Factors include the financial downturn, US healthcare reform, emerging global markets, and the accelerating pace of technological advances. A visiting Harvard medical professor, a London-based M&A banker and a research foundation director will discuss the new competitive vs. collaborative models for stimulating innovation in the medical sector in the US and in Europe.
This event will bring a unique insight of the interactions between ideas and money in the highly competitive health sector.

- Dr. Baron is internationally known for his groundbreaking advances in bone biology. His research is the basis for the development of novel therapies to prevent bone loss such as that in arthritis and osteoporosis.

From 1975 to 2008, Dr. Baron began a long career at Yale University where held several positions at Yale and became a tenured full professor.

In 2002 he founded ProSkelia, a small pharmaceutical company devoted to the discovery and development of new drugs for bone and hormonal dependent diseases. . Between 1994 and 2002, he also held the position of vice president and head of the Bone Diseases Group at Hoechst Marion Roussel and then Aventis.

Since 2008, Prof Baron chairs the Department Head and Professor of Oral Medicine, Infection, and Immunity at Harvard Medical School. He is also the chief editor of Bone, the Official Journal of the International Bone and Mineral Society.

- David Tancredi is a graduate of Harvard Medical School. David is currently the Scientific Director and member of the Board of Directors of the Fondation Leducq (www.flcq.org), France. Grants from the Fondation Leducq provide up to $6,000,000 over five years to European-North American research teams pursuing collaborative work in cardiovascular and neurovascular disease. The Fondation is also associated with Broadview Ventures Inc., a venture philanthropy firm whose mission is to accelerate the development of promising technology through targeted investment in early stage ventures.

- Julien Fouter is Head of EMEA Healthcare M&A at Deutsche Bank. He joined Deutsche Bank in 2005 after spending seven years at Merrill Lynch in M&A. Julien graduated from ESCP Europe and holds an MBA from Harvard Business School.

He was actively involved in recent healthcare transactions, advising Advent International on its acquisition of Priory Group (UK mental healthcare specialist and care homes operator), and Shire on its public-to-private acquisition of Movetis (Belgian biotech focused on the gastrointestinal therapeutic area).

Julien has an extensive track record in M&A advisory, including involvements in landmark transactions such as Pernord Ricard's acquisition of V&S, InBev's acquisition of Anheuser-Busch and Schneider's acquisition of Areva Transmission & Distribution jointly with Alstom.

Stanley Hoffmann is the Buttenwieser University Professor at Harvard, where he has taught since 1955. He has been the Chairman of Harvard's Center for European Studies from its creation in 1969 to 1995. Professor Hoffmann was born in Vienna in 1928. He lived and studied in France from 1929 to 1955; he has taught at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques of Paris, from which he graduated, and at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales.

At Harvard, he teaches French intellectual and political history, American foreign policy, post-World War Two European history, the sociology of war, international politics, ethics and world affairs, modern political ideologies, and the development of the modern state. Among his publications, Decline or Renewal? France Since the 30's (1974); Primacy or World Order: American Foreign Policy since the Cold War (1978); Duties Beyond Borders (1981); Janus and Minerva (1986); The European Sisyphus (1995); The Ethics and Politics of Humanitarian Intervention (1997); World Disorders (1998); and Gulliver Unbound (2004). He is co-author of The Mitterrand Experiment (1987); The New European Community (1991); and After the Cold War (1993). His Tanner lectures of 1993, on the French nation and nationalism, were published in 1994. He is working on a book on ethics and international affairs.

Serge Schmemann is a 1991 Pulitzer Prize winner in international reporting for coverage of the reunification of Germany, became editorial page editor for the International Herald Tribune in May 2003. Since March 2001 Mr. Schmemann had been a senior foreign affairs writer based in New York and writer for the United Nations bureau covering regular news analyses, news articles and takeouts on major international issues.

Previously Mr. Schmemann served as deputy foreign editor at The New York Times since August 1999 after having served as a reporter on the metropolitan desk since September 1998. Before that he served as Jerusalem bureau chief from July 1995 until September 1998 and as the Moscow bureau chief from March 1992 until February 1994, after having returned to Moscow as a correspondent in January 1991. Prior to that, he served as bureau chief in Bonn since May 1987 and as a foreign correspondent in Moscow from April 1981 until May 1987. Mr. Schmemann joined The Times as a metropolitan reporter in December 1980. Mr. Schmemann was educated at The Kent School in Connecticut. He received a B.A. degree in English from Harvard University in 1967 and an M.A. degree in Slavic studies from Columbia University in 1971.

How are digital technologies transforming our cities?

Digital technologies have already begun to change our cities. The lecture will discuss some key aspects of these ongoing changes, like the rise of a knowledge-based economy, the new importance given to the individual dimension or the hybridization between physical and electronic spaces. The accent will be put on the concrete and often sensory dimensions of some of these changes as well as on their implications for urban design and architecture.

