Traveling in foreign countries is more fun when you are able to communicate freely with locals in their native language. You are able to learn more from trips abroad without the language barrier that most often limits the experience that can be derived from a place. But what is the easiest way of acquiring a working knowledge of a foreign language that can be put to good use in travel?

Educational language programs used on computers can be just like learn Thai in Bangkok. Foreign language software such as Rosetta Stone and Pimsleur provide interactive learning in a manner that is most convenient to the learner. Through combined use of text, video, and audio, learners are able to get a good grasp of the foreign language through integration of these three elements with the end purpose of gaining the ability to hold a conversation in the desired language.

Learning need not stop while on travel since learners can go back to previous lessons at any time. A traveler who intends to have a more lengthy stay in a foreign place can also consider an online course. The learning modules are typically provided in a pre-determined progression. Students can keep track of their lessons through emails.

If a traveler is on a serious quest to mastering a foreign language, nothing beats complete immersion even while in the process of learning. This can be made possible by enrolling in a professional language school. Interaction is not only limited to the best teacher but will include interacting with other students who are equally eager to learn. The key to truly mastering a language is using it as often as possible. Those who need frequent brushing-up on their lessons can always depend on their chosen computer foreign language software.

Everyone knows how gadgets such as laptops serve as magnets for thieves especially in travel. Traveling tends to deviate the attention of owners more than in familiar environments. These deviations are just what the thieves are waiting for to do their thing. Losing anything of value is one of the biggest spoilers of any trip.

The loss of a laptop while on a business trip speaks of untold inconvenience, lost opportunities, and risk of exposing trade secrets. The same loss during a leisure trip is not preferable as well because of the risk of divulging personal information as well as having no access to a very convenient gadget used for recording and communicating. Sometimes however, travelers invite laptop theft more than any other.

It is never a good idea to leave laptops unattended at any time. The inattention invites thieves to take greater interest seeing the particular laptop as an easier target more than others. It usually takes a mere amount of distraction to lose something permanently. The presence of a laptop should be unannounced if possible particularly in crowded places and when left in the vehicle.

At the very least, laptop owners should provide thieves a hard time if they are to put up a fight to preserve them. Otherwise, they might as well hand over their laptops themselves. It is also advantageous to install laptop recovery software to trace its whereabouts if actually lost.

The loss of a laptop is far serious than the loss of a bag because of the common practice of people nowadays to store their most important data electronically. A whole range of personal and business information can be contained in this portable gadget. The magnitude of the loss is not quantified by the physical loss but the contents found within.

Maintaining a travel blog can take its toll when you have nothing left to say about your trips, your adventures, and your experiences. If you feel that you’ve ran out of stories to tell especially after a considerable length of time in actually not travelling, you should consider the option of telling stories of other people. I am not referring to copying posts of others which is unthinkable for any writer worth his/her cent but in discovering worthy stories through simple interaction with people around you.

Everyone has an immediate circle of family and friends who are potential sources of good stories. By interviewing them or through casual talk, a writer can hear experiences about places he/she himself has not gone to. It is essentially telling the story of a place or destination in the eyes of another.

Telling a story from another’s point of view can be a refreshing break from the monotony of your own views. It is a fact that people sometimes have preconceived notions of people, places, and things that can affect their opinion. Having the opportunity to hear of what others think offers us a chance to reconsider what we have always thought to be infallible truths.

It goes without saying that your source should be informed beforehand of your intention to use the information on your blog, as a matter of courtesy. Even if the proposed content is essentially harmless by its very nature of being about travel experiences, you will still be using information which is not your own. Provide photographs must have express consent from owner.

A blog is a wonderful way of providing information to readers. Making posts need not stop when travel writers go home. Maybe it’s about time to talk about places nearer home.

Work and family obligations require most people to be constantly in touch even while traveling. Even with the possession of a top-of-the-line laptop, no substantial work can be done without proper Internet connectivity. This then renders bringing the laptop useless.

To ensure that the additional burden of carrying a laptop does not go to waste, travelers should do some research on the place of destination with regards to the availability of wireless connection. The initial point of information is usually the hotel or hostel wherein the travelers intend to stay. This makes sense since this is probably the place where laptops will be used most often away from home or work. It has to be made clear however whether Internet connectivity is provided through free wi-fi connection or through a business center paid by the hour. Wi-fi connection is also sometimes limited to a specific area in the hotel only which will make it impossible to have the convenience of staying in the room during laptop use.

Travelers who find themselves in such an inconvenient situation can look for an Ethernet jack on the room walls if they have their Ethernet cable on hand. With these two, wireless connection can be established. This option however will not always be available in all places of accommodation. Ethernet connection may require configuring the Internet protocol to the connection at one’s specific location.

