PIIANAIA GENEALOGY COMPARED WITH QUEEN'S

No. 20

Like the Kalawainui genealogy, the Piianaia genealogy starts with the medieval chiefs of the Big Island who were prominant in their days of King Umi-a-liloa. These chiefs included the sons and daughters of Umi ; the Kanaloa and Mahi chiefs of Kohala and the I family of Hilo.

Their lineage follows the line of the royal family through the 17th century, when Keawe II, the King of Hawaii, had a son Kalanikeaaumoku by his wife Kalanikauleleiaiwi. The son was a half brother of the Kalaninuiamamao of the Kalawaianui pedigree.

MODERN LINEAGE

Kalanikeaaumoku (k) ia Kamakaimoku (w) of the House of I and had Keoua Kalanikupuapai (k) who died in 1752.

Keoua ia Kekuiapoiwa (w) and had two sons, Kamehameha and Kalanimailokuloku-i-Kepookalani, who was later known as Keliimaikai, the good chief.

Keliimaikai (k) ia Kalikookalani (w) and had Kaoanaeha (w) the wife of John Young. He later married Nunehiwaokalani (w) and had a son Piianaia.

Piianaia (k) ia Kina or Kekuapuoikamai (w) and had two daughters, Kalilioku II, and Ulualoha I.

Piianaia (k) also ia Keakaokalani (w) and had Kupaai (k), Kalilioku I (w) and Kikiakoi (k). Their descendants are not enumerated.

Ulualoha, daughter of Piianaia and Kina, had no children.

Kalilioku II, daughter of Piianaia and Kina, and married Akuna and had Ulualoha II (w), Abraham St. Chad, Alania (w), Kikiakoi Keliihooluhi (k), Kikiakoi II (k), and Kamoonohu (w).

COUSINS

Ulualoha II (w) was married twice. Her first husband was Liwai Isaac Kaiama by whom she had Ponilani (w), Nahaukapu (w), Leilehua (w) and Pua (k).

Ulualoha by Daniel Keliaa had a son Daniel and several others.

Alania (w) married Edward Wilcox and adopted several children.

Keliihooluhi, Kikiakoi and Kamoonohu left no children.

Abraham St. Chad Piianaia married Fanny Malulani Kahoalii and had the four children named in this story.

going back to the Liwai Kaiama family, Ponilani (w) married Kahalau and had a son Kahalau. Leilehua married Charles Makanui

The relationship between the Queen's famiy and the Piianaia's stems from Keliimaikai, the good chief.

This ends the story of the Hidden Alii and the Piianaia family.

Hidden Alii, No 19

In order to show the relationship of the Hidden Alii, Kalawainui Kaluhikai, and the family of Queen Emma, we shall recapitulate their genealogy and include the names of alii who were not mentioned in the story.

The chart starts with Keawe II, King of Hawaii, and his wife, Lonomaikanaka just like the Queen's.

Kalaninuiamamao (k) ia Ahia Kalanikumaikiekie (w), same as the Queen's.

Kekunuialaimoku (k) ia Kalaninuiokalani (w), Queen's ancestor.

Kalikookalani (w), Queen's ancestor, ia Kahoalii I (k), whose real name was Kalaninuikaleleau.

Kahoalii II (k) ia Moakeawe (w) and had two sons, Kalawaianui and Kauhola.

Kalawaianui (k) ia Nawai (w) had three children, Kaluhikai, the Hidden Alii, Wahineikaili (w) and a daughter Kaoanaeha, namesake of the Kaoanaeha who married John Young.

Kaluhikai, the Hidden Alii, ia Kalehua (w) of Waianae, and had Fanny Malulani Kahoalii, Maude Niaupio, Liliha and Alexander.

Wahineikaili had no children.

Kaoanaeha ia Aarona and had two sons, Alexander Liliha and C. Kauhola.

Fanny Malulani Kahoalii ia Abraham St. Chad Piianaia and had 1- Grace Kiowai Kamaikui, 2- Maude Niaupio, 3- Gordon Heulumanawaokalani, 4- Stella Kalikookalani.

COMMON ANCESTORS
A study of this genealogy shows the common ancestor of the Queen and the Piianaia family to be Kalikookalani (The Bud of Heaven). She was the mother of both of Kahoalii II and Kaoanaeha.

MRS. ANNE HALL
Kahaipu-o-keku-haupio-ike -kanaka, the man who told Queen Emma the story of the Hidden Alii was related to the Queen's family through Kahoalii I. Kalaniwahine, a sister of Kahoalii was the ancestor of Kauhaipu.

The story of the Hidden Alii had been forgotten by most modern Hawaiians and was only recently retold by Mrs. Anne Peleioholani Hall, granddaughter of Kauhaipuokekuhaupioikekanaka.

Mrs. Hall's story was confirmed when Abraham Piianaia produced the genealogical tables of his grandfather, Abraham St. Chad Piianaia.

Since the geneology of Queen Emma has not been published in recent years, many Hawaiians will welcome it. The Queen lived from 1836 to 1885.

Haole readers may as well skip this geneology. It will be Greek to them, but Hawaiians will want to get out their scissors and clip it for future reference.

The geneolgy is tabulated Hawaiian style. "Ia" is the Hawaiian word for marriage; (w) means, wahine, woman and (K) is Kane, man. The child of the parents always follows immediately after their names and the spouse is given on the same line with the child.

Keawe II (k). King of Hawaii about 1700, ia Lonomaikanaka (w).

Kalaninuiamamao (k) , heir to Keawe, ia Ahia (w) of the House of I.

Kekunaialaimoku (k) ia Kaneniuokalani (w).

Kalekookalani (k) ia Kealiimaik[a]i (k), brother of Kamehameha.

Kaoanaeha (w) ia John Young, companion of Kamehameha.

BACK TO KEAWE
Kealiimaikai, brother of Kamehameha, was the son of Keoua Kalanikupua (k) and Kekuiapoiwa Liliha (w). Through Keoua he was a great grandson of Keawe II and Kalanikauleleiaiwi (w).

John Young was the son of Robert and Grace Young from Liverpool, England. He was born in 1744 and died in Honolulu in 1835.

NAEA LINEAGE
Not so well known is the genealogy of the Queen's father, George Naea, who died in 1854. He had a brother Benjamin Namakeha, first husband of Queen Kapiolani.

