You don't have to tell me that I've been the WORST at posting this NYFW, I'm fully aware. I swear that as much as I love New York, it's this weird time eating vortex. Especially during Fashion Week. Which, is kind of ironic since Fashion Week is so busy that you don't get to eat. It's probably the most unhealthy week of life, ever. You're running around to shows all over the city, there's nowhere by the Lincoln Center that you can grab a quick bite to eat, there are parties every night, and you get little to no sleep (hence the sunnies).

Getting back to business. You can blame Niki for the fuzzy shot. <3

The Man Bag: Part 1

A friend of mine recently bought the most amazing peacoat. However, when he's busy jetting from meeting to meeting (with laptop and books in tow), having an old skater brand backpack doesn't cut it. So, he solicited my help (as he did with the coat) and I was happy to oblige. Not being an obvious expert in the field of man bags, I asked for some recommendations from some male blogger friends, and boy did they pull through.

Criteria:
a) cross body OR backpack
b) not too fashion-y (he's straight, so handbags are out of the question)
c) doesn't deviate too much from his personal style

However, while at the KnowShow, I saw some pretty amazing bags. One brand in particular, recommended to me by at least a couple male blogger friends, was there, and let's just say, it was love.

Element

Best known for being a skate brand, Element showed some great pieces at the KnowShow, illustrating their evolution. The brand had some great men's bags at the KnowShow. These 2 were my favourite - I love the denim of the backpack and the collegiate feel of the duffle.

Penfield

Penfield has been known for their outerwear - specifically their down-filled coats. Their products are made for the harsh demands of the New England climate and have been around since 1975. With nearly 40 years of industry experience, I would bet that Penfield's bags stand the test. Perfect for Vancouver's wet weather.

Herschel Supply Co.

My personal preference (and also as recommended to me). Herschel Supply is...Surprise!...local! That's right folks, these fine bags and wallets are based out of Vancity. The aesthetic of the products is simple, yet detailed. By picking from a brand that specializes, the selection is much broader - there are varying patterns, colours, and styles - so your biggest problem would be deciding which bag to get.

KnowShow

The KnowShow is Canada's premier lifestyle tradeshow. It primarily has snow, surf, skate, and street brands (Quiksilver, O'neill, Rip Curl), but has since started carrying more lifestyle brands like Native, Mavi, and Gentle Fawn. Attendees get to see what the brands have lined up for the coming seasons. But before you get all excited, tradeshows aren't for everyone. You can't purchase any of the items; they're strictly for your viewing pleasure.

This was my first time attending the KnowShow and I had a great time. I loved being able to browse through the brands and to learn more about the companies and their products. I really wish that more tradeshows would come to Vancouver. It would be a great way to further the industry and have people think and view things differently.

I'm all about scouting menswear at the moment (related post to come!), so I was naturally drawn towards those products. It also didn't hurt that most of the vendors had super cute guys working.

3.1 Phillip Lim Resort '12

Tangerine Tango did not only grace the runways of Isabel Marant and Tibi, it was also one of the dominant colours of the 3.1 Phillip Lim Resort collection, which I absolutely love. The palette of the entire collection is fantastic; the monochrome looks in both neutrals and colours are amazing, plus the combination of the two. I always love the relaxing and comforting feelings that Phillip Lim's designs evoke. Yet at the same time, they're extremely classy and simplistic, and also juxtapose the masculine and feminine well.

2012 Golden Globes

I generally find awards shows a bit of a snooze. I love the opening monologues and watching the red carpet...buuuuttt that's about it. While I love film, I would much rather just read about the winners the next day. I do however love skewering the celebrities and their fashion yay's and nay's.....by myself....out loud.....while stuffing my face full of carbs (homemade mac & cheese, if you're curious) and thinking "I really need to get back to yoga" (except I can't, which is a whole other story).

So because I know you're dying to know, the Haus of Hybrid's BEST and WORST of the 2012 Golden Globes.

(Sidebar: Did anyone else notice that there were a large number of underwhelming gowns? Neither best nor worst, but just, meh.)

I feel like the dress is just so overwhelming on her. It's a daring choice for her, but it doesn't work. I could see January Jones wearing this.

