Getting eaten alive by mosquitoes or invaded by a swarm of ants or flies are among the fastest ways to break up your summer picnics, barbeques and outdoor gatherings. Unfortunately, they’re par for the course at this time of year.

Theories abound about natural and not-so-natural ways to keep bugs from interfering with your outdoor festivities, but which ones really work? Rather than making your friends and family act as guinea pigs at your next barbeque, why not read through what the research says first? This way you’ll be armed with an arsenal of safe and effective insect repellants to keep the bugs away while your family plays!

The Dangerously Effective Repellent You Should Avoid Like the Plague

Insect Repellents that contain DEET make up the lion share of the market. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), about one-third of the U.S. population uses DEET-containing products every year.

Their popularity is likely due to the fact that they do work very well at killing insects, but at what expense to your health? You should know that although the EPA maintains that “normal use of DEET does not present a health concern to the general population,” this chemical is a known neurotoxin.

Studies conducted at Duke University have found that using DEET frequently or for extended periods may damage your brain cells, resulting in:

• Memory loss
• Headache
• Weakness and fatigue
• Muscle and joint pain
• Tremors
• Shortness of breath

Further, the EPA has based their safety studies on brief exposures to DEET. They state, “Human exposure is expected to be brief, and long-term exposure is not expected.”

What, you may be wondering, then happens to the family that uses DEET over an extended period of time? Studies have shown that when used in high amounts, or for long periods of time, DEET is far from safe.

According to research by Mohamed Abou-Dania, a professor at Duke University, while lab rats had no reaction to DEET when it was used for 30 days, after 60 days their brain cells started to die. This chemical has also been shown to cause nervous-system damage, including:

• Insomnia
• Mood changes
• Disorientation and clumsiness when walking
• Seizures
• Coma
• Even death

Further, groundbreaking new research that came out last year revealed that DEET is, in fact, toxic to the central nervous system. Writing in the journal BMC Biology, the French researchers wrote, “We’ve found that deet is not simply a behavior-modifying chemical but also inhibits the activity of a key central nervous system enzyme, acetycholinesterase, in both insects and mammals.” They continue:

“Deet is commonly used in combination with insecticides and we show that deet has the capacity to strengthen the toxicity of carbamates, a class of insecticides known to block acetylcholinesterase.

These findings question the safety of deet, particularly in combination with other chemicals, and they highlight the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the development of safer insect repellents for use in public health.“

Also, as soon as you come inside and wash DEET from your skin and clothing (something the EPA recommends you do right away), that DEET gets washed down the drain, and as a result is now showing up in rivers, lakes and also your drinking water

Skin Cancer has reached epidemic proportions worldwide over the past several years.  Skin Cancer is the most common cancer of all – and some of it deadly.

The most common type, known as basal-cell carcinoma, numbers 800,000 annual cases.  The next most common type is squamous-cell carcinoma, with about 400,000 new cases a year.

Melanoma, a cancer that forms in the skin’s pigment cells, is the type that’s potentially deadly, killing about 8,000 Americans annually. It’s an equal-opportunity illness, with an estimated 34,950 cases diagnosed last year in men and an estimated 27,530 in women (National Institute for Health, April 2009).

Worse yet, the rate of melanoma, the most dangerous of skin cancers is doubling every 8 years.  In fact the lifetime chance of getting skin cancer is 1 in 5.  Using sunscreen  faithfully your whole life will cut your risks [of incurring skin cancer] dramatically.”

With the damaging effects of the sun illustrated by the medical profession and throughout the news, usage of sun screen has become a necessity. A culture once enamored with a golden tan is increasingly aware of not only premature aging of skin often associated with continuous sun exposure, but with the long-term danger of skin cancer as a result of unprotected exposure.

WASHINGTON, March 25 – The bodies of nearly all Americans are contaminated with a sunscreen chemical that has been linked to allergies, hormone disruption, and cell damage, according to a new study from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). A companion study from the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine found that the same chemical is linked to low birth weight in baby girls whose mothers are exposed during pregnancy.

The chemical, oxybenzone, is widely used in sunscreens. Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) analysis of ingredient labels found that nearly 600 sunscreens sold in the U.S. contain oxybenzone, including products by Hawaiian Tropic, Coppertone, and Banana Boat. Although oxybenzone is most common in sunscreen, companies also use the toxic chemical in at least 567 other personal care products, including lip balm, lipstick, moisturizers and fragrance for women.

Oxybenzone was last reviewed for safety in the 1970’s but since then significant new evidence has been published on its toxicity and pervasive exposure. A recent review by the European Union found insufficient data to determine whether oxybenzone in sunscreen is safe for consumers.

“These studies are the latest in a long list of reasons the Food and Drug Administration must thoroughly review the safety of all chemicals used in sunscreens Americans use every day,” said Rebecca Sutton, a scientist with EWG. “FDA must do what it promised 30 years ago: Enact permanent, enforceable federal safety standards for sunscreens so consumers can get the best and safest sun protection.”

EWG research shows that 84 percent of 910 name-brand sunscreen products offer inadequate protection from the sun, or contain ingredients, like oxybenzone, with significant safety concerns. These products are on the market because FDA has failed to finalize sunscreen safety standards that have been under development since 1979, but has instead issued a series of delays and revisions at the request of the personal care product industry. FDA issued a new draft of the standards last October under pressure from EWG, but continues to delay finalizing the standards at the behest of the regulated industry.