Stella Keomailani, regent of the Daughters and Sons of Hawaii Warriors, is a granchild of Namakeha through his son, Hinau.

Naea and Namakeha are from the Moana line, descendants of Keawe II.

Their father was Kekuaeleiki, commonly called Ei'a or Poke'a and their mother was Kauamanu or Kauwamakapaa.

Kekuaeleiki was the son of Kuapuuweloikalani (k) and Hilinaka (w).

Kaumanu was the daughter of Nohomulani, known as Palila (k) and Moana (w).

Moana (w) was the daughter of Kauhiahaki (k) and Ilikiamoana (w). Ilikiamoana was sired by son of Keawe, and Piilanikapo, a Maui Princess.

HANOHANO CHILDREN, THEIR FAMILY NAMES

Hidden Alii, No. 17

The 17 living children of Stella Kaliookalani Piianaia and her husband Peter J.S. Hanohano are a reminder that the Hawaiian race is not going to die.

Of particular interest are in the amily names given each of the Hanohano family accourding to the ancient system. Each name is "kapu" in the family and may be given only those in the family of the alii who previously bore it.

A child can not be named "for" and alii, Western style. The name must be a right or conferred by the alii.

The 17 Hanohano children are:

1- Albert Gordon Kalawai[a]nui Kaluhikai Kaho'alii. His name is that of the Hidden Alii in full.

2- Maria Lupua Kaimookalani. A name referring to a prophet who obtained his powers from the sacred lizard.

3- Edward Bruce Kekunuialaimoku Kawohi Kaho'alii. The Kekunuialaimoku is the name of an ancestress who was the granddaughter of Keawe II, King of Hawaii Island, by his eldest son Kalaninuiamamao.

4- Maude Frances Wahineikaili. She was named for a great aunt, daughter for the first Kalawainui.
5- Esther Nahauapuokalani (The Kapu Hau Tree of Heaven). The name comes from the Piianaia side of the family.
6- Irene Kaoanaeha was named for Queen Emma's grandmother, wife of John Young.
7- Peter Kauhola (What Exists There?) Kauhola was the brother of the first Kalawainui.
8- Edwin Kahakupoolani (The Foremost Chief of Heaven), a Kalawainui ancestor.
9- Carl Alexander Heulumanawaokalani received the Hawaiian name of his uncle St. Chad Piianaia in Los Angeles.
10- Edgar Kaonaona (The Sweet Child) received a pet name of an ancestor.
11- Henry Kalikookalani (Bud of Heaven) was named for his mother and she in turn had been named for the ancestor who was the great granddaughter of Keawe II.
12- Louis Kalawainui Kaluhikai was the second child named for the Hidden Alii.
13- William Moewaa (The Canoe Dream) received his name for his father's family.
14- Harry Benjamin Kaho'alii got the family name.
15- Phillip Kealiimaikai (The Good Chief) was named for the brother of Kamehameha I.
16- Robert Kunuiakea (The National God Ku) was given the sacred name of Kamehameha I.
17- Stella Kahokualakai (The Leading Star) does not have a family name. Hers is a dream name.

LIVING DESCENDANTS OF THE HIDDEN ALII

No. 16

Fanny Malulani Kahoalii who married Abraham St. Chad Piianaia in the 1880s was the ony child of the Hidden Alii. Kalawainui Kaluhikai, who had children to carry on the line.

He descendants may be recognized by their Hawaiian names, most of them a repition of the old family names.

Fanny's own Hawaiian name, Malulani, is the name of Queen Emma's kahili now int eh Bishop Museum. The kahili might be recognized by the ivory circles inserted in the long handle.

Fanny's four children were Grace Kiowai Kamaikui (Mrs. Thomas Tassil of Waimanalo), Maud Niaupio (Mrs. Pali), Gordon Heulumanawaokalani Piianaia of Los Angeles and Stella Kalikookalani (Mrs. Peter Hanohano of 10th Avenue.)

THE CHILDREN

Of the four, three are living. Maud Niaupio Pali died leaving a son David Hapaki Pali who lives on the old family property in Liliha on Kaluhikai Lane.

Gordon Piianaia went to the mainland as a young man and established himself as a singer and a performer. His professional name is St. Chad Piianaia. he had to drop the beautiful hawaiian name Heulumana-wa-okalani (the prince whose intelligence grows like a forest), because it is difficult for Mainlanders. Mr. St. Chad Piianaia has the shu (red) hair and the complexion of his Hawaiian ancestors.

TASSIL CHILDREN

The blood of the Hidden Alii lives on in the children of Grace. Mrs. Thomas Tassil and Stella, Mrs. Peter Hanohano.

Mrs. Tassil's oldest son is Abraham Piianaia of today. He carries the Piianaia name because his grandfather adopted him at birth.

Her other children are Julia, Tommy, Mabel, Charles and Margaret Tassil.

Mrs. Hanohano had 17 children, all of whom are living. These children have family names given to them by the late Lucy Henriques, who took an interest in them as relatives of Queen Emma.

Mrs. Hanohano was educated at the Priory on a Queen's scholarship and her youngest daughter, Stella Kahokualakai Hanohano, is now attending the Priory on the same scholarship.

ST. ANDREW'S WEDDING OF 65 YEARS AGO

Hidden Alii, No. 15

There are people living on Oahu today who remember the wedding in St. Andrew's Cathedral of Abraham St. Chad Piianaia and Fanny Malulani Kaho'alii, daughter of the Hidden Alii.

The wedding took place in the 1880s in the old Procathedral built on the grounds before the stone cathedral of today. It was after the death of good Queen Emma.

The bride was married from the St. Andrew's Priory with Sister Albertina taking all the responsibilty for the ward of Queen Emma. Fanny's expenses at the Priory were paid from scholarship funds left by the Queen.

Fanny Malulani was then a charming Hawaiian lady, barely out of her teens. She had long black wavy hair, big black eyes and was of slight build and medium height. Her skin was a glowing olive color.

FASHIONABLE WEDDING
She was dressed as a bride in proper English style. She wore a long veil, white dress and carried a white bouquet.

The wedding took place at high noon. Bishop Willis presided and was attended by a full turnout of clergymen. Wray Taylor (father of William Bishop Taylor at the Musoleum) played the bridl march of the organ.

