HSC Spring Competition and Test Session March 3-4, 2012

The Hawkeye Skating Club Spring Competition and Test Session, including a basic skills competition, will be held on March 3-4, 2012 at the Coral Ridge Ice Arena. The competition entry forms must be postmarked by February 3rd, and the test application forms must be postmarked by February 10th. We will accept late entry forms for the test session, but they must be postmarked by February 17th and must include an additional late entry fee. Entry forms and test application forms will be posted on the website soon. In the meantime, if you need an entry form, have questions about the competition or the test session, or have a general question about the club, please send an email to president@hawkeyeskating.org and I’ll be happy to assist you.

HSC Updates For Week of 8/28/2011

It is hard to believe it’s almost September. As promised, here is my late August HSC Club Update:
1) Club Ice
Club Ice resumes on Wednesday, September 7 5:45-6:45 pm.

The rates for club ice will remain the same as they were last year.
$4 per session for members, $8 per session for non-members. A 10 session punch card will be available for $38-and is an option for full or associate members, but not for non-members. A season’s pass is available for all full members at a rate of $120. If you wish to purchase a season’s pass or a punch card, you can do so either via this web-site (click on club ice at the right) or at the beginning of every club ice session. If you know you are likely to skate at most club ice sessions this season, the season’s pass offers significant savings over the course of the year.

Club Ice will be held every Wednesday during the school year except for the following dates: November 23, December 7, December 28, and March 14th. There will be one more date in April or May when Club Ice is canceled due to rehearsal for the Spring Show, but that date is not yet known so it will be announced at a later time. The last day for Club Ice for this season will be May 23rd.

Just a reminder that if the Iowa City Community School District cancels school or has an early dismissal due to winter weather, club ice for that evening will also be canceled. (Unless the mall actually closes, the rink may run public skate during those times, so you can always check with them if you are wanting to skate even though club ice has been canceled.)

2) Annual meeting and board elections

We will hold our annual membership meeting on Wednesday, September 7, at 7 pm in one of the meeting rooms by the rink. Please consider attending as we’ll discuss our club calendar for the year (including our plans for the spring Competition and for fall exhibitions and the holiday show). In addition, we’ll be discussing board elections, and if enough are present, we’ll conduct the actual board elections that evening. If we don’t have sufficient attendance to actually do the elections that evening, we will handle elections via an electronic vote. Please consider joining us for the meeting and let me know if you have any suggestions for additional agenda items.

3) Membership Renewals

A few of you have still not renewed your memberships from last year. It is not too late to do so. Just go to the membership link on the right to complete membership paperwork and then either pay on-line via paypal or leave a check made out to Hawkeye Skating Club at the rink. Coaches: if you’ve not yet renewed and intend to coach on club ice, please remember you must join as a coach. Per USFSA requirements, you must complete the USFSA coaches registration process in time for us to verify you have done so prior to coaching during club ice.

UPDATES FOR SUMMER 2011 and MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL INFORMATION

Happy Memorial Day!

1) Membershp Renewals/Applications
All current and potentiall HSC members are encouraged to renew/join Hawkeye Skating Club. Current memberships in HSC and USFSA expire on June 30, 2011 so if you have plans to test or compete in July it is important to get your membership renewal materials in as soon as possible. Information can be found by clicking the membership tab. Application forms should be submitted via this web-site and payments can be made via paypal, by credit card or by leaving a check at the rink in the HSC mailbox.

A $5 discount is offered on individual memberships if you renew by June 30, 2011.

Questions about the membership renewal process should be emailed to president@hawkeyeskating.org

2) Club Ice
Club Ice has ended for the season and will resume in September. The rink plans to offer freestyle during our usual club ice times so please check the rink schedule for details.

Reminder: There is no club ice on 4/27/11 due to rehearsal for the Spring Show.

Spring Show: The HSC Spring Show is Saturday, April 30th at 5:30 pm. All skaters must be at the rink by 5 pm with skates/costumes on.

Next Board Meeting: There will be a board meeting on May 11th at 7 pm immediately after club ice. All members are welcome to attend.

Hawkeye Skating Club-Updates for 3/8/2011

To all HSC Skaters/Parents/Coaches:

Just a couple of quick updates:

1) The Competition and Test Session went well. Thanks to all who participated, and many thanks to those who volunteered their time to make the event a success.Thanks also to all of you who brought food items in for the hospitality room and to all who provided monetary donations! Special thanks as well to our corporate sponsors: Charley’s Grilled Subs, Panera Bread, and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

2) There will be club ice this week (Wednesday 3/9) but there will NOT be club ice next week (Wednesday 3/16) due to Spring Break.

3) The Spring Show is scheduled for April 30th. I hope to get the registration forms out by the beginning of next week.

2011 HSC Spring Competition and Test Session-schedules posted

Only a few more days until our 2011 HSC Spring Competition and Test Session. By now, all skaters, coaches and parents should have received information about the schedules for the competition and test session. The emails also included information regarding how to sign-up for practice ice. If you did not receive the email, please contact Heidi (president@hawkeyeskating.org) and she will send you a copy.

