I'm so happy to share a bit of weekend sewing I did with my daughter Annie! From a scarf, and a dress, to a pillow, a tablerunner, and more, she's become a pretty accomplished little seamstress. Like many great projects, this next one came to fruition rather spontaneously, the impetus being her emphatic declaration that "Mom, you know I'm the only one in school that doesn't have a snack bag!?" Well, can fix that of course!

Annie dipped into her personal stash (yes, in kindergarten and she already covets her fabric stash!), and selected Medium Chevron in Red from Riley Blake, and Kasbah in Midnight from Amy Butler. Of course, she largely uses her fabric bits for non sewing related projects, often involving copious amounts of scotch tape, her adhesive of choice when time doesn't allow for sewing. Here's a friendly monster she made the remnants of the afternoon. I rather like the use of chevron as teeth and a furrowed brow. Annie explained that "the teeth make her scary but you can tell she's nice because she has pretty hair." Naturally.

For the snack bag, we just made a simple envelope style, making it up as we went along. Annie wanted to make sure we made it big enough because she's starving at school and wants to be sure we have enough room. Not sure how that could be the case as her class breaks for two different snack times, plus lunch. Or, perhaps more likely, she's just taking the opportunity to remind me that she's not always keen on the healthy snacks I give her :)

But I think I'm at least winning back some of her favor, for here she is literally pondering whether she'll now have the coolest snack bag in her grade, and "maybe even the whole school." With her keen fabric choices, I think she may be right.

We used  a bit of velcro as I thought that would be the easiest and quickest method for her to do. As you can imagine, easy and quick is certainly a winning combination for the attention span of a 6 year old. After watching me sew the bottom bit on, I let her sew on the velcro to the top of the envelope, and she did a great job.

And, here it is - the coolest snack bag in her whole school and she made it herself! Now if only I could get her to eat that banana...