Mr. Taylor's small twin daughters, Mabel and Henrietta, preceded the bride as flower girls.They carried rose pedals in small baskets and scattered them before the bride. Sister Albertina had carefully coached the girls and told them they must not leave one rose petal in their baskets.

The alii of the realm were assembled in the church for this wedding, King Kalakaua and Queen Kapiolani occupied the royal pew. Prince Albert Kunuiakea represented the family of Queen Emma. Priory students attended in a body.

After the wedding, a reception was held for the young couple at the Priory where Sister Albertina presided.

SCHOOL TEACHERS
The Abraha St. Chad Piianaias left after their wedding for Ulupalakua, Maui where they were to teach the Hawaiian public school near the ranch. Mr. Piianaia had been previously teaching at Iolani School for Boys.

When Mrs. Piianaia had her first baby, her brother Ilihia Kaho'alii went to Ulupalakua to take her place as a teacher.

School was taught in both Hawaiian and English. One of the students was George Miranda, linotype operator for the The Star Bulletin. He remembers Fanny Malulani Piianaia is a beautiful, rosy cheeked woman.

NAME IS CHANGED BY KING KALAKAUA

Kalilioku Piianaia found her Chinese husband to be a perfect partner except for one thing. He wanted to make his oldest boy, Abraham, a Chinese gentleman.

Akuna had all the virtues of a Chinese husband. He was a good provider, he cooked, tended the children and kept the family well dressed. When farming failed on Lanai,he brought his family back to Honolulu and engaged in business.

By the time Abraham was entering his teens, Akuna had made enough money to go back to China and live as a Chinese gentleman.

Kalilioku did not want to go to China. Akuna tried to talk to her into allowing him to return with just one boy, Abraham. He told her she could keep the other two boys and three girls.

KING KALAKAUA ACTS

The distracted mother turne to King Kalakaua with her problem. She begged him to stop her husband from taking the boy out of Hawaii.

Kalakaua agreed to forbid the boy leaving for China. He went further, he said he would protect all the children by officially changing their name to Piianaia instead of Akuna.

And that is how it happens that the Piianaia children have their mother's name instead of their father's. In some obituaries the members of the family were identified as the son or daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Piianaa Akuna.

Akuna took the King's decision with grace. He gave up returning to China and lived in Honolulu with a son to a ripe old age. He was almost 90 when he died in the 1900s.

SENT TO ENGLAND

Having kept Abraham Piianaia in Hawaii, King Kalakaua began to take interest in the bright young man. When he attained funds to send young Hawaiians to England and Europe to be educated, Abraham Piianaia was among the group. A friend John Lovell, was sent at the same time and returned at the same time.

When he returned from England, Abrahama became Abraham St. Chad Piianaia as has been told before in this story.

During the residence at St. Chad College, Abraham St. Chad Piianaia made friends with an Englishman, Leopold Blackman. The friendship continued after Piianaia returned to Hawaii.

Eventually Mr. Blackman came to Hawaii and settled her. He became a writer on articles about Hawaiiana.

GOO SHIN SEEKS A FORTUNE IN HAWAII

No. 13, Hidden Alii

Goo Shin was a boy of Canton in the 1830s when American trading vessels came into the crowded harbor with loads of fragrant sandalwood from the "Sandwhich Islands," which we call the Hawaiian Islands.

Goo Shin learned that the sandalwood made fabulous fortunes for the foreign devils who ran the ships for the merchants who resold the sandalwood. He dreamed of being a sandalwood merchant and growing wealthy.

When the boy was 10 or 12, he shipped (spelled exactly to article) aboard one of the foreign devil's ships and sailed for Hawaii. He thought he, too, would learn how the foreign devil found the sandalwood and that he too would buy it to resell to China.

When he got to Hawaii about 1840, Goo Shin found that the sandalwood trade no longer existed. Hawaii's mountains had been denuded of sandalwood in the middle of 1830s and there was none to be had by a poor Chinese boy.

NAME IS CHANGED

Since he could not be a sandalwood merchant, Goo Shin turned his hand to doing anything he could find. It was easy to make a living in Hawaii for the harbors teemed with whaling ships and the villages were busy catering to the thousands of whalers on shore leave.

Goo Shin had a terrible time with his Chinese name . he couldn't get the Hawaiians or the haole sailors to pronounce it correctly. The Hawaiians called him Akuna and the haoles followed the Hawaiians. Akuna was much easier to say than Goo Shin, so he gave up trying to go with his real name and became Akuna.

Sometimes the name was spelled Akona and sometimes Akuna. It didn't make much difference to Goo Shin.

AKUNA MARRIES

In the early 1860s, Akuna became acquainted with the Hawaiian family of Piianaia and his wife Kina who had two daughters, Kalilioku and Ulaloha. The Piianaia were high born alii but they were kind to the lonely Chinese.

Eventually Akuna got up the courage to ask Piianaia for his daughter, Kalilioku. He brought presents to the girl and her parents and he promised to take good care of her.

Akuna said he planned to become a farmer on the Island of Lanai where he heard there where only a few Hawaiians living and there was plenty of room for a resourceful Chinese.

And so it happened that Kalilioku Piianaia became Mrs. Akuna and moved to Lanai about 1865 and it was there that a second child, a boy, was born to them in 1868. He was named Abraham Piianaia (article spelling "Pianaia") Akuna.

Chinese Men Make, First Class Husbands

No. 12, Hidden Alii

In the 1850's when Piianaia and Kina were raising their family of girls, Hawaiians wakened to the fact that Chinese made admirable husbands for their daughters.

Many Hawaiians still resented a "foreigner" marrying into the family and some hoped to catch a haole husband for their marriageable daughter. Most haoles were good providers; others were spongers and beachcombers. But the haole considered himself th superior of all races and the Hawaiian took him at his own valuation.

Although the haole was a "catch," the Hawaiian girl knew there were many drawbacks to being the wife of a haole. She had to learn a new culture, she had to prepare three meals a day and she had to be the social equal to her husband.

GOOD PROVIDERS

There were few Chinese in Hawaii up to 1867 so that the Hawaiians were slow in learning that the lonely Chinese was a peer among all foreigners as a husband.

A Chines husband was a good provider. He insisted on handling all the family money, but that was a small matter since he worked steadily and always had money.