Antoine Picon, Professor, Department of Architecture. Picon is Professor of the History of Architecture and Technology and Co-Director of Doctoral Programs (PhD & DDes) at the GSD. He teaches courses in the history of architecture and technology. Trained as an engineer, architect, and historian of science and art, Picon is best known for his work in the history of architectural technologies from the eighteenth century to the present. His French Architects and Engineers in the Age of Enlightenment (1988; English translation, 1992) is a study of the disciplinary "deep structures" of architecture, garden design, and engineering in the eighteenth century, and their transformations as new issues of territorial management and infrastructure-systems planning were confronted. In addition to six other books, Claude Perrault (1613-1688) ou la curiosité d'un classique (1988), L'Invention de L'ingénieur moderne, L'Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées 1747-1851 (1992), La ville territoire des cyborgs (1998), and Les Saint-Simoniens: Raison, Imaginaire, et Utopie (2002), Tra utopia e ruggine, Paesaggi dell'ingegneria dal Settecento a oggi (2006), Marc Mimram Architect-Engineer: Hybrid (2007). Picon’s last book, Digital Culture in Architecture (2001) is a synthetic overview of the changes brought to architecture and the city by digital technologies. Picon received engineering degrees from the Ecole Polytechnique and from the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussees, an architecture degree from the Ecole d'Architecture de Paris-Villemin, and a doctorate in history from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales.

Gary P. Pisano - Gary Pisano is the Harry E. Figgie Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School. He has been on the Harvard faculty for 22 years. During this time, he has taught MBA and executive level courses on technology and operations management, operations strategy, competitive strategy, product development, and the management of innovation. Professor Pisano's research has examined technology strategy, the management of innovation, organizational learning, outsourcing, and the management of intellectual property. His research, teaching, and consulting on these issues span a range of science and technology based industries including aerospace, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, health care, computers, software, telecommunications, and semiconductors.

Pisano is the author of over 70 articles and case studies. His "Restoring American Competitiveness" (co-authored with Willy Shih) won the McKinsey Award for best article published in Harvard Business Review in 2009. He is also co-author of the award winning article, "Dynamic Capabilities and Strategic Management" (Strategic Management Journal, 1997), the most-cited publication in economics and business from 1995-2005. His article "How to Capture Value from Innovation: Shaping Intellectual Property and Industry Architecture" (California Management Review) was a finalist for the 2008 Accenture Award. He has also written case studies on such companies as Amazon, BMW, ITT-Automotive, IBM, Intel, Jet Blue, Merck, Eli Lilly, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Teradyne, and Flextronics. He is the author of six books including The Development Factory; Operations, Strategy, and Technology (with co-authors Robert Hayes, David Upton, and Steve Wheelwright); and Science Business: The Promise, The Reality and The Future of Biotech.

Professor Pisano is currently writing a book on the challenges facing U.S. competitiveness in high-technology industries. Professor Pisano has served as an advisor to senior executives at leading companies in the United States and Europe in the aerospace, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medical device, computer, software, electronics, and financial services industries. In addition, Pisano has served on the Board of Directors and Advisory Boards of a number of start-up companies. He speaks widely at industry conferences and to senior executive audiences. MICHÈLE LAMONT is Robert I. Goldman Professor of European Studies and Professor of Sociology and African and African American Studies at Harvard University. She is a fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and is co-director of its research program on Successful Societies.

Lamont’s scholarly interests center on shared concepts of worth and excellence, and their impact on hierarchies in a number of social domains. She has written on how the meanings given to worth (including moral worth) to ethno-racial and class inequality, on the definitions and determinants of societal excellence, and on the evaluation of excellence in higher education. Recent areas of interest include group boundaries, racism and anti-racism (how members of stigmatized groups respond to racism and discrimination), how culture matters for poverty, shared criteria of evaluation for qualitative social sciences, disciplinary cultures, and interdisciplinarity . A former Guggenheim fellow, her research has been supported by the Center for Advanced Research in the Behavioral Sciences, the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the Institute for Advanced Studies, the Lilly Endowment, the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies, the Russell Sage Foundation, and the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada. She has also received numerous grants from the National Science Foundation. She serves on the editorial boards of a number of journals and the advisory boards in Europe, Canada, and the United States. She also served as chair of the Council for European Studies from 2006 to 2009. In 2010 she was appoited to the Haut Conseil de la Science and Technologie, which helps the French government develop policies in the areas of higher education, research, and science and technology. She also serves on a number of scientific and advisory boards in the United States and Europe.

Born in Toronto in 1957, Lamont received a B.A. (1978) and a Masters (1979) in political theory at Ottawa University, before pursuing her doctoral research in sociology at the Université de Paris, where she graduated in 1983. She held a post-doctoral fellowship at Stanford University (1983-1985) and took her first position at the University of Texas at Austin (1985-1987). Appointed Assistant Professor of Sociology at Princeton University in 1987, she was promoted to tenure in 1993 and to the rank of full professor in 2000. She moved to Harvard University in 2003 and was appointed Robert I. Goldman Professor of European Studies in 2006.

