In some cases where it is not reasonable to replace your whole guitar neck it could be that a partial or a full re-fret of the entire neck is necessary. If this is the case or if it is what you prefer, then our Haywire Custom Shop re-fret option is available for just $10 per fret. You can decide or ask for our recommendation to determine if this option is required on your guitar neck.

Fret size has a great deal to do with the action of your guitar. Low frets put your fingertips right on the fingerboard with little room to squeeze the strings out of tune or to get under them for bending. Tall frets are the opposite. The width of the fret determines the amount of wear that can be expected before leveling and re-crowning is necessary. Wider frets wear longer. Narrow frets wear faster. Great Used Guitars on Reverb Too!

Superficial surface finish cracks are prone to all guitars. Importantly, more in used guitars.
Strats tend to crack the paint or finish surface in that exact same spot where the neck meets the body. Used guitars are especially more prone because they have been handled more.
If you bought a guitar that was not listed as Mint, NEW or Perfect
then it’s a used guitar. Ordinary wear and tear and surface cracks are to be expected sometimes, so clearly a surface crack in the body where the neck meets the pocket is a non-issue. Equally important, if a used guitar plays well and sounds good and is in excellent playing condition
why worry?

The “Real Value” of used guitars

Remember-most used guitars aren’t beauty pageant entries, just good possibilities as great playing instruments for you.
You need to ask yourself? Did I buy this guitar to play it or look at it?
When you think nothing about how well it plays but just how it looks it’s not the guitar with a problem.
The real value of a “used guitar” is that it allows a player to have some experience with a higher end instrument without the higher cost.
I really hope as a serious player you try it to determine if it plays well.
Most guitar players are Divas, sure I get it. They are superficial and tend to choose instruments as they would a girl friend.
Don’t do that. It’s a tool. If you buy a used dull tool-then don’t complain…sharpen it!Haywire Custom Guitars neck and profile + back contours for ease of playing.

To an untrained eye-sometimes what may look like an issue is usually not an issue at all.
When paint is stripped from a used guitar body there will be a space where the excessive amounts of paint used to be. For example, the neck pocket.
As a guitar builder-I want some space for my guitar necks to align properly. That is a very important part of a setup later on in the process.

Not every neck fits perfectly tight

When adding a neck to a guitar body there are 4 axis which need to be perfectly positioned. As follows: right, left
and forward and backward neck alignment. If the neck is perfectly aligned on all of those axis-it will play properly.
When buying a used or new guitar that is what to look for.
Look at the string margin space on each side from 1st to last frets between the neck and strings.
Ideally you should see the same amount of neck space from each of the “E” strings to the side of the neck-all the way down.
That will give an indication of the proper alignment to right and left axis. Further, the strings will ride just over top of each pole piece on each pickup. That is another indication alignment is correct.
Not every guitar neck fits perfectly tight with every body. It doesn’t need to.
It just needs to align and play well.

In some cases, a replacement guitar neck is preferable to replacing the entire guitar. First of all, cracking finishes, worn frets and warping fret boards are common ailments of guitar necks. Therefore, replacing a bolt-on guitar neck is often a considerably less expensive option than repairing the damage or replacing the whole guitar.

Your Replacement Guitar Neck -We will do the following:

In performing a 4-axis alignment of the guitar neck your new guitar neck will be checked and adjusted to be true and straight to ensure proper alignment on all 4 axis. This step almost always ensures proper action and allows for more accurate and easier guitar tuning and playing. A full set-up will then be performed in the following steps.
We level and polish the frets to insure that all of the guitar frets are level, eliminating any possibility of fret buzz due to unevenness.
Next, we radius the guitar strings. Since, most guitar necks have a curved contour over the top of the neck called the radius. We adjust the strings to make sure the height of each string. They perfectly follow the contour of your guitar neck. Because, once we determine the contour and then we set the radius of the guitar strings. Next, it’s time to adjust the overall height of the strings from the top of the frets to the bottom of the guitar strings accurately.

In addition, we can re-check the overall guitar string height and the action all while maintaining the radius just created. The truss rod adjustment is then able to be made here. The strings will be parallel all the way down the fret board and neck straight.
Finally, we set the guitar intonation. This step is done twice. The intonation is set two times with a 24 hour “seat-in” period in between to allow the guitar to properly re-seat and settle in with the new adjustments.