The wife of a Chinese wore holokus of fine brocade and the children were prettily dressed in red silks and satins.

A Chinese husband was not encumbered with a mother who interferred with a daughter in law's way of life or tried to impress the Hawaiian girl with the "right" way to be a wife and mother, Chinese style.

COOKING AND BABY TENDING

In fact, the Chinese was so happy to have a wife and children that he happily did all the shopping, cooked the meals and fed the children. He was a "hard head" about feedingthe children good food and feeding them regularly.

A Hawaiian wife could be gone all day attending a social or church meeting. When she came home at night, she could find her Chinese husband had fed the children, bathed them and put them to bed.

He made no fuss about the time she spent with her Hawaiian family and friends, for he went his way socially and allowed her to go her way.

Hawaiian babies started calling their Chinese fathers pake and the word became the common term for a Chinese. Pake is Hawaiian corruption of the Chinese word in the Canton dialect, pak-ya which means father.

Piianaia Family, Queen's Relatives

No. 11, Hidden Alii

When Fanny Malulani Kaho'alii, daughter of the hidden alii, met Abraham St. Chad Piianaia, she became acquainted with another branch of Queen Emma's family.

Abraham St. Chad Piianaia was a junior member of the senior branch of the family which reckoned its geneology straight back to the kings who ruled the Big Island between the 11th and 18th centuries.

The name Piianaia has two meanings. Literally, it means "the season when the mullet break from the water." Sybolically, it means "the men who follow the beautiful women." The name is also the answer to the Hawaiian riddle, "men or fish."

KAMEHAMEHA'S NEPHEW

The first modern Piianaia was a son born to Keliimaikai, full brother of Kamehameha I, and his wife Nunehiwaokalani. Piianaia was a half brother of Kekuaokalani, last defender of the ancient faith and Kaoanaeha, wife of John Young and grandmother of Queen Emma.

Most important was the fact that he was a paternal nephew of Kamehameha I; his grandfather Keoua being the father of Kamehameha.

The geneolgy of the first Piianaia's mother Nunehiwaokalani has been lost, but her name tells us she was the daughter of a high priest. Her name means that at the time fo her birth their were whisperings of scandal and that her family was not afraid of scandal.

They name the child "the whisperings" and so dared the scandal-mongers to talk openly about her.

Piianaia had two daughters by a wife Kina whose real name was Kekupuo-i-kamai-kalani (The offspring of Kamai). The daughters were Kalilioku and Ulaloha.

THE FAMILY

Abraham St. Chad Piianaia was the second of Kalilioku's six children. His brothers and sisters were:Ulualoha (Offspring of Love) who was named for her childless aunt Ulualoha; Alexandria Kalilioku, called Alania. Kiakiakoi (Master Priest of an Order of Physicians); Keliihooluhi (The Weary and Overburdened Chief); and Kamoonohu (God of the Nohu, a small fish living in sea rocks).

Kalilioku was an old family name meaning "The Pride of Kalilimoku." Several members of the family had been guardians of the national war god Kukalilimoku. The name was given either a boy or a girl in each generation of the family.

No one outsde the family could use the name.

Moopu'u II lingered at Kaluanui on Windward Oahu long enough to collect a boatload of taxes with which he returned to Hawaii, thus making his trip look natural.

During his stay on Oahu, he did not explain to his uncle about the temple incident. He casually said Kalawainui would like to stay on Oahu until the next tax collecting trip.

So Moopu'u II returned to Hawaii alone. Months later he came back to Oahu with two canoes. One he loaded with tax goods, the other left Windward Oahu with two in it, himself and Kalawainui.

As the two canoes rounded Koko Head they parted company. The canoe loaded with tax goods sailed straight for Hawaii, the other coasted along the Oahu shoreline to Waianae.

At Waianae the young Kalawainui stepped ashore to start a new and strange life as a fisherman. Moopu'u II paddled away without looking back.

THE FISHERMAN

Kalawainui carried fishing equipment and a bundle wrapped in ti leaves to hide its beautiful tapa covering. When he met other fishermen, he answered their first question by saying his name was Kaluhikai (Tired and Weary). He said he came from over the Waianae mountains.

Since it was impolite for a Hawaiian to ask too many questions, the Waianae people did not press Kaluhikai for further information about his family. They took it for granted that he did not know his geneology.

Kaluhikai had no trouble making himself and home, for Hawaiian custom decreed hospitable treatment for all strangers.

Time went by and Kaluhikai took a wife, the daughter of a Waianae fisherman, and the couple had four children.

HUMBLE FAMILY

Kalehua, the wife, thought nothing strange about her husband and showed no curiosity when he hid a tapa covered bundle in their house and cautioned her never to open the bundle. She thought it probably an old family fishing god.

And so Kaluhikai grew old and died when his four children were still young. Kalehua lived on the learn the true identity of her husband one day in 1870 when Queen Emma came to call and asked to see the hidden bundle.

The four children were given family names when they came to the wards of Queen Emma. The family surname became Kaho'alii and the children received Christian given names as well as Hawaiian names.

The oldest girl was Maud Niaupio Kaho'alii. She died while attending the Priory. The second girl, Fanny Malulani Kaho'alii married Abraham St. Chad Piianaia and had a family.

The brothers were Alexander Kaho'alii and Ilihia Kaho'alii. Alexander died young and Ilihia became a teacher at the old Royal School. He, too, died without children, so Fanny's children were the only descendants of the Hidden Alii.

Their was a pause in the rigurous 10 day ceremony of dedicating a new oha god for the heiau in Kona. The priests of Lono had completed the prayers which took four hours to perform during which all the audience knelt rigidly on one knee with their hands and arms uplifted.

During this pause, the alii gathered in the sacred house near the altar, relaxed and were served dinner of the pork sanctified at the preciding day's sevices.

The young Kalawainui was about 19. He was attending the service in th company of his foster-father Moopu'u II and had no servant of his own to relieve him during the period of relaxation.

KAPU BROKEN

The youth was also paralyzed with the need of going to the toilet. Although death awaited the man who broke the kapu by stepping over the doorsill of the sacred house, the youth blindly rushed to the door.

As he started to step over the doorsill, Kaho'alii, his own grandfather, raised his arm to strike the youth down.

