One of the most in-demand careers in today’s job market, nursing is a very popular career choice. Thanks to the disproportionate ratio of qualified graduates to job opportunities, most graduates from nursing programs enjoy near-immediate employment which is typically quite secure.

Deciding on the Right Program for You

There are several different levels of nursing programs. Understanding these levels will help you make the best decision regarding your career. Remember that many students begin with a lower-level degree and, as finances allow, later advance their career by obtaining a higher degree.

Nursing degrees are available at Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate levels. While there are twelve-month courses available which qualify graduates to become Licensed Practical Nurses, these are generally regarded as stepping-stones toward a higher degree. In addition, more hospitals, clinics and doctors are choosing to only hire nurses with a Bachelor’s degree or higher, making it a smart career choice to enroll in the highest level of nursing program available. If finances are an issue, meet with a guidance or career counselor to learn about grants, scholarships and other forms of financial aid.

Highest-Paid Nursing Degrees

According to recent salary studies, the highest-paid nursing position is Head of Nursing (at a hospital or large clinic). This position requires an RN degree, at least 15 years of experience and, depending on the hiring company, potentially an MBA. Nurse Anesthetists, Nursing Directors, Certified Nurse Midwives and Certified Nurse Practitioners (specialized) are also among the current highest-paid nursing positions. These positions all require some degree of specialization, whether in a particular field of medicine or in business, in addition to years of relevant experience and, in most cases, specialized certification testing.

The following is a state-by-state list of HBCUs which currently offer nursing programs. Remember that requirements, accreditation and offered programs are always changing; check with each individual school before applying.

As they begin their search for a college, many students are confused by the term ‘liberal arts school.’ This is an often-used phrase, and many colleges fall under the liberal arts umbrella. However, it’s not a phrase which is clearly defined to many high school students.

The liberal arts have an interesting history. As far back as ancient Greece, these areas of study were those considered essential for each citizen. Traditional areas of study include language, literature, history, philosophy, psychology, mathematics and science. The term ‘humanities’ is often used interchangeably with ‘liberal arts.’

There are several advantages of liberal arts colleges. They generally have smaller class sizes than other types of colleges, which allows closer communication between educators and students. They are typically residential colleges, with students living either on-campus or in nearby college-affiliated housing. This in itself is viewed as part of the educational experience, as most students are living away from their parents for the first time. In today’s academic world, liberal arts colleges traditionally encourage students to pursue liberal arts studies for the first two years of their college career, allowing them a full and broad education before declaring a major. These three attributes are considered to make or define an institution as a liberal arts college, although there is a good deal of flexibility on each defining aspect.

Liberal Arts HBCUs

The following is a sample list of the ten HBCU liberal arts colleges in the United States. The list was compiled by cross-referencing the top-ranked HBCUs in the country with their individual focuses on a liberal arts education.

Spelman College – Atlanta, GA

Spelman is an all-female college, offering students a very unique education. Spelman has long been recognized as the best all-female HBCU in the country, as well as one of the top HBCUs overall. Perhaps not surprisingly, admissions at Spelman are known to be rather selective.

Morehouse College – Atlanta, GA

The second-ranked liberal arts HBCU is an all-male school, creating an ideal counterpart for Spelman College. Morehouse is also considered one of the top HBCUs in the United States as well as one of the best liberal arts colleges. Morehouse is known for its selective admissions process.

Xavier University of Louisiana – New Orleans, LA

With its campus in the historic Gert District of New Orleans, Xavier University has a long history as a liberal arts college. It is also the only current HBCU Roman Catholic college, providing a unique blend of Catholic values with top-notch education. The college is noted for its selective admissions process.

Bennett College – Greensboro, NC

Founded in 1873 with the purpose of educating newly freed slaves, Bennett College is another all-female liberal arts HBCU. Bennett accepts an average of sixty percent of applicants.

Claflin University – Orangeburg, SC

Having been founded in 1869, Claflin has the distinction of being the very oldest HBCU in South Carolina. Another school with highly selective admissions, Claflin has long been regarded as one of the top liberal arts HBCUs in the country.

Dillard University – New Orleans, LA

Having also been founded in 1869, Dillard University offers the appeal of Greek life (sororities and fraternities) combined with a strong HBCU heritage and an impressive ranking in the top liberal arts HBCUs. Dillard is very selective in its admissions process, with admissions averaging fifty percent of applicants.

