Science Fair

On March 4th, 15 students from our school, 5 from each grade, went to the Chester County Science Fair. Sajjad Ali Khan entered the project “Do Birds Prefer a Color of Birdseed Over Another?” in the behavioral and social sciences category. Sachi Patel entered the project “H2O, We Hardly Know You” in the chemistry category. Ryan Hastings entered the project “pH vs. Voltage: Electrolysis of Water” in the chemistry category. Nick Yang entered the project “Creation of a Biofuel Through the Fermentation of Corn” in the engineering category. Julia McDonnell entered the project “Affects of a Polluted Environment on the Growth of Evergreen Trees” in the environmental science category. Ahmed Shahzad entered the project “Which Type of Recycled Paper Has Better Quality” in the environmental science category. Sagar Maheshwari entered the project “The Effect of Silver Nanoparticles on the Remediation of Cyanobacterial Toxin from Water” in the environmental science. Paige Young entered the project “The Effects of Pollutants on the Bioluminescence of Dinoflagellates” in the microbiology category. Edward Zhao entered the project “What Common Home Materials are the Best at Sound Proofing?” in the physics category. Sweta Prasad and Roma Pathak entered the project “Will Drinking Milk Help Improve Athletic Performance?” in the team category. Constantinos Konstantopoulo and Grant Astin entered the project “How Does Cell Phone Radiation Effect Life?” in the team category. Cayla Rubin entered the project “Which Comes First, the Chicken or the Egg?” in the zoology category. Dana Homer entered the project “Chicken Run” in the zoology category.

Everyone made some amazing projects, and should be congratulated for their hard work and scientific intellect. In addition, Paige Young won second place in microbiology, Dana Homer won second place in zoology, and Sagar Maheshwari won first place in environmental science as well as the Excellence in Environmental Science special award. All of these three students will continue onto the DelVal Science fair in April.

MathCounts

A while ago, our school was represented at the MathCounts competition by some extraordinary mathematicians. Our 6th grade team was Swatha Gopel, Jane Bai, Jake Haplea, and Divyan Jain. They all did great, and Divyan earned the 2nd highest score during the competition.
We had two 7th/8th grade teams. Our first team was Jason Zhang, Suchi Jain, Benjamin Ke, Michael Iacocca, Ryan Hastings, and Edward Zhao. The second team was Abhay Malik, Nick Yang, Ethan Pan, and Sagar Maheshwari. Abhay placed 10th overall, Nick placed 27th, Ethan placed 30th, and Sagar placed 33rd in the competition. The team of Abhay, Nick, Ethan, and Sagar finished in 4th place.
Congratulations to everyone who participated in the competition! We hope to see you again next year!

Coming out on November 22, 2013, the Hunger Games series Catching Fire Movie has many high expectations. In this new movie, Sam Claflin stars as Finnick Odair. He never thought he would get the role, but fortunately he did. Although he had to go through many spray tans and dye his hair blonde, it’s all for a good reason. Catching Fire will turn out to be a great movie. The new director of Catching Fire is Francis Lawrence. He says he will direct the movie like Gary, the first movie’s director, but will change up some things. Catching Fire is about when the 74th annual Hunger Games approaches, and they take two winners from the previous games in each district. Each of the winners fight for their life, and try to win the games. Also, the love triangle of Peeta, Katniss, and Gale continues in Catching Fire. Read the book, then watch the movie to see what happens next!

Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran’s album “+” was nominated for a Grammy in 2013. His album features twelve songs with an additional track called the “Parting Glass” which is a traditional song. The singles from the album include “The A Team,” “Drunk,” “Small Bump,” “Lego House,” “You Need Me, I Don't Need You,” and “Give Me Love.” After listening to the album I was impressed by all of his songs especially since he wrote and produced all of them. It is also #1 on five international charts. He has worked with many other artists like One Direction and Taylor Swift. He has written three songs for One Direction and they are “Moments,” “Over Again,” and “Little Things.” He is also on tour with Taylor Swift with her Red Tour. As you can see this rising star will be the next big thing.

Super Bowl 47

Super Bowl 47 was a great game! The final score of the game was 34-31 Ravens. The Ravens stopped the 49ers with two minutes left in the game when the defense made Colin Kaepernick turn the ball over. Joe Flacco was named MVP and this was a great year for Ravens LB Ray Lewis to retire. Also, the reason of the blackout was a surprise failure in the power box that connects the cable from the Mercedes Super Dome.