Moopu'u II was watching. He raised his arm and cried, "Wohi" (the cry of his office as Moopu'u). "There is no life or death in your hands - life and death is in my hands."

Kaho'alii dropped his arm and the youth looked around in a daze. Moopu'u walked over to the youth, put his arm around him and walked him out of the sacred house as was his right. By putting his arm around the youth he covered the boy with his own kapu.

EXILE
Not a word was said between the two as Moopu'u walked with the young Kalawainui through the heiau out the path to their own home.

At the house, Moopu'u quickly gathered a few clothes and food and again taking Kalawainui by the hand slipped through the village to his canoe. He commanded the boy to get in it.

Taking turns at the paddles, the two men rowed and sailed the ocean until they reached the shores of windward Oahu. The route was familiar to Moopu'u for it was one of his duties to make trips back and forth to Oahu with boatloads of taxes for the King. Ordinarily Moopu'u made the trips with a fleet of rowers.

Once arrived on Oahu, Moopu'u landed at Punaluu where he put the younger Kalawainui in the care of his uncle Keulua at Kaluanui.

The story of the hidden alii told by Kauhai to Queen Emma and her mother Kekela had as its background the religious ceremonies of old Hawaii which were totally unknown today by Hawaii's young people.

The time of the story is about 1800. Kamehameha had conquered and pacified Oahu and had stationed his own alii on Oahu as the rulers of each district. Keulua, an uncle of Moopu'u II, was the Konohiki (district manager) and tax collector for the king at Kalua-nui (Big Hole) near Punaluu on Windward Oahu.

The settling of the story is a heiau temple in Kona, Hawaii, dedicated to the war god Ku.

The occasion was one of the rigurous 10 day ceremonies for dedicating and setting up a new ohia wood image of the god. Services began when the ohia image had been hauled from a location in the forest to the heiau. Carving of the image had been done in the forest.

DEDICATION SERVICE

The order of the Ku priests, plus the priests of the Kane and Kanaloa orders were assembled within the walls of the great stone heiau altar. To conduct the services which lased day and night.

With the priests were the king, all the male alii of the court and as many commoners as would attended such a rigorous service. No women were allowed.

The king and the highest alii assembled in a grass house built near the heiau altar. The alii were not allowed to go outside the grass house during that 10 day period. The front of the house, facing the altar, was open so that they could take part in the service without being seen by the commoners.

There were no toilet facilities in this sacred house. Such facilities would be a defilement to the place. Slave attendants of the alii served their masters by thrusting vessels through the thatch of the outside wall of the house.

GODS IN PROCESSION

Kamohoalii I was one of the principal priests taking part in the services.

At one point, he led the procession of the priests who paraded about the altar carrying the images of their many gods. At other times, he led the ceremonies in which Kamohoalii and the priests said responsive prayers.

Within the sacred grass house with the alii were Kamahoalii II and Moopu'u II. It was there duty to see that the kapus were enforced.

The boy, Kalawainui II, was also present and participating as one of the alii.

The position of the human god and enforcer of the kapus, Kamoho[l]aii, seems to have been filled by one man at a time until the reign fo Kamehameha I (1782-1819).

Since the human god was so important, the position was generally held by a younger son or a grandson of the king. Kamohoalii therefore was of the highest alii blood but of a junior line. as a member of the ruling family, he helped bolster the authority of the king.

When Kamehameha became ruler of Kona on the Big Island, Kamohoalii was a priest whose real name was Kalani-nui-Kaleleau (The great prince Kaleleau). When he took the part of thehuma god in releigious services, he was called Kaho-alii (an elided form of Kamohialii). When he acted as marshall for the kapus, he was called Moopu'u. In geneologies he is either Kaho'alii I (Peer of the King) or Moopu'u I.

KALIKOOLANI

The wife of his youth was the high born chiefess Kalikookalani, great granddaughter of King Keawe who ruled the Island of Hawaii about 1700. Their child was a son named Kama-alo. He was commonly called Kaho'alii II, as he was his father's successor in that office.

During the time of Kamehameha the position of human god and marshal of the kapus became too big a job for one man, so the position was divided between two men.

Kaho'alii II retained his father's position as the priest human god and his cousin was made marshal of the kapus and was called Moopu'u II.The two traveled together.

Kaho'alii II has a son named Kalawainui and he in turn had a son of the same name. This child, Kalawainui II, was raised by Moopu'u II as his foster son.

Moopu'u II and Kalai nui II are the chief characters that figure in our story of the hidden alii.

QUEEN'S RELATIONSHIP

Queen Emma and her mother Kekala considered the family of Kalawainui I to be their closest relatives for the reason that Kalawainui's grandmother Kalikookalani was also Queen Emma's ancestor.

When Kalawainui was growing up, his grandmother Kalikoolani (Bud of Heaven) has married Keliimaikai (Kalanimalo-kuloku-i-ke-pookalani), full brother of Kamehameha I. By Keliimaikai (The Good Chief) Kallikookalani had two children. They were a boy, Kekuaokalani and a girl Kaoanaeha.

Kekuao(a)kalani, like his father grew up to be a priest and eventually died defending the old faith. The girl, Kaoanaeha, was given by Kamehameha to the Englishman John Young at the age of 8. She was the mother of Kekela and grandmother of Queen Emma. Kaoanaeha was aunt to the hidden alii.

An important position in the preiesthood of old Hawaii on the Big Island was that of Kamohoalii, the priest who took the part of a human god in religious ceremonies.

He became a human god in the minds of the Hawaians because his duty included the enforcement of kapus (taboos) which regulated worship of the great gods.

It was much easier for Kamohoalii to decree the death penalty if the peoplethought of him as a god in human form. Death was a punishment for all those who broke the rules and regulations daown by the priesthood as the proper worship of the gods.

NAKED GOD
To further the idea of his godhood, the Hawaiian priests had Kamohoa(m)alii take part in temple ceremonies naked. He only wore the garments of a priest only when traveling with the king. Nakedness was the symbold of modesty and by going naked, Kamahoalii showed is respect for the god he represented.

Kamohoalii had many important fundctions to perform. He took part in the opening cermonies which opened the opelu fishing season and those which closed the opelu season and opened the aku fishing season.

