Zariah's Journey

Today I am going to do something I don't normally do. I'm going to lay it all bare...

Growing up I lived in Wainuiomata, that isn't something I normally admit to. I am ashamed that I grew up in a community that is considered poor, before I started High School my family moved away so that I could go to a school where teenage pregnancy and dropping out wasn't the norm. Instead I went to a school where affluence meant influence, a school that taught me that popularity often came as a result of having the things that money can buy.

Over the years I have been trying hard to undo that school of thought, to teach myself that money really can't buy happiness and this week the world I knew as a child has landed on my doorstep, and taught me, beyond anything else, that the world is not about money, the world is about family, love and good health.

Let me explain....

Growing up I had a best friend Jacinda, I spent a lot of time with her and her family, I remember the sleep overs, the water fights and the crazy bike rides around the neighbourhood. One of my first ever crushes was on her brother Joshua and his best mate Jeremy, can't believe I just admitted that!! Anyways... Jacinda's family were close, they had to be, five kids and two adults squeezed into a three bedroom house, you'd be close too!

The family has remained tight over the years, unlike my own and thanks to the advent of Facebook, I have been able to keep in touch with Jacinda and her family despite now living in different cities (and at times different countries).

Last Sunday I received an email from Jacinda's Mum that made me cry, Jacinda's youngest daughter Zariah (she's three) had been diagnosed with Leukaemia and was flying to Christchurch for treatment.

Christchurch hospital is one of the few in New Zealand to offer treatment to young cancer patients, but Christchurch hospital is undergoing repairs at the moment as a result of the massive earthquakes that have been striking here recently. They have been put in a ward with one shower and toilet for everyone, with no televisions in the rooms while the ward they should be in gets repaired.

This means for the next couple of months Jacinda (who is almost five months pregnant) will be separated from her eldest daughter, her extended family and at times her husband Leon, while Zariah is undergoing her treatment. In a city where she knows next to no one.

My heart is simply breaking for the family, all week I've been considering 'How can I help?', and I am no closer now, then I was at the beginning of the week. I know that they don't need the superficial things that I hold near and dear (unless someone out there knows of a company who could sponsor hubby to commute between the two cities for weekends) what they need is emotional support.

So here I am, asking YOU my fans, my followers. Can you help too? Can you offer a message of support? Can you suggest any great websites? Do you know of any great products, for example, what would you suggest to ease the dryness that you get in your mouth during chemo treatment?

I'd really like to get as many comments on this post as possible to pass on to the family.

A teenage Dream...

I have two teenage daughters who always love to add just a little bit of pizzazz to their bedrooms.

I always style their rooms up ‘just pretty’ and then BAM!! Two days later it’s back to clothes on the floor and a whole lotta mess. But anyways – at least the rooms look good for a day if I’m lucky.

I went in search of some inspiration and found a couple of great ideas

I thought I would share. . . cause I like to do that!

Hanging masses of pom poms or lanterns from the ceiling… Brilliance in itself!!

You could add heaps of different colours

Or just different tones of one feature colour…

Instant wow factor and visual/textural interest.

Fairy lights add a whole lotta sparkle…

And I always think handmade wall art is a personal, satisfying and unique way

to add a point of difference to any bedroom. Something like this above is ideal for teenage

girls’ jewellery to be on show (cause they have LOTS of it).

Use basic white frames and fabric or paper that co-ordinates with

other items in the room to give a complimentary feel. Too easy.

I think I might work on the pom poms and frames very soon.

The reddest of all the velvets

This past weekend I celebrate my belated birthday. Hello, 20, how are you doing?! Now, this cake...boy, oh boy. This cake was delicious. And the decorations are so cute (courtesy of my best friend's mother)! It's a basic red velvet with butter cream frosting, but the real treat is the filling: it's raspberry jam! Chocolate AND raspberries?! I know, I'm salivating too.

*Note: all of the decorations are done with fondant. Therefore, they were happily eaten.

For the cake:
3 cups of all purpose flour
1.5 cups of sugar
2 tsp of baking soda
1 tsp of salt
1 tbp of cocoa powder
3 tbp of red food colouring
2 cups of nondairy milk
1 tbp of distilled vinegar
2 tsp of vanilla extract

First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees (the magic oven number because I swear almost every recipe calls for it...and when in doubt this is the number I go to...shh...). Next combine all of your dry ingredients in a bowl and mix thoroughly. After you've done that, add in all of the wet ingredients and slowly combine them to form the batter. Finally, separate your batter into two 8-in. pans or three 6-in. pans and bake for 35 minutes or until a toothpick (or knife) comes out clean. Once you take them out, allow them to cool for about 10 - 15 minutes. This ensures that when you put the frosting/filling on the cake, it won't melt off. I know, longest 10 - 15 minutes ever.