In 2009 and 2010, she served as Senior Advisor to Faculty Development and Diversity in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. She launched a mentoring program for FAS tenure-track faculty and took various measures to help FAS diversify its faculty. MORE INFORMATION:	Chine Lanzmann is a US trained and nationally acclaimed coach and mentor specializing in successful women and leadership. She is the author of six books, her last one titled « Gagner sa Vie en se Faisant Plaisir.» She created a method called « Woman Impact » to help women find their place and their voice in their workplace. She works with CAC40 companies in the finance, communications and industrial sectors. She often leads workshops and trainings for those companies as well as for various networks (Essec, Science-Po and HEC), intra-corporate networks and her own women’s network. Her work has been talked about in numerous media, including Madame Figaro, Elle, and le Nouvel Economiste. Background on the George C. Marshall Center at the Hôtel de Talleyrand: Located at the heart of Paris near the Place de la Concorde, the Hôtel de Talleyrand is among the most important historic European buildings under the stewardship of the US Department of State. This former grand residence was the site of the administration of the Marshall Plan, when the building was purchased by the US government after World War II. Built between 1767 and 1769, the Hôtel de Talleyrand was designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel and its interiors were designed by Jean-François-Thérèse Chalgrin, one of the most prominent architects in 18th-century France. former White House advisor and foreign affairs writer

Leah Pisar has just published a book on transatlantic relations, “Orage sur l’Atlantique: La France et les Etats-Unis face à l’Irak” (Fayard, 2010). In the Clinton administration, she served in the White House as Director for communications at the National Security Council, at the US State Department and the US Embassy in Paris. She is a founding member of the National Security Network and has been an adviser to the French-American Foundation, a visiting scholar at the Center for American Progress and the Institut Français des Relations Internationales. She is a frequent television, print and radio commentator on current affairs on both sides of the Atlantic. She holds a BA from Harvard College, a graduate degree from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques of Paris and a doctorate from the University of Paris II. She serves on the board of the French-American Foundation and the National Security Network, is a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a Young Leader of the American Council on Germany and was a 2009 « Rising Talent » of the Women’s Forum for the Economy and Society.

WHAT:	For this event, you can enjoy an intimate evening with Harvard-educated Franco-American writer/academic/former White House official Leah Pisar over dinner at the lovely L'envue restaurant. Pisar has just published a book called "Orage sur l'Atlantique." This well-researched book is on the US-France debate over war in Iraq based on Pisar's PhD thesis. This evening's discussions will be centered around a non-fiction book written in French by a Harvard-educated Franco-American writer-academic and former White House official.

Spectacular President Faust Dinner at Hôtel de Lassay

Once through through the General Assembly's security and coat check, one was bedazzled by the brilliance and glamor of the gilded walls, enormous chandeliers and rich curtains of the Hôtel de Lassay, now the residence for the National Assembly's president. Built in the early 1700s for Armand de Madaillan, marquis de Lassay, this building shares a colorful history with the adjacent building--the Palace de Bourbon.

After the 250 guests arrived, enjoyed some champagne and hors d'oeuvres, everyone was called to dinner at tables decorated with historical names related to Harvard. HCF president Philippe Le Corre said a brief welcome and then introduced Député du Puy-de-Dôme for the UMP governing party and Chairman of the France-USA Friendship Group at the Assemblée Nationale, Louis Giscard d'Estaing. Representing Assembly president Accoyer, Mr. Giscard d'Estaing spoke eloquently of the connections between France and America, leading graciously into president of Harvard Drew Gilpin Faust's speech. Faust focused on three aspects of breaking down "boundaries:" improving undergraduate access to Harvard; transdisciplinary dialogue and learning on campus; and intellectual outreach and openness to the world beyond campus.

Between the glittery setting, the titillating speeches and conversations and delectable nourishment, it was a sublime evening.

Open House at the Jeu de Paume

They came in droves and learned how to drive...a ball across the court. Some came in their tennis whites, others took the opportunity to purchase an authentic Harvard Club of France t-shirt. And some came just to sip champagne and watch the pros and amateurs alike play the historic game of Jeu de Paume at the HCF's Open House of the Société Sportive du Jeu de Paume et de Racquets on Thursday, November 18th.

On this crisp Fall night, over 50 Harvard people and members of other University Alumni associations in Paris came to the Jeu de Paume building. We heard a history of the game and welcoming words by HCF president Philippe Le Corre. Organized by Kai Carver, along with Jeu de Paume club president and Harvard alum Wesley Johnson, Jr., the evening allowed the club to show off some of their new renovations.

While the game remains the same, the club is changing. And Mr. Johnson wanted to be sure HCF members know: "There remains some availability for new members at the Jeu de Paume. The Club is offering preferential financial conditions to members of The Harvard Club of France. For more information and to schedule an interview with the Admission Committee, please contact Danny Mandil at 01 47 27 46 86." This sounds like a good deal--it's a special place; a little hide-away, if you like, where you can play a game as intricate as the Royal decrees from whence it was formed.