Johnson C. Smith University – Charlotte, NC

JCSU is a private HBCU that was founded in 1867, and prides itself on diversity among its students and faculty that comes from around the world. The University has been ranked several times by U.S. News and World Reports as one of the best comprehensive colleges in the South.

Kentucky State University – Frankfort, KY

Founded in 1886, Kentucky State University is known for its strong laboratory research and community ties. The university has been ranked among the Best National Liberal Arts Colleges, Tier 2 in 2013, and named one of the Best Colleges in the Southeast by Princeton Review in 2010.

Lane College – Jackson TN

Lane College is a small private HBCU founded in 1882, and is affiliated with Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Lane provides a liberal arts curriculum that offers baccalaureate degrees in the Arts and Sciences. The university is known for its management, business, and criminal justice programs.

Rust College – Holly Springs, MS

Rust College was founded in 1866 and is one of the oldest of the HBCUs affiliated with United Methodist Church. It is also the second oldest private college in Mississippi. The college provides its students with a variety of academic programs, including humanities, social and behavioral sciences, natural science, business, technology, and education.

When choosing a degree, it’s nearly always in a student’s best interest to strive for the highest level of education possible. In many fields, a doctoral degree is considered standard. In others, it is not yet standard but is always considered as an asset when hiring. In addition, many industries have begun to require or prefer doctoral degrees where, once, only a Bachelor’s degree was needed.

In virtually every situation, if a doctoral degree is not required, it’s certainly a huge asset to a student both as they begin their career and throughout their lives. The following is a list of HBCU schools currently offering doctoral programs, as well as a quick review of which programs are offered at each school.

Mother’s Day is fast approaching. It is the best time of the year to show your love for your mother by treating her to a special dinner or giving her an expensive gift. But what if you don’t have enough financial resources for something fancy during this memorable day? Don’t fret because you can still make your mom happy even if you’re broke.

Mothers need to know and feel they’re still love and appreciated even if their children are already in college. Therefore it’s only normal for them to look forward to Mother’s Day because they know it is one of those times in the year that they are remembered. So if you don’t have the money to splurge on something expensive for your mom, here are some cheap ideas to make this day special for her.

Creative e-Gifts

If you don’t live in the same city as you mom, and you’re looking for creative and cheap gifts that can be sent online – check out fiverr.com. For $5 you can send mom a caricature from a photo, a personal ‘scrabbleized’ video message, a personalized t-shirt design, or even have someone sing and record a song with your lyrics to name a few.

Here is an example $5 Mother’s Day gift on fiverr.com. Be sure to check the estimated delivery date.

Movie Treat

Surprise your mom with tickets to the latest flicks. She won’t admit it but some alone time with you in the dark theater is just what you need to rekindle that special bond between you two. Order drinks and a huge bucket of popcorn and it will feel like old times. Most importantly, it won’t cost you much.

Picnic for Two

Do you have a nice park near your home? If yes, then pack up a picnic for you and your mom. Prepare her favorite snack and look for the best spot where you can have privacy. You can make your time together even more worthwhile by extending your little picnic until evening so you can both watch the stars appear in the dark night sky.

Artistic Options

Too broke to even get your mom a card? Well, no need to worry. All you have to do is squeeze your creative juices and gather your art materials. Look for colorful construction papers and colored pens. Using these stuffs, make your own Mother’s Day card. You can also be more artistic by adding a splash of glitter, buttons, and other arts and crafts materials. Of course, don’t forget to write something heartwarming inside your card.

Another creative option is to make your own gift for your mom. For instance, you can make her a bead bracelet with a matching necklace. You can also recycle some old small cardboard boxes and turn them into jewelry boxes to go with your own handmade jewelry.

Mothers will appreciate anything you will make or do for them during Mother’s Day. Remember, it’s always the thought that counts and not the price.

Are you older than the average college student and thinking of going back to school? After military service, many students find themselves older than their classmates and facing challenges that younger students don’t have to deal with. Your military scholarship should relieve some of the financial stress of going back to school, but you’ll need to learn how to manage your time and create your support system. Read on for tips to succeed as a mature student.