For the frosting:
.5 cup of buttery spread (this recipe has Earth Balance)
3 cups of powdered sugar
1.5 tsp of vanilla extract
2 tbp of nondairy milk
optional: add some food colouring to this if you'd like! 3 - 5 drops.

With a hand or stand mixer, whip the spread until it's fluffy. Then, with the mixer on low, slowly add the powdered sugar. I emphasis slowly because...a mess can happen. Add your vanilla, milk, and food colouring if you decided to do so. Once everything is well-combined, you can up the speed and mix for about 2 - 3 minutes to regain fluffy-ness. If it's too thick, you can add more milk (tbp at a time!).

The filling is regular raspberry jam that you find at your grocery store. But if you are feeling ambitious, you can totally make it from scratch.

To assemble the cake, just remove both (or all three) from their pans and flip them upside down so the flat side is facing up. Spread the jam between the cake layers and then with a knife, or spatula, cover the top and sides with your frosting. Finally, cut yourself a piece! Or eat the whole thing...including the left over frosting...I won't judge.

Today we have Suzie guest posting from Hoots and Kisses a gorgeous page I came across on Facebook a few months ago, and also a very cute blog, I am sure you'll fall in love with her wares as much as I did!

My name is Suzie. I have two children Grace and Joe and husband David. I live on the beautiful Sunshine Coast in Queensland Australia. I am a primary school teacher by trade but have had to give up my part time teaching job to home school Joe and Grace who have severe food and environmental allergies.

I am a bubbly and friendly soul who enjoys a good chat and a cup of tea and some craft time with my friends. As a family we also really enjoy the beach and Dave has been teaching the kids to surf and boogie board and even I have had a turn. We camp at the beach A LOT!!!!!!

Tell us a little about your business...

Hoots & Kisses is a small boutique business specialising in handmade cards, gift tags boxes and in general, pretty paper things. I love making my owls and I guess they have become my signature really. I have a blog that I share all things new in the world of Hoots & Kisses, a Facebook page where I connect with like minded people and I have a Madeit store. I also stock at a gorgeous store called Evelyn Lily (Evelyn Lily offers rental for handmade designers to showcase and sell their designs).

Why did you choose to start your own business?

Hoots & Kisses came about, about ten months ago. I had made and sold a few cards for friends and family and another good friend of mine encouraged me to take it a bit further. I went to a few markets and started the blog and a Facebook page and it has gone from there really. I have just reached my first 100 fans on Facebook and I have many visitors to my blog. I love the personal connection I get with people who visit my spaces and leave comments or hit the 'like' button. It is very warm and fuzzy feeling when people are so encouraging and supportive.

Why did you start crafting?

About two years ago a beautiful and talented friend of mine introduced me to paper crafting. I was hooked from the minute I laid eyes on my first piece of designer paper. My craft has saved my sanity and when I retreat to my craft desk everyone knows that the cone of craft comes down and I am in my happy place. I know that all of you reading this no matter where you live or what you do, understand what I am talking about. I especially love colour and working with colour. It does something to my soul! It makes me a happy mummy and wife which is a very important thing as we all know.

What do you enjoy about working from home?

I love everything about doing what I love and loving what I do. Being able to work from home is such a godsend for me. I am unable to work and to be able to earn an income doing something that I love is a gift. I am so grateful and lucky to be able to do what I do. It is hard to be organised though. I am a free spirit and I really struggle with maintaining structure and routine. I am getting better but I have to work so hard at it.

What makes your business stand out from the rest?

My designs are modern and fresh and very cute (if I do say so myself!). I love that they are simple and not to tizzy, if that makes sense. I also like to think that I offer a personal touch to the business. I want people to feel at home when they visit my blog or face book page. I want people to feel welcomed like old friends.

I also have the ‘awwwwww’ factor. I love it when I show friends, family and clients a new creation and they go ‘awwww, that’s so cute!’, and that is the result I am aiming for. Spreading a little love and happiness! I know it sounds corny but I want my cards to make people feel the same way I feel when I make them.

Do you have any specials? Or bestsellers?

My baby cards with little jumpsuits hung with mini pegs is the most popular seller. My next popular creations are my framed owls. The are soooooo cute. I just love making my owls. They are like a little puzzle of patterns and colours.

Do you have a support network to keep you motivated?

My husband David is sooooooo supportive. I think he likes to see me happy, and 'Hoots and Kisses' makes me happy. He even gives me feedback on the things I make. I know he pretends to be really interested and I think that is so very sweet. He is also quite helpful when I need some feedback on something. The kids are sooooo supportive and they love making cards too. We have some fun together it is great. I have the best friends in the world. I always run designs by them. We actually all can’t wait to share with each other what we have been up to. There is always show and tell whenever we get together. I am one lucky girl!!!

