sourcing authentic parts, repairing worn components and reinstating the distinctive Massey‑Harris red and yellow livery.