Ask Questions

While your first instinct might be to “not make waves,” make sure you don’t fall into the trap of keeping your mouth shut even when you’re confused. Whether you’re doing a certification course or a full degree program, don’t be shy about raising your hand and getting clarification from the instructor. Asking your peers questions is also a great way for you to bond with your classmates, even if you worry that the age gap will be tough to bridge.

Be Organized and Take Notes

For most students who have done military service, focus and discipline are now second nature. These attributes will help you immensely in your new career as a student. However, attending class regularly, listening carefully to instructions and turning in assignments on time are not enough. You’ll need to develop an organizational system for your lessons — managing your time when you have a full load of classes might take getting used to — and you’ll also need to develop your note-taking skills for class. Many mature students find recording their course sessions for reviewing later can come in handy and even saved them when studying for exams.

Schedule Carefully

As a student, you’ll be in control of your schedule. This is both good and bad for older students who are used to working a schedule set by a supervisor. It’s important to remember that your time commitment to your studies does not stop at the classroom door; most university-level classes will require about three hours of homework or reading for every hour of time you spend with an instructor. Diploma courses may be even more time-intensive, especially when so much information is being packed into a short-term course. Before you start your studies, talk to the admissions department at your target institution to find out what a typical time commitment is for the kind of courses you want to take.

Have a Study Buddy

When we watch TV shows or movies about going back to school, the storylines often focus on parties, class discussions and the lifelong friendships formed with peers. All of these are important elements of your student experience, but what popular culture doesn’t show is that studying also involves a lot of alone time. You may be spending hours late into the night and on weekends reading textbooks or getting practical experience. If you’re used to working in a team environment, like many in the military, going back to school can feel suddenly isolating. Find a study buddy from one of your classes or through a student group for other veterans. Just having someone across the desk from you is a great motivator when it’s time to hit the books.

Get Your Friends and Family on Your Side

A study buddy will help you when you’re at school, but when you’re at home you’ll need your family’s assistance. Tell everyone who is close to you what your goals are and ask them to encourage you if you start to feel unmotivated or stressed out. If you are married and have children, or are looking to get married soon, be sure to talk to your partner about what kind of time commitment your studies will take and what the impact will likely be on your home life.

Use the Tools You Have

Think about the skills you have developed in your military career and how you can apply them — or the philosophy behind them — to your new job as a student. You may be surprised at how many of these skills, like teamwork, are transferrable. Additionally, you should take advantage of any programs, support networks or technological aids your school offers. Always be on the lookout for a new way to benefit from your surroundings and your experiences

Have Fun

Finally, don’t let student life get you down. You might be under pressure as a mature student but your hard work will pay off in the long run. Make sure you schedule in some breathing room so you can step back and realize you are on track to meet your goals. If your schedule allows it, take some classes that interest you, even if they’re not required for your diploma or course. Have fun with your studies and remember you’re doing it for you.

In a troubled economy, it’s the lower and middle classes that suffer the most. Currently 7.7 percent of the US adult population is looking for work and unable to find it — and that’s not even counting those who’ve given up. It can be frustrating, especially considering how you’re probably following the surefire job search recommendations: treating the job search like a full-time job, networking through connections, etc. Suref

ire isn’t always so sure in a floundering economy, so you must do what you can to cope.

Get an Advanced Degree

A tool like an online MBA program resource gives you an overview of higher education’s benefits. While not for everyone — it involves additional expenses — an advanced degree can increase your job prospects as well as your potential salary. The ability to earn a degree online means you can do it on your schedule, at a place convenient for you, even as you continue to look for a job, work a minimum-wage job or take care of your family.

Consider what kind of career you’d like to have. If you’re having difficulty getting hired, the jobs may be going to candidates with master’s degrees. Set yourself apart with a master’s degree of your own. By the time you finish the program, hiring in your field could increase.

Rework Your Resume

If you’re having difficulty getting to the interview stage, it could be something in your resume or cover letter that isn’t properly showcasing your strengths. There’s more competition for positions so you need to do what you can to stand out right from the start. Get an outside opinion and a professional one if possible.

There are a number of free resources available for resume and cover letter help, including the career services center of your college or high school, the library and workshops presented via the unemployment office. Even if you didn’t attend a local college, you can request help from a tutor for a fee.