Many travel guidebooks already include information about connectivity options since most travelers are understandably concerned with its availability. Before leaving, laptops should be made Internet-ready primarily by checking if the wireless card and Ethernet jack are properly functioning. An external attachment known as the WLAN hardware that makes it possible to create one’s own wireless signal can be brought along just in case it is necessary to use it. A laptop can provide the most flexibility when traveling with documents and other important files contained in it but sometimes it is only as good as the connection it can access.

With the great reluctance of people to part from their laptops, I could almost swear that it has become one of the basic needs of man like food, clothing, and shelter. We see those conspicuous black shoulder bags lugged on by travelers everywhere. It wouldn’t be so weird if the purpose is work-related since there will be no question of bringing the laptop but as to why holiday travelers would prefer to bring theirs is beyond me.

And so they say they need to stay connected to their workplace even when on vacation. They also say they need to upload pictures, browse the Internet, and so on and so forth. The reasons are endless. I wonder why they had to leave in the first place.

Bringing work on family vacations is unfair to the family who has waited long for the opportunity to bond. Minimal communication requirements can easily be addressed by smaller gadgets such as phones. Card images for pictures taken by digital cameras can be transferred to a CD while sending the same pictures through email can easily be done through an Internet cafe. In other words, there are other ways of doing what you need to do with a laptop especially if it would be only for a limited period of time such as a vacation or holiday.

Bringing an expensive equipment like a laptop along while traveling is just too much responsibility and distraction to truly enjoy a leisure trip. It will always be a security concern whether it is left in the room or brought along in sight-seeing. More than the cost of the equipment itself, losing the important data it contains represents a higher threat when it finds its way to unscrupulous criminals. Give yourself a break and travel without your laptop once in a while, I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt that much.

Having always been a traditional person, I did not jump at the first opportunity to use it. I tried to use the same reasoning I used against desktop computers but found myself unable to resist as strongly as I used to when confronted with a new gadget. I believe that the old ways will always have its reason and its charm and that the new ways will somehow destroy it. When old meets new, conflicts are bound to arise, or so I thought.

This was different. It offered portability, convenience, and accesibility at any given time and place. It is not as imposing and disturbing as its bigger counterparts. It is able to blend in with the scene so well that I could probably imagine a well-renowned novelist holding it instead of a paper and pen and not be disturbed by it at all. It probably gave the most liberating feeling that any writer can ever hope for in a writing implement.

I will not pretend not to enjoy the advantages of using a laptop and intend to use one until something better comes along. I have not totally given up with my paper and pen since using them still brings me the joy that has become very familiar to me. Writing with my laptop however is a joy that I haven’t finished discovering yet.

How will two identical laptops fare in the hands of a child from a highly-developed country and a child from a developing country? For the purpose of easier comparison, let us all think for a while in the line of the advantages associated with the privileged and the limitations related to the less-privileged. A laptop in the hands of a child from the US or UK is probably a necessity in studying. Almost every child of school-age will have one or at least have easy access to one. On the other side of the world particularly in countries like Cambodia or Ethiopia, a laptop is a luxury, falling behind a long list of more pressing necessities such as food, shelter, and clothing.

Given this reality, all children regardless of status in life would want to have equal access to the opportunities presented by technology and whatever advancement it brings. This would probably explain the pictures of joy as seen on the recipients’ faces after receiving their own laptop through the highly-controversial “One Laptop Per Child” or OLPC initiative. After having to share one textbook with at least five other kids in class, is it at all surprising to feel such amazement in having a technological gadget which one can call his/her own?

Children who have automatic access to equipments such as a laptop are not only lucky because of their availability but also because of the prevailing physical convenience around them and the level of support available to them to maximize its use. The same cannot be said for the recipients of the free laptop in a third world country who obviously do not have the capacity and the ability to maximize the use of what they got. Unless a government agency or a non-government organization makes sure that the recipients and the teachers have been properly supported by funding and training, we can be pretty sure that the laptop will just go back straight to the box, never to serve its purpose of education.

Such wasted money for the purchasing country, such wasted learning opportunity for the child.

If you are anything like me, then your laptop is your lifeline. I work on my laptop, attend school on my laptop, keep up with my socializing on my laptop . . . and, overall, use my laptop to manage my life. I don’t know what I would do if something were to happen to my laptop. Therefore, when I travel with my laptop I take extra special precautions to ensure its safety. I will share with you what I know, so that you can protect your precious friend, too. Here are five tips for protecting your laptop while traveling:

Electrical protection. You may not know that you’ll have a stable or reliable electrical current where you are going, so it’s always a good idea to carry a voltage converter and a surge protector that is compatible with your plug adapter.

