I am aging myself when I make references to 60’s musicals. Age not withstanding, the 42-23 Atlanta Hawks fly north tomorrow night to take on the 7-59 lottery bound New Jersey Nets. New Jersey has played Atlanta twice this season, losing both times at Philips Arena. This will be our first trip to the Izod Center in East Rutheford. On December 13th Atlanta pounded the Nets 130-107. The Hawks had seven players in double digit scoring that night, and dominated with 51 rebounds. On January 6th, at Philips Arena the Hawks out gunned New Jersey 119-89, cashing in on 13 of 22 from three-point-land. The Hawks currently hold down 3rd place in the Eastern Conference standings, one game ahead of Boston.

It wasn’t pretty near the end, but the Atlanta Hawks held on when they needed to last night, beating the slumping Detroit Pistons 112-99 at Philips Arena. The Hawks surged to a 28 point half time lead, turning thirteen Detroit turnovers into twenty three points. The Hawks pounced early and often, leading 30-12 after the first quarter. They then went on and outscored the Pistons by ten points in the second quarter, leading 69-41 at the half. It was by far Atlanta’s best shooting game of the season. It had all the trappings of a classic blow-out, until the Pistons went on a 10-1 run late in the third quarter. Detroit had the lead down to nine points, 96-87 with 6:45 remaining in regulation, before Atlanta surged in the final few minutes outscoring them 16-12. Joe Johnson scored seven of Atlanta’s final eleven points, and finished with 26 points and 5 assists. Josh Smith had 18 points and 11 assists to go along with 5 steals. Center Al Horford had 15 points and 7 rebounds. Super-sub Jamal Crawford had 17 points, 6 assists and was 3-3 from 3-point land. Jason Maxwell’s 19 points and 12 boards were tops for Detroit. Richard Hamilton had 18 points, and Will Bynum 17. Atlanta now leads the Boston Celtics by 1/2 game for the 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. The Hawks travel to New Jersey Tuesday night to play the 7-59 Nets.

The Atlanta Hawks play host to the Detroit Pistons tonight at Philips Arena. The Hawks remain tied with the Boston Celtics for third place in the Eastern Conference standings, with identical 41-23 records. With only eighteen games remaining on the regular season schedule, Atlanta is looking to build some momentum heading into the playoffs. Five of the Hawks next six opponents have records hovering near .500 or below. Even though Atlanta has a great won loss record, they have looked less than hungry in some recent close game losses. With the playoffs looming, now would be the perfect time to build some intensity. The Pistons have won only seven road games this season, and have not beaten the Hawks in Atlanta since February of 2008. The Hawks are looking to extend their current home game win streak to four in a row.

The Atlanta Hawks ended their modest two game losing streak, with a 105-99 win in Washington D.C. on Thursday night. Led by Jamal Crawford’s team high 29 points, the Hawks put away the 21-41 Wizards. Turnovers by Washington, 21 overall, and tenacious three point shooting by Atlanta 8 of 17, each time Washington would pull close was the story of the game. The Wizards kept relatively close, because they out rebounded the Hawks 42-29, and shot 90% from the foul line to Atlanta’s dismal 60%. Washington was led by Andray Blatche’s 30 points and 9 rebounds. While JaVale McGee pumped in 20 points with 9 boards. Jamal Crawford was clearly the feature story on this night. Washington, had tied the score at 66-66 in the third quarter, when the Hawks went on a 19-7 run. Crawford scored twelve of Atlanta’s thirteen points during the closing minutes of the quarter, hitting a big three pointer with 3:37 remaining, then coming back with another at the the 3:02 mark. Atlanta led by six 79-73 going into the fourth quarter. The Hawks seemed a step ahead defensively the entire night. Joe Johnson and Al Horford had 18 points a piece, while point guard Mike Bibby had 16 points, with a huge three at the 3:52 mark in the fourth quarter to pretty much ice the game. The Hawks return to Philips Arena, where they play the 22-42 Detroit Pistons on Saturday night.

The Atlanta Hawks fly into our nations capital tonight, with one goal in mind. To come away with a resounding victory. No spin, no hype, just forty eight minutes of solid effort, until the final buzzer sounds. It is time for Atlanta to turn it up a notch, in their quest to wrestle back the number three ranking in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics and the Hawks are tied, with identical 40-23 records. Atlanta is looking at two straight tough losses their rear view mirror, as they seek to bounce back against the 21-41 Wizards, losers of four straight. Atlanta’s next four games are against teams either under .500 or hovering around that mark. At times recently Atlanta has looked clueless on defense, and listless on offense during the fourth quarter of some close games. Its a great opportunity for the Hawks to right that ship. Lets hope they keep dancing tonight until the music stops. Atlanta returns home after their stop in D.C. to play Detroit on Saturday night.