The competition events will begin Saturday, March 5 at 9:15 am, and will end approximately 5 pm. The test session will begin on Sunday, March 6 at 8:15 am, and tests will conclude no later than 4 pm.

Competition and Test Session Updates

The deadline for the Spring 2011 HSC Competition and Test Session is February 16, 2011. The competition will be held on March 5, 2011, extending to March 6 if needed, and the test session will be held on March 6. We will be holding dance tests as part of our test session. We are having some technical issues with posting the announcement and the application forms on our website, so if you would like a copy of the announcement and/or registration forms for the competition and test session, please send an email to president@hawkeyeskating.org and I will send you the forms directly via email. Please accept our apologies for the technical issues we are experiencing. We are trying to get them resolved as quickly as possible!

Hope you can join us for the competition and/or test session.

For those of you that are on Facebook, please note that thanks to our club secretary, Burton Powley, we now have a Hawkeye Skating Club group on facebook. You can view the competition announcement and application forms on that facebook page, and though you cannot print them directly from there, you can copy and paste them from that location into an appropriate word processing program and then print them from there.

HSC Club Ice Update-December, 2010

Just a reminder that we will have our last club ice session of December on 12/15/2010. There will not be club ice on 12/22 or 12/29 due to the holidays. Check the rink’s web site or their posted schedule for public skate and freestyle times during the holidays. Club Ice will resume on Wednesday, January 5, 2011.

HSC Holiday Show Update

To all HSC Members:

Thanks to all the skaters and others who played a part in making the 2010 HSC Holiday Show a great success! Despite the typically uncooperative weather, we had a great turn-out from skaters and spectators alike! There was a nice article and a photo in the Iowa City Press Citizen this morning. I have attached a link to the article below, and I’ll post a copy at the rink when I am there later this week.

Many, many thanks to all who helped with the show this year. Special thanks also to:

Burton Powley for choreographing the finale and for serving as Master of Ceremonies/Announcer and for program design
Brian DeCoster and Big Ten Rentals for providing the great sound system for the show this year
Kentucky Fried Chicken of Iowa City for sponsoring the program printing
Sharon LeRette for playing the music
Yukiko Hill and Eva Benedek for help distributing programs
Dan T. and others who helped set up and take down decorations
Eric Hoffman, for stepping in as videographer on short notice when Sergei was unable to do so
Sue Reeves, for all she did to help with the show and for stepping in as the announcer for the latter part of the show
Sonia Flanegan and Mary Ann Koder for serving as ice monitors and keeping the show running smoothly

HSC Updates for Week of 12/5 plus HOLIDAY SHOW INFO!

Holiday Show Reminders
This is a busy time for our club, as our Holiday Show “Winter Ice” will be taking place on Saturday, December 11th from 5:30-7:00 pm at the Coral Ridge Ice Arena. Immediately following the show, there will be a public skating session with luminaries and a live band, Crossroads, featuring one of our fellow skaters. We have a great show planned for this year, with over 30 numbers comprised of solos, duets and small groups. Many thanks to our secretary, Burton Powley, who has spent a considerable amount of time this week designing the program for the show, planning the running order and designing publicity materials. Thanks also to Sue Reeves who has provided tremendous asssitance in coordinating the Learn To Skate components of the show, and to Todd Garrison and the Coral Ridge Ice Arena for donating the ice time for the show. Thanks also to all the coaches who have been working with Learn to Skate groups and with their own students to prepare for the show.

All individuals performing in the holiday show must be at the rink on Saturday, December 11 by 5 pm with skates and costumes on!

Also, for those performing in the show, please remember there is a rehearsal on Wednesday, December 8th. Please note the rehearsal will start promptly at 5 pm (slightly later than previously announced on our web site). Please be at the rink and ready to skate promptly at 5 pm. The rehearsal will end no later than 6:45 pm. We will be rehearsing small group numbers and the finale number, and will allow soloists the opportunity to rehearse if time allows. Soloists should bring their CDs to turn in on Decmeber 8th as well.

Club Ice
Due to the rehearsal on 12/8, there will not be club ice this Wednesday, December 8th.
We will have our normal club ice on Wednesday, December 15th
We will not have club ice on Wednesday, December 22 or on Wednesday, December 29th.
Club Ice will resume on January, 5, 2011

Gift Wrapping FundraiserWe still need volunteers to assist with gift wrap at the Coral Ridge Mall on 12/24/2010 between 1-5 pm. If you are able to help either from 1-3 pm or from 3-5 pm (or anytime in between), please email Sharon LeRette (vicepresident@hawkeyeskating.org). Sharon is our Club Vice-President and is coordinating our volunteer scheduling for this gift wrapping fundraiser. This gift wrapping session is our primary fundraiser for the club so we hope a member of each club member’s family will be able to volunteer. Many thanks to those of you who have already indicated your availability.

Save the Date-Spring Competition and Test Session
We are planning a non-qualifying competition and a USFSA test session for Saturday, March 5 and Sunday, March 6. A formal announcement will come out soon, once we’ve secured our officials and our sanction from USFSA.
