Why does one attend a MUSIC CONCERT if what they really want to do is talk? That’s the question I was wondering while attempting to listen to Bradford Cox’s mish-mash of covers and assumedly improv sounds on this particular Friday in March. I’m sure he was wondering this as well, as he posed more or less the same question to the audience when he realized he couldn’t really even hear himself in the monitors. Once they cranked up the volume the talkers were silenced, at least from where I was, in front with the rest of those mentally present to LISTEN to music.

Atlas Sound opened with a cover of Bob Dylan’s “All the Tired Horses in the Sun”, the first of a few covers for the night. My personal favorite was when he sang “Can you provide what I need?” on an unfamiliar song, just before going straight into Pavement’s “We Dance”. Whereas these songs were just Bradford on the electric guitar, he later looped a guitar riff and then sat down, beating out the rhythm with maracas on a drum kit while singing “I’m not terrified”… of death, maybe?. Bradford said he was trying a new “folk sound”, which with his particular guitar tone reminded me of older Chan Marshall (Cat Power) at times. To close out the set, Bradford ruminated about getting older while singing “No One Wants to Die Alone”, a song fitting for Moon Pix-era Chan.

One thing I noticed while reviewing my photos was the sheer number of shots with Bradford’s eyes rolling back in his head, showing only the whites of his eyes. Perhaps he was rolling his eyes at the rude members of the audience, hoping one day they would shut up? Actually, I believe this is evidence of his loss of self while reaching a sort of catharsis in playing music. It is that moment when playing music that the gap closes between what is inside you coming forth, and what is heard. When this unison is reached, the musician encounters one of the most pure forms of bliss: a soul-drenching, uplifting experience which hardly can be matched. As any musician who has experienced this first-hand can attest, this is when the most beautiful moments occur, for themselves as well as anyone lucky enough to be present.

Bradford, we’re waiting for a live session with you here at our studio in the Old Fourth Ward, be it Atlas Sound or Deerhunter, or preferably both. Because we release everything for free, you can do as many covers as you want. We have always been big supporters of Atlanta music and would love to have two of our favorite bands in. Contact us! Oh, and for anyone who missed Deerhunter with Black Lips at 529, I’m really, really sorry.

A rigid motorcycle ride, down the unkempt sprawl of Atlanta, full of three Red Bulls, brought me to the sunny day record store show at Criminal Records, now in the center of Little Five Points. But if you’re like me, and you wheeled down the strip, you would have had the chance for a fifteen-dollar certificate for Vortex. I cruised around the block in a “T-Sizzle,” as my driver so aptly dubbed the model of a Scion I would never purchase. A short drift around the block later, I found myself indulging in the oral orgasm of a free Vortex burger and beer. I was only one beer into the event, when I found myself strolling into conversations with the high-spirited public of Little Five.

The outgoing atmosphere became increasingly intriguing. It could have been the recent regime change, or the sunny weather, or just that there was an event with free booze, that kept our minds off the recession. It definitely wasn’t the annual onslaught of Georgia pollen. So after making love to that beefy wonder, I settled down for a post-coital cigarette around the outdoor stage, to drown in the sound of Book of Colors. If you came early enough, you saw this lyrically driven, Shins-esque band, which put on some impressive melody with the help of their electric violinist. I stuck around outside to find that the following gang of politically charged, and slightly obnoxious, artists named The Preachers drove most listeners inside for something redeeming. The most astute observation overheard: “This band sucks ass.” belted Carla, the staggering one-eyed homeless woman.

I lost my will to stand near, but I became intertwined in the crowd, namely, a traveling hippie named Ether. If you could get past the smell, and his buddy who made every attempt to kiss your face, then you’d come across an articulate unconventional artist. Ether doesn’t pay for food, he doesn’t pay for travel and he definitely doesn’t pay for respect. He’s a traveling photographer who jumps trains, and eats of out trash cans. He lives the American dream of living absolutely free in every aspect of life, down to his shoelaces. He says: “if you’ve got a rug, then you’ve got too much.” And his photography is good, surprisingly good. He’s taken pictures in all but 9 states and seen more of America than we see on television. Most of us believe in a life free from want or materialism, while Ether breathes that belief.

Before my desire for beer and music became too strong, I gave him 10 bucks for a picture of the Brooklyn Bridge from a neighborhood where I once lived. He was ecstatic. Walking away, slightly enlightened by strange ideals, I immersed myself in the best act that was missed by most, Judi Chicago. The tired, drunk, and determined stuck around for Judi Chicago’s heavily electronic dance show. The guys resembled a post-punk look, with the sound of David Bowie on crack, and they secretly stole the show. Even the most reserved Indie rockers grooved in a weird ironic dance, and with more boisterous energy than they did when most bands came on. You could even see a clown juggling luminescent balls, that is, if I didn’t hallucinate such a thing. With the friendly folks, free burgers, and plenty of PBR, every hipster, punk, and hippie freeloader in the mess strolled out of Criminal Records, and forgot about their little worries, for a little while. And if you run into Ether in some random city, buy him a beer and hear a story, just stay away from his face licking pal, you might end up with a soggy ear.

We came together with some of our closest friends for our first anniversary at Fishmarket in Atlanta. Needless to say to anyone who can actually remember the night, it was a huge success. Thanks a lot to today the moon, Baron Von Saturday, DJ Black Dominoes, ‘Lil Ray, the film crew, Fishmarket, and everyone else who helped throw this together. Oh, and if you’ve never been on a trapeze, I highly recommend it!

Typically we only include music related live events in this section, but we’re suckers for those Atlanta do-gooders, anything Italian, and benefits (we’re throwing a very special one soon). Riccardo Ullio is putting on a dine out for earthquake relief at his restaurants. Go have a good night out for once guys. Our recessions certainly isn’t as big has some of the recessed craters that destroyed the lives of countless Italians.

With that guilt trip out of the way, here’s what Riccardo had to say about it:

On Monday, April 6, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake devastated the Abruzzo region of Italy. At least 260 people lost their lives and more than 28,000 people have been left homeless by the disaster.

Please join us in the effort to raise funds for the people affected by the earthquake. On Tuesday, April 21st U Restaurants will host the Dine Out for Earthquake Relief.

All profits from dinner at Sotto Sotto, Fritti, Cuerno and Beleza will go to provide relief for the victims through the International Red Cross.

In order to raise additional funds, U Restaurants will hold a raffle featuring an array of great prizes, worth over $4500, from U Restaurants and other local retailers. Raffle tickets can be purchased at all U Restaurants.