What is a guitar setup? Why is it important? Does a guitar need a setup? Where do I get a setup? A setup is a series of adjustments to keep all of the components of your guitar playing right, Working parts in a guitar need balance. In other words, a good setup will make you guitar play great. We adjust the neck, bridge, nut, frets (leveling) pickups, action and intonation. Your guitar needs to play better than it did when it came out of the factory. In guitar tuning, a temperament is a tuning system that slightly
bends to find middle ground to the pure intervals of pure intonation. Most modern musical instruments are tuned in the equal temperament system. So “perfect tuning” is a search never mastered. It’s an ideal never realized in guitar tuning.

“Temperament, in music, the accommodation or adjustment of the imperfect sounds by transferring a part of their defects to the more perfect ones, in order to remedy, in some degree, the false intervals of those instruments, the sounds of which are fixed; as the organ, harpsichord, piano-forte, etc.
Temperament is what the Italians call participatione, or system temperato, because it is founded on temperature; that is, on the diminution of some intervals and augmentation of others, by which it partakes of the diatonic and chromatic systems.” according to Wiki Musical temperament notes.

Perfect Guitar Tuning

Can perfect guitar tuning be achieved? Sorry, it cannot. But we can get very close. It is impossible to place the frets on the guitar so that all notes
on the instrument will be perfectly in tune in every key — simply impossible, because of the way tuning works. However in the shop, when building and setting up guitars, we take all of this into consideration.
Proper intonation is what makes a guitar’s strings play in tune as you fret different notes on the fret board. If the 12th fret note is flat or sharp, your intonation is off. On most electric guitars you can adjust the intonation for each string individually at the bridge with each saddle.

The height of the strings at the nut

Very often, the strings are too high at the nut. As with the action when it is too high, chords will be very difficult to play, particularly near the nut.
Normally, the strings at the nut should barely be higher than the height of a fret.
Locking tuners just make string changes faster and have a cleaner look.
Locking tuners do nothing for tuning stability. Anyone who says they do doesn’t know how to properly wind a string around a traditional tuning peg. What they will do is take a well balanced guitar and make the neck nose dive from the huge extra weight added. Is that what you had in mind?

12-Tone Equal Temperament

12-Tone Equal Temperament guitar tuning is difficult. This is the musical scale which “ordinary” guitars are constructed for – in theory. In reality, the best that can be achieved is a close approximation to Equal Temper.
How do we solve the problem of imperfect guitar tuning? We set the guitar up properly, cut the nut slots just right, radius the strings to the neck. Then we set the action low, lubricate all friction points, set the intonation at the saddles correctly. In addition, and get the action very low, check again to make sure the truss rod is set perfectly. Lastly we tune the guitar with an accurate digital tuner to get to notes dialed in perfectly.

Sometimes adding a new neck can be the better, faster, safer but not necessarily a cheaper option. A guitar neck shave?

We wouldn’t recommend doing it yourself, however if you have a neck that is too large for your hands, clumsy and uncomfortable for you then……….a guitar neck shave may be a better option for YOU. It’s not a “one size fits all” world but most manufacturers only aim for the “average” players hands-not yours. Jimmy Page had the neck shaved on his 1960 Les Paul. Jimmy’s Les Paul was shaved to a slim taper. Sure the nut width may be different on some guitar models from either 1-5/8 to 1-11/16 on electric guitars. Acoustic guitars will sometimes have a wider nut width on the upper wider end such as 1-11/16 to 1-3/4 then to 1-7/8 inches on some models. The necks are generally the same.

What are your guitar playing needs?

Let’s get back to YOU and your hands. If changing the nut width doesn’t do it for you then consider a guitar neck shave. In the realm of professionals it’s and easy job done regularly. We do it every day here in the Haywire Custom Shop. With the high cost of replacement necks in the neighborhood of around $250 ( for a used one) to $500 for a new one maybe the one you have just needs a tweak? What do you think? It’s certainly worth a try especially if your not doing it.

Your neck is then shaved to the specs desired

The cost of a neck shave is very inexpensive compared to a new neck purchase. Consider the benefits. First, you can ship your guitar or just the neck to us, it will arrive in a day or two. We will work on it the day it arrives. The neck will be shaved to whatever specs you request. We always take measurements at the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th 9th and 12th frets upon arrival. Your neck is then shaved to the specs desired. We’ll check the neck for any problems such as twisting and over or under bow as well as fret dressing on the ends if required.