Volunteer

If you’ve exhausted your connections looking for open jobs, it’s time to make new connections. Volunteer in your local community; you’ll meet new people in a professional setting and these people can refer you to paying work. Sometimes volunteering with a nonprofit organization for a while can even lead to a paying job on staff.

At the least, the volunteer experience boosts your resume, gives you more to talk about in job interviews and keeps you busy, distracting you from those negative feelings that come with job search failure.

Remind Yourself of Success

It’s easy to become negative when you do your best and don’t succeed. But if you’re doing your best, it’s not your fault. Negativity can lead to depression and anxiety, which can impact your physical health. Remind yourself of your successes daily:

Praise yourself for getting to the interview stage.

Pat yourself on the back for finding new jobs to apply for.

Reward yourself for a day spent volunteering.

Remind yourself of your talents and strengths, and why you’d make a great employee.

Don’t Give Up

It’s much harder to get back into any difficult task if you take a prolonged break, and that certainly applies to the job search. Many people have given up entirely, but scrimping by on meager savings, debt and assistance is no way to live a happy, fulfilling life. Don’t take more than a day or two off from the job search at any time, no matter how discouraged you become.

The best way to cope with job search failure is to consider getting an advanced degree, seek help reworking your resume and cover letter, make connections and keep busy through volunteering. Also, remind yourself of your successes daily and don’t let yourself give up. Wherever possible, allow friends, family and professionals to assist you. Above all, remind yourself you’re not alone in the frustrating job search that goes hand in hand with a troubled economy.

If you’ve never had the pleasure of sampling Terrance Williams’ work, do yourself a favor and head over to terrancewilliams.bandcamp.com. This up-and-coming musician is multi-talented, drawing influences from a sweeping range of musical influences and sampling R&B, hip-hop and electronica, to name just a few, in his current single, Awkward Turtle (We’re In Trouble!). Williams’ is set to independently release his highly anticipated fourth mixtape Hieroglyphics Act II: The Adventures of Captain BES via free digital download on May 1, 2013.

In Williams’ press release he states: “I want to make music that revolutionizes the mind” when asked about the project. He goes on to say: “Hieroglyphics Act II’ was inspired by the film ‘School Daze’ as well as his own life and college experiences.” Musically and topically the mixtape covers much ground ranging from social themes of consumerism and poverty to lighter, feelgood themes that involve good food and good friends.

In a recent interview with HBCU Lifestyle, Williams opened up about his early school experiences, his musical influences and the message he wishes to convey through his work, along with his plans for the future.

Educational Background

Williams attended a KIPP charter school in North Carolina, giving him a very different background from many students attending HBCUs. His middle school and high school experiences left him “tired of it socially,” and Williams dropped out before completing high school. However, the drive toward higher education was always present in his mind.

Knowing that a local college was his best choice, Williams applied to Bowie State, Coppin State, Morgan State and Howard University. Despite a spotty attendance record, Williams’ SAT scores were extremely high, and he eventually attended Morgan State, the first school to reply with an acceptance letter.

When he arrived at Morgan for his orientation, Williams relates that the experience was a life-changing one, calling his HBCU experience “the most amazing thing that God ever created.” He relished the freedom that freshman year represented and the opportunities to meet new people. Looking back, he says that he can clearly imagine the excitement which charges every new class of freshmen, on their own for the first time without parents watching their every move. Even though Williams’ road to college wasn’t the most traditional, it sounds as if he wouldn’t trade the experience for the world.

Musical Influences

When asked to list his musical influences, which apparently grace the walls of his apartment, Williams has to laugh – the list is undoubtedly too long to recall. He does an admirable job, however, rapidly firing off over forty of the most influential names in music history. His wide range of influences is even more admirable, including artists as musically diverse as Sam Cooke and Tupac Shakur, Billy Holiday and Aaliyah, Smokey Robinson and A Tribe Called Quest. It seems as though a little bit of everything has gone into the creation of Williams’ unique style, and his songs clearly reflect the deep pool of inspiration from which he’s drawn of the years.

Current Plans

Williams’ current single is off his latest mix tape (which he admits is much more of an album in content and style), Hieroglyphics Act Two: The Adventures of Captain BES. Williams’ relates the name of his most recent project was gleaned from ancient Egyptian lore, with BES representing the Egyptian god of music. The unique name has a double meaning, also being Williams’ own acronym for the Black Education Struggle.

