Due to the impeding blizzard, the library will be closing at 5:00 on Monday (or perhaps earlier), please check the website at www.hchlibrary.org for the latest update on closings.

The HCH Library will be closed all day Tuesday, Jan 27th, and will open at noon on Wednesday, Jan 28th as long as the parking lot and sidewalks are cleared!

Stay home and safe and enjoy this New England weather!

Celebrate Diversity @ HCH Library

All Pierson School students are invited to Celebrate Diversity on early dismissal day! The HCH Library and Clinton Youth and Family Services in conjunction with The Anti-Defamation League are hosting an interactive program on Thursday, March 20th from 12:30-3pm. During the program, children will play games and ice breakers, do some role playing and do a Readers' Theater version of the book Julia's Star. A pizza lunch will also be served.

Julia's Star was written by Johanna Justin-Jinich when she was 15 years old and tells the story of a young girl and her friends moving beyond stereotypes and into acceptance of the different religions and cultures of others.

Check out our new spring program brochure! We have many of the same offerings plus a few new ones. Kids in Motion, Baby & Me, Storytime, Music with Margie, Rainbow Music, and Sign Language for Little Ones are all continuing with their regular days and times. We're also pleased to offer a Passport Around the World program on Tuesdays at 4pm. We'll learn about a different country each week by reading stories and doing crafts and activities.

Upcoming Programs

We have so many programs coming up in the next few weeks! This Saturday, Feb. 8th at 1pm local author, Dorothy Ricci, will be here to talk about her new book. Dorothy spends her summers here in Clinton, and newest book, The Secret of the Silent Sea Gull, is set in our very own town! Stop by to meet her and hear her talk about her book and writing process.

We have rescheduled our snowed out Korean New Year to Wednesday the 12th at 4pm. The Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project will be coming back to the library to tell us some Korean folk tales, teach us a traditional New Year's greeting, and let us try on some traditional Korean clothing.

Then during February school break, we are offering two programs. On Wednesday the 19th, we'll be having a Superhero Training. Starting at 3pm and going until 5pm, kids will create their own superhero costumes, learn how to leap over tall buildings and perfect their throwing aim. On Friday the 21st from 1-3pm, we're having a Diary of a Wimpy Kid party. There will be trivia, games, activities, and crafts all related to the series. This program is recommended for children in grades 2-5. Please register for this event at http://www.hchlibrary.org/kids/register_kids.php.

On Wednesday, February 5th at 4pm, the Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project (KSCPP) will be visiting the library to share some Korean folk tales and teach children the practice of Sebae, a traditional new year's greeting. Kids will get to try on some traditional Korean dress, practice Sebae and eat some tasty desserts before leaving.

Take Your Child to the Library Day!

Mark your calendars! Saturday, February1st is the 3rd annual Take Your Child to the Library Day! Over 400 libraries in 40 states are participating this year, and HCH is no exception. In honor of this wonderful celebration, we will have all of our pop-up books on display all day. Feel free to drop by and do some reading. We'll also have a pop-up themed craft to do at our craft table.

Last, and certainly not least, we will have Curious Creatures visiting us! At 3pm, Curious Creatures will be performing an educational, live animal show. They'll bring a variety of mammals, reptiles, and even a few insects. We'll learn about those animals and will even be able to touch them. This show is recommended for children in grades K-6. The Henry Carter Hull Library now has four Roku LT devices available for check

out. These streaming movie players are loaded with Netflix and conveniently hook into your television.

You may stream as many movies and TV shows as you want on your television provided you have a home wi-fi connection.

Happy 2014 from all of us here in the Children's Room! As always, we have so many fun things planned for this new year. All programs have officially started, and we have some great special celebrations planned.

Join us on Saturday, January 11th from 1pm-3pm to celebrate Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland! We'll be playing games, doing crafts, having a tea party, and watching the classic Disney movie.

And mark your calendars! Saturday, February 1st is Take Your Child to the Library Day! We'll have all of our pop-up books out for everyone to read and even have some pop-up crafts. Then, Curious Creatures will be coming at 3pm to perform a live and educational animal show. There will be some mammals, reptiles, and even insects for everyone to see and touch.

And don't forget that the library is now open on Sundays from noon-4pm. We will have a different craft each week in the Children's Room during that time, so stop on by!

We have two great parties coming up! On Monday, December 23rd from 2pm-3:30pm, we'll be having a hot chocolate party. Come to the library, drink some hot chocolate or tea, have some snacks, make some crafts, and have some fun!

Then, on January 11th from 1pm-3pm, you are invited to an un-birthday party! Celebrate Lewis Carroll's un-birthday by joining us for an Alice in Wonderland party. Best Beginnings Holiday Clothing Collection

Best Beginnings Preschool is holding a clothing drive to benefit the children of Clinton! They will be collecting NEW clothing items like pajamas, slippers, socks, underwear, hats, mittens, and coats. Collection bins are located in the children's room at the Henry Carter Hull Library and at the Red Barn Children's Center. Donations will be picked up on December 18th and will be distributed by Clinton Social Services.

We have done so many fun things this month! We had several special guests, including the Volunteer Fire Department who brought their trucks, and Sparky, pictured below. Thanks to everyone that came to see them!

We also created a library scarecrow, Jack, with the help of our Wee Learners. He sat behind the desk and greeted everyone that came in, and he kept all of those pesky crows away. Jack stayed with us for a few weeks before he had to go shoo crows away in a different location.

We have many fun programs all week long! Stop on by for Baby & Me Tuesdays at 2:30pm and Wednesdays at 9:30am, Storytime on Wednesdays at 11am, Wee Learn at 4:30pm, Super Tots with Mrs. T.Thursdays at 3pm, Rainbow Music with Mrs. V. The Children's Room will be hosting a special guest performer, Judy Potter, as she does her show, "It's Theater Time!" On Friday, October 4th at 1pm, join us for half an hour of fun! Judy will be bringing her guitar along for a sing-along after she tells a great and enthralling story. Before it's time to go home, everyone will have the chance to be a part of the story and act it out along with Judy. It's going to be a blast, and we hope you can come!
