Sunday, January 29th, 6:15pm-7:30pm: Student Spaghetti Supper. Please join us in DiGiovanni Hall immediately following Student Mass for the Catholic Student’s Association’s traditional spaghetti supper, brought to you by the Knights of Columbus. A brief information presentation on the Knights will be given, and Council information and Rush sign-ups will be available.

Monday, January 30th, 6pm-7:30pm: Dinner and Meet & Greet. Please join us in the Harvard Catholic Center student lounge for pizza and drinks. Meet the fellow council brothers, learn more about our activities and mission, and enjoy free dinner. All are welcome. Casual attire.

Thursday, February 2nd, 8:30-11pm: Adoration and Card Tournament. Accompany the Brothers in prayer for a Holy Hour in the Catholic Center chapel (to include a rosary and a directed meditation). Monopoly Deal card tournament to follow. No prior experience necessary! All are welcome. Casual attire.

Friday, February 3rd, 6:30pm: First Friday Holy Mass at Boston Cathedral. Join the Brothers for Holy Mass in the Extraordinary Form at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross. Dinner in the North End to follow. Meet outside the ticket gates, downstairs in the Harvard Square T station, in front of the ticket machines, at 6:30pm. Dress appropriately for Mass, coat and tie encouraged. While other Rush events will be payed for, we regret that dinner in the North End will be at each person’s own expense. There is no obligation to attend dinner.

Saturday, February 4th, 6:30pm: Candlepin Bowling at Sacco’s! Join us to pray the rosary in the Upper Church before heading to Sacco’s for candlepin bowling and dinner! Dinner will be provided courtesy of our Worthy Financial Secretary. Candidates’ bowling will be sponsored by current Brothers. Meet in the Narthex (front entry) of St. Paul's Church. All are welcome. Casual attire.

Sunday, February 5th, 3:00pm: Initiation and Holy Mass. Registration prior to the Exemplification of the First Degree (Initiation) will take place in Room 203 of the Harvard Catholic Center at St. Paul Parish. [Brothers, as candidates are preparing in the Antechamber, Room 203, please arrive and prepare in the Degree Chamber, Room 202.] Candidates only for registration. Formal attire (shirt and tie, coat encouraged) for all present. Following the First Degree, all Brothers are invited to attend Holy Mass together at 5pm in the Lower Church.

A special event for Brothers and new initiates only will take place later Sunday evening and will be announced after Exemplification.

Membership Requirements

At events, candidates are encouraged to meet the Brothers, ask questions, and learn about the mission of the Knights of Columbus and our Council's work. Candidates should obtain and complete a Form-100 Membership Document, which will be available at all Council events, or upon request. Finally, all men seeking membership must attend the Exemplification of the First Degree on Sunday, February 5th, 2011.

What does a life-affirming feminism have to say about the sexual choices we make? About crisis pregnancies? An authentic feminism demystifies the ideological forces that construct our desires in ways that alienate us from ourselves. There can be no social justice without such critical consciousness. What does it really take to advance the cause of girls and women (and therefore of boys and men) in a hook-up world that commodifies and banalizes sexual behavior? How can men and women be truly happy over the course of a lifetime? Please come to learn more at this insightful dinner presentation. All are welcome.

Angela Franks, Ph.D., is Director of Theology Programs, and also serves as a professor of theology, for the Theological Institute for the New Evangelization (TINE) at Saint John’s Seminary in Boston. She holds a doctorate in theology from Boston College and an M.A. in philosophy from The Catholic University of America. Angela is a committed pro-life feminist and pursues the creation of a civilization of love in all that she does. She served, with her husband David, as the coordinator for the Massachusetts Catholic Conference’s marriage initiative, “The Future Depends on Love,” co-hosting a series of the same name on CatholicTV. She is the author of Margaret Sanger’s Eugenic Legacy: The Control of Female Fertility (2005), an acclaimed work, and contributed to the highly praised anthology, Women, Sex, and the Church: A Case for Catholic Teaching (2010). She writes and speaks on abortion, eugenics, the Theology of the Body, marriage, Humanae vitae, life issues, and feminism, among other topics.