When asked of his plans, Williams is as broad and far-ranging as his sound. He talks about his desire to finish school as well as to become involved with organizations promoting LGTB rights, human rights and his community as a whole, including the promotion of African-American-owned businesses.

As of now, Williams’ music can be downloaded for at the free mixtape site DatPiff.com…go get it today!
What the Center Does

Boasting the only undergraduate program in fundraising and philanthropy in the HBCU network, the Center strives to attain several broad goals through a combination of expert leadership and enthusiastic young students.

Training and education are among these goals; the Center aims to create a new kind of fundraising and philanthropy professional, one which is aware of today’s changing philanthropic climate and which has the skills to create real and lasting change.

The Center also strives to support this new crop of fundraisers in their academic and personal growth, learning and development potential.

As the philanthropic field grows and diversifies, the Center will place a high priority on identifying, utilizing and understanding these rapid changes.

Open communication and awareness are also high priorities. These elements are essential to keeping on top of our diversifying philanthropic climate. The Center encourages open discussions and idea-sharing in order to give every student a voice and find the freshest, most groundbreaking ideas possible.

Ultimately, the Center hopes to create an entire culture of fundraising and philanthropy, built on simple yet profound guiding principles of accepting change, thriving on that change and realizing the potential for increased success through an open exchange of ideas.

Fundraising and Philanthropy for the Future

The Center is truly one of a kind at the moment. It is the hope of those involved that it will not stay that way for long, and that this Center’s existence and results will spark similar programs across the HBCU network. Presently, being the only program of its kind, the Center presents a unique and invaluable opportunity for students interested in a fundraising or philanthropic career choice.

While new schools are routinely being incorporated into the HBCU family, there are many which have stood for well over one-hundred years. Here, we’ll take a quick look at the five oldest HBCUs in the United States.

Proudly standing as the oldest HBCU in the United States, Cheyney was founded in 1837. In the beginning, the school was known as the Institute for Colored Youth. Funding for Cheyney was provided by Richard Humphreys. Humphreys, a Quaker philanthropist, was born in the West Indies. After his arrival in Philadelphia in 1764, he was dismayed to see the struggles of African Americans as they lost out on jobs due to a lack of education. Humphreys dedicated one-tenth of his estate to the establishment of a school which would address this urgent need.

Lincoln University of Pennsylvania

Founded in 1854, LUP is located in southern Chester County. Although the school was founded as a private institution, it has been a public college since 1974. Lincoln has the distinction of being the very first degree-granting HBCU in the United States, a groundbreaking difference at the time and a huge leap forward for African American education.

Wilberforce University

Located in Wilberforce, Ohio, WU was founded in 1856. Among its many distinctions, Wilberforce was the first HBCU to be owned and run by African Americans. The college was founded by members of the local Methodist Episcopal Church.

Harris-Stowe State University

Founded in 1857, Harris-Stowe is located in St. Louis, Missouri. The college has the distinction of being the first public institute of teacher education west of the Mississippi River. The original school went through several phases and eventually took the name of the Harris Teachers’ College. This name honored William Torrey Harris, a United States Education Commissioner and Superintendent of the St. Louis Public School District. In 1920 the school became a four-year institution accredited to grand Baccalaureate degrees.

Harris-Stowe continued to evolve. A second college, the Stowe Teachers’ College, began granting four-year Bachelor’s degrees in 1924 after having itself undergone several phases and name changes. In 1954, these two colleges were merged in the area’s first step toward integration. In 1979, the school took on its current name.

In that year, a missionary named Lucinda Humphrey was sent to the area with the sole purpose of opening a quality school for freedmen and runaway slaves. After being moved and burned to the ground by race-riot fires, the small school struggled under epidemics and poor finances for years. It was then known as the Lincoln Chapel. A large 1870 donation by Pennsylvania doctor and abolitionist Francis J. LeMoyne offered the institution new hope

Owen College was founded in 1947 by the Tennessee Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention as a teachers’ college. In 1968, the two schools were merged. Their shared dedication and focuses on liberal arts in a Christian setting transformed into the institution as we know it today.