When Guitars Operate Smoothly

The sound, feel and ability to play well. That is what you need from your guitars. When these tasks are accomplished guitars and basses they are greatly improved. It happens when they are set up correctly, the right parts are used and adjustments are exact. Regular maintenance and servicing however is required on your guitars from you. In the case of, truss rods, they need seasonal adjustment to keep the neck straight. They fight a constant battle between pull of strings, truss rods, tremolo systems and humidity. Guitars operate smoothly and in tune when set up properly. If a setup is done right it will match any chosen string gauge.

I can’t think of many disabilities which would affect one’s ability to play a guitar. However, maybe a few because players have walked into the shop with solid and believable complaints regarding the guitars they play. We offer guitars for disabled players.
A deaf person-maybe not. Blindness doesn’t seem to stop anyone from playing. It may even hone the skill better. Guitar players for the most part don’t look at their fingers or their instrument while playing. Musicians like Jose Feliciano, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and Jeff Healey are some examples of overcoming a disability to play guitar. There are players however, who have been playing for years and as age creeps up they can no longer even hold a guitar.

The players sometimes don’t even realize they have a disability. Often times they’ll just take a seat on stage and play. Still others will come in to a guitar shop like Haywire Custom Shop for advice. We’re ready! We got your back, front, sides and anything else that hurts. Why not try and help players get back to “normal” on stage? Great idea! We have clients come in with back and shoulder issues due to heavy guitars. As they hold these guitars standing up for hours on end it can be debilitating as they age.
What do we do? I ask them to play for me. We look at what the possible problems could be. It is almost always the excessive weight of the guitar.
The solution is sometimes as simple as a lighter body. Yes, just strip down the old guitar and re-build it right onto a lighter frame. Their parts, the same parts their used to, but on a lighter body can make all the difference to players with disabilities. If the disability is caused by the instrument then it’s easy to unwind the whole problem and fix it for them. We think about solutions for guitar players all the time. The guitarists don’t necessarily come up with the fixes right away until we suggest ways to reduce weight, thus pain and increase satisfaction on the job.
We help players with disabilities find the right solutions for the problems the face daily. Physical handicaps from the waist down-no problem. It’s the other ones we need to address.

What makes your guitar great? Color, finish, pickups, tuners? Maybe, but most likely not. Great guitars are held by players who really appreciate the parts that add up to quality. This is true however there is a catch. The great guitars are the ones that contain the qualities desired by the player holding the guitar. Huh? What do I mean by that?

What makes great guitars… great?

Simply this. Every player has different ideas on what makes his guitar great. It is very personal. Some players need certain parts to make them feel comfortable using the instrument. For example, a player may need a good tremolo so he can demonstrate his particular techniques. Still others may gravitate to a particular guitar because it has the “action” he desires. Action is defined as the proximity of the strings to the top of the frets. The lower the strings, the closer the action and ease of play is more evident.

My guitar is better ….

Players will often compare their guitar to another and usually say-my guitar is better. Then they’ll list all of the qualities that make it so. What they’re really saying is, “There are qualities in my guitar that I have not found in any other guitar. I am sticking with this guitar until I find another one that plays just like it”. Got it. Keep looking or go to a custom shop.

What is a custom guitar shop?

It’s a place where great guitars a made, adjusted, tapered, tailored and finished to your specs. So, a guitar player has two choices. He can stand in one place and watch as all the guitars slowly go past in his lifetime trying each one until the “ideal” next guitar floats by. The other choice is to ask for what he needs. Since he already has his perfect guitar in hand then all that’s necessary is to duplicate it’s most important and prized qualities. Yes, that’s right a custom shop can measure, extract, compare, duplicate and set up a guitar exactly like the one you play.

Do you have an emergency guitar on hand?

If not, why not? Do you have great guitars or just one? Don’t you have an extra pair of shoes? A spare tire? Do you have spare guitar picks? Strings? Why not a spare guitar in case of emergency? The “Real Value” of used guitars

Remember-most used guitars aren’t beauty pageant entries, just good possibilities as great playing instruments for you.
You need to ask yourself? Did I buy this guitar to play it or look at it?
When you think nothing about how well it plays but just how it looks it’s not the guitar with a problem.
The real value of a “used guitar” is that it allows a player to have some experience with a higher end instrument without the higher cost.
I really hope as a serious player you try it to determine if it plays well.
Most guitar players are Divas, sure I get it. They are superficial and tend to choose instruments as they would a girl friend.
Don’t do that. It’s a tool. If you buy a used dull tool-then don’t complain…sharpen it!