This weekend, hubby and I were busy discussing what car we would buy if we won Lotto, as you do. We decided we would each get a SAAB, I know random choice, but our last car, and our current car were/are Saab's and we have found them to be nothing but reliable.

At first I was a bit dubious, you don't normally see a wanky-dank Saab driving around. So, we googled it...

Here’s to Friends ~ and New York.

I came across this image on Pinterest a while ago now. It is one of those rare photos that seems to haunt me and makes me look at it often. It’s funny how a picture can tell a thousand words and I’m sure an image like this means different things to vastly different people.

To me it tells a story of a close friendship, two girls who can take on a big city. A story where they can dream, share, inspire and laugh not only with but also at each other.

It reminds me of a very dear girlfriend of mine ~ who shall remain nameless but she will know who she is as she reads this post. Let me tell you a story of our friendship.

We met working in retail many years ago now. Right from day one she was so welcoming and chatted away like we had already known each other for a lifetime. I have always admired her skill in making conversation and the way she makes everyone she meets welcome to her world.

We fast became friends and not long after she became engaged to what I know is her soul mate, he is the man she will be with for the rest of her days, that she asked me to be her bridesmaid. I was surprised - she seemed to have so many beautiful and popular friends. Secretly I was chuffed… because she chose me.

Over the years we have had our differences of opinion and one big ole falling out where we didn’t speak for a good couple of years. But even a silly fight can’t keep good friends apart… we got back into the groove pretty quick – like nothing ever happened… Now that’s real friendship isn’t it? And now, even though we live miles apart there is no distance. And I love her cause she introduced me to Gossip Girl! ;)

This picture reminds me of our friendship because she loves New York.

True fans of Hazel Loves Design know how much I love Chanel, all it takes is a look at the {Chanel...} album on Facebook to see how much I lust after the luxury label, the other day I purchased a Chanel Lipgloss! I don't normally wear a lot of make up, but I nearly always go out wearing lipglss, so it made sense to spend money on a quality brand. So it goes with everything I've chosen a nude brown colour (darker than this picture).

So I figured, that this could count as item 98 on my 101 things to do in 1001 days, 'Purchase something Chanel' when I first created this list, I had intended to purchase something slightly more dazzling from their collection, but with my beer budget this is perfect!

Single Serving Blueberry Corn Cake

Funny thing happening here: I was so excited to dig into this blueberry filled square that I almost forgot to take a picture of it! Now that I got that out of the way--and into my belly--we can talk about it.

I think we're into the realm of desserts, but even then I (I mean you) could eat this anytime of day! It's sweet, tangy, moist, and creamy; what dreams are made of, really. And what is even better is that it is a single serving! Unless...you...want...more...? That is totally okay too. Let's get started!

**preheat your oven to 350 degrees

For mini blueberry corn cake:

2 T. of blueberries, fresh or frozen

3 T. whole wheat flour

3 T. corn meal

3/4 c. of liquid. Now, I'm fairly vague here because there are so many choices. Milk, water, fresh fruit juice, a mix--its all up to you! I used almond milk in this specific one.

1/8 tsp of baking soda

1 T. of agave, maple syrup, honey or you can substitute 2 T of plain sugar

- Mix all of the ingredients in an oven-safe dish (make sure to spray your dish with cooking spray!); Place in oven for 10 - 15 minutes

For creamy almond butter sauce:

2 T of almond butter

2 T of almond milk to thin out

1/2 T. of agave

- Place in microwave safe dish and heat for about 30 seconds or until it is all melted

Remove mini-cake and dress in sauce. Enjoy!

Mother of 4 children, model, has published interiors books with David (Island Life and Island Beauty)., Has even hosted a reality tv show… I am in awe!

India has a very defined style herself.

Let’s look at The Cricket Pavillion which was designed by India and her partner David Flint Wood and is situated on Harbour Island.

This property is a beach house and available for rent.

My favourite feature of this kitchen is the use of the fresh greenery.

Nothing says “Island Living”more…

This house is a mix of contemporary and antique all blended with

that breezy Bahamas freshness.

A backdrop of black shutters behind aged timber.

The front veranda.

Guest bedroom.

It seems that David and India’s trademark style in decorating is the use of fresh island greenery indoors.

The Cricket Pavillion is available for rent and I think the feature of this extroadinary property would be the private beach path, thatched cabanas and sunbeds.