Emily Watson is on a show called Appropriate Adult (there's a joke there...somewhere). This dress is pretty much the exact colour of her skin.

I love this colour on Emma Stone. Sometimes when you're quite fair, black can be a bit stark on you. But this deep burgundy works for her. I love the shoulder pads, but I think the belt may be a bit strong.

Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace
On anyone else, this dress would be a snooze. But somehow Angelina can make an average dress look completely different. It fits amazingly and is neither black nor green! It's cream! Have we ever seen Angelina in a cream gown? It's almost pure.

Laura Dern in Andrew Gn
Love the colour (a little Angelia Jolie at the 2010 Globes, no?) and cut. I do not, however, love the hair. Charlie's Angels was cancelled, remember??

Michelle Williams in Jason Wu
Michelle Williams is just so cute all the time. Except last year when she wore that daisy dress thing. And I love me some Jason Wu. The print isn't overwhelming, and THIS is how you do a 3/4 sleeve (I'm talkin' to you, Poehler).

Nicole Kidman in Versace
Say what you want about her face, but this is the best Nicole Kidman has looked in awhile. In fact, this photo actually makes her face look good. The details on this dress take an otherwise boring gown and kick it up a few notches.

Nicole Richie in Julien MacDonald
This dress looked better on TV. But it's a great look for Nicole Richie. I'm totally digging the ponytail. Makes me wish my hair was long again. But then I'd wish for short hair again. #fashiongirlproblems

Tilda Swinton in Haider Ackerman
Pastels are so hot this season! I'm not always really into chiffon, but this dress (skirt?) paired with the satin jacket just work. And with Tilda's flawless skin? Into it. A variation on simplicity. I also REALLY want my hair to be like that.

Zooey Deschanel in custom Prada
Love this dress. Do not love her hair. Seems like Zooey and I have a similar body type (boyish), so I think this is a dress I could definitely pull off.

The Debate Continues

You've read "Do Vancouver Men Suck?", the rebuttal "Do Vancouver Women Suck?", and some of my thoughts on the subject.

So now what? Who emerges the victor? Sadly, no one.

Unless someone is searching deep within the satire, sarcasm, and bitchy-undertones (which, according to everyone's opinions, isn't possible because Yaletown women all say 'like' too often, and men only play video games) nothing is going to change.

Unless Vancouverites get over themselves, are able to have the emotional intelligence of their ACTUAL age (not the one they tell strangers), and be objective, things will remain the same. Women will have perma bitch-face, and men will still act like pre-adults. Sounds like a lose-lose to me.

So rather than sit around moaning about the sad state of dating in Vancouver, why don't you take a look at yourself and the image - the brand (because everything is about your personal brand) - you put out there, and be objective about it. If you were someone of the opposite sex (while thinking like the opposite sex!) would you want to date you, with your wrinkled clothes, bitch-face, video game claw hand, and UGGs? We weren't named the 3rd worst dressed city in the world for nothing.

So Vancouver singles and not-so-singles, if you want change, start with yourself - not the date you'd like to have.

What Were They Thinking?

If you've been reading my blog for awhile, you'll remember that I used to do a weekly series called "WTF? and Whine Wednesday" where I'd, well, rant about something. The reason I stopped it is because, well, it turned into exactly that, random ranting. However, with this new approach, I'm hoping to keep it light, and most importantly, funny.

Now the first instalment of WWTT? isn't something new. They've been around for about a season now, but it wasn't until I saw them on sale at Net-a-Porter that I really looked at them.

Prada FW11

The blue and black pair aren't horrible, but the red and beige ones are absolutely frightening. They creep me out and almost give me nightmares. Especially the baggy leg shaft..imagine a person having extra skin hanging off them.

Vancouver Dating

Chances are that if you’re from Vancouver then you’ve read Vancouver Magazine’s recent article “Do Vancouver Men Suck?”". (If you haven’t read it, or aren’t from Vancouver, then go read it.) And even if you don’t think that the article is relevant to you since you’re not actually from Vancity, read it anyway and weigh in!

After gathering some opinions from Twitter & Facebook, there are 2 clear camps – the men vs. the women. Both think the other is at fault, and I’m here to bring the 2 sides together and try to make you see that it's not that black and white.