At the end of the month, when the moon disappeared for a night, he hid in a darkened house as the symbol of the dying moon renewing its life by spending the night with the great god Kane, giver of life. He spent the night praying life into the moon.

During the harvest festival (Makahiki), he traveled with the banner of the god Lono and enforced the kapus for this god and incidentally helped gather the taxes.

PRIVILEDGES OF A GOD
Wherever he went, Kamohoalii was preceeded by his own heralds whe carried his tabu stick which had the white feathers of the white haupu bird attached to one end.

Being a god, Kamohoalii was allowed priviledges no other men possesed. He could eat with alii women without breaking his sanctity or harming them.

But, the greatest of ll his privledges was the law which allowed him to break all kapus without offending. For instance, when other male members of the alii were shut up for for four to 10 days at a time in a house within the temple to take part in a ceremony, he could that kapu without suffering the penalty of death.

It was the priviledge that leads to our story of the hidden alii.

Before Queen Emma, her mother Kekela and Kauhai left Waianae that wonderful day in the 1870s, they learned all they could of the life of Kaluhikai, the hidden alii, from his widow Kalehua.

Kalehua told them patiently how Kaluhikai had earned a living by fishing, and how he had loved their two children, the boy Kaluhikai II and the girl Malulani.

When Queen Emma asked to take the children to Honolulu and put them in school, the widow hesitated and said,

My husband told me, "If the alii ever come for our children, don't let them go for life with the alii is unsecure. There is too much jealousy among them."

Queen Emma suggested then that the children be allowed to enter the schools at St. Andrew's Cathedral. She said she was anxious to recompense the children for the hardships their father had known.

At last Kalehua gave in.

CHANGED NAMES

The Queen took the little family to town to her own estates and entered the children in the Priory and Iolani. Eventually the boy was christened in the S. Andrew's Cathedral as Alexander Kahoalii and the girl was christened Fanny Malulani Kamaikui. Both Kahoalii and Kamaikui were alii family names which told of the children's high ancestry.

Queen Emma also took the tapa bundle containing the identfying garments of the hidden alii. Kalehua willingly gave them into her keeping, for she had a guilty conscience about owning them since her husband had forbidden her to open the bundle.

STORY IS TOLD

Just what became of the feather shoulder cape and the feather sash will never be known. The shoulder cape may be in the Bishop Museum with other possessions of the Queen. There is no garment either in the museum or in Queen Emma's home which answers to the description of the feather sash.

The sash may have been a girdle of feathers similar to the Malo of Liloa which adorns the statue of Kamehameha. The sash may have been used in installation ceremonies when members of the family became qualified priests.

Now that the family of the hidden alii had been found, Kauhai felt free to tell the story of the hiding away as it was told him by his father Moopu'u II who has saved the alii's life when he was a young man and had hidden him at Waianae, Oahu.

Moopu'u II had told Kauhai the story in confidence. Since Queen Emma and Kekela were of the senior line of the family and therefore his superiors, Kauhai could tell the story without breaking confidence.

It was a sunny day in the 1870s when Queen Emma and her mother The High Chiefess Kekala set out on their journey to Waianae, Oahu in search of the lost relatives of the Hidden Alii.

They had no trouble locating the widow Kalehua when they arrived at Waianae. They found her living in a humble grass house with two children running about, a boy and a girl.

The woman was flustered when she discovered that her callers were the gracious Queen Emma and her mother. She had only seen them at a distance before.

HUMBLE FISHERMAN

She said "Yes" her name was Kalehua, but when the Queen asked if her husband was Kalawainui, the woman looked dismayed and said she had never heard of such a man. Her husband's name was Kaluhikai (Tired and Weary), a humble fisherman not a "Big Fisherman."

The baffled Queen looked at the lovely young girl and the handsome boy in dismay. She asked many questions but could get no further information about the husband from Kalehua.

The dejected Queen and her mother left Waianae and returned to Honolulu where they hastily summoned Kauhai and upbraided him for giving them information which led to a dreary trip for nothing.

Kauhai assured the Queen she was on the right track, but he told her she would never discover the hidden alii by asking for him by his correct name. She must learn his assumed name and then ask for him.

Queen Emma made a second trip to Waianae. This time she took Kauhai with her.

BUNDLED SECRET

When the group reached the home of Kalehua, Kauhai did not stop to ask questions about the husband. He said to the woman, "Where is the bundle your husband left with you and told you never to open?"

Immediately Kalehua ran to an inner room and came back with a bundle wrapped in beautiful tapa. She laid the bundle at the Queen's feet without opening it.

Queen Emma's hands trembled as she opened the bundle. In it, she found a feather shoulder cape worked with a design used only by members of her family and a girdle of red feathers.

Kalehua stared. She had never seen the contents of that bundle and she told Kauhia that her husband had never told her his true name or that he was an alii.

When Abraham St. Chad Piianaia returned from England and began teaching at Iolani School, he became acquainted with a lovely Hawaiian girl attending St. Andrews Priory as a ward of Queen Emma.

Fanny Malulani (Soft Breeze of the Tradewind) Kamaikui spent her time away from school at the home of Queen Emma. It was there that Abraham St. Chad Piianaia courted her and made her his wife.

Mr. Piianaia would never have known the girl had it not been that she was a close relative of the Queen's and the daughter of the true "Hidden Alii."

Her father's life had been most dramatic and if the Queen had not taken an interest in discovering his whereabouts, Fanny Malulani would probably have grown up in Waianae as an unknown fisherman's daughter who did not know her father's true family name was Kamaikui.

A LOST UNCLE

Queen Emma was very kind to all her relatives and the Hawaiians who had served in her families. But she yearned to help the nearest relative of all, an uncle who was lost to his family as a young man and hidden away to save his life.

The Queen had heard the story many times from her mother Kekelaokalani. She knew the uncle might still be living in some out of the way place or that he might have a family.

The trouble was that Kekoa(?) did not know the real or assumed name of this uncle, so the woman felt helpless when they decided to begin the hunt to locate him.

THE BIG FISHERMAN

They did the logical thing. They sent for a relative living in Nuuani (spelled/typed exact, perhaps "Nuuanu") Valley and asked him if the story of the hidden alii had ever been told by his father Moopu 2nd, the man who had hidden the young alii.