J. David Franks, Ph.D., is a member of the full-time faculty of Saint John’s Seminary in Boston, teaching courses in systematic and moral theology. He also serves as the Vice-President for Mission of the Theological Institute for the New Evangelization (TINE), which is the Seminary’s initiative to provide lay formation. Deeply committed to advancing a truly emancipatory feminism, he employs a Christian critique of ideology that combines scholarly expertise in philosophy and theology with a passion for social justice. David serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Massachusetts Citizens for Life (MCFL), as well as serving as a trustee of the Pro-Life Committee at St. Paul’s Parish in Cambridge. He is an esteemed brother Knight of Columbus, serving as a trustee of the Bl. Pope John Paul II Council at Harvard University, where he is invited to speak annually during the White Ribbon Against Pornography (WRAP) week on campus. David and Angela are the grateful parents of five children.

Today, the brothers attended a talk by Fr. John Jay Hughes '48: "From Harvard WASP to Catholic Priest." At his presentation, Fr. Hughes also promoted his new autobiography,

"No Ordinary Fool: A Testimony to Grace," published in 2008.

After attending Harvard College, Fr. Hughes went on to serve for six years as a priest in the Episcopal Church, before converting to Roman Catholicism in 1960 and receiving conditional ordination to Catholic Holy Orders in 1968.

During his homily at student mass following the talk, Fr. Hughes reminded us of the importance of constant preparation for death and for spending an eternity in the kingdom of God. As the medieval morality play "Everyman" teaches us, only good deeds, and not wealth, fame, or fortune can follow us in death.

After mass, the brothers invited Fr. Hughes to dinner in Dunster House dining hall, where Father shared many great stories about his days at Fair Harvard.

Typically, members of the Pope John Paul II Council have some affiliation with Harvard University, though exceptions to this may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Feast of the Most Holy Rosary

(1) First Friday Latin Mass: The monthly pilgrimage to Holy Cross Cathedral in Boston on First Fridays continues. On this the anniversary of the victory at Lepanto, we will meet in the pit (inside) of the Harvard Square T stop to leave at 6:45 pm. Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite is celebrated at 7:30pm. If you haven't been before, we strongly encourage it. Booklets with explanations are provided.

(2) The Knights of Columbus Film Series: The Council's film series resumes with a personal favorite, Mario Puzzo's "The Godfather." This film will be shown in the Harvard Catholic Center Lounge at approximately 10:00pm, upon returning from Holy Mass at the cathedral. Please look forward to future showings of The Godfather Part II and Part III.

The Harvard Knights of Columbus, Bl. Pope John Paul II Council 14188, sent a delegation to this year's annual College Council Conference, held at the Omni Hotel and at the Supreme Council in downtown New Haven, CT. Impressively, our delegation was the largest in Harvard's history and also the largest group present from any campus. For an exclusive video highlight of the conference, please click here.

The theme of this year’s College Council Conference – “So that the world may know new hope” – guided the weekend’s collective conversation through addresses, small group sessions and Masses, as Knights gathered skills and approaches for their respective councils, from across the globe.

Over the weekend, the conference looked at membership and recruitment strategies, leadership development, peer mentoring and what it is to be a Catholic gentleman. Holy Mass was celebrated each day. The conference brought together more than 140 Knights from 69 schools throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada and the Dominican Republic. Joining the College Knights were 11 chaplains who serve the spiritual needs of these College Councils and journey with them to the conference each year.

The keynote speaker for Friday’s awards banquet was Sir Knight Captain Alfredo Fuentes of the FDNY (Ret.). He held everyone in rapt attention with his story of saving lives as the towers of the World Trade Center collapsed on 9/11. Crushed underneath thousands of tons of rubble, he miraculously survived. He told us of the bravery of the dozens of other Knights who died that day in the line of duty, imploring us as Catholic men to put our holy faith in action for others, no matter what the cost. Indeed, Fuentes encouraged brother Knights to walk in charity: “Embrace teamwork, and leave words like ‘I’ behind. Use words like ‘we’ and ‘us’ and you will accomplish great things.” With this advice, Fuentes told the Knights that they will find the courage and strength to “become the type of leaders that our world desperately needs."

Following Capt. Fuentes was Worthy Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. Transitioning from Fuentes’ story, Anderson noted how the events of Sept. 11 made us face a series of questions: “Who we are, and who do we want to be? What have we done, and what do we want to do in the future?” He tasked the Knights to evangelize using their actions, exhibiting spiritual and moral strength. “Walk the walk,” he said. “That’s what the Knights of Columbus is about: Offering a place for men to make that stand.” He challenged the group to give the charity of the gift of themselves. “The Church is not looking for your contribution 10, 20 or 30 years from now,” he said. “The Church is looking for your contribution today. The Church needs you now, and your community needs you now.”