Insurance. Your laptop should be covered by your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy. Before you travel anywhere, make sure your insurance policy covers your laptop so that, in the case that the worst does happen and your precautionary measures come up short, you can feel safe in knowing that you will be able to replace your laptop or have it repaired.

Data protection. Make sure you back up your hard drive before and during your travels. You never know what might happen while you are in a travel whirlwind, and an integral part of protecting your laptop is protecting the data that is stored on it. If you have a primary computer at home that you can run remotely, it is a good idea to keep your main computer running while you are traveling, so that you can easily backup your laptop data to your home base as you go.

Physical protection. There is no substitute for a good laptop case. Protect your laptop from scratches and falls by keeping it in a heavy-duty case made just for traveling.

Protection from theft. Never, never, never let your laptop out of your sight while traveling. Make sure it is the last item you put on the conveyor belt when you check in at airports, and if you must leave your laptop in a hotel room while you go out, keep it in the room’s safe.

These days, it’s almost inconceivable to travel without your good friend, laptop. However, it’s also really scary to think of something happening to your laptop during your travels. Take these safety precautions and set your mind at ease that your laptop is protected in a multitude of ways while you travel.

The life of a travel writer is one shrouded in mystery, and is often a source of daydreams and fantasies for some people who love to travel, but committed to the daily grind. Of course, being a travel writer takes some work and discipline (after all, it is a career), but overall, it is hard to say that there are any real drawbacks to being a travel writer. If you need some convincing, here are some benefits of becoming a travel writer:

You obviously get to travel. Perhaps the best, most awesome thing about being a travel writer is also the most obvious: you can get paid to do what you love doing How many people can say that? What’s more (and just as obvious) is that you get to see the world. Depending on the purpose of your writing, you may even get to travel free of charge, so you won’t have to worry about taking out a payday advance online loan to pay your bills at home so that you can get to your next job destination.

Hotel and accommodation perks. In addition to the obvious perks of being a travel writer (which I’ve already mentioned), there are certain perks that you might not have thought of. For one, when hotels, motels, resorts, etc. know that you will be staying at their accommodations and possibly writing about them, they are likely to throw in some extras that you might not get if you were just an average guest. Be sure to casually (or not so casually) mention the purpose of your stay the next time you check in to a travel destination where you will be writing, and see if you can wrangle some room service, a free massage, private transportation, or tickets to a local show out of the deal.

Freedom to explore. Not only will you experience the feeling of freedom that comes with adventure and new discoveries, but you will also have the freedom of choosing your work schedule, as well as your assignments. Basically, as a travel writer you are your own boss and you call the shots as to how, where, and when you want to work.

Opportunity for growth. No matter where you start out as a travel writer, the sky is the limit when it comes to how far you can go – both literally and figuratively. The career of a travel writer will grow with you, offering you increasingly broad and exciting opportunities as you gain experience. Imagine starting off writing about charming hangouts in the small town you live in, and moving onward and upward to fly to world- exotic vacation destinations and write about world-famous attractions.

If you are a travel writer who runs a niche blog, then you’ll be happy to know that you can increase your blog’s monetization by finding sponsors for your travel blog. Sponsors are third-party entities who pay you money to allow them into your blog in some form or another. For example, you may have sponsors who display advertising on your blog, or who ask you to write blog posts supporting their products or services – usually both. Blog sponsorship is a great way to fund your travels and put a little cash in your pocket, and all you have to do is partner up with them and do what you love to do the most: travel and write. So, how do you go about getting blog sponsorships? Here are some pointers for how to find sponsors for your travel blog:

Be prepared to provide quality. If you want to find sponsors that are interested in your blog, you must be able to prove that your blog is worth sponsoring. Basically, what’s in it for them? Travel blog or not, if you don’t have a quality blog and a good, strong readership, then that’s where you need to start. Once you can prove to potential sponsors that they will make more sales if they sponsor your blog, you are ready to find sponsors.

Choose your targets wisely. What type of travel writing do you do? Where do you go? Is your writing formal and encyclopedic, or is it more off the beaten path, so to speak? You need to have a clear idea of exactly which types of sponsors would be a best fit for your travel blog – and vice versa – so that you can avoid wasting your time and their money. Basically, it wouldn’t make any sense for you to approach a popular Texas hotel for a sponsorship if your blog is about backpacking in Europe.

Size up the competition. That’s right – one of the best ways for you to find sponsors for your blog is to check out the other travel blogs that are most like yours and see who is sponsoring theirs. Chances are, if the blog sponsorship is successful, that same sponsor will be open to sponsoring similar blogs.

Be creative. Search online for businesses and websites that are related to your travel blog’s niche. Make a list of possible sponsors to approach, then create a customized query for each one, referring back to material that may interest them on your blog.