This relative Kauhaipu-o keku Haupio-ike-kanaka (spelled/typed exact from excerpt) said "Yes." His father told him in confidence of the hiding and had told him the true name of the hidden alii. The name, Kahaipu said was Kalawainui (The Big Fisherman) and the place was Waianae, Oahu.

Kauhaipu said they would find Kalawainui dead but that his widow, Kalehua, was living at Waianae with the children.

Queen Emma and her mother Kekela triumphantly set out for Waianae to find Kalehua and her children. It was a lond trip in those days because it had to be made with horse and buggy.

Educator Abraham Piianaia dead at 87

Abraham Piianaia, 87-year-old educator, geographer, historian, seaman, explorer, police detective and "Living Treasure," died Feb. 2 at his home in Honolulu.

Abraham Piianaia was an early chairman of the University of Hawai'i program in Hawaiian studies.

"Abe was a very special peron," said Piianaia's student and longtime friend, Lehman "Bud" Henry, a retired geographer. "He was my mentor, that's what he was. He was well respected by everyone."

Piianaia will be remembered by many for his work as an educator, beginning in the 1950s as a teacher of the Hawaiian language at Kamehameha Schools and continuing for 40 years as a lecturer in geography, history and Hawaiian studies.

Piianaia was an early chairman of the program in Hawaiian studies at the University of Hawai'i, and his work has helped to perpetuate the Hawaiian culture. In 1999, he was awarded the title of "Living Treasure" by the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawai'i.

Piianaia was born near a waterfall at Waikahalulu, on Nu'uanu Stream, on June 15, 1915, his family said. He graduated from Kamehameha Schools in 1933.

In 1935 and 1936, he became a pioneer member of Hui Panala'au, a group of young men who moved to the strategically important Line Islands of Baker, Jarvis and Howland as colonizers for the United States. The men, particularly in the first expeditions, lived a harsh existence far from Hawai'i. Piianaia led his peers in the first four expeditions.

Afterward, he became a Honolulu police detective, a job he held before and after World War II.

During the war, Piianaia went to sea with the U.S. Merchant Marine and quickly rose through the ranks. He made shipmaster, a designation equivalent to captain, in 18 months. He was qualified to command ships of all weights in any ocean.

In 1947, he became shipmaster of a fisheries research vessel owned by the Territory of Hawai'i. In that capacity, he conducted investigations and studies of the Hawaiian waters and reefs.

His seafaring life continued for many decades. Piianaia retired with the rank of commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve and later served as a shipboard lecturer on cruise ships.

At age 70, he was a crew member aboard the Polynesian voyaging canoe, Hokule'a. He served under his son and alongside his grandson on that voyage.

Piianaia is survived by his children, Gordon Yee Piianaia, Norman Abraham Piianaia and Ilima Anne Piianaia; grandchildren, St. Chad Kalilioku Piianaia, Chris Kaliko Piianaia, Maikai David Piianaia and Gordon Heulumaikahiki; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be next Sunday at Diamond Head Mortuary where visitation will be from noon to 3 p.m., with services to follow. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Abraham Piianaia Scholarship Fund at the University of Hawai'i Foundation.

Almost everyone called him an "limey or Limejuicer" because he spoke with an English accent and he dressed like an Englishman. They didn't call him "Limey" to his face, for no one would think of using a nickname when addressing an alii of such courtly manners.

He signed his name "A. St. Chad Piianaia" so people forgot his real name was Abraham Piianaia.

This Mr. Piianaia was the first to carry the name Abraham. He was born June 7, 1868 during the reign of Kamehameha the VI in Lanai City and was brought to Honolulu in early life to be educated at English church school by Queen Emma.

As a boy, he showed promise of his alii blood and was one of those selected by King Kalakaua to be sent to Europe for an education so that he could take a place in government.

THE NAME ST. CHAD

Abraham Piianaia attended Oxford and received a degree from St. Chad, one of the colleges that made up Oxford University.

He majored in law, so he took the Temple Bar examinations in London and received his license. Then he returned to Hawaii.

It was then that he adopted the St. Chad in memory of his alma mater and began to sign his name A. St. Chad Piianaia.

Instead of practicing law, Mr, Piianaia became and educator. He taught at Iolani School when the unknown boy, Sun Yat Sen, was a student there. He joined the public school system and taught in several rural schools, including Ulupalakua on Maui.

Then in midlife he changed his occupation and became a court interpreter. He still had time to carn a pension when he went to work for the Navy Yard. He retired in 1935 and died at the age of 73 in 1941.

PIIANAIA FAMILIES
Mr. Piianaia raised three families. The first was his wife Fanny Malulani Kamaikui. The second included two school teacher daughters whom his second wife, Louise Kahoaloha Kalama brought into his home.

The third was his granson, his namesake, who was the child of his oldest daughter and the first grandchild born into the family. Hawaiian style he adopted the boy as his own.

Pershaps is was the influence of A. St. Chad Piianaia and the urging of the school teacher stepdaughters that gave the scond Abraham his huner for knowledge. His home was a place of learning similar to the schools conducted by his alii ancestors.

Hidden Alii, No. 1

If all goes according to plan, Abraham Piianaia will receive a master's degree in Pacific Area Studie from the University of Hawaii in June of 1954 and will be the first Hawaiian to do so.

Mr. Piianaia was graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University in January 1953. If he gets his master's degree, he hopes to continut until he gets a doctorate.

All Hawaiians may take pride in Mr. Piianaia's accomplishments, for he is a symbol of the coming of age of the Hawaiian. They may be proud of the fact that Mr. Piianaia, a descendant of the old priests who were Hawaii's intellectuals, is demonstrating a desire for scholarship shown by his alii ancestors, one of whom was a true "hidden" alii.

Mr. Piianaia was graduated from the Kamehameha Schools in 1933 when jobs were at a premium. Since he could not afford to attend the University, he took a job as a stevadore. Eventually this led to signing on a ship which carried him around the world.

MASTER'S LICENSE

He joined the Honolulu Police Force in 1937, expectin the settle down and spend full time supporting his wife and two growing boys. The World War II came along and he took leave of absence in1942 to go to the Mainland to attend a maritime school.

In the same manner that his Hawaiian ancestors had obtained knowledge to guide them on 2,000 mile voyages, Piianaia obtained a Master's Unlimited License and joined the Army Transport Service.