The dating scene in Vancouver is dull, to say the least. In summer, dating is easy (but extremely cliché): take a walk on the Seawall, grab some gelato and watch the sunset in English Bay, or find a patio and throw back a few drinks. But winter? How many movies can you see, and how many restaurants can you go to where it’s so loud that you can’t have decent conversation? Vancouver does lack nightlife for the older (late 20s+) crowd. There are no chic lounges for dancing or places where you can grab a few drinks without massive crowds and screaming across the table. The Vancouver nightlife industry doesn’t seem to understand that there comes a time in your life when getting loser drunk and having to worry about drunk girls stepping, falling, or puking on your new Brian Atwood’s isn’t cool. And thusly, my first point: the Vancouver nightlife scene does not facilitate much beyond that random you hooked up with last weekend. (And also, stop being a cliché.)

That said however, Men, what is it with your inability to dress yourself like an adult? I get it; jeans and a t-shirt are comfortable. Great. I’m down for comfort. But, did you know that there’s a way to wear jeans a t-shirt that doesn’t make you look like a) an IT guy, b) Seth Rogan from Knocked Up, c) a 20 year-old college student who can only afford to eat Mr. Noodles, d) like you just don’t care? Dressing well doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg, just take your girlfriend, best girl friend, co-worker, or best gay to the nearest H&M, Club Monaco, Holt Renfrew, or local boutique. Don’t bring along the guy you spent all night playing WoW with last night on your xbox. I’m not saying you need to be a style icon, just make it look like you care. Why? Because what women see is, “Oh, he looks like a slob”, or “He looks like he doesn’t care”, and to us that means that he isn’t going to put forth the effort in the relationship (or worse, in the bedroom). And for the record, it has nothing to do with the so-called “hipster” culture (as was mentioned while gathering opinions), it has to do with effort. Effort = good. So before you spend $70 on the new hot game (that once you beat, you won’t play again), think about spending that $70 elsewhere, like on a nice shirt.

Women! You’re at fault too. I can admit that a significant number of Vancouver women walk around with permanent bitch-face when they’re out. Hell, sometimes I’m guilty of it. But at the same time, where did the bitch-face come from? Maybe it’s because they’re jaded from the dating scene after dating a bunch of lemons? Those women are allowed a night out too. So women, unless you’re botoxed and restylaned up, get rid of the bitch-face and hopefully good things will happen.

In a similar vein…

"Vancouver men are a little babyish," she explains. "You really have to hold their hands during the whole dating thing, telling them that was a really nice date, coaching them through the process. I have to be very careful with my body language to make it clear that I am not going to reject them." Now she dates much more often but wishes she didn't have to take all the initiative. She wonders, Will he pay? Should I pay? Will he pick me up? "There's not a lot of guidance from the guy." So she takes charge. "But sometimes I just want to go on a date-date."

This is me (not actually).

I am a strong woman. I have a strong personality. I know what I want and I cut to the chase. I come off as aggressive. I want to date someone who isn’t intimidated by me, who is willing to take charge and act like a man (but not in an Ed Hardy wearing douche kind of way). You would be surprised at the difficulty of this.

My last boyfriend never put forth any effort to make plans. If I didn’t make suggestions or plans, then weekends were spent at home with me on my laptop and him watching something utterly inane on TV. He said later that he did that because he “thought I liked making the plans”. That is a cop out. It is a lazy excuse for failing to put forth effort, take charge, and be decisive. It is a failure to be an active participant in a relationship.

Perhaps women are at fault for having such high expectations. Perhaps it’s our society’s fault for pushing women to be equals to men, and thus intimidating them. Or is it men who are at fault for accepting the status quo, rather than blazing a trail?

All I know is that I am far too quality to be in a relationship where my partner is not an active participant. I am far too quality to not expect to be treated well. And I am certainly far too quality for you to ask me out on Facebook (Fun Fact: that’s happened at least 3 times). Oh, and I’m also far too quality to dumb myself down, so I hope you brought your Thesaurus.

