The Filipino star put on yet another dominating performance Saturday night, knocking down Cotto twice and turning his face into a bloody mess before finally stopping him at 55 seconds of the 12th round.

Combining blazing speed and force from both hands, Pacquiao won his seventh title in seven weight classes and definitively sealed his reputation as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. The fight was billed as a 145-pound classic, and in the early rounds it didn’t disappoint. The two went after each other with a vengeance and Cotto more than held his own as they traded punches in the center of the ring.

Cotto’s face took a harsh beating so brutal; his face was covered in red from the raw fury of Pacquiao’s punches but refused to go down even as his corner tried to throw in the towel after the 11th round.

Pacquiao, coming off spectacular wins over Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, added another one to his legend against Cotto, who had lost only once and held the WBO version of the welterweight title. Pacquiao did it in his trademark fashion, throwing punches in flurries and from all angles until Cotto began to slow down and then pursuing him relentlessly until the fight finally ended.

This fight may have set the stage for a bigger blockbuster matchup against Floyd Mayweather Jr. as many in the sold out crowd at the MGM Grand Arena started chanting “We want Floyd! We want Floyd” after the fight was over.

These words from a certain Jay-Z song may have very well been echoed by Kobe Bryant and the Lakers Thursday night as they whipped the Phoenix Suns 121-102 in Los Angeles in a matchup between the Western Conference’s top 2 teams.

With their league-leading 112.3 points per game and blazing 8-1 start, the Suns were garnering a lot of buzz prior to tonight’s game. In case any of us forgot who #1 currently is though, the defending champion Lakers reminded all of us with a blowout victory.

Black Mamba had 29 points while Andrew Bynum did work on Amar’e Stoudemire with 26 points and 15 rebounds while holding Stoudemire to just 8 points on 2 of 15 shooting. The Suns were only able to shoot 36.5% for the night while the Lakers shot 57.6% from the field. Los Angeles did all of this without Pau Gasol who was out nursing a hamstring injury.

To keep things in perspective though, it’s only November and we’ve got a lot of basketball left to go in the season; so this game could either be a precursor of things to come or just a meaningless afterthought come playoff time. For now though, no one can argue that the Lakers run this.

It’s been almost a decade since we have heard the phrase made famous by John Sterling. The drought is over as the Yankees are the 2009 World Series Champions. Nine years since their last title, the New York Yankees can call themselves baseball’s best again.

In front of the home crowd in New York, Hideki Matsui tied a World Series record with 6 RBIs while Andy Pettitte got the win on short rest as the Yanks dethroned the defending champion Phillies with a 7-3 win in Game 6 on Wednesday night.

In a fitting coincidence, this championship came eight years to the day after the Yankees lost Game 7 of the 2001 World Series in Arizona on Luis Gonzalez’s broken-bat single off Mariano Rivera.

Desperate to regain the glory, New York spent over $1.6 billion over the last 8 years with no success until this year. Their expensive off-season signings paid off huge dividends as the $423.5 million trio of CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira and A.J. Burnett all played key roles for the Yankees this season in returning them to baseball’s grandest stage of them all.

Hideki Matsui, who was named World Series MVP; carried the Bronx Bombers all game with a 2-run home run in the 2nd inning, a 2-run single in the 3rd and a 2-run double in the 5th that basically wrapped up World Series Title #27 for New York.