He saw more of the world from the decks of an Army Transport and rejoined the police force at the end of the war. He left the Police Department in 1952 to work for the Public Utilities Commission.

UNIVERSITY STUDENT

Mr. Piianaia's hunger for knowledge had been fed by his travels. Now he decided on ambitious project. He kept his full time job (to support his family) and enrolled at the University of Hawaii.

His interest in anthropology, languages and the cultures of the many people he had visited in the Pacific led to his determination to study the University's new graduate course of the Pacific Areas.

In order to learn other Polynesian languages, Piianaia decided he must first perfect his knowledge of Hawaiian. He spoke Hawaiian fluently but he did not know its technicalities, so he enrolled in the class at the University taught by Samuel Elbert, master of many Polynesian languages.

As he learned his own language, Piianaia taught it in turn to a class of teachers at Kamehameha Schools. Now he is furthering his knowledge of Hawaiian by acting as guide to exhibits on Saturday and Sunday at the Bishop Museum.

The Honolulu Star-Bulletin, Friday, January 23, 1959 - "Clarice B. Taylor's Tales about Hawaii"

The Reverend Alexander O. Forbes and his wife Maria Jane Chamberlain were living in Hilo in 1878 when Mr. Forbes called to serve as a juror on circuit court cases.

The Circuit court traveled in those days and held sessions in each important town. Natives could ask for a jury of all white men or half native and half white.

BUSY TIME
At the end of the 1878 session Mr. Forbes wrote his wife:

"This has been a long busy session of the court. Folsom was unanimously acquitted by the jury, on the charge of manslaughter -

"The case of Atai and the two other Chinamen taken up to Hilo last May for smuggling opium, was tried. One of the three plead guilty, and the other two where acquitted...It was a sharp dodge, for the jurymen have since said that they let those two off under the idea that the one who pleaded guilty exonerated them.

"The verdict certainly was an unexpected one. However, they have already had six months imprisonment and it is hoped their opium den will be broken up.

"Today the whole day has been occupied with a trial from Hamakua between C(harles) Notley and a native named Nainoa. It is the culmination of a series of difficulties going on between them for nearly two years past.

"The verdict of the jury which was half native and half white was in Notley's favor - giving him damage of $100 instead of $1000 which he claimed.

FORTY CASES
"Tonight they are having an evening session to finish up on the divorce cases - there were nearly forty divorce cases on the calendar - they have already disposed of a good many.

"Although there have been between 60 and 70 cases on the calendar at this term - They have had two evening sessions, and this makes the third; working as late as ten o'clock each time.

"I have got myself excused this evening as I have quite a cold - I am now using diluted carbolic acid for my throat."

Treasured in the collection of family letters preserved by young David Forbes are those of his grandfather, the Reverend Alexander O. Forbes, written to his wife Maria Jane Chamberlain.

The Reverend Forbes was the son of missionaries Cochran Forbes and his wife was the daughter of missionaries Levi and Maria Patton Chamberlain.

The letters speak of changing fashion. Whereas the missionary parents had addressed their mates as "Dear friends," or "Dear companions" their children addressed their's as "My darling wife" or "My dearest one."

Reverend Forbes signed himself "Ever your own."

TRAVELS MUCH
As a missionary, Reverend Forbes traveled a great deal about the Islands and wrote letters at each stop to his "dearest one."

In the letter written from Honolulu June 18, 1877, he gives us a picture of another set of missionaries - the Hawaiians who went to the Marshall Islands. His news is interesting as it concerns Missionary Simeon P.K. Nawaa, father of the present Simeon K. Nawaa who is living today at the age of 88.

"I preached at Kaumakapili in the morning - the people at Kaumakapili were very cordial - they send a great deal of aloha - the old church is kept in good repair, and looks very nicely.

SHIP SAILS
"The Morning Star got off last Thursday - Dr. and Mrs. Pease, Mrs. Logan and adopted child, Rev. S. P. Kaaia and wife, and Mr. Nawaa & wife went in her.

"Nawaa, you know, has married the widow of his brother, Kahelemauna, who returned her in the M. Star last trip. - Nawaa sent a great deal of aloha to you.

"I met Lukia (Princess Ruth) there that day and have seen her twice since - she appears more steady and does not look so hard and dissipated as she did. I have not been able yet to find out anything about her present mode of life."

Another historic letter was written February 12, 1874, by Marie P. Chamberlain to her Hilo daughters just four days after the letter relating the death of King Lunalilo.

"You have no conception of what we have been passing through yesterday and today. Indeed we knew all this week that Queen Emma was holding mass meetings with Pahu Kula for her spokesman & Philipo also. he made great promises to the people and gained largely in numbers and influence. Thursday the legislature met at the Court House and a majority of 40, was given favor of D. Kalakaua and only SIX for Q. Emma.

"It was about 2 p.m. when the question was decided and Major Moehonua and another person were directed to convey the information to the King.

MOB FORMS
"There was a tremendous dark cloud coming down over the faces of the people who has filled the yard, which instantly broke out into a mob, and when the appointed persons got into the carriage, the horse was seized by the head, the top of the carriage was twisted of, Major was pulled out and thrown over the fence and was considerably injured.

"Then the mob rushed into the court house breaking everything before them and fell pell-mell on the legislature, using clubs and stones, chairs and everything they could get hold of and broke the sash and windows all to pieces.

Honolulu Court House Election Riot, 1874

"One man was thrown out the second story window and fell on an outside trap door and Mr. Tomm Martin in a effort to shield his nephew in (Maria Kekelia's husband) from being thrown out of the window, received a wound on his hand.

"Mr. Kipa of Hilo is very dangerously hurt, and is feared fatally.

"18th Sat. 3 p.m. I have baked and I have starched, and have just eaten dinner and must now hasten to close this letter.

"If it had not been for a kind overruling Providence, in ordering the three men of war should be here just now, we might have had much more serious times that we have had.

FOREIGN AID
"We are under foreign military protection just now.

"Mattie and I rode down town yesterday p.m. to see the dilapidated Court House... On our way home I called up Mr. Moehonua's and left my aloha for him and Mr. Kipi. There is still hope for them.

"I must now stop for it is time to dress and go down to the Nettle for we have made a cake for the Captain today.

"I hope there will be no outbreaks at the other islands but may we all abide under the shadow of the Almighty."