The problem, as women, is that we have accepted this behaviour and complacency for far too long that the old school values of chivalry, courting, and courtesy (for the most part - AKA from my experience) have fallen to the wayside. And because of this, when a guy approaches us at a bar/restaurant, we get all bitchy to them (so not cool). Don’t be a cow, be polite. Unless he gets creepy or angry (guys, that’s not cool either)...

Am I totally out of line when I want an attractive guy, with a decent job, who can dress well, is educated, treats me well, and has a sense of humour?

Things I Need in My Life: A.L.C's Resort 2012 Collection

While scouring the archives at style.com for content for some upcoming (and painfully laborious) posts, I came across images from A.L.C's Resort 2012 collection. And, well, I need it in my life. But probably not as much as I need some decent weather to wear it in (holla Raincouver!). As much as I love me some spikes, studs (not men...but them too), arm and neck parties, and tranny heels, I also love minimalism. While the collection is extremely simple, the tailoring, structure, and flow of the fabrics stand out, so there is no need for excessive details.

Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2012.

With 2011 officially over, I (obviously) can't help but reflect on the past year. There are some things, some relationships, that have become so much a part of who I am, that it's hard to believe that they've only been around (barely) a year. I often find myself rather nostalgic, reflective, and thankful at the start of a new year, in the twilight of what's transpired and the hope of what's to come.

Despite some down moments in 2011, such as ending a long-term relationship, the year was fairly good to me. For a few days, my Facebook feed was full of people ecstatic to put 2011 behind them because it was "the worst year of their lives". Such statements caused me to look back at the past year and be thankful that my life (or year) was not that (melo)dramatic.

I was very fortunate in 2011 to work on projects I feel strongly about and have the experiences I did. I learned a lot from these experiences and from so many people who continue to challenge and inspire me on a daily basis. My network expanded exponentially, old friendships were revived, and current friendships solidified. I revisited 3 places that I love so much (London, Florence, New York), once again proving to me that travel is an invaluable part of life. I took risks and put myself out there (such as attending TBEX'11, TEDxSFU, and a ShopCatch event all solo), showing me not only that it's important to be comfortable with yourself enough to do that, but also that no matter what, you need to take these risks to further yourself. New shoes were bought and new fashion risks were taken - Fashion Week was a crazy but invaluable experience.

And you, my faithful readers, may not know this, but part of the reason I keep this up is for you. I know I preach that you need to blog for yourself - and you do! - but the challenge of continually creating new content is something I enjoy. Yes, blogging is a lot of work, but I enjoy the challenge of it. So, while we may not know each other in person, I am fortunate that you challenged me in 2011 to be better. And for that, I thank you.

I hope that I will be able to bring you more diverse content in 2012, better photos, and more fun. Please stick around for the ride, because 2012 is going to be a good year.

I know that you're dying to know what I wore to the House Guest media event a couple weeks ago.

Not the best quality photos, but that's what happens when you take photos in the middle of an Open Bar event.

This was the first time I'd broken out the sequin jacket in Vancouver (and since NYFW!) and it was such a hit (as I knew it would be)! Although, I had a date afterwards and I excitedly asked him, "Do you like my sequins?!" He said something to the effect of, "Uh...they're...special. And sequin-y....." I replied with, "It's OK, I have a change of clothes to go out in." (Because sometimes straight guys just don't get it and get scared. And sometimes, you just shouldn't wear an awesome sequin jacket to a concert at the Commodore, no matter how awesome the sequin jacket is. Lesson: Be Prepared.)

the lip slip

Last week I told you about the new lip scrub i bought from Beauty Mark and mentioned that I really wanted to try Sara Happ's the lip slip.

One of my favourite things about Sara Happ's line is that the packaging is just so precious. I love the little boxes and ribbons. You can't really see it in this photo, but the box is a beautiful metallic pink colour...kind of the same as the Alexander Wang Fabiana.

As for the lip balm itself...it is glorious. It's thick and silky (though a little bit sticky). I don't need to apply it often (it stays on my lips forever!) and it doesn't smell or taste bad. It is extremely hydrating and I don't have that itchy lip balm addict feeling I get from other products (this is apparently due to the use of camphor in other similar products).

So all in all, I'm definitely hooked on Sara Happ.
