I once was pushed in without holding my nose and got water up in it and was coughing and choking. Since then, I have not been able to jump feet first into water without holding my nose. On the other hand, I can dive like a normal person."

Similarly, I can't jump into water for the first time without holding my nose. You are not alone, although I have no explanation.