To an untrained eye-sometimes what may look like an issue is usually not an issue at all.
When paint is stripped from a used guitar body there will be a space where the excessive amounts of paint used to be. For example, the neck pocket.
As a guitar builder-I want some space for my guitar necks to align properly. That is a very important part of a setup later on in the process.

Sometimes Sending A Guitar Back For A Small “Tweak” Is Not Always Practical

A Small Truss Rod Tweak Gives Instant Results

Many times when I ship a guitar from the humid deep South to a dry climate the neck sometimes will “hump” up a bit. This will cause what can be described as guitar neck misalignment and sometimes a “string buzz”. The best way to handle it is with a small truss rod adjustment at the head stock. Sometimes sending a guitar back for a small “tweak” is not always practical so here is a short guide to a small truss rod tweak that will give immediate results to a “string buzz” issue. The good news-it only takes a few minutes.

String Buzz

Rick, I’m having one fairly big problem with my guitar. I love the way you set the action so low and I don’t want to change that, but the two lower strings, E and A, are fret buzzing ferociously, especially down near the head stock. What’s the best way to keep the action as low as you set it and still lose the buzz? Filing the frets? Something else?

Hi Jim! Let me see if I can help you with some easy adjustments. It sounds like a hump in the neck is the problem.

You won’t have to loosen the strings as the adjustment to be made is intended to loosen the truss rod. Guitar strings are only loosened for tightening adjustments to the truss rod. As follows……
Sit down with the guitar between your legs looking directly into the truss rod hole at the head stock. Take an Allen wrench and place through the adjustment hole into the truss rod at the head stock and make sure it’s a snug fit. I usually apply a small bit of oil to the end so as to insert and remove it easier.

Now, imagine a clock. Imagine that the Allen adjuster wrench is the large hand and you want to move it back (counter-clockwise) just 10 minutes (a ten minute interval).
After that adjustment– lay the guitar flat on a counter or floor and gently push down in the middle of the neck to loosen the rod inside the truss rod cavity. Almost as if you’re giving gentle compressions to a heart attack victim.
This should work to loosen any “binding” inside the truss rod cavity and allow the upper strings to get over and humped area caused by the differences in humidity. Tune the strings to pitch. Repeat steps as necessary.

Jim-If you need to do it again-remember to go in 10 minute intervals only to avoid over-correction. If you don’t feel comfortable then bring it to someone that you know has some experience in adjusting a truss rod and most likely they can handle it.
This should work nicely! Rick, I took the guitar to a friend of mine this afternoon and he adjusted the neck and lowered the neck pickup just a tad, and I’ve got to say, this is my new go-to guitar! I love the looks, sound, and play-ability! You do awesome work!!!

But wait!!!… Let’s look at a right left neck misalignment issue on your guitar

In the photo is a bass guitar neck and you can see how misaligned it is. You’ll notice with this kind of problem your string is slipping off the edge of the fingerboard. Also there will be more space one one side of the neck end in the guitar body pocket.
What can cause this? Generally from my experience-a rough ride. When a guitar is shipped the delivery guys are way too rough with packages. This is the result of guitars being dropped and thrown around. It is however an easy fix.

How do I fix left to right neck alignment?

Loosen the string tension, and partially loosen the neck bolts in the back of the guitar. Rap slightly or push on the head stock to correct the problem. Hold in place and re-tighten the neck bolts. Very small, almost imperceptible tweaks will result in a surprising results for this type of guitar neck misalignment issue. It is very easy to fix!

Successful musicians consistently do things that unsuccessful musicians are unable, or unwilling to do. As a musician it is your responsibility to learn your instrument. Learn how it works, learn how to adjust and set it up for maximum benefit for you, the player. The learning just begins there.

A player also needs to learn the music, the styles and thoroughly know the content and repertoire. Most importantly, the successful player knows how to get along with the other members in the band. They also have a back-up instrument in case of emergency.
Better yet, each player in a band, trio or group situation should learn enough material to cover a whole night by themselves. Yes, that’s right each player needs to have a whole night of music ready to play. The other members need to learn the tunes as well. So, 4 members equals 4 whole song lists that every other member is completely familiar with as well.