The New York Knicks beat the Atlanta Hawks for the third time this season, winning last night at Madison Square Garden 99-98. Al Horfords last second shot went in, but replay showed it was a tenth of a second too late, following Wilson Chandlers block of Josh Smith’s last second effort. Danilo Gallinari led all New York scorers with 27 points, hitting four of five from three point land. Josh Smith had 25 points with 10 boards, and 6 assists to lead Atlanta. Joe Johnson had 22 points. The Knicks clearly outplayed, and out shot the Hawks all night. The Hawks beat them on the boards 43-38, but that was about it. New York shot .506 to Atlanta’s .425 from the floor. They won from the charity stripe .846 to .778. They shot 10 of 17 to Atlanta’s 3 of 17 from beyond the 3 point arc. Atlanta has two days to off, before heading to our Nations Capital to face the Wizards. The Hawks have won both meetings with Washington this season. Lets hope Atlanta they can dish out some capital punishment, to end their two game losing streak.

The Atlanta Hawks head to Madison Square Garden tonight, to take on the New York Knicks. The Knicks have beaten the Hawks twice this season in Atlanta, with two strong fourth quarter runs. The last one on New Years Day in overtime. The Hawks only win against the 21-41 Knicks was back on November 11, when they bested the New Yorkers 114-101 in the Garden. The Hawks could definitely use a couple road wins this week, before returning home to play the Pistons on Saturday. The Hawks next four games are against teams with under .500 records. The Hawks have to find a way to avoid their fourth quarter meltdowns. This cruise, then lose scenario is getting old. Atlanta needs to keep the pressure on teams for forty eight minutes instead of forty, a necessary step if they want to be ranked among the elite in the NBA.

Dwayne Wade’s thirty eight points and Michael Beasley’s twenty two, were too much for the Hawks to overcome, as they fell to the Heat 100-94 in Miami Saturday night. The Hawks led 92-91 early in the fourth, when Beasley went on a tear. His fourteen fourth quarter points, and two key steals in the final two minutes, closed out the Hawks. Atlanta’s super sixth man Jamal Crawford led all Atlanta scorers with twenty four points. Joe Johsnon had twenty points, and Josh Smith pumped in seventeen. Center Al Horford had ten points and nine boards. The Heat have beaten the Hawks three out of four this season. The Hawks head to Madison Square Garden, to play the 21-41 New York Knicks on Monday night. The Knicks have beaten the Hawks two out of three games this season. The fourth quarter has been the Achilles’ heal for Atlanta all season long. They definitely need to pick up their fourth quarter play the rest of this road trip. Atlanta is battling the Celtics for the number three slot in the Eastern Conference.

Point Guard Mike Bibby picked a good night to register his season high in scoring. With leading scorer Joe Johnson feeling under the weather thanks to the flu bug, the rest of the team picked up the slack. The Hawks had six players in double figures. Bibby scored his season high 23, Josh Smith 29, Al Horford 27, with 15 boards, and Jamal Crawford 14, twelve of those coming in the final quarter to help hold off the pesky Warriors. Golden State played tough all night. They were 35-35 after the first quarter, and tied 63-63 at the half. The Hawks pulled away to a four point lead after three quarters. Golden State got within two at 104-102 with 6:56 left to go. They got within one point at 119-118 with 49.6 seconds to go, but the Hawks went eight for eight from the foul line to ice the victory. It was Atlanta’s fourth win in a row, and sixth in their last seven games. They will need all the momentum they can muster, as they go into Miami tonight to face a Heat team that has beaten them two out of three this season.

An injury riddled Golden State Warriors team visits Philips Arena tonight for the third installment on their five game road trip. Golden State lost in Miami on Tuesday night, and in Orlando on Wednesday. The Hawks are 39-21, third overall in the Eastern Conference and two games behind Orlando in the Southeast division. Atlanta is looking for its fourth win in a row. They are also looking to avenge their loss to Golden State less than two weeks ago when they led by 18 points in the third quarter, only to let the game slip away in the fourth. The Hawks are averaging 111 PPG in their last three home games while only giving up 95. Lets hope that trend continues tonight. Joe Johnson, Jamal Crawford, Marvin Williams and Josh Smith have all been hot of late. Tip off is 7:30 p.m. EST don’t miss it.
