Last week I went to a presentation by Roopal Pattel - the senior women's accessory editor for Neiman Marcus. It was enlightening to hear the trends that she sees, after spending
much time in fashion hubs all over the world. What are the trends you ask? Burgundy, wine, bordeaux for starters. And color-blocking. Nude shoes are the new black, and glittery shoes for anytime. Dressing all in one color, feminine purses, and bold gold jewelery. But most importantly - shades of burgundy will carry through from fall to winter and all the way to spring. That's a relief - you won't have to swap colors out in your closet for quite a while!

Catch phrase? Bohemian luxury. Where have you heard that before?

They can take away my bread, my donuts, my naan, wontons, fettuccine and my Eggos - but they can't take away my tea!

I am an avid tea drinker (mostly because coffee just really upsets the system) and this weekend was tea tasting heaven. Every October in Seattle is the NW Tea Festival. There are all different types of tea offered - Chinese, Japanese, Indian, British, Taiwanese, herbal and probably a few more that I missed. For a small donation, I received a tasting up and a shopping bag. Each booth served several different types of tea, some ordinary adn expected, others that caught me by surprise.

I have to giggle when my daughter (9) walks up with her cup and she is only offered herbal tea. She explains that she would like to taste the Genmaicha or the Pu-erh or the Oolong and the server gives me the look of "kids-dont-like-this-tea-and-it-contains-caffeine". Quite honestly, Sarah's favorite tea is a toss up between Genmaicha and Pu-erh. A close second is peppermint, but only if is sweetened or flavored. Yes, I am a responsible parent (or at least I try to be). I will not let her drink a mug of full-strength Pu-erh, but I will let her have a tasting cup or two full. (Tasting cups only hold an ounce or two of liquid).

After tasting several teas, and consulting with the boss, we decided to spend our tea allowance on:

By far my favorite merchant is Phoenix Tea Shop. I have known Brett for a long time, but haven't seen him for about a year now. He still remembers exactly what type of tea I like - and he treats Sarah with respect (she is always offered Oolong, Pu-erh, etc. along with all of the adults). Brett also carries some of the highest quality teas around.

Sarah's favorite merchant is the Tea Lady. I'm not sure what attracts her to this shop every year. It might be the tea wares (there's always a touch of whimsy on hand), or the large assortment of interesting blends (that's where we bought the Peppermint Chocolate), or because the ladies who work there are always friendly.

I have to give a shout-out to SA Tea and Choice Teas. SA Tea makes the best Genmaicha in my opinion. I buy it at our local Uwajimaya, so we didn't purchase any at the festival like we normallly do. Choice Tea had a very nice Lemon, Lavender, Mint that we both tasted. I did not buy any at the festival since I know it is easy to come by at our grocery store.

The Cooper Mini was designed in collaboration with Rolls Royce (that explains alot) and there were only 1,000 made. So you better act soon - it went on sale in the UK in June 2011.

I'm sorry, but I can't help think of the Barenaked Ladies "Brian Wilson" song every time I see a picture of Brian Wilson. Although he doesn't look too depressed in this photo. The goat must've cheered him up. It almost looks like they are communicating to each other. Don't you agree? Maybe it was his falsetto voice. I think they made a real connection, I meanlook at the photo below:

For all of you gluten-free chow hounds in the Seattle area, you must know about Wheatless in Seattle by now. If it wasn't for them, the whole idea of fresh baked goods would put me off the wheatless lifestyle and back into Top Pot Donuts. Alas though, I have a bakery I can run to in my moment of desperation. They make all kinds of delectables as donuts, scones, fudge cake, chocolate chip cookies, lemon bars, deep dish cobbler,... need I say more? Ok, here's more - bagels, baguettes, pizza crust, and sundried tomato & roasted garlic bread.

Yes, you heard me right - sundried tomato & roasted garlic bread that is wheat free. It is eat-the-whole-loaf good, especially when sliced thin toasted like crostini.

Wheatless in Seattle is in my opinion by far the best gluten-free bakery in Seattle. PCC carries their baked goods (often in the refrigerated section). Razzi's uses their pizza crust. Uneeda Burger and Lunchbox Laboratory use their hamburger buns. And apparently you will be able to find their GF breads and pastries at the American Girl Bistro and Seattle Art Institute! There is a list of other restaurants that carry their products, you can find that here.

Crafty Business: Do 5 Things at Once

If you are a work-at-home entrepeneur Mom, you know you have to multi-task to make it happen. Here's a list of how I operate. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to do it any
other way...

