Big Ministry Goals

Ever heard someone state a very ambitious goal that made you raise your eyebrows in suspicion? It's natural to defer to a doubting posture when presented with difficult facts. In a world with many cynics and self-described "realists", it's refreshing to hear a story of people with BIG FAITH. People who are willing to really go beyond the call. Here's a story that aired on "Beyond the Call" last week:

Hi I'm Wayne Pederson, President of HCJB Global with Beyond the Call.

As you can hear the traffic in the background I'm in Bangkok, Thailand. Thailand is a country less than 1% Christian. I remember the phone call from the church planter who said, "We have the freedom -- we can get 100 (radio) licenses."

A year later I met Enoch, a godly man who brought believers together with a vision to plant 8,000 churches by the year 2020.

And I met Reyon, a businessman with the resources to help finance those 100 radio stations. He said, "We've been praying for a partner for two years -- what took you so long?"

Today, we've moved three staff persons to Thailand and we've already planted 10 stations -- 90 to go!

Jesus said he came to seek and to save the lost -- we'll do it together with this humble pastor and this passionate businessman who are ready to go Beyond the Call.

"Thank You" in Many Languages

Saying "thank you" can come in many different forms. It may be a card, an email, a voicemail, a smile, a thumbs up, a gift or a simple verbal two-word statement from one person to another. During this time of year, I'm sure you're receiving an escalated amount of "thank you's" as people express their gratitude for your work, ministry, influence in their life. So...how many different languages do you hear your "thank you's"? HCJB Global gets a lot!

God has brought HCJB Global (marking 80 years this month!) together with partner ministries to plant nearly 400 Christian radio stations in more than 100 countries. Translation...a LOT of different languages! As a result, they regularly receive their fair share of "thank you's" that require translation assistance. Here are just a few:

Japanese-speaking listener, Japan: "Many of my friends were lost in the tsunami. When I visited a place here bodies of the victims were laid I was speechless. My heart cried out, 'What a tragedy! Why did this happen? Where is God?' But as I saw the love and compassion of many people from all around the world who came and helped care for the evacuated families, my heart was encouraged. I felt the intimate, genuine love of God and realized He must be at work here!"

Listener in Bangladesh: "Your station is the best of all the radio stations around the world because of your presentation, talking style, friendly attitude and informative, educational programs. We always discuss your programs and introduce them to other people. Now all my colleagues listen to your programs every day!"

Estonian-speaking listener, Central Asia: "I am a great admirer of your broadcasts. I often listen to your radio station and consider your station one of the best I can get here. Also, several friends now listen. Thanks for broadcasting the gospel!"

Hindi-speaking listener, India: "My friends and I have been listening to your programs for the past three years. We learn a lot of good things and get information on many things. We request you to please start a program in Bengali. This would be helpful for many people."

Recognizing Your "Beyond the Call" Moment

Is it easier or harder to go "beyond the call" during the Christmas season?

Listeners of HCJB Global's 1:00 program, "Beyond the Call", will be hearing many inspirational stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. In each feature, the story focuses on an individual who recognizes their "beyond the call" moment. It's exactly the kind of reminder we need during this season as we encourage a spirit of giving.

As you prepare to inspire others to embrace this season of giving, take note of one example I found from HCJB Global. You'll find in this story three specific steps for recognizing your next "beyond the call" moment:

For Oscar Aguirre, a 10-minute transaction on a Quito street meant freshly shined shoes after a Sunday-morning church service. But to this young businessman, the December 2000 encounter meant so much more. Juan Alpapucho, the boy working on Aguirre's shoes, needed more than enough pay to buy a few pieces of bread.

1. Identify the "Where": Oscar didn't go anywhere special. An opportunity to serve came to him right where he was. Where have you sensed God calling you to go "beyond the call" lately?

Work as a shoeshine boy provided little for Alpapucho who hadn't had a decent meal in days. "I invited him for breakfast," Aguirre related. As Alpapucho ate bread and yogurt, the two talked, and the young boy accepted Aguirre's invitation to attend a Spanish-language church that same morning.

2. Find the "What": It was as simple as a breakfast. From there, a conversation over bread and yogurt led to an invitation to attend a church service later that same morning. What could you do in the next week to bless just one person?

At first Aguirre felt shame. Until then he'd done nothing for Ecuador's poor, but decisive action followed. Soon he had the ear of the board members at English Fellowship Church, and from the pulpit he had the ear of the church's international congregation in Ecuador's capital city. Among those who volunteered time, money and other resources was HCJB Global missionary David Tippett.

In February 2001 Tippett, Aguirre and others shared a message from the Bible, then served the first Pan de Vida breakfast to 20 people in the Tippetts' carport. Hence the ministry, Pan de Vida (Bread of Life), was birthed, with help from various ministries: Alliance Academy International, English Fellowship Church, Extreme Response, Hospital Vozandes-Quito, Samaritan's Purse and HCJB Global.

3. Look for "Who": Recognizing the potential for greater reach, Aguirre shared his idea with trusted ministry partners. Who could you ask to help you in this mission?

What began with plates of scrambled eggs with ham, rice, a banana, a piece of bread and glasses of milk and fruit juice has grown, Aguirre recounted at a special event in October to commemorate the ministry's 10th anniversary.