On Saturday, brothers sat in on strategy sessions and gathered in regional caucuses to share their respective experiences and discuss ways to strengthen College Councils and evangelize on university campuses. In the evening, brothers gathered at St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, the birthplace of the Knights of Columbus, to conduct a thrilling exemplification of the 3rd Degree in the church's basement, where it all began in 1882. Afterwards, the brothers moved upstairs to venerate the sacred remains of our founder, the Venerable Fr. Michael McGivney, and to worship Our Lord Jesus Christ in solemn Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction.

After the closing Mass and departure on Sunday morning, brothers were full of hope that the graces abounding from this weekend’s blessed events in New Haven would follow us back to our respective Councils and renew our zeal to build that Civilization of Love for which the world so desperately hungers.

On September 23, 2011, Brother Officers of the Harvard Knights of Columbus had the opportunity to attend the third "Annual Celebration of the Priesthood," hosted by the Archdiocese of Boston at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston. As reported in The Pilot, America's oldest Catholic newspaper: "the proceeds of the event will directly benefit the Clergy Funds, which supports the health, financial and retirement benefits of the nearly 700 active and senior priests in the archdiocese."

Rev. Robert Reed, President of CatholicTV, served as emcee; in addition to His Eminence, whose speech is linked here, other speakers included the event co-chairs, Douglas and Joanie Kingsley, the Executive Director of Clergy Benefits for the Archdiocese of Boston, Joseph D'Arrigo, and an inspirational theology teacher and football and swimming coach at Catholic Memorial School, Christopher Boyle.

An estimated 1,700 individuals were in attendance,

and over a million dollars was raised to benefit the clergy.

On September 21, 2011, Feast of St. Matthew the Apostle, Br. Christopher Oppermann (Grand Knight) and Br. Juan Carmona (Financial Secretary) joined Rev. Michael Drea, Pastor of St. Paul Parish and Senior Harvard Catholic Chaplain, for the celebration of the Holy Mass on CatholicTV, which may be accessed here from the digital archives.

Daily Mass can be seen LIVE on CatholicTV and Boston’s WBPX, Channel 68 weekdays at 9:30 a.m. and Saturdays on CatholicTV at 9:30 a.m. The online Mass is also re-broadcast on CatholicTV at 7 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. Monday through Friday (all times Eastern).

You can also view it LIVE or "on demand" via the CatholicTV's web site. CatholicTV is a 24/7 television network that broadcasts local and national religious programming and live events for the Catholic Church in America.

Fall 2011: Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

It is now time to begin settling into our weekly routines, and that routine is not complete without time in prayer with the Blessed Sacrament. Please note that each Brother member is required to sign-up for at least one 30 minute period of Adoration per month; all Brother Officers of the Council must commit to a weekly slot.

The Council is responsible for covering Adoration slots from 9:00-10:00PM, Monday through Thursday. Because of our commitment to prayer, we were able to extend Adoration for this extra half hour each night. You are not only growing in your interior life, but you are being a great witness and servant of the rest of the Harvard Catholic Community.

Traditionally, the Brothers of our Council have taken the latest hours so that no women have to walk home on their own. If there are any questions, especially if you cannot commit weekly and want to make other arrangements, then please email Br. Matthew Menendez (menendez [at] college.harvard.edu) to make appropriate plans. For example, if you commute to our community at St. Paul Parish, we can help you to find local Adoration opportunities.

When: Stop in at any point Monday-Thursday 8:00-10:00PM for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Also, stop by anytime throughout the day to visit Our Lord in His tabernacle, where He waits for you.

Where: To find the Adoration Chapel, enter the Catholic Center building through the main doors in the courtyard on the 29 Mt. Auburn side. The Adoration Chapel is to the left of the reception desk.

Sunday, September 11th, 6:15pm-7:30pm: Information Session, Meet n’ Greet. Please join us in the Harvard Catholic Center Lounge (20 Arrow St.) immediately following Student Mass to learn about our Rush week activities, inquire more about the Knights of Columbus, and to meet the Brothers of the Harvard Council; special guests of the Harvard Daughters of Isabella will also be present. Pizza dinner provided. All are welcome. Post-Mass attire. For anyone wishing to participate in Harvard's 9/11 commemoration vigils following this Rush event, please refer to the full schedule here.

