First Triple Header/Past Players Lunch

This Saturday will be the first triple header of the season at Rathmines, with the Club 18 taking on Richmond Central Cardinals at 9:20, followed by the Reserves (11:40) and Seniors (2pm) battling Ivanhoe.

The Past Players Luncheon will be on during the reserves game, kicking off at midday and running until the start of the senior game. For tickets, please call Rude on 0410 332 745.

Hawks At The Glenferrie Rd Festival

On Sunday after suffering a defeat at the hands of UHS-VU and drinking too many cocktails at the Cocktail Night, The Hawks boys fronted up at the Glenferrie Road Festival to run a BBQ outside the Hawthorn Telstra Store. With over 20,000 people expected to the Festival, this was a great opportunity to showcase our club to the local area.

Selling snags for a gold coin donation, the stand was reasonably busy all day, even with the competition of 4 BBQ’s operating within 50 metres of us! Dave Tremewen ensured our snags were the most popular, standing out in the street talking to all the festival goers and convincing them they looked hungry!

We had Tony Abbott visit the stand and tell us what a great job we were doing, but didn’t buy a snag because he’s watching his weight! Gold 104 were also there doing an outdoor broadcast and Pat was interviewed live on radio about the club and the season ahead.

Special thanks must go to Paul Spooner and his staff at the Telstra Store Hawthorn located at 698 Glenferrie Rd for allowing us to run the BBQ for the day, and Jigzy, Stribbles and Cobbs at Glenferrie Gourmet Meats, 720 Glenferrie Rd, for donating the snags! Also to Dave Tremewen, Matt Pinkerton, Dave Clancey, Alison Clancey, Georgie Pardalis, Mike Tyson, Pat Clancey, Lachy Chapman and Matty Tanis for organising and staffing the BBQ for the day!

Cocktail Night A Winner

On Saturday night after round 1, the club rooms turned in to a scene out of 80′s classic ‘Cocktail’ for the season opening function. With the girls looking stunning and the guys doing their best, the night was a huge success. With a menu of 23 cocktails, how could it not be?

It was great to see all the new players and their partners enjoying the night, with Ferg celebrating his first game of footy by drinking all 23 cocktails! Good effort mate!

First Round Loss To Slick UHS-VU

The Hawks didn’t get off to the desired start on Saturday, going down to a fit and slick looking Uni High outfit. UHS-VU finished 4th in 2011 and looked to have improved their team further in the off season, injecting some youth through their under 18′s program.

Uni High dominated the first 3 quarters of play holding the Hawks to just 2 goals up to 3 quarter time. It wasn’t until the last quarter that the Hawks showed a bit of fight and started to gel to finish with an 8 goal final term.

We do take some positives out of the game with some of the new recruits looking good and Tremers finding some touch up forward.

Earlier in the reserves match, UHS-VU also took home the chocolates with the reigning premiers continuing on with their 2011 form. Chris Williams was involved in a nasty collision doing quite a bit of damage to his old body, dislocating his collar bone and straining the medial ligament in his knee. We wish Willo a speedy recovery to get back out on the track as soon as possible!

It was great to see the Uni High boys sticking around for a beer after the game! It always seems to be played hard on the field but good times off it against the boys from the Zoo!

Next week we look forward to returning to the Snake Pit (Kevin Bartlett Reserve) for the first time since 2006 to face last years Division 4 runner up, Richmond Central. Hopefully seeing a closer contest and some improvement on last weeks effort!

It All Starts Saturday!

Well it’s finally here! Round 1 week. As always, preseason seemed to drag on for ever, and with the season kicking off a week later than all the other leagues, I’m getting jealous of seeing friends posting on Facebook about their first game!

The Hawks will welcome UHS-VU to Rathmines for the opening clash. The two clubs have built up a good rivalry over the past few years with UHS-VU knocking the ressies out of the finals last year before going on to win the Reserves Premiership. It is always hard to tell how sides will go in a new season, but if history is anything to go by, I’m sure we will see two close games on Saturday.

After the game, we will celebrate the season starting with the Cocktail Night at the club rooms. With beer, wine, sparkling and cocktails from 8 till midnight, this is sure to be a cracker evening! Tickets are on sale now from Andrew Beever, Dave Tremewen or Dave Coghill. Ladies $45, guys $55. Get around it.

Benny Drops In To The Nest

Last week VAFA Head Of Umpiring, Benny Goodman, volunteered his time to come down to Rathmines to say hello to the players and coaching staff and give a talk on umpiring in the VAFA. He had some really interesting things to say about the number of umpires in the game. Numbers have been dwindling over the past few seasons with retirements, guys moving to higher levels and some even returning to play the game.

Benny also threw up a pop quiz to the boys on the rules of the game which most failed miserably!

This helped to point out to a lot of people that the umpires aren’t always wrong! Benny is a good fella who put the role of umpires in to perspective, even admitting that during his playing career, he wasn’t the kindest bloke to umpires! He challenged the Hawks players to introduce themselves to umpires before the game or in the rooms after the game and build a relationship with them. They are all footy lovers like the rest of us, but without them, we don’t have a game. They are simply there to ensure everyone plays within the rules.

The committee, coaches and players would like to thank Benny for his time and wish all the umpires all the best for 2012.

Jumper Presentation This Saturday

This Saturday there will be a training session from midday, followed by an intra club match. Make sure you get down to Rathmines for our last competitive hit out before round 1!

Following the intra club match, there will be a bbq and beers followed by jumper presentations. All players are required to attend. All friends and family are encouraged to attend.

Supreme Effort In Yea

With over 35 blokes unavailable due to crickets trips, work and guys taking their grandmas to the shops, the Hawks travelled to Yea with only 24 players. We had a 6 quarter game scheduled which would be a tough ask in 33 degree heat.
The first 2 quarters would be played against the Yea Reserves and the last 4 quarters against the Seniors.

The first quarter was played at a good pace with the Hawks kicking against the breeze. We tried a few guys in different positions to get a feel for how they would go and went in to the first break up by a couple of points.
The second quarter started with a bang as Tremers and Dan kicked back to back goals. The team had clicked in to gear and started piling on the goals to be up at the end of the 2nd quarter by 10 goals.
That saw the Yea reserves hit the showers while our boys were just getting warmed up.

The Senior game started off at a fairly good standard. Yea had more height than us and were certainly fresher after most of our guys had already played 2 quarters.
It was a tight contest all the way up until just before the main break when the Hawks kicked a couple of goals to take a slender lead in to half time.
The third quarter saw the Hawks hold on to a 2 goal lead most of the way before kicking a late goal on the siren to lead by 17 points at the last break.
The sun beating down and the fact that we had played 5 quarters to Yea’s 3 was starting to show. The sweat was pouring off of sunburnt foreheads, especially on the rangas…
Despite most things going against us, we ran out the game pretty well to eventually take the game out by 7 points in a supreme effort.

The Hawks would like to thank the Yea Football Netball Club for hosting us. A great bunch of blokes who were good to share a beer with after the game.