Teach every member in the group your songs and learn theirs. Why?
What if a member or two fails to show for a gig? You already got it covered. Right? No worries. The show must go on. And successful musicians prove it will.

If you want to get asked back to a venue, then do a good job. Show the boss you can handle any situation that arises. Successful bands deliver the goods-always!

Guitar String Buzz

There’s nothing more aggravating than guitar string buzz makes noises it shouldn’t. An issue that comes up often is subject of guitar string buzz. It’s a problem that happens often to players. What is it?
String buzz is caused when a string strikes against the top of a fret. It creates a buzzing sound. There are a few reasons why this occurs from the strings on your guitar:
1. Are you playing the note in the right place?
Watch your technique. See if you’re fretting notes at the right spot behind the fret. If your fingers are too far behind your frets then you’ll hear some unwanted buzzing.
2. Are you striking your strings too hard?
Don’t be rough but be firm with your instrument. If you hit the strings too hard when strumming, it can cause the strings to vibrate up and down too much (as opposed to side to side), increasing the chance of string buzz.

3. Do you apply the proper amount of pressure to the string when fretting your notes?
Make good contact with the frets with the tips of your fingers. Again-this is a technique issue. Are you playing sloppily or clean? Finger strength is important. Are you having trouble playing barre chords? Strengthen your fingers. How? Play more and practice details such as clearly articulating each and every note. Maintain good string contact with the top of each fret.
4. Are the guitar strings too light for your technique?
Look at any new changes in your guitar strings. Have you changed the gauge? If so, this will cause a different tension when tuned up and therefore cause you to have to change your attack. If you cannot adjust then string buzz will occur.

5. Is your guitar new? Has it been properly set-up? Does it have the gauge of string that you normally use? Is the action too low?
With low action comes a trade-off. Super-low action can cause a sring buzz. However, if you can live with it-it is so much easier to play. Not all buzz will translate through an amplifier. So, if slight buzzing occurs when un-amplified, ignore it when plugged in, because you’ll never hear it anyway.
6. Is your guitar is set up properly?
Taking it to a guitar tech can help a lot. Get it set up right.

7. Can the buzzing is caused by uneven frets, an over-bowed or humped neck?
A good guitar tech can tell. He’ll level the frets, straighten the neck and get it right for you.
8. Are the tuner bushings loose?
If so you’ll clearly hear a good amount of buzzing and rattles that can be hard to pinpoint. Check and see if they are tight.
9. Does the string buzz occur when the note is played on and open string?
This will occur when a string “nut” slot is cut incorrectly. It can be fixed by a competent luthier or guitar tech. It sounds much like a “Sitar” effect when the open note is played.

What is the Right Guitar? It takes more than just talent to have successful music career and for a musician be master of an instrument to become fluent in the language of music.

which sounds good enough so I can improve my skills on it“. Very wise words indeed!
Your guitar shouldn’t de-tune much, it shouldn’t sound like an
industrial tuning fork, however it should play properly, fret perfectly and sound angelic. Many new music students who feel they can’t really sound good unless they spend several thousand dollars on gear.

You don’t have to spend crazy money to get a decent guitar.

The right parts for the right player

Indeed, a good instrument will improve your playing not because it looks good but it feels and sounds good! With a great guitar you will be more motivated to play. The best guitar is the one that enables you to get your sound, do what you demand of it, whatever that may be, and feel comfortable. It your best tool.
The practical difference between a “nice” guitar and a top level,
hand built, Axe can be substantial. If you need to have pro
grade gear, get it. Don’t settle for less. The better the instrument, the less you have to fight it. So don’t stress. It’s not part of the job. Play stress-free.
Getting pinch harmonics, adequate gain, workable tone, quietness in the studio and onstage are all important aspects of a great instrument.

Personal preference is the key. When I finally got a great guitar it all felt a little more effortless, smoother and just plain easier. It’s all worth the process.
I need the right guitar for me. Exactly! You play and sound different from anyone else and so should your guitar.
It all boils down to just choosing and using the best guitar that
suits your needs. Price is not always the final determining final factor.
A good guitar tech with great listening skills+an open minded player+verbalization of needs+desire for the perfect instrument = the best possible outcome when finding your ideal instrument.
Guitar sound and play-ability motivates a player to practice more, because it inspires. Top of the range equipment, excellent ideas and implementation designed by the player and tech together will promote and allow everything to happen faster and effortlessly.