Monday, September 12th, 7pm-8pm: Inaugural Meeting of the Knights-Daughters' Holy Family Society. Please join us in Room 202 of the Harvard Catholic Center to attend the first meeting of our joint catechesis group, which will meet throughout the semester to foster bible study, the interior life, and understanding the teachings of Holy Mother Church. At this meeting, we will also discuss the forthcoming Catholicism project by Rev. Robert Barron, to be screened this fall at St. Paul Parish. All are welcome. Casual attire.

Tuesday, September 13th, 8:30pm-11:30pm: Super Tuesday Monopoly Deal

Tournament! Hosted by Br. Carlos Sanchez in the Harvard Catholic Center Lounge, this collaborative effort is our first Monopoly Deal tournament with the Harvard Catholic Student Association! Come and learn how to play this intriguing, fast-paced card version of Monopoly; no prior experience is necessary. For your convenience, instructions are linked here and a virtual tutorial is located here! All are welcome. Casual attire.

Thursday, September 15th, 6-7pm: Serving the Community as Catholic Gentlemen. Candidates and friends of the Council are invited to accompany Brothers to Cambridge Rehabilitation and Nursing Center (formerly Vernon Hall Nursing Home) at 8 Dana Street, as we visit and pray with the elderly. All are welcome. Casual attire. (Please meet in the St. Paul Parish Courtyard at 5:55pm to walk over as a group). After this service project, all are invited, especially graduate students and young-adult professionals, to a spaghetti dinner in the Harvard Catholic Center Lounge.

Friday, September 16th: Bid Day for Fall Rush 2011. Electronic and/or printed bids will be distributed to Catholic gentlemen invited for fraternal membership on Sunday, September 18th.

Saturday, September 17th, 3pm: The Importance of Sacramental Confession. A lecture sponsored by Rev. George Salzmann, OSFS, and the Harvard Knights of Columbus, in the Upper Church by the Reconciliation Room, on the reality of sin in our lives and the importance of reconciliation and daily payer, in particular devotion to Our Lady. Confession is offered following this talk. All are welcome. Casual attire.

Saturday, September 17th, 7pm: Rosary followed by Poker (K)Night! Candidates and guests are invited to join us in the Adoration Chapel of the Harvard Catholic Center (29 Mount Auburn Street) for the recitation of the Most Holy Rosary. Afterwards, all are invited to join us for a Council poker match at a special (historic!) location on campus, which will only be revealed after the Rosary is finished; no prior poker experience is necessary. All are welcome. Casual attire.

Sunday, September 18th, 3-4:30pm: Initiation and Holy Mass. Registration prior to the Exemplification of the First Degree (Initiation) will take place in Room 203 of the Harvard Catholic Center at St. Paul Parish. [Brothers, as candidates are preparing in the Antechamber, Room 203, please arrive and prepare in the Degree Chamber, Room 202.] Candidates only for registration. Formal attire (shirt and tie) for all present. Following the First Degree, all Brothers are invited to attend Holy Mass together at 5pm in the Lower Church. Dinner will be sponsored by the Council immediately following Holy Mass.

Membership Requirements

To join the Knights of Columbus, a man must be at least 18 years of age and a practical Catholic. Typically, members of the Pope John Paul II Council have some affiliation with Harvard University, though exceptions to this may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Any man interested in joining our Council should contact the Rush Chairman, Br. Adan Acevedo, by sending an email to HarvardKnights [at] gmail.com.

At events, candidates are encouraged to meet the Brothers, ask questions, and learn about the mission of the Knights of Columbus and our Council's work. Candidates should obtain and complete a Form-100 Membership Document, which will be available at all Council events, or upon request. Finally, all men seeking membership must attend the Exemplification of the First Degree on Sunday, Septmeber 18th, 2011.

Latin Mass for the Feast of the Annunciation

On the Feast of the Annunciation, March 25th, 2011, a Holy Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite was celebrated at St. Paul Catholic Church in Harvard Square. The Mass was co-sponsored by the Harvard Knights of Columbus and the Harvard Latin Mass Society.

According to the available information, this is the first Holy Mass in the usus antiquior at the high altar since the reform of the Roman Missal after Vatican II. Father Michael Drea, Pastor of St. Paul Parish and Senior Chaplain to the Harvard Catholic Chaplaincy, assisted in choir and deserves many thanks for his generous support of this project. St. Paul Catholic Church is the home of the Boston Archdiocesan Choir School and the Harvard Catholic Chaplaincy.