Time to spend some time in the kitchen

Every now and again I go through a phase where I spend a whole lot of time in the kitchen. Usually it is baking up a storm, and it only lasts a day or two before the phase passes. This weekend we moved into a bigger home, with a lovely big spacious kitchen, so looking forward to unpacking and taking over the kitchen at some point this week!

I love the colour on the back wall and

I love the idea of a chandelier in the bedroom,

the symmetry in this room creates such a grand formality.

I absolutely ADORE the headboard,

but feel that the foot of the bed should have been a little bit different.

Cuisine from Genesis...

Now, I have a declaration...which might seem a bit odd--if so, forgive me--but breakfast foods are the best foods. No matter the time of day, I could always go for breakfast-y foods (pancakes for dinner are never wrong in my book). I decided to go a sweeter route with quinoa (pronounced keen-wah). This super South American grain is full of vitamins and all of this other great stuff, but the best thing about it in my opinion is that it's a blank canvas for a multitude of flavours. Savory, sweet, I've even seen it used in place of flour in baking--fun stuff right?! Alright, let's get started. You're going to need:

1/4 c. of dry quinoa

1/3 c. of coconut milk

3/4 c. water

1/4 tsp of cinnamon

fruit of your choice (blueberries and mangoes were mine)

optional: nut butters, chopped nuts, dried fruits, nutmeg, vanilla extract, cocoa powder, your kitchen sink...kidding.

I used a rice cooker, but if you don't have one, a small pot will do the trick. Pour the quinoa and water into the pot, turn the rice cooker on or place under medium-to-low heat for about 25 minutes, or the quinoa is tender to your liking. Transfer the fluffy quinoa into your breakfast bowl and pour the coconut milk over it (or condensed milk, if you are feeling extravagant). And finally, chop up or throw in your favourite fruits or any other thing you can think of. This really is a base for anything. Now, eat!

A New Years' Day to remember...

My name is Val and I’m a mum, wife, health professional, novice cake decorator, want-to-be party stylist and the list goes on….. Sometimes I think we are so busy in our lives that we forget that there are very special moments happening around us right now. So my New Year’s resolution is just that, to stop…. and cherish those special moments.

Over Christmas, I heard from two friends, one was pregnant and the other miscarried. I was thrilled for my pregnant friend but my heart ached so much for my other friend and although I will never know the depth of her heart ache, I know what it feels like to want a child so much.

New Years Day this year was a very special day for me; it was my second son’s baptism. Blue eyes is 7 months today and very much a wanted child. Why is it that the success of pregnancy is always celebrated but the challenges of trying to conceive is hidden … almost the black sheep of the family that not one wants to talk about.

My first child, brown eyes (now 3 years old) was conceived relatively quickly (after a bit of help from western medicine) but the Engineer and I tried for many long months (using both western and eastern medicine) before blue eyes was conceived. During that time I went through a rollercoaster of emotions and had many conversations with people who opened up to me about their journey to conceive. Tell me readers, why do we hide so much when as women we need to band together and support each other through one of life’s hardest challenges for a woman? Is it shame? Failure?

Blue eye’s son’s baptism was a day of celebration - to thank God for blessing us with another child and to pray for guidance to raise him as best as we can. The cake I made was specifically picked because I liked the bird topper image I found online (my version is no way as beautiful as Rouvelee’s Creations). The mother and baby bird are nestling and that is exactly how my baby son slept on us when he was born… the anti co-sleeper in me had a bit of learning to do.

Since it was summer, we decided to have a pool party, BBQ and ice cream parlour for dessert (thank you Amy Moss from www.eatdrinkchic.com for your ideas and printables). I had 11 well behaved kids for the whole party desperately waiting for dessert so they could tuck into home made ice cream, cake pops (thank you Angie Dudley from www.bakerella.com for all your inspiration) and of course…. Lollies!

At the end of the day, it was so lovely to relax by the pool with my glass of French bubbles and cherish the moment…. My dearest and closest around me, my ever patient and kind Engineer and yes…. My beautiful children that I am so blessed to have.

Welcome to Things I love Tuesday!

This week I am loving these ADORABLE (actually BEYOND adorable) tea cups from Japan! I wish I could understand the website they came from because I would absolutely love to import some!

I adore this picture above for it's simplistic

referrals to a nautical theme.

Hydrangea’s are prevalent in the Hamptons, so are widely used

in a Hamptons Theme Interiors styling.

Becoming so popular for weddings...

These colours are stunning together!

These flowers look magnificent in any kind of

pot or vase. The even look amazing in a simple glass jar,

and can be used in any décor, from rustic to elegant.

Do you remember hydrangeas from your childhood days?

I remember them from my grandmother's garden,

they were blue.

And today, as adults, we are falling in love with them again.

There are so many new varieties and they are growing in lower

temperatures too.