Torrance, CA. April 8, 2013 – After two days of intense competition among 250 students representing 48 competing teams, Morgan State University claimed its second National Championship title in a row at the 24th Annual Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC), an annual academic event featuring the best and brightest students from the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Enduring a year-long program of study and preparation, the Morgan State University team emerged victorious at the National Championship Tournament held on the Los Angeles-area campus of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., and took home $50,000 in grants for their school.

Surviving 10 games against tough competition, Morgan State University clinched the National Championship over second-place finisher Florida A&M University after answering the following question correctly:

In 1975 the Himalayan kingdom of Sikkim joined what very large neighbor to its south? Correct Answer: India

The Morgan State University team included Craig Cornish (Captain), senior, History Major; Kyle De Jan, senior, History Major; Micheal Osikomaiya, junior, English Major; and James Hayes-Barber, sophomore, Electrical Engineering Major.

The fast-paced, suspenseful competition tested the students’ abilities to quickly and accurately answer questions on a broad range of topics including world history, science, literature, religion, art, social sciences, popular culture and African-American history and culture. The top two teams from each of the eight competing divisions advanced to the “Sweet 16,” a single-elimination playoff. The final two teams then battled it out for the national title in a best 2-out-of-3 finals.

While Morgan State University secured the top prize of $50,000 in university grants, all 48 schools were awarded grants. Florida A&M University won $25,000, while the remaining “Final 4″ teams – Oakwood University and West Virginia State University – each received $15,000. The other top eight – Alabama State University, Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and North Carolina A&T University – were awarded $9,500 in grants. In total, Honda provided more than $300,000 in grants to participating schools.

Since 1989, HCASC has brought together the nation’s best and brightest academic competitors from America’s top HBCUs. Throughout its history, HCASC has been the only annual academic competition between the nation’s HBCUs, touching more than 100,000 students and awarding more than $7 million dollars in grants.

The Honda Campus All-Star Challenge provides a one-of-a-kind outlet for students to flex their knowledge and intellect in an intense but friendly rivalry. Beyond the competition, the Challenge gives HBCU students an opportunity to connect with like-minded students, build friendships and establish networks that last beyond HCASC. Honda is honored to celebrate the academic excellence of HBCU students through this empowering event.”

Choosing an accredited school is one of the most important academic choices a student can make in today’s competitive job market. Not only do graduates of accredited colleges consistently find better employment, but they enjoy an education which has been certified as the best of the best. Obtaining a degree from a non-accredited school is essentially career sabotage. Many employers refuse to even acknowledge a non-accredited degree, and the vast majority will pass up a candidate possessing a non-accredited degree in favor of an accredited, certified and recognized education.

Do yourself a favor and start your career on the right foot by choosing an accredited college. There are many business HBCUs which have been certified by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the most respected accreditation organization of its kind.

Young people today are shopping, banking, socializing and gaming online. They are virtually inseparable from their electronic devices. It shouldn’t be surprising that they are looking to the Internet for their college education as well.

Not only that, but today’s students start participating in e-learning from as early as Kindergarten. Many high schools offer online courses for credit recovery, to broaden their course offering or accommodate student’s schedules. According to Jim Hundrieser of Noel-Levitz, high schools are turning out college bound seniors with high expectation for online learning opportunities as part of their higher education.

Popularity of online education

Online enrollment is far outpacing traditional enrollment because of the affordability, convenience and flexibility it offers. According to Forbes, the growth rate of online enrollment is 21%. Pew Research has found that 1 in 4 college students is taking at least one online course.

While there are a growing number of online colleges, even traditional institutions are trending the same way be offering at least some online or blended courses. The rapid growth of the Internet along with the declining economy have created the perfect storm for higher education institutions.

In his article, “Report Discusses Top Trends in Student Enrollment,” Jamaal Abdul-Alim cites a Lawlor Group study as concluding that, “All types of online and hybrid courses are thriving as the marketplace seeks cost-effective access and convenient delivery.” While a college education is still considered critical to one’s success in the down economy, today’s students are looking for economical ways to reach that goal and online education is a standout option.

College and universities are offering a variety of online components. Some courses are 100% online while others are a hybrid, a blend of online and traditional face-to-face interactions.

Typical students participate online by:

Viewing lectures online, either live or on-demand

Submitting their assignments online

Reading digital text books, articles or other materials

Completing forum based assignments

Delivering projects on online platforms

Viewing on demand or face-to-face lectures

Accessing podcasts

Utilizing student portals

The availability of online learning options are important factor for most students today in selecting a college or university.