1) Make yourself something to eat & drink - you are going to need energy to do this all at once, plus you want to stay hydrated. Ideally this will be something you can eat/drink while you are doing your other tasks, so think finger food (not spaghetti or soup)!

2) Start a project where you will have time to kill while waiting for something to dry, bake, wash, etc.

3) Listen to a podcast, interview, or call someone on speaker phone

4) Open 2 windows on your computer - 1 for doing something productive (listing on etsy?) and 1 for email/chatting/tweeting

5) Keep a notepad in front of you to jot down a list all the things that you should be doing instead of emailing/chatting/tweeting - or a list of ideas of things to blog about.... Undoubtedly these ideas will come to mind while you are doing all of the above.

And - if you want to be an "over-achiever" - you can answer questions from you kids / spouse at the same time. I don't recommend this however. I think the human brain is programmed to do no more than 5 things at once and given the spacetime continuum, physics is against you. If you throw in the sixth, it is at your own risk. There is the potential of your head overheating, or worse, exploding. Keep extra-strength Tylenol and chocolate close at hand - just in case (and perhaps forego the hydrating fluid in #1, substituting a venti mocha with whip instead).

The Farnsworth Art Museum is a nationally recognized gallery with over 10,000 pieces of American art - and over a dozen reclaimed cashmere scarves. Oh wait, those are in the GIFT SHOP so I guess that doesn't count towards the inventory of the museum...

Look What's New: Fringed Scarves

The fringed scarves are forever evolving. I never know what they will turn out to look like - it's always a surprise. The yarn that is used to make the fringe is frogged (or unraveled) from the scraps I have left over after I make my basic colorblock scarves. I then wrap the yarn around a "fringe-maker" (I have 3 different widths). The variety comes from wrapping different yarns at the same time - varying the colors, the thickness of yarn, and the curliness. It's like fireworks - without the boom or fire - just the "aaaahhhh!" factor!

I've just noticed there seems to be a trend in professional athletes named Cashmere...

There is Ray Cashmere of the Salford City Reds rugby team.

High scoring Cashmere Wright of the University of Cincinnati Bearcats basketball team.

The New York Giant's wide receiver Mario Manningham's middle name is Cashmere.

What do you think? Is it a new trend? Do you think we will be seeing Cashmere on the Top 10 Baby Names list in the near future? Probably not, but then with publicity it's getting in the sports world, who knows!

Buyer Beware: that pesky 100% Cashmere...acrylic

Sneaky. Put "acrylic" on a different line. I have to admit, I was fooled - until I washed the sweater. Acrylic is so obviously different from cashmere, especially when wet. It practically "squeaks" when you touch it. Seriously. Go grab an acrylic sweater and rub it between your thumb and finger. Feel it? Animal fibers won't do that.

Comedian Mark Malkoff says the Apple Store will let you get away with anything while shopping (like dancing and bringing pets in) - so he set up the Apple Store Challenge. He wanted to see if the employees of the Apple store in NYC would be cool with him bringing

his pet goat inside. Does this mean I'm going to start seeing people at restaurants with goats at the feet? Or, can you train a goat to be a "service animal"? Ok, maybe not - they like to climb too much. so that might be a bad thing.

If you live the GF lifestyle, you must admit - walking into a restaurant and being handed an ENTIRE MENU of GF options is a fantasy. Usually you get just a couple of options, and they are pretty lame - like a burger with no bun or fries, a salad with no croutons, or a plain chicken breast...

Well, welcome to fantasyland! Razzi's on Greenwood just north of 85th has an entire menu of GF options - appetizers (including a mezza plate w/ GF pita and cheese bread), salads, pastas, gyros, paninis, pizzas and desserts! And, to top it off, they have cow cheese, goat cheese, soy cheese, and Daiya cheese - something for everyone!

I think I've died and gone to heaven. What a treat.

Crafty Business: How to keep up and trump the "Joneses" with QR codes

So, as many of you know, I ♥ QR codes. I think they're brilliant. Probably because I have big fingers with callused tips (too many years of crafting) and I have a hard time typing accurately on my Android phone. Just point- click - and voila! I am at the pertinent website, contact info, calendar event, etc.

Well here is my new reason to love QR codes. It keeps me one step ahead of - or at least in line with - bigger companies that have mucho dinero to spend on SEO and marketing. Not only does it make me look like I'm keeping up with the times, but since I DIY, I can add my QR codes to all of my marketing materials at a moments notice.