Advantages of online education

In its early years, online education was frowned upon by traditional college and universities, as well as employers. The common perception was that online courses did not provide the same value or rigor as traditional course. This stigma is quickly fading into the past as graduates of online education have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with graduates of traditional institutions.

There are a number of distinct advantages to an online education for students including:

Flexibility—much of online course content is on demand and can be accessed on any schedule. This has made higher education accessible to non-traditional students such as parents, those with full-time employment, or older adults.

Affordablity—online courses and degrees offer a substantial financial savings over traditional higher education. Not only is this savings found in the tuition, but because students can live at home or anywhere they need to often reducing room and board costs considerably.

Options—with online education the choices are endless. There are online courses and degree programs for every career interest: business, criminal justice, education, nursing, and information technology. Students can choose from Ivy League schools, Christian online college, business administration schools and more.

Undoubtedly the internet revolution of higher education has been hugely beneficial for students looking for affordable and quality higher educations. Today’s smart, savvy students are eagerly taking advantage of all online education has to offer.

Whether you are earning your nursing degree at an on-campus program or you are enrolled in one of the many online master of science in nursing programs, classroom learning is only part of your educational experience. In order to complete your degree program, you’ll have to successfully complete a practicum, or master of science in nursing , within a hospital or other health care environment.

Because MSN candidates generally already hold a BSN in nursing and the registered-nurse designation, the MSN practicum is less about developing hands-on patient-care skills, and more about developing skills in management, supervision and training. Although the specifics of every program vary, there are some things you can expect no matter where you practice.

Finding a Location

The first step to a successful practicum experience is finding a place that will accept you as a student and that can provide qualified leaders and advisors to guide you throughout the experience. In some cases, your school will assign you to a local health care facility with which they already have a relationship. The facility already knows the requirements of the program, and will provide a training experience that is appropriate and rigorous.

When you’re attending an online program, however, you might be expected to locate a facility to complete your requirements on your own. In most cases, the program will specify the facility requirements, and then help you complete the necessary paperwork in order to work within that facility. Keep in mind, though, that some hospitals have established relationships with particular schools, and may not be willing to accept a student from outside of that program.

Preparing for the Practicum

As you prepare for your practicum, it’s important to review your program’s requirements to ensure you’re ready for the experience. Some programs, for example, require students to develop a formal proposal for the practicum, outlining what they hope to accomplish while working in the field. Others require that students have met all of the prerequisites for the practicum experience.

Beyond the academic aspects, though, there are significant paperwork responsibilities you must complete before you start work. Your school and the practicum site will outline these requirements, which include up-to-date vaccinations; in most cases, you’ll have to prove immunity to measles, mumps and rubella, hepatitis, chickenpox and meningitis, as well as test negative for tuberculosis and show proof of up-to-date tetanus shots. Some sites also require a complete health assessment as well as a drug test.

Before you can begin working with patients, you’ll most likely have to pass a criminal background check in addition to passing the health screenings. You’ll also need to have adequate insurance coverage, protecting you against liability in the unlikely event something goes wrong. Some facilities might also require that you undergo their HIPPAA training, and provide proof of CPR certification.

What to Expect

Because every practicum experience is different, it’s impossible to predict exactly how your experience will play out. In most cases, though, you can expect to work with an experienced manager who will supervise your interactions with other nurses and patients. For those studying to be nurse managers, your assignments will give you the chance to apply your knowledge of leadership and management, while those studying to become nurse educators will use the theories of curriculum design and development, education, training and evaluation in real-life situations.

Most practicum experiences require about 100 hours of hands-on experience, meaning that most students will not work in the facility full time. In most cases, the practicum experience will be a few hours a week, allowing students to meet their other obligations while they learn; however, graduate students will still be expected to adhere to the hospital policies, such as dress code and behavior.

Hands-on experience is a key component of any educational program, especially when it comes to health care and nursing. While the MSN practicum may be shorter — and less clinically intense — than that required for a nursing bachelor’s degree, it is still a valuable and important experience. Knowing what to expect and how to approach the experience will help you get the most out of it and launch your successful nursing leadership career.
